Chapter Eight

"Sugni !! Suuugggnniii"
Hukum and Katari came to the mansion looking for their niece. They had finally reached home after spreeing for weeks in the next village. On
arriving home, their wives, Laxmi and Nagania were really pissed at them. They had absconded with Gulabiya's money for the household expenses and had not been heard from in weeks. Now that the money had ran out, they were back for more. They could hardly believe their luck when they heard that Thakur Vikram Singh had done Sugni's sardakai. They always knew she would rake in a rich thakur. They forgot all about Gulabiya being in the hospital and rushed off to the mansion to meet Sugni and hopefully get some gifts as Nagania refused to give them any of the sardakai money.

"What is all this shouting about?" Suman came outside to see who was calling Sugni so loudly. "Ramu? Who is there?"
"Good morning thakurain ji. It's just us, Sugni's uncles. We came here to see Sugni as we couldn't make it for the ceremony," they both had silly
grins on their faces.
Suman looked at them, she could smell the stale stench of alcohol on them. She wondered to herself how they could possibly be Sugni's uncles when they looked so untidy with their uncombed hair, slippers in their hands and their clothes had dirt streaks on them'..wait wait wait..their slippers in their hands? Now where have I seen that before? Hmmm...Oh my god!! That is a bedia custom!! So why were they holding their slippers?
"Why are your slippers in your hands?" she asked them, almost afraid to hear the answer.
"Why thakurain ji, it is the custom for us bednas to hold our slippers in our hands'" Hukum answered her and looked to Katari.

"You..are bednas? Sugni's uncles are bednas?" she asked incredulously.

"Uh yes thkurainji. We are bednas. Is something wrong?"

"No no.. . Sorry. I just wanted to make sure that you really are her uncles. She has never mentioned you before. Come in and have a seat," she told them. She had known that something was very fishy.

"Have a seat and let me get you a cold drink," she told them but when she turned around, Hukum and Katari were standing like statues in the
courtyard.
"Hello!! I said to come on in and have a seat!"

"Co'come in thakurainji? As in where you are right now? INSIDE the mansion?" Hukum asked.
"Yes! That IS what I said. And please don't hold your slippers in your hands. There are so many germs on them."

Hukum and Katari both rushed in at once and sat down on the floor while Suman went to get the drinks.

Suman got glasses from the cupboard and filled it up with ice cubes and some lime juice from the refridgerator. She was puzzled at this new
development. Maybe those men are lying and are actually robbers. And I let them in!! Oh my god!
"Ramu!! Ramu! Where are you?" she shouted.
Kishan, a part time worker, came running into the kitchen, "What is it thakurain ji?"

"Where is Ramu?"

"He had an emergency at home and left late last night ma'am. I am holding on for him. Is there anything I can do for you?"

"Oh I didn't know...sorry...Do you see those men out in the living room?" she asked him and Kishan went to have a peek at them.

"You mean Hukum and Katari?"

"You know them?" she asked.

"Well yes, they are Gulabiya ji's brothers."

"Oh,.. but they said they were Sugni's uncles and that they are bednas!"

"Yes ma'am. They are Sugni's uncles. Gulabiya is her mother and they are bednas."

"But Sugni is Vikram's wife..."

"Wife? ha!! ha!! ha.ah ha ha ha.. ma'am. Thakurs don't marry bednis. She is his bedni not his wife."

"Let me get this straight. Sugni, the girl who is living here, in the guest house, is Vikram's bedni? Is that what you are saying?"

"Look ma'am I don't know what you were told", Kishan suddenly realised that he was out of his depth here, " so maybe I shouldn't be the one answering your questions. Let me call..."

"No!! you will answer the question."

"Ok ma'am. Sugni is Vikram's bedni. Everyone was really surprised when she finally agreed to do her sardakai. Even more shocking was the fact that Ma Saheb requested that she live here after the ceremony. I mean no bedni has ever lived in a thakur's mansion before..."

"Ma Saheb knew about this? That Sugni is his bedni? And she was the one who wanted Sugni to stay here?"

"Yes ma'am. Everyone knows. But the funny thing was...uh forgive me for saying this..but we were under the impression that it was Thakur Bhushan who was going to do her sardakai. I mean he was even there at the ceremony but then at the last minute, out of no where Vikram thakur shows up and completes the ceremony."

"I see. "

"I don't know what they told you ma'am, but they are bednas. Alcoholics too ma'am. They were always looking for thakurs to buy Sugni but her mother always refused. Forgive me for saying this but you should not give them any money because they would just gamble and drink it all away. In fact I suspect that is why Sugni did sardakai. To get the money to take care of her sick mother and family."

"I see."

"Ma'am, if that is all, may I go now? I have to finish the work outside."

"Yes you may go now...Oh Kishan?" she called him back, "don't tell anyone about this conversation we just had ok?"

Kishan nodded his head and left quickly. For some reason he got the feeling that he had spoken too much.

"Why are you sitting on the floor?" Suman asked as she passed the drinks to Katari and Hukum.
"No no thakurainji, we are used to this only. Don't worry about us. Where is Sugni though? We haven't seen her yet."

"I am afraid that you won't be able to see her today. She and Vikram went to the city for some important work. They won't be back until tomorrow."Suman informed them. "But don't worry, my husband, Bhushan, will be here any minute. I am sure he would like to meet you both...in fact that be him now." she said as they heard the sound of a jeep pulling into the driveway.

A couple minutes later, Bhushan, Jiji and Kuhu came walking in the room where Suman was sitting with the guests.
"Bhabhi, I brought the holy offering for..." Jiji stopped as she saw Suman having juice with two dirty looking men. "Uh bhabhi? Are you okay? Who are these people?"

"Yes Suman , who are these men?" Bhushan asked.

"They are Sugni's uncles, Hukum and Katari. They are here to enquire about their niece since they couldn't make it for the ceremony," she replied.
She looked at the subtle glance that passed between Jiji and Bhushan. She took a sip of her juice to hide her smile as she thought of what she had in store for them.

Sugni held her mother's hands as they waited while the doctor read through her reports. Vikram was standing by the window looking at them. He was relieved to see Gulabiya looking far better than she had the last time he saw her. Sugni was also very happy and it reflected in her face.
"So how are you feeling Gulabiya ji?" the doctor asked her.

"Better than I have in weeks, although why that should be after three days of lying around in a hospital bed is a mystery, for sure,"

"The rest in between the tests probably did you good."

"Doctor, does that mean my mother is better? Did you find out why she was having those pains?" Sugni wanted to know.

"I'm not sure," he said honestly, Gulabiya's symptoms still had him baffled. " So far we 've managed to rule things out. Your heart and lungs are fine. The dentist says there's no sign you've been grinding your teeth, which is something that can also cause chest pain. Your GI series was fine. Of course, the pain you've been experiencing could still be indigestion and linked to something you're eating like a spice or particular food. It just didn't show up as inflammation or anything serious in the tests." the doctor explained to Gulabiya.

"So what's next?" Vikram asked.

"Well there's got to be a pattern and we will have to play medical detectives to track it down. So the moment you have chest pain, I want you to drop everything and come and see me. It doesn't matter if it's day or night. But we will figure this out. Now I am releasing you. Please stop all the previous medicines you were taking and have only these that I am prescribing ok?"

After picking up the prescription, Vikram and Sugni dropped Gulabiya home. Laxmi and Nagania were happy to see her out of the hospital.
"How are you feeling now?" Laxmi asked her.
"Oh much better. What about you Laxmi? How is the baby?"
"I am alright for now. I just can't wait for him to be born. The back aches are becoming unbearable now."
"Oh fo Laxmi. Didi I keep telling her that it's normal and she needs to rest more. But she keeps doing chores all day long," Nagania complained
to Gulabiya.
Gulabiya felt so happy to be back home and listen to Nagania and Laxmi bickering. "Nagania, leave her be. A little exercise is also good
for her. As long as she doesn't over do it."
Vikram listened to them talk about Laxmi's pregnancy and he noticed that Gulabiya looked more relaxed. Even Sugni joined in the
discussion about the baby's gender and name. Sugni looked very happy and he couldn't help smiling. They seemed to be very close to each other.
Suddenly Nagania said, "Didi, I forgot to tell you that those two good-for-nothing brothers of yours had come back."
"They did? "
"Yes. But when they heard about Sugni's sardakai, they rushed off to meet her at the mansion."
Vikram and Sugni looked at each other. "How long ago was that?"

"Yesterday." Nagania answered. "I guess they must have gotten some gifts from there because they just came home and left for the village again!"
"What? Doesn't Katari know that you are due soon?"
"He does Didi!! He just kissed my stomach and said that he will be back in time."

"Sugni we better get back home now. Everyone must be waiting hmm." Vikram told her and set down the glass he was drinking from. Sugni got up too and went to hug her aunts and mother.
"Ma, I will come back to look for you soon ok. Don'y worry about anything and take your medicines on time. Nagania mami, please make sure she takes her medicines ok." Sugni said and left with Vikram. She could see that he was tensed.

Vikram did not talk on the way home. He was trying to keep within the speed limits. He kept wondering how no one from home had called him to
mention about Sugni's uncles. He hoped that everything was ok. He felt in his jacket pocket to make sure that the marriage certificate was there.
After Suman had asked about the marriage certificate, he had come up with a story about the wedding being done in haste that he didn't think to wait for the certificate but that he would go and collect it. So he had called up his college friend, Divakar, who was a lawyer in the city and explained all that had happened. He had agreed that he would prepare a marriage certificate for them but they would both need to come and sign it. He then told Suman that he was going to the city to wrap up some loose ends and for Sugni to meet her family before coming back. They had left the next day and spent two days in the city organising the certificate, before meeting Gulabiya in the hospital.
Now he wondered if the truth was out, how was it going to affect the business deal. Would Suman make her parents cancel the deal? He couldn't be sure. He glanced over at Sugni who was looking just as anxious as he felt and he knew that come what may, Sugni was now his wife. He smiled at that thought...Wife huh?
He chuckled to himself as it sunk in that he, of all people, had a wife.

Wow Julie, i absolutely loved chapters 7 and 8. I'm sorry that i didn't read chapter 7 before you posted chapter 8 nevertheless, they were both very well written, i completely enjoyed them. I must say chapter 7 was very funny. I loved the part where Sugni was looking at Vikram while he was sleeping and him asking her if she was checking out the merchandise😃. Indeed it seems as if Sugni is slowly falling for him. Ma Saheb is something else, i can't believe she is afraid to eat the food cooked by Sugni...the way she thinks just amazes me...

Chapter 8

Firstly, thank you so much for posting it promptly😃. I loved it very much. Hukum and Katari are just unbelievable, they always find some way to fulfill their selfish motive. Now that Suman knows the truth, i am really anxious to know what she has up her sleeves. She seems very manipulative. The interesting part was Divakar being Vikram's friend😆...and Vikram seems to be relishing the idea of Sugni being his wife. Their journey has just begun and i am eagerly waiting to see how their love story will unfold.

Julie, you are doing a fantabulous job. Your creativity is very much admirable. I can't wait for the next chapter.

Hi Julie
Just got round to reading chapter 7 & 8
I have to admire the irony he "bought" her and she is "checking out the merchandise" !!!! Love the trust that seems to exist between them even though they barely know each other.
WOW - they are married !!!! I am sure the family will think this is just a marriage of conveniance to pacify Suman and her parents but from his thought "Come what may she is his wife" it would seem for him /them(?) this is for real.
MS is going to go spare when she realises the truth😆 - Looking forward to that scene.
Please can we have the next chapter very soon.

Now before I post the next chapter, I just want to say that I have been having some problems with Sugni's character. A demure and passive Sugni is proving very challenging to write so I have changed the story a bit. Please let me know what you guys think ok.😳

Chapter Nine

"So what do you think of my gift?" Suman asked.

Oh, my gosh. "This is kind, really ----" Sugni began.

"Sugni, you don't have to be embarassed,"Suman soothed. "I know the newlywed phase isn't easy. I've been there and I feel there is always more to learn. I mean, what marriage couldn't be made better?"

"What are you saying?" asked Sugni with trepidation.

"I've signed up to take the course with you!" Suman replied, her excitement about the whole thing evident. "I have to tell Jiji about this!" and she went to find Uma, leaving Sugni to bite her lips.

It was a week since they had come back from the city with the marriage certificate. Suman had told her to safeguard it in her room. But not once did she mention ever meeting her uncles. Sugni and Vikram kept expecting her to say something or ask about Hukum and Katari but she never did. She was in fact, very kind and sweet to Sugni that she began to feel very badly for the lies they were telling to Suman. She felt like the fraud that she was. Vikram had tried to talk to Bhushan but he was always busy with some work or the other and so Vikram and Sugni had decided to let sleeping dogs lie.

Vikram heard the banging of the kitchen-cupboard doors from halfway up the walk to the guesthouse. He found Sugni in the kitchen, scowling as she dished out the vegetables into bowls. "What's wrong" he asked.

"I don't want to talk about it!"

But she needed to, he thought. "Fine, I 'll just call Suman bhabhi and asked what kindness she rendered on you this time," he shrugged and turned to walk back outside but she called him back.

"Suman bhabhi hired an instructor," she told him.

"An instructor on what?" Vikram asked, visions of yoga and beauticians dancing through his head.

"On how to be happily married. The course tells you everything on how to be a good wife in five easy lessons spaced out over a period of two weeks."

Vikram tried to hold in his amusement but the look on her face as she explained the course to him, sent him over the edge. He laughed until tears ran down his cheeks.

"You, in a class on how to be a loving wife?"

"It's not funny! I am not looking forward to this."

"Oh but I am," he teased.

"Don't think that I am going to turn into some mousy thing who lives to do your bidding," Sugni warned.

"A guy can dream can't he?"

"I am serious Malack!" she raged at him, " I am not looking forward to this."

Vikram loved seeing her in a temper. Her cheeks got a rosy colour and there was a sparkle in her brown eyes that he loved to see more than he knew he should. "So don't go through with it," he advised.

"I can't do that either!"

"Why not?"

"Because I would hurt her feelings. Suman bhabhi put alot of thought into that gift."

"So how long is this class going to take?" Vikram didn't want it to take up too much of her time, since she tried to spend as much time with her mother
as possible.

"Well it's five lessons and each class is supposed to be about an hour long."

"You going alone?"

"No. Suman bhabhi and a couple of her friends have signed up."

"Don't they already know how to be loving wives?"

"They hope to learn something. And so do I," she told him firmly, making up her mind.

"To use on me?"

"No way," Sugni told him, "I will learn something that will help me when I really give my heart to someone and get married. Now freshen up for dinner."

That was not the welcome prospect it should have been, Vikram thought as he went into his room to change. Instead of feeling relieved to know that she one day intended to end this farce of a marriage to him as promised, he felt a flash of jealousy. Determinedly he pushed the feeling away.
He'd been too hurt when Reva had died, he wasn't going to open himself up to that kind of pain again. Not for Sugni or anyone else. In fact, he had
to stop thinking of Sugni as his wife or as anything else. It was this living arrangement that was the problem. For the past week, he and Sugni had
been just like newly weds. His mother had told him very clearly that he and Sugni would cook and eat their meals in the guest house by themselves
as she did not want to have to eat anything touched by Sugni! So he and Sugni did just that. In the day, when he went out to work, Suman and Sugni
spent almost the entire day together. When he got home on evenings, he and Sugni would have dinner together then he would wash his own dishes
because he did not want her to feel as though he was taking any advantage of their situation. Then they would spend the rest of the evening talking
about their past. Or rather Sugni would tell him stories about her family and her life. She loved talking and he loved to listen to her. She was very
talkative, bubbly and kind. She was also very determined to make a decent life for herself. She told him repeatedly about her plans for the future
and how she was not going to become a bedni. He really admired that about her. Sure she started off as his bedni but now she was his wife and he
would make sure she had the future she wanted for herself.

////////////////////////////////////////

"Is everyone ready for lesson number one?" the instructor asked.
As ready as I'll ever be, Sugni thought, settling into a chair in the home of one of Suman's friends. Booklets named How to be a loving wife, were
passed out. Sugni stared at the cover, taking in the photo of a bride and groom smiling at each other. If only married life were that simple, she
thought.

"Sugni what did you and your husband have for dinner tonight?"

"Puris and vegetables."
"Describe how the table was set, what your centrepiece was and any special touches you added."

Sugni shrugged. "I didn't set the table. We took what we needed to the table with us and we each did our own dishes afterward."

A collective gasp was uttered by the group. Sugni looked at them. "I am not waiting on him hand and foot."

"Then how do you ever expect him to ever want to wait on you?" the instructor asked her gently.

"I don't!" Sugni said, flushing all the more as she recalled all that he had done for her mother. She had yet to pay him back for his kindness and that
made her feel more guilty.

"One kindness begets another, Sugni," the instructor said sternlt. "Now please, try to keep an open mind..."

Vikram awoke the next morning to the delicious smells of hot coffee and aloo puris. He shifted onto his back and saw Sugni standing in the doorway
with a tray in her hands. "Breakfast in bed?"

"Well I'm in a hurry. I have to go with ma for her checkup and you weren't up yet," Sugni explained. She marched in and Vikram caught a whiff of
her perfume as she bent to help him put a pillow behind his head and settle the tray on his lap.
"Did something happen I'm not aware of?" he asked as he realised that this was the first time she was in his room at the same time as him.

"If you think this payment for staying out half the night, you're wrong," she informed him.

Was that jealousy in her voice? "I was over at the factory. With the opening coming up, I just wanted to make sure that everything is on track."

"Sure you didn't want to avoid seeing me?"

He ran his hands through his hair, "I wasn't sure what kind of mood you'd be in after that class, so I thought I'd make myself scarce."

"As you can see thakur malack, my mood is fine."

That was debatable. She was serving him breakfast in bed but she didn't look too happy about it. "So why are you serving me breakfast in bed?"

"Can't you guess?" Sugni took a small notepad from the pocket of the apron tied around her waist. "It's an assignment."

"Oh." Vikram's spirits took a nosedive. He had hoped that she was doing this out of the goodness of her heart. In retrospect, he could see how foolish
that was. Sugni didn't believe they were married and she wasn't interested in playing house either.

"So?" Sugni was waiting with her pencil over the pad. She was eyeing him expectantly.

"So what?"

"Make some comment about what I've served you."

Vikram looked at the tray and was pleased with what he saw. The puris were a lovely golden colour, the coffee black and steaming. There
was even a flower from the garden in a vase. "Breakfast looks wonderful Sugni." he said softly, meaning it.
"Breakfast...looks...wonderful...Sugni..." she muttered as she wrote in her pad.

"Now what are you doing?" he asked.

"Taking notes to report back to class. I found out that each lesson has a homework assignment and we have to report back to class on the results."

"I see." he said and she left him.

😛 Lovely ...again wonderful job Julie. This relationship between Vickram and Sugni is very very interesting. I love the fact she is not docile, she seems to have a bit of a temper...😆. Last time she was cheking him out...now it seems in this chapter he was the one smitten. I love that.
The lightness of this story is also something I love. Keep it up. Marriage classes...shouldn't it be a couples class??? LOL!!! Great idea ...

Looking forward for more. Next chapter soon please!!!

Wow Julie... a very lovely chapter i understand that you had to take a different approach with respect to Sugni's character but i must say i love this new Sugni... i love the way she interacts with Vikram...so i think this change in the story line is a good one and don't worry you are doing a wonderful job.

I also love the way she treats Vikram as an assignment😆 and i can't help thinking that maybe this new development will surely bring their hearts together and slowly but surely they both will grow to accept and to embrace the fact that they are husband and wife.
