Dance bar and me.. no way!
Natasha Sahgal I Lokhandwala
His character Yuvraj, the scheming brother in Zee T V's Ghar Ki Laxmi Betiyaan that has made him a household name, is actually quite contrary to Romit Raj. Unlike the sly, manipulative Casanova he plays, Romit neither enjoys spending hours with girls at a dance bar, nor smoking, or drinking.
"I am the yoga, meditation and vipassana type! I have never touched a cigarette or alcohol until today. Dance bar and me.. no way! But I think that is what makes it so challenging. Sometimes playing a role that is contrary to your own persona is quite challenging since you have to convince the audience to believe something you are not. But the best part is that this has given me a chance to experience the dark side of life, without doing any damage to myself!" grins this Lokhandwala resident.
A true Kolkata boy, Romit came to the city after he his success with his Bengali film, Proti Bimb. Surviving in Mumbai was not all rosy for this ambitious lad, but after numerous auditions, he managed to bag a popular HDFC ad. This finally got him noticed, and helped him bag a big role in the popular kids TV serial Shakalaka Boom Boom.
After that he played the lead in the film Hum Dum. Though this film flopped at the box office, his cute face was a hit with a lot of girls and even children. "It is very flattering when groups of girls come up to me, and want to click photographs with me. I love the attention, but then again, who wouldn't?" he adds cheekily.
This year the young actor is most excited about his role in the soon to be released film Yatra, which stars Nana Patekar and Rekha. "It might not be a very big role, but I just feel so privileged to share the screen with such great actors. Working with them has been such a great learning experience. It is something that I am going to carry with me for the rest of my life," he says with his charming smile.
Romit has had his share of working on the big and small screen, but refuses to choose the medium that he prefers. "Destiny has brought me to this point and it will take me wherever I have to work. I am no one to decide what I would prefer to do. I just feel honoured that people have trusted me. I want to work with everyone who will give me a chance, whatever the medium may be," he states.
When he's not working, Romit loves to catch a movie, "That is the best part of living here, even if I come home really late, I can still catch a late night show at a multiplex."
And does he have anyone special to watch these movies with? "I am so busy that I have no time to even look for anyone! The only way it can happen is if she finds me and comes to me!" he laughs.
