Mahajan's Swayamvar sees him body-building, joining dance classes for the show PS: Promises he won't pull off a Rakhi!

Rahul Mahajan is building his body and grooming himself to participate in the season 2 of NDTV Imagine's Swayamvar. After his stint on Bigg Boss, Rahul is now gearing up to face the cameras and choose a prospective bride from 16 girls. Here's Rahul talking about his quest to find a life partner and his mom's relief on him settling down...

How did the show come to you?
I am a good friend with Sameer Nair and he came up to me and suggested that I do the show. I liked the idea and once I read the format and script, I decided to do it. I think it's an interesting platform for me to not only find a life partner but also to connect to the audience. They all gave me lots of love and support during Bigg Boss.

Is it true you are bulking up for the show?
Yes, I am presently training with Abbas who is Shahid Kapoor's trainer. He's basically getting me into healthy eating and following a basic workout regimen. I don't plan to build a body like Salman, but be physically fit and active. I have also joined dance classes so I have a basic idea of what it's like to dance.

Why the urge to settle down now?
It's a natural transition for me. At my age, you do get lonely and crave for someone's company. So I thought it would be a nice way to meet girls from all over the world and then see whom I get along well with the most. I also believe in destiny and let it take the course of my life.

What are the qualities you are looking for?
I need someone who likes me the way I am. That's the most important thing for me. She should accept me for who I am. Also she should have a kind heart and inner beauty. Everyone has faults, but it's all about growing old and making it work.

Will you backtrack from the commitment like Rakhi did?
I don't know Rakhi personally so I don't want to comment on her situation. As far as I know, I am 100 per cent committed to the show and plan to marry whosoever connects with me the best.

Won't the show take time from campaigning for your sister?
We haven't set a date for the show yet. I fully support Poonam and plan to be with her till the very last day of campaigning. There's no way that I won't have time for her.

How has your family reacted to you participating on the show?
My mom is quite relieved because she wants the best for me. Like every mom, she wants to see me happy and settled. I have got blessings from her and everyone who wishes me well.

You were close to Payal Rohatgi during Bigg Boss. What did she say about you getting married?
All I can say is that whoever wished me well has expressed happiness over my decision. I can't talk about the rest. Both Sambhavna and Monica (Bedi) have said I have made the right decision. They both are my well-wishers.

In Room 670 of a hotel in Delhi, overlooking the hotel compound and a semi-arid grove of bushes yonder, Rahul Mahajan has a spring in his step as he paces his suite, minutes before the official press conference to announce his latest enterprise. He is presented a sheet of paper - a brief that announces Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jaayega, a televised audition of prospective brides through which he will choose his wife. He is reading out the brief aloud when suddenly he stops dead in his tracks. "Arre! Why have you written 'Rahul looking for his 'dreamgirl' yaar! It's too Hema Malini a reference. Please, man, don't do this!" he exclaims. Two ladies from the television channel team come forward to pacify him. "This generation won't even get the reference, Rahul. Please don't worry about the 'dreamgirl' bit being misconstrued. Believe us," says one of them.

Dreamgirl or not, Rahul is clear about one thing: Mukesh Sharma, his astrologer, can't go wrong when choosing the right bevy of appropriate women worthy of betrothal. "He is a PhD in astrology and at 37 years of age, he is just the man for this. He had predicted that by 2010 I would be married. And here I am now. I have full faith in him; he will check all the kundalis of the short-listed applicants," says Mahajan.

Any squeamishness about such a personal milestone being made this public? "Look, the media has, without my permission, documented much of my life. Through dad's death, the drug scandal, the messy divorce, all the bad stuff you guys covered with much glee. I wasn't asking you to cover that then. My re-birth has happened via television thanks to shows like Bigg Boss. Also television penetration is so much better than penetration via internet."

Come again? "As in the reach is so much better. It's 90 million homes! There are better chances of finding the right woman." Okay.

Payal Rohatgi must be devastated, we presume. "I know Payal for the past nine years. She is completely chilled out. Monica (Bedi) too has wished me well on television. I am very ready for this."

How have his friends from SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence), an organisation that he converted to a year ago, responded to his search for a wife on Planet Earth? "Dr Drake of SETI knows, but unfortunately he is too old to come to my wedding. But I am certain he'll watch it on television and have a complete blast."

Giving us a sneak peek into his grooming, Rahul adds that he has been taking horse-riding lessons at the Mahalaxmi Race Course, and also attempting to spruce up his dance via a trainer called Abbas. When we ask him how much he is getting paid for this adventure, he claims. "Look, it's not as cold as that. When working on Chhote Miya I realised that I love kids. I want to have my own family. With dad dying, there has been a void. I want to have a fresh beginning after dad's death. It's like a cycle of life being accomplished; it's not just merely about reproduction. It's about being 34, and me wanting to be a dad. I have been a son. I know what sort of love a son needs. I will give that love to my kids. I am ready"

What sort of girl would he prefer? "She will have to be bold and beautiful; her heart will have to be kind, as soft as a rose. She'll have to be intelligent. It is only after the honeymoon is over that the real marriage begins. It's when reality sets in. That's the true test because marriage is not necessarily love. It is a lot more mature than that."
