Baby its hard to believe
that you and I were never meant to be
She stood outside the hotel for minutes unable to believe the turn of events. Her impulsiveness destroyed everything they just started to mend now, after 8 long painful years. She couldn't believe what did. Her words were now hurting her badly.
"No... No... I.. No Abeer..."
She ran back into the hotel to apologise and stood outside that room hoping abeer would understand her, like always. Slowly she took a step ahead and opened the door.
"I will get over you Meher Purohit... I will make sure this happens... I hate you... I hate myself for loving you... You are no one to me now... No one... Do you hear me...?? You are dead to me... Never did I thought that you could say such stuff... Who knows may be always thought that low of me... But i know one thing that you are not the girl i married... And i dont love this meher... We are over..."
She heard his broken voice and found him sitting on the floor, his head hung low, tears rolling down his cheeks. That very moment she realised something. She has broken him today, broken beyond repair. The wounds she caused him today were million times more painful than the ones last time. Yes, she isn't scared to accept it. He hurted her and she hurted him back. But today, she crossed every damn limit and did the unimaginable. She turned around and walked away, every single step of hers taking her miles away from abeer. This time for never returning again. She doesn't deserve him and he will certainly be happy without her, she thought.
"I will get over you..." Abeer whispered again.
A lie is a lie even if you say it a million times... I love her... Only her... I can't get over her, not in this life time. His heart spoke.
"I will forget about you meher... I will move on..."
She is your destiny and my need... We will die without her... Do something... His heart pleaded.
Ignoring his heart and its pleadings, Abeer left the hotel room. In a hope to get over her. To have nothing to do with her.
Meher rang the doorbell and leaned against the wall for supporting her trembling legs. Suman opened the door and felt that someone pulled her heart out of her body. Her daughter was standing at the doorstep. Breathing but lifeless.
"Meher... Where did you go...?? What happened...??"
Meher looked at suman and hugged her tightly. Her life depended on her now, she lost the one who meant the world to her.
"Di... Meher di... Maa..."
Tarun panicked on seeing meher's state. Never has he seen her that vulnerable and emotionally unstable. Not even when she got divorced and got separated from abeer.
"I don't know tunnu... Let me make her sit first..."
Suman made meher sit on one of the sofa chair and sat beside her.
Meher kept crying and staring at her hands. Empty hands.
Tarun kneeled down in front of meher and held her hands. He himself was on the verge on crying.
"Di...I'm sorry... Di... Everything will be alright... We have someone who cares for us... Who loves us... Abeer jiju... Di he is there for us... Jiju will give us that feeling of being safe and protected... Which dad never did..."
Suman nodded her head and wiped the tear which was about to roll down her cheek.
"Not now tarun... Not now..."
Just a mere mention of his name and meher broke into endless tears. She hugged tarun and whispered to him the bitter reality. Abeer will never be there for them now. He has lost his "abeer jiju". This time forever.
"No di... Jiju is there for us... Even if we call him right now, he will come here... To us..."
Tarun smiled and told meher this, with his fondness for abeer visible on his face.
"He... Its over... He probably hates us... All because of me... I killed him today... Mercilessly... With my words... I killed my abeer... He is gone..."
Meher yelled and stood up from the sofa.
"Meher... What happened...??? I am right when I say Abeer is more mature than you... I will call him right now..."
Suman said and picked up the telephone to dial his number. The bell rang but the call went unattended. She dialled again... Twice... Thrice... Everything she got the same response.
"May be he is sleeping..." suman said.
"We are no one to him now... He hates us.. And because of me, you both also lost him... He will never be your abeer again... You lost your son, tarun lost his jiju and I lost my soulmate, my love..."
Meher ran to her room leaving behind tarun and suman, who still couldn't believe what meher said.
"Abeer will call me... First thing in the morning..." said suman.
"I know maa... Jiju will never abandon us..." Tarun consoled his mother.
Meher closed the door and locked it. She sat on the floor, her back resting against the door. Eyes filled with a never ending pool of tears, hands empty, heart broken into zillion pieces, and life... Life not worth living.
"I destroyed everything... With my own hands. All because of me... I hurted everyone who ever loved me and the ones whom I love. Now you hate me and it is making me hate myself. The pain I inflicted upon you is now being inflicted upon me. You loved me and I hated you. Now when you hate me, I realise how much I love you. I need you in my life and sadly i know I can never have you now. I saw it in all your eyes. We are over. We were over 8 years back. But why is it hurting so much this time... Is it because I know you wouldn't be coming back this time..."
Meher sobbed and cried her heart out until the tears refused to roll down her eyes. The wounds screamed to get healed and bandaged, but they didn't know that the only man who could heal them was gone now.
She crawled towards the cardboard box hidden in an almirah and opened it. The box held all the memories of she created with him. Memories. Their cherished memories. The rose he gave her on their first date, the first sorry note of his, valentines day cards, the poems he wrote for her, the songs he composed for her, the gifts he showered her with, their engagement ring, her wedding lehenga, the gift he gave her on their first night, her mangalsutr, their wedding album, their honeymoon tickets and the dreaded alimony cheque.
Her fingers caressed the soft fabric of her wedding lehenga and she smiled faintly. Abeer took her to every single designer showroom in the city to find the best wedding lehenga for their wedding. It took them a week to ultimately find the lehenga, which abeer thought was perfect for her. She was happy that finally the hunt was over and abeer was so proud of his choice of the lehenga.
She tried looking away but something caught her attention. Her eyes were fixed on that something. Her mangalsutr and the round container that had vermilion in it.
"They will always be mine..." She whispered and took them out of the box.
Meher looked at the mangulsutr and remembered the time when she used to wear it around her neck. She didn't use to wear it but now she regretted it. Every time she wore the mnangalsutr, it filled her heart with the sense of belongingness. She belonged to him. And he.. Well he was hers until death do them apart. Exactly like they way he used to say it.
"Come back abeer... You said you are mine... Make me believe it again..."
Her hand was clutching on to the mangalsutr as if it was the only thing that's left with her.
"I'm sorry baby... I'm sorry..." she begged for him to return.
She stood slowly balancing her and stood in front of the mirror. Looking at her image, she wiped her tears and rubbed her face with the back of her hand. Her hair were disheveled, her kajal smudged, her cheeks stained with dried tears. Her hands trembled as she fumbled with the clip of the mangalsutr. She undid the clip and brought her in front of her face. She looked at it longingly and without any second thoughts tied it around her neck. She touched it with her fingers and looked at her image again. She thought it would make her feel better but it made her felt more miserable. She immediately tried opening the box that had her vermilion in it. In hurry, it fell down on the floor, slipping in between from her fingers.
Meher got on her knees and started gathering the scattered vermilion. While trying to put it back in the box, a tear rolled down her eyes.
"Its over..."
She undid the mangalsutr, took it off her neck and whispered as the realisation hit her. There was no use of trying now. The damage was already caused and it couldn't be undone. This was the end of their LOVE. Their journey, their association, his agony, HER LIFE.
"Is this the time to -"
Kuber stopped in the middle of the sentence as he looked at abeer. He never saw his son in that state. He looked devastated. Kuber had seen abeer at his best and his worst. He even saw him when he was the most vulnerable. He never walked up to him and consoled him but that simply doesnt mean he does not cares for him. Abeer is his only son and undoubtedly he is the most priceless possession of his.
"Abeer... What is wrong with you son...?? Abeer look at me..."
Kuber shook abeer to bring him back to reality.
Abeer threw himself in kuber's arms and hugged him. Kuber hugged abeer, giving him a shoulder to cry on and his love protecting him.
"You were right dad..."
Kuber Malhotra felt like a failure when his only son, cried in his arms like a baby, helplessly.
"Abeer... You can tell me anything... I'm there for you..."
"I want to forget about her..." Abeer said closing his eyes and loving the comfort kuber provided him.
