ADRIFT: Epilogue
The commotion at the door was proof enough that somebody important had arrived. It wasn't unexpected though, in a Bollywood celebrity party such as this one, for flashlights and footsteps to randomly start moving around in all directions every now and then. But for once, the air seemed more buzzed than usual. Bittuji turned towards the door, and he wasn't surprised. It was RK and Madhu, making a grand public entrance after a long hiatus. This was the launch party of their latest movie together, and Bittuji was in charge. He smiled, this movie was the funnest projects he had ever worked on. It took a long time to get started, because even though RK loved the story, he didn't want to act any more and just produce it. Madhu tried to convince him to go back to acting because it was his true passion, but he only agreed when Madhu agreed to act in the movies again. RK insisted that Madhu was talented and it was his fault that she had quit. Madhu insisted that the last movie she did had cost her too much and she did not want to act again. For days they bickered like only his Chief and his biwi could, and eventually they compromised. Then they bickered about getting plastic surgery, which also ended in a compromise as they both went through it on the same day.
Then came the media storm, who were stunned by the twin news of Madhu being alive as well as RK-Madhu acting together again after all this while. They had spent weeks hiding from the media who were dying to know the story, and Bittuji smiled remembering all the pranks and disguises Madhu and RK had resorted to, to steal some privacy for themselves. The best moment however was when, on the last day of their shooting, they had all discovered Madhu was two months pregnant. Chief was over the moon, and once that news eventually leaked out, they had to spend no effort on promoting the movie at all over the last three months as the editing etc was being completed. This movie was a superhit even before release, Bittu knew. And so did the star couple, who were now entering the party. Madhu, now showing a small five month belly, was glowing on RK's protective arm, who himself looked happier than Bittuji ever remembered him seeing. Bittuji's eyes turned wet as he prayed God to preserve this joy and keep them all blessed. RK and Madhu were totally lost without each other, and he had seen them both very closely when they were each lost in their darkness, surviving from one moment to the next, floating aimlessly adrift. That was all wrong. Thankfully they had both emerged through the darkness and found each other again.
The only place that Rishabh and Madhubala could ever be and should ever be was with each other, hand in hand, just like right now, Bittuji thought.
RK seemed to read Bittuji's thoughts and agree, as he smiled, then bent slightly to his right and kissed his biwi.
