English Vinglish vs Dedh Ishqiya: Box Office Comparison

Ever since Dedh Ishqiya released in theatres, we have received a lot of requests from readers for a comparison between Madhuri Dixit's latest release and Sridevi's English Vinglish which released in 2012 - both films received critical acclaim, but the latter was way more successful at the box office.

English Vinglish was more commercial and clashed with a small film like Vivek Oberoi's Kismet Love Paisa Dilli. Dedh Ishqiya on the other hand was a sequel to a fairly successful Ishqiya, but released with a youth-centric multiplex film like Yaariyan - which was promoted very well.

However, the fact that English Vinglish held up much better on Monday with a drop of less than 10% from Friday, helped the film go on to be a HIT' at the box office. Dedh Ishqiya took a slow start, but couldn't sustain well enough on Monday (drop was 35% from Friday). Also, English Vinglish almost doubled its collections after its first week.

In the overseas markets, Dedh Ishqiya has collected around 5-6 crore, while English Vinglish was a huge blockbuster with business of $4.7 million (Rs 24.5 crore).

• Release: English Vinglish - 700 screens, Dedh Ishqiya - 1200 to 1250 screens
• India distributors share: English Vinglish- 18.4 crore, Dedh Ishqiya - 13.2 (could touch 14)
• Runtime: English Vinglish - 135 minutes, Dedh Ishqiya - 152 minutes.
• Verdict: English Vinglish - Hit, Dedh Ishqiya - Flop
• English Vinglish: More commercial and feel-good factor, released with a smaller film, critical acclaim, medium-budget
• Dedh Ishqiya: Released with Yaariyaan which affected multiplex business, was critically acclaimed but limited commercial appeal, costs were high considering the star-cast.
