Chapter 25: Crossed Paths
April 28th, 2012: Karanjkar Chawl, 4:00 a.m.
I woke up to find a pair of two dark brown eyes staring at me. There was only one other person...
Purvi: *screams*
Kunjal: Shhh! Seher will wake up!
Purvi: What was the need to wake me up at 4 in the morning? That too, scaring the living daylights out of me?
Kunjal: I couldn't sleep last night.
Purvi: ...why?
Kunjal: I was thinking about what I said yesterday and... I'm sorry.
Purvi: Why are you sorry? I wasn't offended on any level. Just really weirded out. *smiles*
Kunjal: Oh... well then I'm sorry for weirding you out. I'm not taking anything back though.
Purvi: Kunjal...
Kunjal: You can go back to sleep now. *smiles*
Purvi: I'll tell you when I have luck with that.
Today, Kunjal being weird is the least of my worries.

April 28th, 2012: Kirloskar Residence, 7:30 a.m.
Riya: You guys? You're up and ready? Before me? That seriously, never happens.
Nikhil: C'mon. It's never to late to start something new. Plus today's a really big day.
Riya: Why's that?
Arjun: *groans* Seriously, Riya...
Riya: What? What's going on?
Nikhil: Hmm... shall we Arjun?
Much to her surprise, the guys burst out singing Happy Birthday to Riya. She stood in the middle of the kitchen as the danced around her singing like the weirdos that they were. They did this every year, as instead of pondering about why she forgot about it this year, she told herself that no matter hoe weird everyone was being, some things were the same. Almost.
Riya: You guys!
Arjun: C'mon! *puts his arm around her* It's my little sister's birthday, and she forgot about out little routine? *shakes his head*
Riya: Mhmmm. If you haven't noticed, I've been very busy lately.
Nikhil: *puts his arm around her other shoulder* You know, pulling your brother's leg won't make him want to gift you anything.
Riya: Gift or not, I call dibs on the cake first.
Both Arjun and Riya made it a point to look at Nikhil when she said this. Instead of shying away, the trio just laughed and cut and fed each the cake.
Arjun: *Hopefully today is a good day. I'm gonna need it.*

Siddarth: Please pick up!
Viren: Hello?
Siddarth: Look bhai, Ranvir-
Viren: Siddarth, look you're my younger brother and I love you. But how many times do I have to tell you that I don't want to hear the nonsense about Ranvir and our sister?
Siddarth: Bhai, please. Try and understand.
Viren: No, Siddarth. You understand. She's not coming back. What if you do find her? What then?
Siddarth: It's not what-
Viren: Look, I have to get to work. I'm sorry, but I can't support you in this.
Siddarth: Bhai- *hanged up*. Fine! All I was trying to say is that Ranvir is coming to visit today and I would appreciate it if you could come. But no, he hung up on me.
Anushka: Give him time Sid. He'll come around.
Siddarth: I hope so.

Soham: *working on a bike* At least they should pay me more for all of this. It's not like I don't work hard.
Soham's boss: Arre! Shut up and work. You don't get paid for running your mouth.
Soham: *shakes his head*

Teju: Anyways Dada, I think we should get something... different for her birthday.
Sachin: I gave you my suggestion, and she refused to have a party. We already cut the cake and stuff at the office...
Teju: Arre haan, but- Oh look… If it isn't Mr. Mechnic.
Soham: Aap?
Sachin: Tum?
Soham: Kya? Have you come to return my money?
Teju: What money?
Soham: The 200 rupees short you paid me.
Sachin: Hey! We paid for service.
Soham: Arre service ko bhul jao. I had to pay him *gestures to his boss* 200 from ny pocket. Ab mujhe de do.
Teju: Hmm. Pehle kaam nahin karte phir paise ke liye-
Soham: Chal. Forget it. I have work to do. *mumbles* Hey God. These foreign people na. Don't understand anything about money and hard work.
Teju: *turns around* Excuse me, but kya kaha tum?
Sachin: Forget it Tej. Let's go na.
Soham: I said what you heard.
Teju: For your kind information, we know all about hard work. Mera Baba ek mechanic tha samjha?
Soham: Oh wow! *sarsactically* My dad was too!
Soham's boss: Aye! Get back to work!
Sachin: Chalo na, Tej.
And thus Soham continued to work and Sachin and Teju left.

Whatever was going to happen, it was going to happen now.
Purvi: Aai!
Archana: Kya hain Purvi!? Why are you screaming?
Purvi: It's nothing serious. I just wanted to make a trip to the temple today before the sun set.
Archana: But why?
Purvi: No specific reason. Chalo na Aai. Please! Please! Pleeeaaassseee!
Archana: You know I would love to go with you, but who's going to do all the work here?
Kunjal: *walks in* Arre Aunty, mein hoon na? Jao Purvi ke saath. *winks at Purvi*
Purvi; Pleaaase Aai!
Archana: You sure you'll be fine na Kunjal?
Kunjal: Haan Aunty. *smiles*
Archana: Well…
Purvi: *gets sad*
Archana: *smiles* I guess. Let me get ready okay beta?
Purvi: Yay!

Manav: Oh hey, Arjun! Is Riya with you? I haven't had a chance to tell her happy birthday and Teju and Sachin are out too—
Arjun: Oh no, uncle, it's just me. I actually wanted to talk to you…
Manav: Oh! Come in! Go ahead!
Arjun: I wanted to ask for a favor… if that's alright?
Manav: Hmmm. Depends. What is it that you want?
Oh crap. What's my story??? Uhmmm
Arjun: Um, you see, uh at work… there's um. Well okay, first things first I was wondering if you could show me some… uh… temples around town.
Manav: Oh. Wait, what suddenly drew your attention to mandirs…?
Arjun: Well, see there's this… *thinks momentarily of Purvi* really annoying employee that I have. Uhm, she—
Manav: Let me guess? You, being the businessman you are made her mad and she claimed that you knew nothing about the religion and culture here. Want to prove her wrong huh? *winks*

Manav: I'm your "uncle" remember?
Arjun: *nervously laughs* Yeah. How could I forget that? So you'll take me?
Manav: I don't see why not. *gets up to leave*

Arjun: *outside* Okay, so I'm not completely clueless. I've heard and remembered enough from my childhood *cringes* to know basically what to do. Just… don't go in with your shoes on and look for someone you know and copy them. I should get through this fine. *sarcastic chuckle, walks up*

Purvi: Keep your eyes closed Purvi. Things'll work out. Just pretend you don't know that—*peeks* Gah! Don't look. Pretend you don't know anything. *peeks again* Purvi! Keep your eyes closed and pray! Pray for what? That everything goes smoothly? *peeks again* PURVI! Wait….

Purvi: Sir… What are you doing?
Arjun: What does it look like I'm doing?
Purvi: Hmmm…. You're pretending to act like you know what you're doing.
Arjun: Am I that readable right now?
Purvi: No… According to me you seem like an okayish… actor.
Arjun: *sarcastically* Thanks. And it's like you were doing any better! Looked like you were about to have a heart attack there.
Purvi: Really!?
Arjun: Really. Wow. I don't think Uncle noticed I left…. He's feeding the children sweets… and so is Archana aunty.
Purvi: *looks up* What?
Arjun: Look over there… *gestures with his eyes*
Purvi: *gasps* Sir, what are we supposed to do when the realization happens? This all went by pretty quickly.
Arjun: No it didn't! You've been standing here paranoid for at least half an hour.
Purvi: God! What do we do though?
Arjun: Well, if it were me… I'd do what I'm doing now and act like we know what we're doing.
Purvi: So basically you want to wing it.
Arjun: Pretty much.

What the two didn't know is that the realization already happened. No, they hadn't seen each other, but forces—of love? Of God? Of Destiny? Who knows. Signs were everywhere that these two were bound to meet today. That they would hear each other's voice once again after 21 years. Even the two clueless "accidental cupids" as they put it, knew what was going to happen.
What wasn't clarified is that Purvi had taken a vow. No, the vow was not to ensure that the two united, but the vow was to let the Almighty do his job. If love existed, these two would be together again. And if not, the world was just full of misery and hatred as it had been before. She was merely a pawn in the game of life. Unknown to anyone, Purvi's hope was that the world would make sense again. Her balance was being tested, as was Manav and Archana's love.

*loud crash*
Purvi: Heeehhh. Nevermind.
Both Arjun and Purvi turned slowly, to find a extremely pale, extremely shocked Archana staring at a rather calm Manav.
Arjun: This is going… rather… well?
Purvi: For you!? *looks at him exasperated*
Arjun: Sorry! Calm down.
Purvi: *takes a deep breath*
Arjun: Now what?
Purvi: We wing wing it.
Arjun: Let's do it then.

Archana: Aa—aa—aap? *flinches*
Manav: Ummm…
Archana: *:O*
Arjun: Uncle? What—
Purvi: Aai?
Hearing Purvi call out, Archana ran out, shocking everyone, especially Manav.
Purvi: Aai! *to Manav* I'm—I'm really sorry. I—I have to go. *runs after her* Aai!
Manav: Wait!
Arjun:*And this, is where is all gets tied up*
Manav: Arjun. Don't lie. You know who she is.
Arjun: *really super confused* Uhmmm… Aunty's daughter.
Manav: I asked you—
Arjun: *still confused* I swear I'm not lying!
Manav: We have to go.
Arjun: Wait! Uncle!
Well that went sort of like it was supposed to. Except for Aunty running away and stuff. But why do I feel like I'm missing some major part of the story?

Things to Think about: Well what's gonna happen between Archana/Manav/Purvi? Will Arjun find out about Purvi or not? 😲 Considering Archana reacted the way she did, what's next for our "accidental cupids"? Who all will be in on the big sting operation? 😕
If you were wondering, by any chance, why this update was so long, it was partly because I couldn't wait any longer (or make you guys wait) to have ArMan meet. Also, you can start expecting the updates to be this long for another 10-11 chapters. So yay! More reading! :D
