it appears ppl in my department still see me as new guy who needs to learn and all. I agree i still have a lot to learn. but it's not that others who are there been too long who can know much more or can do much more. I don't like to be too assertive in every move, rather do what is told as priority.Also given this is first real job trying to form some kind of camaraderie.But seems ppl are perceiving that as me being too laid back

Jay you need to be more proactive and atleast show off that you are working. Its not what you do what you show is imp initially along with doing work
