Chapter 15
"Here you are, oiled, gassed, tuned and running like a dream." Bhushan said handing Vickram the keys to his car, a luxury Altma. It was late and driving back instead of taking public transport seemed like the better option.
"You could spend the night"
"No, Sugni needs to get back and we left the Staff alone, they are capable ...but it would be inviting trouble if we were away over night." He said. He knew he would not get away with out seeing his mother, and he was anxious to introduce Sugni to the rest of his family.
His mother and Sugni hit it off as soon as they met. He was pleasantly surprised at how easily and comfortably she seemed to fit in. In no time his mother kicked him out with his brother, as she chatted with Sugni. He spent the time with his brother, getting his car tuned back in order for the long two hour trip back back.
"She is quite a girl!" his brother said .
"Yes she is, she is different!"
"I am happy for you bro." His brother said., genuinely..."It's good to see you happy"
"Thanks." Glancing at the clock he saw it was almost 6:30 and he decided it was time to get going. He was about to go call Sugni, when she came bursting out with a panicked look on her face.
"Sugni?"
"We need to get to the hospital..."
His first though was that something happened to his mother...
"What happened?"
"Suman...she she is having the baby!" Sugni said
"Oh my God!" Bushan said , almost knocking Vickram over to get inside. All plans of making a move went out the window, as his car doubled as an ambulance as he rushed them to the hospital...
Five hours after Vickram pulled into the driveway of his brothers house, with the happy news that he was now the proud uncle of a baby girl. His brother was ecstatic, both mother and daughter were doing fine. Bushan decided to spend the night at the hospital with is wife. Vickram came back with their mother,as she was tired from all the excitement.
It was decided that they would leave in the morning instead, not wanting to leave his mother alone. He bid his mother and Sugni good night as she went with his mother to the other guest room. She wanted to inform Champa of the happenings.
Alone in his room, Vickram was unable to fall asleep. It was almost 1 am and he was wide awake. This had been an eventful day, Sugni finding out about who he really was, after the initial shock wore off, he was relived to see she was back to her normal bubbly self. She treated him the same, which a part of him was worried about.
After the meeting with the lawyer she felt better, Dravid assured them he would come up with a fool proof plan to save the diner within the week. He was confident that he could. So it was just a waitng game now until they herd form him.
Then dinner and a baby!. Watching his brothers happiness, Vickram was happy for him, but a small part of him was a little jealous. He too once had aspirations of a wife and kids. He remembered how devastated he felt when he found out about Reva's abortions. That woman left no stone unturned in destroying any happiness he had. Even now on this happy occasion, she some how managed to creep into his brain.. He closed his eyes trying to shut her out, when there was a soft knock on his door.
"Sugni? Something wrong?"
"No...I saw your light on...and I couldnot sleep...so I thought.." she trailed off.
"Come in." He said making way for her to pass. She came in sitting on the bed.
"So what' s keeping you awake?'" he asked sitting next to her.
"I don't know ...all this excitement...They must be so happy right now...after so may years..wow!" she said. A look of wonder on her face
"Yes they are!"
"Do they have a name yet?" she wondered
"I guess we will find that out tomorrow! Did you speak to Champa?"
"Yeah, she said everything was quite. I told her we would be back tomorrow but I ..." she stopped looking at him
"What?"
"I am sorry I should have asked you first, you will want to stay here na and welcome home the baby. Be part of all the celebrations!"
"No ..we will go back tomorrow, it's not right to leave Champa in charge right now. Jwala will strike when he feel we are at the weakness."
"But. You should be here!" She said
"Sugni, they will understand"
"well you could stay back for a few more days..." She began.
"No we came together; we go back the same way."
"Buhhh"
"Shhh..." he said, placing a finger on her lips."NO arguments...they will understand" She was not happy about it but she stayed quite ...he could tell she was dying to argue her point. It was written all over her face.
He chuckled, "You know you're cute when you think you're right'
"Hmmm?" she mumbled.
Removing his finger from her lips he placed a soft kiss on her lips, the expression on her face was innocently enticing. When turned into more than just a couple of light heart ed kisses, he had no idea. Wrapping his arms around her he kissed her passionately, loosing himself in the moment.
"P...Stop!" She said breaking out of his embrace. She moved away from him...her eyes closed her breathing shallow, her face was red.
"I'm sorry " He said. Oh Lord, he never meant for this to get awkward. He knew she was not ready for anything like this, he was fine with that, with taking this relationship at her pace. Apparently he just spoilt it.
" I- I- should go" She whispered, still looking at the floor.
Taking a deep breath wondering how to fix this, he took her hand.
"Sugni wait,look at me" reluctantly she did
"I'm sorry I never meant to make you uncomfortable, I swear" He said
She shook her head.
"No...I ...I am not quite ready for that ..I mean I am..not" She said, she was flustered.
"I know, Sugni...I know...I understand that...I just got carried away. Listen to me, there is no pressure. And we are going to take this at your pace ok? And all you have to do is say when I step out of line ok? Ok?"
She nodded, looking at him. He let out a sigh of relief. Thinking of a way to get out of this extreamly akward moment He smiled and said...
"Good...well now that that's out of the way will you do something for me?
"Sure, what?" She asked,
"Will you sleep with me?"
The look of comical horror on her face was a sight to see. He laughed as he explained what he ment..."Its after 2 in the morning and we have a long drive back...don't you think we should get some sleep? Or don't you trust me?" He raised his eyebrows questioningly. The blush was back.
A few minutes later she was wrapped up into blanket like a cocoon, which he tucked her in...
"See all safe and sound!" he said. Feeling rediculose she giggled, breaking the tension of the past few minutes.
Lying next to her, he turned off the light.
He felt her move as she shifted to wiggle out of her cocoon she moved until she rested her head on his shoulder, hugging him.
"Vickram?" she whispered
"Hmmm?"
"I love you!"
"I love you to"
"Good night"
"'night "
Within minutes both fell into a contented sleep.
