Kunti had suggested Draupadi to talk to all Pandavas before marriage and get to know them better. Hence, Draupadi was in discussions with everyone since morning and now it was Sahadev's turn.
"Yes. Rajkumaari. I am Sahdev, Arjuna's brother... I am very intelligent and an expert swordsman." Sahadev added unnecessarily, determined to impress Rajkumari.
"Rajkumaar, as you know, we will be married. I would like to know you better. Could you please tell me about yourself ?"
"Well.. I am Sahadev.. younger brother of Bhrata Yudhisthir, Bheema and Arjuna." Sahadev stopped. He was a man of few words and wrapped up his biography concisely.
"Anything else you wish to add ? Rajkumar Nakul also replied same."
"We both think alike and are equally skilled and equally brave." Draupadi winced slightly. Nakul had already tested her patience and she was in no mood for another Nakul.
"Please tell me little about yourself.. favorite colour, food."
"Oh Bhrata Yudhisthir prefers white." Sahadev's personal choices revolved around his elder brothers, his idols.
"No Rajkumar. I want to know about you. What food you prefer ?"
"Oh.. Bhrata Bheema prefers laddoos most. We always make fun of him and have a hearty laugh."
"So I noticed." Draupadi said dryly.
Talented Draupadi was skilled in singing, dancing, playing various instruments. At Panchaal, she was always surrounded by her art teachers, vedanta scholars with whom she thoroughly enjoyed erudite, witty, sophisticated discussions.
Now she was forced to listen to the crude jokes on eating and burping.. She even had to pretend to enjoy them. Draupadi was depressed.
"By the way, Pitashri would like to know some major achievements of yours so Raajkavi(royal bard) can prepare eulogy in your honour. He inquired with Gurudev Dron but he does not remember you being his student."
"Gurudev is getting old..Well..My achievements.. Let me see. Bhrata Bheema killed mighty Hidimb and ofcourse bhrata Arjun defeated your father in battle."
"I know that Rajkumaar. Pitashri wants to know YOUR feats. I asked maata Kunti about the same but she suddenly remembered to have taken a vow to observe silence and could not talk. She gestured me to check with you directly."
"Well. Err.. I am highly respected and mighty enemies are scared of me."
"Due to your swordmanship ?" Draupadi's eyes lit up.
"Ofcourse not." Sahadev was annoyed at such a strange suggestion from Draupadi. "They know that I have powerful and skilled Yudhisthr, Bheema and Arjun as my brothers."
Sahadev noticed that Draupadi's face fell and hastily added.
"Like Lord Mahadeva, I also have an invincible Trident.. My 3 brothers."
Draupadi was not impressed. She quietly wiped her moistened eyes and put on a brave smile.
Intelligent Sahadev could see that Draupadi was fast losing interest in him.
"I also get Poorvabhaas, a sign, portent of things to happen." Sahadev hastily added and to his delight it did catch her fancy.
"Please tell me more."
"I get these things from childhood and my brothers rely heavily on my advice." Sahadev too eager to show his importance.
"Take the case of Swayamvar.I was uneasy since morning. I even persuaded bhrata Arjuna to leave but then we were held off by Vaasudev."
"Oh.. So it was you who convinced Raajkumaar Arjuna not to participate in swayamvara." Draupadi asked coldly.
"Yes. I was getting ugly signs. I heard wailing of wolves and felt nauseated and said to myself. this swayamvara and the girl are cursed. I advised Arjuna to avoid you like a leper." Sahadev was slowly getting twitchy Poorvabhas about himself but discounted it as his own feeling of anxiety to please Rajkumaari.
"Oh. You are so charming. Please continue Rajkumaar." Draupadi added sweetly. Sahadev was accustomed to simple, straight talks with Kunti and completely failed to notice Draupadi's sarcasm and her clenched fists and gritted teeth.
Thus encouraged, he happily continued his journey into abyss.
"Rajkumaari.. I again noticed horrifying signs, when bhrata Arjuna was on his way to introduce you to maata Kunti,
The surrounding luscious grassy field suddenly turned into barren land, the clear lake water turned into turbulent red, the sun disappeared behind dark ominous clouds which shaped into skull, a portent of untold miseries, destruction.
A strong voice, more powerful than your Pitashri screamed into my ears, the life is about to turn into living hell for all of you. Avoid this marriage at any cost, avoid this crazy, terrible girl..."
Sahadev came around after couple of hours. He had a huge, pulsating bump on head and only a hazy recollection of meeting Draupadi.
What transpired in that room had always remained a mystery even for Vyaasa.
