Movie Review: 'Kai Po Che'

Three new faces, a second-time director and a novel as the basis of the plot; in simple terms, this is what is the essence of 'Kai Po Che'. However, you'd be mistaken if you feel it would be worth a watch for just these credentials. Abhishek Kapoor returns after the blockbuster success of 'Rock On!!' (2008) with a film that brings male-bonding to the forefront yet again. Chetan Bhagat's novel, '3 Mistakes of my Life', is adapted to bring to the screens what promises to be nothing short of magical and packed to the rim with the real India. However, does it set itself apart from similar concepts that have graced Indian cinema over the last decade or so? Moreover, could a virtually unknown star-cast, no item song and no big star involvement really hit a chord with the audiences?

Sushant-Amit-Raj Kumar in 'Kai Po Che'

Sushant-Amit-Raj Kumar in 'Kai Po Che'

'Kai Po Che' is the story of three friends. Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput) is very much unmotivated by anything other than cricket, Govind's (Raj Kumar Yadav) goal is to own his shop and have financial stability and Omi (Amit Sadh) is always finding himself being lured by his politician uncle. When the three set out to open their own sports academy, their only option is to get a loan from Omi's uncle. The academy allows Ishaan to fulfill his dream of training hopefuls in cricket, a sport he excelled in in his earlier years. Govind handles the finances of the business as well as tutoring Ishaan's sister in maths, pending her upcoming exams. Set in 2001's Ahmedabad, the story's turning point is the Gujarat earthquake which happened at the time and this event sees the lives of all three change considerably with the intertwining of their business, sport and also the world of politics all playing a part.

In a mere two hours, it is difficult for a viewer not to be encompassed by the friendship and camaraderie portrayed in 'Kai Po Che'. Under Kapoor's direction, one sees real-life events being woven into a very human tale; the Gujarat earthquake, the India-Australia test series and also massacre of Godhra. The depiction of a friendship – a male bond – has perhaps never been put to the audiences in such a way that isn't entirely coming-of-age but more about different identities coming together and relationships almost becoming that little bit more subtle in the grand scheme of things. There is a delicate way about the characters that finds its way unknowingly to an audience's heart. Whether it be the foundation of Bhagat's writing, the way the story has been adapted or how Kapoor has brought all of this to the screen would be unfair to pinpoint. It could also be an amalgamation of all three.

Amrita Puri in 'Kai Po Che'

Amrita Puri in 'Kai Po Che'

The three newbies, Singh Rajput, Sadh and Yadav, are heroes who will be remembered fondly as those who held a film on their shoulders by talent alone. Singh Rajput plays a not very likable character who is hard to comprehend a lot of the time but he plays him with such conviction that even in the piercingly heart-breaking scenes, the audience wants him to outshine. Sadh's rendition of a character forced into politics is full of many colours but he sees victory in performance alone albeit with a little time in the beginning for him to settle into his character. It has to be said that Yadav is the one who provides the tangibleness that the overall plot needed. His awkward but straight-forward character comes to life in his execution. Puri plays her role as Ishaan's sister and Govind's love extremely well, giving the light-hearted bubbliness that would make an otherwise hearty plot a dull narrative. The ensemble cast of the movie are also perfect right from the Muslim boy that Ishaan mentors to Omi's uncle.

With Amit Trivedi's earthy melodies to compliment the movie and Swanand Kirkire poetically apt lyrics, a three-song strong album creates huge impact in capturing the heart and soul of the movie. Manjha, Meethi Boliyaan andShubhaarambh all serve well and are picturised minus the usual Bollywood razzmatazz and this only adds to their subtle but immensely effective appeal in the overall feel of the movie.

An audience would find it increasingly difficult after watching 'Kai Po Che' not to be touched by the undertones of friendship in all its imperfect ways. When the opening scene is of Omi being released from prison, it's a given that something is going to go very wrong but yet there is a charm about 'Kai Po Che' that is almost hard to put your finger on. It makes you fall in love with Gujarat, with independence, with bromance. 'Kai Po Che' is a soulful, well-made and thought-provoking to say the least. It shows how the imperfection of life has an impact on friendship and ambition but yet you somehow go away with a smile on your face knowing that this is perhaps one of the best films that you will see this year… and the year's merely two months in.

Kai Po Che!: Love, Friendship, and Cricket

Kai Po Che!: Love, Friendship, and Cricket

A-

Director Abhishek Kapoor's third feature, Kai Po Che!, tells the story—mostly in flashback—of three friends in the Indian city of Ahmedabad who, at the beginning of an economic boom in the early 2000s, set out to open a sports academy. The cricket-mad Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput), practical-minded schoolteacher Govind (Raj Kumar Yadav), and passive politician's nephew Omi (Amit Sadh) find their friendship tested by a variety of factors beyond their control, from politics, to romance, to natural disasters. It's quite the story, and while not the most adventurous piece of cinema on record, it's extraordinarily well-acted and has moments of great emotional power.

Based on the best-selling novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life by Chetan Bhagat, Kai Po Che!'s greatest strength is in the depth of its character relationships. Kapoor sacrifices narrative momentum to savor the connections between people, and while this leads to the occasional slow patch in the film it also lends even more richness to the moments of action and drama that do occur. Additionally, the alternating tempo and tone makes events like a catastrophic earthquake, or the escalation of a conflict at once political and religious, even more shocking.

What Kapoor is able to accomplish tonally is aided in large part by a truly wonderful cast. The standout is Sushant Singh Rajput as Ishaan; the role is the movie's flashiest and is given the most attention, but Rajput inhabits the passionate former local cricket star with verve. A great deal of his story deals with his relationship with a young cricket prodigy, whom he nurtures and develops a particular bond with. A great deal of the movie as a whole hinges on this relationship, which is in turns compelling, frustrating, and touching,Kai Po Che! in miniature. The characters of Govind and Omi are a bit thinner, but Yadav and Sadh (respectively) play them with great skill. The friend cohort as a whole is as strong as any one is likely to encounter in film: the purpose of the leisurely build in Kai Po Che!only really becomes apparent in the second half, when suddenly the events of the film are all the more emotionally powerful for the meticulous construction of the protagonists as fully realized human beings.

This, more than anything else, is something rare and notable in Kai Po Che!. The restriction of telling a complete story in two hours often leads to either character moments being elided or a need to streamline a narrative down to its bare bones. But what Kapoor and his protagonists (among whom is the key supporting role of Ishaan's sister Vidya, played charmingly by Amrita Puri) present is as strong a sense of shared history between audience and story as the characters share with each other, and a depth that feels more akin to the rhythms of life than it does with customary cinematic artifice. That this takes place in a film whose most prominent subplot is the manifestly artificial "unheralded sports genius triumphs over adversity" story formula is truly remarkable.

The main debit in Kai Po Che! is in those occasional lapses into soapy familiarity. The main villain of the piece, Omi's gangsterish politician uncle, is a bit of a cartoon character, seemingly bad because someone has to be. And there's a bit of business toward the end where—as foreshadowed in the Chekhovian tradition as it may have been—someone is suddenly running around with a gun in a fashion that again, seems less organically motivated than it is simply that this is the point in the movie where someone is running around with a gun. To be clear, these are not major issues. Neither entirely disrupts the film. They more exist in sharp contrast with the human, organic things the film does right.

Kai Po Che! falls a narrow degree short of greatness. Kapoor's visual sense is occasionally a bit flat, if consistently competent, and, as above, some of the melodrama is a little awkward. But these problems are outweighed by the immense force of the performances.Kai Po Che! is a fine example of that elusive and sought-after entity, the crowd-pleaser. It becomes that thing not by the kind of cynical manipulations one normally associates with the pejorative sense of the term, but by being sincere, pure of heart, and frankly emotional. Abhishek Kapoor and his actors have done a fine job in Kai Po Che!, a film for fans of all stripes.

Fantastic post dear 👍🏼 Got to think of another essay of my association with Sush 😆 coz its not short ,words are not enough to describe a simple down to earth dude like Sush.
AS they say its hard to do things that are simple ,similarly its hard to describe someone who is so simple but yet abundance with talent and skills ,never forgets his roots and is always as humble as ever,Sush - a superstar in reel and real life 😊

My journey with Sushant is pretty short but I hope to extend that by following his future work!

I didn't want to watch this show at first because even though the promos looked good, I didn't particularly like the idea of a mother hunting down the perfect guy for her daughter. I thought it would end up being like many of the saas-bahu shows I watched.

I liked the story of a middle class family and I somehow connected more with Manav than Archana. Manav's struggles trying to provide for his family as well as making something of himself and being a respectable person resonated with me. I haven't really followed any of his offscreen segments until more recently, but there was a charm and subtlety that Sushant brought to Manav, and despite what happened to Manav's character afterwards, I think he's an iconic character. EK's old habits caught up to her, but before that Sushant as simple mechanic Manav was the tale of many real life middle class men trying to make something of their lives and wanting to live a happy and peaceful life. Manav's character stood against all odds with his family by his side, and even when his family may have opposed him, his strength in the face of adversity was admirable and more so because Sushant was basically being Manav, he wasn't acting or playing Manav.

I hope for Sushant to reach more heights of success and as always I hope he remains his humble grounded self, which is one of his best assets.
