I don't mind Masala films. I actually kind of respect them in a weird way - they provide needed escapism for lots of people who really need it. What really really bothers me about the Indian film industry is the failure of people in a position to promote great Indian films from doing so. For example, it doesn't bother me that the common Indian man doesn't recognize how "borrowed" Barfi was. It bothers me tremendously that the people choosing India's official Academy Award entry are either so ignorant of world cinema or too arrogant to care. Don't even want to get started on the lunchbox. There was an NPR program here in US I was listening to where they were basically just trying to come up with plausible reasons the Lunchbox was not India's selection and the best they could come up with was "internal politics". That is embarrassing!
