Chapter 4
Everyone at the Chopra house was so excited to see Anand back from Camp . They were all gathered around him with big smiles on their faces and so much of love shining from their eyes, that he found it simply overwhelming, beyond words to describe how he was feeling. Totally a new experience for him and he basked in their warmth.
So this is what family ties means . He was so used to be alone all his entire young life and it came as a surprise even to him ,as for the first time he truly felt a sense of belonging and an unique sense of identity. It was rather difficult to explain this new feeling but he liked it ...it was different. His dad, his real dad . His very own family . Oh yes, he has finally made his way to his rightful home. !
He looked up at this dad who was hugging him close to him. As if Kunal read his mind, he smiled down at this son and gently brushed his lips over Anand's head.
Kunal: Anand, why don't you take a shower and change and we can all have dinner together. I missed having you around Kiddo! Now run along, let your auntie Seema prepare your favourite dishes ...and you can tell us about your adventure trip in the camp. Ok, son? Cool?
Anand beamed at his cool dad: Sure, Papa, I am so hungry I really feel like eating a double sized Mac chicken Spicy burger .!
Suddenly all in the room froze staring at him in total silence as if he came from the planet of Apes.
Anand thought to himself" Gosh, What did I say?"
Shucks! Anand realized... oh damn, brother is a vegetarian... a slip of tongue...ok remain calm Anand... I can do this...cool, everygthing is fine... nothing to worry, all under control...he said to reassure himself ...and he laughed out aloud to ease the tension in the now deathly silent room.
" Hey, Gotcha ya! You guys should take a look of yourselves in the mirror. Your expressions are comical and so oh ahem... priceless! Relax... I was just pulling your legs. As if I would eat a chicken burger...really, heaven forbid!
Kunal looked at son, with a strange expression on his face... " Hmmm, Son, the day I see you eating Chicken, you probably will give me a heart attack...but you know what? I 'll be pleased... ." He winked at Anand and said " Right, go and have that shower..., its getting late"
Anand went into the room. He already knew the floor plan of this house as his brother had debriefed him on this. He walked into the room, looking around curiously , taking note of all details in a quick glance. Well, there were many photos of his dad, his brothers and his big brother Anand, but none of his mother. His brother had told him that no one talks about their mother and he wonders what their mother had done so bad, that her name is never mentioned. Its like as if she is totally non-existent. A mystery that he and his brother has to unveil. Well, that's what's he's here for...he will find out soon...
He was rummaging though the cupboard for his daywear. He found a pair of Bermudas and a polo T-shirt and he turned sharply around and banged into something hard and he screamed in fright and exclaimed loudly
"Yikes! Auntie Richa,you scared me!
" You ok, Anand? you look like you have seen a ghost?
Anand looked at her in stupefied horror: " Holy cow, You bet! looks like I just did!
Richa tipped her head to one side with her pupils growing larger by the minute: "What was that again? You said something, Anand?
Anand swallowed as Richa looked kinda of scary looking down at him with those heavily made over eyes heavy with mascara and eyeliner :" Auntie Richa, you scared me you know. You have to stop creeping behind me like this ? You gave me the shock of my life, Phew...!
Richa went and squeezed Anand close to her bosom so tightly that Anand could barely talk , let alone breathe but she continued ...
" Anand, I want to talk to you about something...its about you, me and your dad...and I want you to call me...Anand , Anand? , are you ok. What is it baby, are you crying.? You are hurt?
Anand whimpered like a wounded dog in pain , in a muffled tone . " A-U-N-T-I-E Richa, please let me go...I can't breathe... you are hurting me...please...LET ME GO!
Richa laughed with embarrassment : Oh, I am so sorreee baby...oh you poor little darling..." She cooed, and finally released him from the her tight bear like grip and Anand almost stumbled to the ground while gasping for breath, if Kunal did not walk in at that precise moment...
'Easy, buddy, Whoa ... watch out !, I got you" and Kunal grabbed his son, breaking his fall.
Anand looked up at this dad" Thanks papa... I am ok now... I just felt the world world spinning . I better go and take that shower..." and he hurriedly left the room practically running to the bathroom
After a couple of hours later with dinner and the questions and answer session about the camping trip was over, Anand was feeling really tired and walked into his room but only to stop as he could hear voices of his dad and Richa talking softly, arguing ... he listened with great earnest and interest.
"Kunal, have you thought about what I said, the other day.? Clock it ticking...Tick tock Tick Tock... You don't have any choice you know. Why don't you just accept it and marry me. The three of us could all be happy and Siddhi need not ever know about Anand."
Kunal ' " Richa, please...stop talking like a lunatic and give me some peace. Enough...just leave me alone and stop blackmailing me ! Kunal condemned in disgust.
" I want you to give the proposal of our marriage a chance" Richa could be heard hissing angrily
" Well, I don't like being manipulated and intimidated into doing what you want. I don't think the end justifies the means" Kunal, argued forcefully.
"Do you know Richa, what you've really achieved? You've made me appreciate that I could not bear to even consider marrying someone like you!"
"I wont let you go Kunal. I am not giving you a choice! You have to marry me or you risk losing Anand forever from you"
"Or I could just tell Siddhi everything and take my chance with her, Richa." Kunal said is soft undertone.
"No, you wouldn't Kunal. I know you better! Kunal , why don't you see that I love you so much. Why cant you bloody understand it? What's wrong with you?
" Really Richa, you call this Love.? What kind of love is this forcing someone to accept when it is not given through one's free will? I don't love you Richa. I just dont. !Richa, I haven't forgotten what you did to me all those years ago. Accusing me of false rape cases and trying to kill my wife twice. You know very well, the only reason why I have allowed you to walk into this house is because you saved my son from being murdered by his mother.!"
" I am not backing out now Kunal...not after all these years. oh no! no , no, no not your life... you can say whatever you want but you need me as much as I need you to keep Anand with you" Richa said sneeringly with confidence.
There was silence in the room and
Richa: Kunal ,I'll give you a few more days to think about it ...Just for a while Kunal but not too long...hmmm...meantime, just a little kiss ... a hug...
Kunal shouting at : Stop it Richa...why dont you just go...
This must stop now...Anand was shocked at what he heard and knew it was his que to enter, and he called out to his dad to give ample warning to his arrival.
"Papa, I have something to ask..." he saw his dad just in time shrugging his arms to shake off Richa hold and he sat on the half berth, with an angry Richa , standing there, heaving and puffing angrily like a woman who had been scorned by her lover! Anand was cheering silently. " Good.Score 1"
Anand quickly went over and sat beside his papaon the berth. Richa slowly walked over to the bed and sat on the edge of it...now fully composed. All her anger vanished instantly.
Anand was thinking ' gosh this lady is amazing. He did not like the fact that she was sitting so comfortably in their room as if she had every right to do so. He felt very angry . Only his mother had that right. Not this lady! He felt sorry for his mother. He had a sudden recollection of the way he himself behaved very rudely with his mother and how he made fun of her and humiliated her.He need to seek her forgiveness. He realized his mother doesn't have one vicious bone in her body. After hearing his dad and Richa's conversation, he knew now for a certainty that something happened... and his mother is being the major cause of it which just does not seemed to be right...He needs to piece the puzzle with his elder brother's help to reunite his parents but just don't know how as this looks like going to take some time ...to figure out.
"Auntie Richa, its late, why don't you go home?" Anand said tauntingly.
"Call me mom, Anand." Richa said in a coaxing soothing manner
"Huh? What? And why ? Anand asked in a horrified manner
'Mom, call me mom" Richa echoed as if she never heard the consternation in Anand's voice!
Anand splutterre angrily . " Why must I call you mom?"
Kunal looked up and stared with annoyance at Richa and said warningly " Richa...
"Well, Anand, I know you since you were a baby. It was I who brought you home and...I thought it would be nice if you can start calling me mom. Afterall we are like family now..."
Anand looked at her in shock confusion and rattled a lot of questions like an express train " I don't understand, you brought me home? What about my mum? My mum handed me to you? So you knew my real mom?
Richa said uncomfortably . " Er no...ah yes... yes I knew your mom...
Anand eyes grew larger with this new knowledge : "Auntie Richa, where is my mum now?
Kunal stood up and raked his hand through his hair and hurriedly " Anand, that's enough...go back to bed. Richa I will see you off...We will talk soon."
Anand said with exasperation : But papa,no one talks about mum here. This is what I wanted to talk about to you. Everyone one in the camp were talking about their Mums sand dads but I had no idea about my mum at all. And everytime I want to talk about her, all of you shut me up. Auntie Richa, did you just say you knew my mom? How did she look like?
Richa felt that she could have hit herself with her shoe and also banged her head hard against the wall for bringing out this topic. Oh hell, why did she ask Anand to call her mum and now she just opened up an unwarranted attention by arousing unnecessary curiosity about his mum. Why couldn't she let sleeping dog lie.! . She tried to evade the question of Siddhi...but she had to answer something to shut Anand.
"Well, yes, as a matter of fact, I knew your mum. She used to work for my dad's company."
Anand looked in wonder: You mean my mom was a lawyer too , just like my dad!
Richa really looked dumbfounded but was forced to go on. : Yes yes she was...
"Auntie Richa, is that how Papa met her , fell in love with her and married her?
Richa shrugged with an obvious sneer and disdain : Well not necessarily in that order but your dad married her due to some unforeseen circumstances...she was actually in going out with another...
Anand queried in an awed voice " My mom must have been beautiful for my papa to marry her...huh papa, was mum beautiful...yes?
Richa said in a clipped tone: "Actually, your mum was a very simple sweet girl, an average looking
Kunal intervened and said with a conviction : "Yes Anand, you mum was very beautiful." Kunal himself was surprised he said that.. now why did he do that?. Why was there a need to defend Siddhi in front of his son. He just could not bear anyone speaking anything less about her...he still loves her but does she? What a mess!
Richa would not be beaten yet and wanted to have her final say: "Yeah but she was not
Anand: "like you auntie Richa? I meant , she was a very traditional lady wasnt' she? from the sound of it. She is not into those fancy hairdos, tight fitting clothes like you wear, not a modern girl... So auntie Richa, papa, where is my mum now ?
Richa just burst out angrily and shouted shrilly :" Anand, She got lost!
Anand face fell : My mom got lost. What do you mean?
Kunal said..."Anand , thats enough, its late now. You must be tired.Time to go to bed."
But Richa said, thankful that Kunal changed the subject, "Anand, after roughing it out at the camp, you need a good place to rest and relax.why don't you come along with me to my house and sleep in the special room I had done for your birthday? You hardly used that room...and its waiting for you with all the boys stuff..."
Anand shrugged dismissively : " No not today, some other time, auntie Richa...
Richa still persisted : Anand, sooner or later, you need to sleep alone. You cant be sharing your bed with your dad forever you know.
Anand asked innocently :" Why is that so Auntie Richa.? Is Someone else going to share my bed with my dad? What's the hurry?
Richa coughed ...: No, uh...well, you are a big boy now... you must get used to sleeping alone ...start practising...how long are you going to sleep with your dad. ?
Anand said like in a matured voice as if speaking to a naught child: " Well auntie Richa, there's still plenty of time for that... I am just a boy ...right papa?
Kunal looked affectionately at his son and nodded and ruffled his hair playfully . " Yes son, plenty of time..." and he looked at Richa with a blazing controlled fury
Anand asked speculatively :" Auntie Richa, how come you are still not married yet and have children of your own?Arent you the same age as papa?What you must be now...let me see...forty four? Wow, that's really old ...
Both the adults were silent...totally dumbstruck ...but Richa found her voice somehow and said with a fierce challenge.
" I am working on it Anand... soon very soon I will get my family..." She looked at Kunal accusingly as if he's at fault for her current marital status."
Anand said with insenstiviely ": Looks like you are working on it for many years auntie Richa...papa, why don't you introduce someone from your office to auntie Richa? So that she can have her own kid to call mum?
Kunal almost choked with laughter...and was looking at Richa with really a pitying mocking look...
"Anand, she is as stubborn as a mule. When she wants something, she will do anything to get what she wants, isn't it Richa.?
Richa lifted her chin arrogantly " I take what is rightfully mine. That's all. Fair and square."
Anand had heard enough and he just wanted to get rid of Richa from his dad's bedroom at least for today...he knew he cannot solve it today...this will take some time...
"Aunt Richa ' I forgot to tell you . You dad called just now. He wants you to go home fast as he is too scared too stay alone in that big house by himself."
Richa eyed Anand suspiciously :Nonsense , Rubbish... dad scared...we are not scared of anyone...hmph...!
Anand blinked and said with the innocence of a child :"Very true, looks like you whole family like to scare others...
"Sorry, what was that Anand? Did you just mutter something? I thought I heard something?
Anand got up from where he was sitting and walked over to Richa. He pulled Richa up and led her out of the room., out of his dad's bedroom...and he continued to march her to the front door. Time this woman left. She had overstayed her welcome at least for today.
"C'mon auntie Richa, we will talk tomorrow, why don't you go home now before your father comes here looking for you...
"But Anand, about what I said just now, about you calling me mum..
Anand was at the door and opened it widely: "Goodnight Aunite Richa. Sweet dreams.! And pushed her out and shut the door loudly with a bang, behind her and she could be heard screaming " I"ll be back" Like Arnold said in terminator one Movie
Anand, knew that this lady has some answers about his mother's past...he just have to crack it...but boy he's in for a long haul with this Richa lady...not going to be easy...but she holds the key to the Pandora box... that much he knew...
Just then Kunal called him " Coming papa... coming...
He looked at his watch. Anand would be with their mum now...he wondered what was happening over there...they have a huge task ahead of them to reunite their parents...
