Chapter 2 *The Realization*

"Shhh...Zor se mat bolo. Dheere bolo..sabko lagta hain main ihaan Nimmi ko uska CD lautane aayi huun ander chalo" said Arohi but as Arjun stood stunned Arohi pushed Arjun inside the room shutting the door behind her!

"Ab batao hua kya hai?"

Arjun was too stunned to react. He stood quietly while Arohi stared at him waiting for an answer.

"Arre aise kya khare ho bolo Arjun kya hua hai tumhe?" asked Arohi raising her voice a bit and shaking Arjun by the shoulder.

Arjun gathered himself together and said, "Mujhe kya hoga? Main bilkul thik huun. Tum batao tum ihaan iss waqt kya kar rahi ho?? Raat ke 10.30 baj rahe hain Arohi."

"Oho ho kuch nahi hua hai. Aur sawal ke badle mujhe hi sawal kar rahe ho! Baat to aise kar rahe ho jaise main pehle kabhi itne raat ko tumse milne nahi aayi.. abhi do din pehle hi hum raat ke 11 baje tak padh rahe the tumhare room me! Aur waise bhi main koi London se thodi hi na aayi huun. Bas pados me hi to rehti huun."

"Arohi par woh aur baat hai exam ke waqt to.."

"koi aur baat nahi hai.. exam ke waqt main pareshan rehti huun aj tum ho.. to kya main tumse milne nahi aati.. ab yeh sab chhodo aur jaldi batao ke hua kya hai? Isse pehle ke daadi mujhe bulane aa jaye."

"Arohi tum aise jhoot bolke kyun aayi ho milne? yaar tum..."

"arre bas lecture band karo aur jaldi bolo hua kya? Kya bolna tha tumhe subah? Bola kyun nahi aur kis baat ke liye derr ho gayi."

"Arohi kuch nahi. Please tum jao ihaanse. Mera bas mood thik nahi hai.."

"Tu jata hai kya jab main bolti huun tujhe jaane ke liye? Dekh ab mujhe na woh kya kehta hai tu mujhe ziddi Billi banne par majbur mat kar."

"Arohi, please yaar main..."

"Tu bolega ke main chikke aunty ko upar bulayun?"

"Arohi tum samajh kyun nahi.."

"AUNTY!" shouted Arohi, "A..U..N..T..." Arjun held her from her back putting his palm over her mouth to stop her from shouting.

"Chup hoja..Tu na kabhi nahi sudhregi.. har baat pe itna zid karna zaruri hai kya?"

"m..u..j..e...chh..." mumbled Arohi through her covered mouth.

Arjun understood Arohi was struggling to speak. He immediately left her, realizing that they were too close. Arjun and Arohi were such good friends that being in close proximity with each other was a common phenomenon and it never bothered either of them but today Arjun felt how close he and Arohi stood to each other. It occurred to him for the first time and all of a sudden that she was not just his friend, not just his best buddy but also a girl who was someone else's betrothed. This thought left Arjun all the more dejected and pained though he tried desperately to keep his expressions normal.

Arohi gasped and said "ok to phir batao kya baat hai?"

"Woh.. woh main.. actually.." Arjun started thinking of a reason.

"kya yaar tu bhi? Itna vow to woh apne college ki woh cheer leaders bhi nahi khati! Bol na. I promise main sab thik kar dungi."

Hearing Arohi say that she would set things right Arjun could not help but smile. This was Arohi's patent dialogue. Whenever there was any problem in either Arjun or her life ,she would just say that she would set things right and Arjun would smile and believe that all will be well because Arohi said so. Together with Arohi he could set everything that ever went hay-wire back to normal and he had done that time and again. Whenever either of them were in trouble together they had worked out a solution. But today with the problem beingArohi going away from him and with little hope left of their being together to set things right Arjun wondered how would he deal with troubles hereafter.

"Kya Arjun aaj hua kya hai tumhe? Main phirse kab se bol rahi huun aur tum chup karke baithe hue ho. Bolo na kya hua??"

"woh woh mera exam Arohi.. exam achha nahi hua.. main thikse likh nahi paya.. matlab mera kareeb 10-15 marks chhut gaya.. pata nahi kaise results.."

"Kya kya kya?? TOPPER Arjun ji ka paper complete nahi hua iss liye woh itni NAUTANKI kar rahe hain? Tujhe pata bhi hai mere kitne marks chhut gaye?? Aur tu woh chhod Arjun, tujhe pata hai tere chinta me maine Khana bhi nahi khaya. Pagalo ki tarah ghar pe jhoot bolke tujhse milne aa gayi aur tu hai ki... aur yeh sab chhod tujhe pata hai main kitna darr gayi thi? laga jaise tujhe bohot taklif ho rahi hai aur tu dukhi hai. Aur tujhe pata haina main tujhe dukhi nahi dekh sakti.. Pagal tu bhi na .. jaan nikal di meri.." said Arohi hitting Arjun tenderly on his shoulder.

Arjun kept looking at Arohi while she spoke.

" Ab 1 paper me 10 marks chhut gaye to kya baki papers me to tu top karega na! Ab yeh sab bhooljao aur jaldi bolo ke subah tum mujhse kya kehne wale the? Jo thoda complicated tha aur tum bina bataye chale aaye?"

"Kuch nahi Arohi! woh to bas aiseyi.. main woh.. woh tumhare saath career plans discuss karna chahta tha.. par ab to.."

"Ab to kya? Arre bas meri shadi ho rahi hai. Main padhayi nahi chhod rahi huun! Aur tum bhi na. Aj hi to exam khatam huye aur aj hi! Baad me karenge na discuss! aur Tu yeh mat sochna ke Shadi ho jayegi to main padhayi hi chhod dungi haan!" said Arohi happily.

Arohi's words, expressions ,her voice made Arjun realize that Arohi was very happy as far as her wedding was concerned and that she considered him (Arjun) nothing but a friend. He knew now for sure that Arohi was happy, happy about her wedding, happy even when she knew her marriage would bring about her distancing with Arjun. He did not know how to deal with this sudden Realization though as the Realization left him in terrible pain and yet he tried hard to control his emotions only for the sake of the girl sitting in front of him.

"Arohi woh mujhe na abhi kuch kaam karna hai. Main tumse kal milun?" Arjun rose from the sofa

"Hmmm.." said Arohi rising from the sofa as well.

But as Arjun started walking towards the door, Arohi held him by the arm.

"Arjun! Aj tak maine tumse kabhi kuch nahi chhupaya hai. Tum yeh jaante hona! To mujhe bhi pura yakeen hai ke tum bhi mujhse kabhi kuch nahi chhupayoge!"

Arjun turned fully to face Arohi, he held her face in his hands, forced a smile and said, "tujhse zyada kareeb mujhse aur koi hai kya? To tujhse main kabhi kuch kaise chhupa sakta huun? Jao ghar jao,bohot raat ho gayi hai. Warna daadi aa jayegi!"

Arohi smiled back and together they moved towards the door.

As soon as Arjun shut the door behind Arohi he sat down on the floor with his back against the door, crying like a baby again after years but ironically for the same reason.
