Chapter 2- Start Small
Arjun and Purvi had been driving around for nearly two hours since the confrontation. However, they had not completely absorbed the shock and remained mum. The anxiety gradually heightened as the unbearable silence progressed. Without much more gas, Arjun pulled over onto the beach. He slammed the car door and paced towards the shore.
Startled, Purvi ran after him. "Arjun!" The roaring of the waves subdued her cries. Arjun turned to face a panting Purvi approaching. He encased her into his arms as if he were holding on to his dear life. "Yeh tum kya kar rehe ho?" Purvi wept, burying her face into his silk button-up. He smoothed her fluttering hair and moved his chin over her head. "Purvi, this moment is so bittersweet. I've got you but I feel like I've hurt everyone else. I created such a big scene. I tore our reputation to pieces Purvi. I am sorry." Purvi slowly raised her and locked her eyes with him. "What you did was brave, Arjun. You fought for our love. I'm not hurt. I am thankful. Had you not faced Ovi, who knows if we would ever be together," Purvi nestled her head deeper into Arjun's chest, "I love you." Arjun beamed with confidence. "I wish I could stop time for this instance to live on forever," he thought.
"Ghar chalte?" Purvi smiled. "Ok," Arjun said as wrapped his arm around her. They felt as safe as they would ever be with the endless expanse of the night sky and stars blanketed over them. The subtle murmuring of the waves and cool breezes seemed to carry every worry away.
After the party, Archana submitted to an earful of bashing from the Deshmukhs about her upbringing of Purvi. Once her humiliated to the pit, she stepped out on to the terrace. She always came here in times of distress. Away from all the noise, with the wind brushing against her face, the comfort of the terrace offered a bit of alleviation from her otherwise chaotic life.
"Where must Purvi be," Archana thought, "she hasn't called. She's been without a roof over her head for over two hours." Archana clutched on to the pendant of her mangalsutra as worried. "I must call her." With that Archana, called Purvi. Reaching voicemail, she repeated to dial Purvi twelve times only to get the same result.
"Bappa, please protect my Purvi." Archana clasped her hands together as a tear streamed down her cheek.
"Here we are," said Arjun as he pulled into the parking structure of his flat. They took the lift up to the third floor and walked over to room #306. With the turn of a key, an almost desolate room was presented before them. A mattress and drawer lay in the bedroom, TV and desk in the main room, a kitchen adjacent, and a small washroom in the corner. "Tum fresh ho ke aaho. Tab tak mein kuch bana leti hu," chimed Purvi. "Ok," grinned Arjun. Purvi walked into the small kitchen and opened the fridge. She was shocked to see only three eggs, one packet of milk, and two tomatoes. Opening the cupboard, she found a packet of Maggi, a tub of rice, and a container with spices. "For now I will make some Maggi. I will have a lot of grocery shopping to do tomorrow," she chuckled. After putting the water and masala to boil, Purvi charged her cell phone and saw twelve missed calls from Archana. Anxiety paralyzed Purvi.
