Years ago, a director narrated an incident to me. While he was shooting in Vasai fort for a song, he was engrossed in a deep conversation with someone when he noticed a beggar, sitting close by, staring very intensely. The director smiled and asked the beggar, "Tum kya sun rahe ho? Kya samajh aa raha hai?" Pat came the reply, "Samajh ka toh pata nahi saab, par jab tak kaan sunenge nahi toh zabaan bolegi kaise?" It was a simple sentence but it had a great philosophy, which I still carry with me after all these years. While it is applicable to all walks of life, it is especially relevant to entertainment business where it's not unusual to see people becoming caricatures of their former selves within a decade. It is very easy here to build walls of fame and wealth around you and delude yourself into thinking that the approval of your peers, colleagues and contemporaries is enough to keep you on the right track.
Previous decades for actors and technicians in films were perhaps about being single-minded about your work to the point of being uni-dimensional. Since movies was all about peddling larger than life fantasies, connection with the real world was not a priority and yet the only writers, composers and actors who survived the test of time were those that peeked out of their isolated lives, kept up with the changing times and nurtured themselves. With the entire world now having become a global village and with the changing face of storytelling, today it's no longer possible to be that ostrich. The insulated nature of showbiz in our country may not always encourage the 'go out there and live a life to perform it' philosophy but of late there are people from the business who are moving out of their comfort zones. It's commendable when Kangana Ranaut goes to New York and studies screenwriting, Priyanka Chopra takes a break to come out with a music album, Dino Morea decides to take time off for almost a year to study acting, Sushant Singh Rajput works on fitness videos called Till I Get It Right and a Shruti Hassan, despite her busy schedule, jams with musicians to write and compose songs. While veering away from a busy 'today' to nurture your self may not even be a sure-fire formula for success, it could certainly be a way of keeping your 'ear to the ground'! After all, 'Jab tak kaan sunenge nahi... Zabaan bolegi kaise?'

So what's common between Badlapur, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy and Dum Laga Ke Haisha (DLKH)? Dedicated performances by the Gen X of Bollywood boys - Varun Dhawan, Sushant Singh Rajput and Ayushmann Khurrana, that's what. It gives me immense pleasure to see that the young brigade is pushing the envelope. That they are demanding better roles, investing in good directors and stories and not signing on a project just because it belongs to a top banner. Gradually, the youngsters are realising that the perfect face or that chiselled bod or the six-packs aren't enough. You have to take stock of your craft too.
Another thing they aren't shy of is taking risks. Varun Dhawan took a risk when he chose to play a dark character, who is 15 years older than the actor's real age. The edgy role, which he played with aplomb, won him plaudits throughout. Sushant Singh dared to play an iconic Bengali detective, made famous by no less an actor than mahanayak Uttam Kumar in Chiriyakhana (1967) under Satyajit Ray's direction. He got under the skin of this period sleuth and owned the character. It will be hard for us to imagine someone else playing Byomkesh in the near future. Ayushmann too took a risk by playing an unsympathetic character in DLKH. Instead of playing the romantic lead with the golden heart, he chose to play a real '90s lad and should be applauded for his gutsy choice.
Maybe, the age of the classic hero is slowly fading away. Actors don't want to play paragons of virtue but real flesh and blood characters that give them scope to showcase their talent. That's a healthy trend as it will lead to better writing. Our scenarists won't have to fall back on tired and time-tested tropes but will have to search for new ground. Our directors would think of telling a story instead of just making money-spinning star vehicles.
Showbiz is ruled by its male stars. They have the power to take cinema forward. Sadly, most fall prey to the lure of commercial considerations and the quality of the films remains static. The way forward lies in accepting more responsibility towards your chosen profession. It lies in making choices that inspire others to try out-of-the-box stories and roles. Yes, the biz part is important but you have to continuously rejig the show part of showbiz otherwise the industry will not evolve. Also, it wouldn't be able to satisfy today's demanding audience, which has so many other venues at its disposal. A beginning has indeed been made this year and hopefully, the trend will continue...
It is pretty charming to see how Sushant Singh Rajput began his ascent in Bollywood. Apart from the humungous example of Shah Rukh Khan, not many TV actors have managed to transit successfully from TV to films but Sushant seems to be changing the trend. Be it his movie choices or the possible life-altering decision to step into the shoes left vacant by Hrithik Roshan in Paani, Sushant hasn't made a wrong move yet. In fact, his endorsements too are handpicked and one of them is his tie-up with Nissan. If the recent TVC of Nissan SUV Terrano is anything go by, Sushant definitely is shooting off on the right way to the top!
Sushant was a student of Shiamak Davar and was one of the background dancers at the 51st Filmfare Awards. So getting his dance moves right isn't a difficult task. But what we see in this video is nothing compared to what he has grooved on in his films. These are hardcore moves that need practice and precision. You have to be nifty with your feet and use your body to express and impress! The twists and twirls in this video are spectacular! With the SUV for company, Sushant's many moves are definitely eye-popping and then there is that innocent smile...
Well, Sushant's dance moves are spectacular in this video and we suggest you watch it too to know...
