Drabble 3: Love or No Love?

"If you don't heal what hurt you, You'll bleed on people who didn't cut you.."

8-year-old Raavi, Shiva, and 11-year-old Dev were playing in the park. A 5-year-old Krish had followed them, absolutely refusing to be away from the trio while they played.

As usual, Shiva was scowling as they were playing 'Ghar-Ghar' and as usual, Dev and Raavi were the 'couple', while he was playing the mechanic who tends to the broken bike Dev and Raavi had brought for servicing.

"Kya bakwas khel hai ye. Isse accha to mein apne doston ke saath football hi khel leta." Shiva muttered as he tried his best to imitate being a mechanic and repairing the broken bike. As he looked up to glare at his 'Maami ki behen ki beti', as usual he found her lost in her 'Dev' land, who kept acting as if he was busy on the phone, talking to his boss.

The only reason he had agreed to be a part of this game was that he felt bad about Raavi crying as some girls teased her for being an orphan. Her big fat teary face was something that made his anger dissipate for the time being. At the moment, if his playing this 'Ghar-Ghar' would mean that Raavi didn't go back to crying remembering her parents, he was ready to play anything.

And this kind gesture wasn't avoided by Raavi, as she adored the frown on Shiva's face. Her gaze had shifted to Shiva involuntarily as Dev continued his act. Rather his over-acting.

On the other hand, Shiva was acting like a professional Mechanic who was really trying to repair the bike.

She felt grateful that the Pandya brothers were there for her, being her moral support. She always liked their company, especially Dev's since he always treated her kindly. Krish was a baby brother she wished she had one of her own. But still, she was happy for having Krish by her side, who always made her laugh with his silly antics.

And then there was Shiva, who was the same age as hers, probably just a few months older than her. He always loathed her bossy nature, and always teased her with his patent dialogue 'Maami ki behen ki beti.' Honestly, how did he ever come up with such a long term was beyond her imagination. It was unique, but the tone of disgust with which Shiva talked, or probably addressed her always got to her. She always fought with him, trying to match his anger with her own.

But there were times like these that Shiva involuntarily laid down his weapons and adhered to her demands, just to make sure she felt better. And secretly, she liked that she had this upper hand on him. So the moment she felt he was overpowering her, she always used her trump card and bingo! He would melt like chocolate-vanilla ice cream.

She let out a giggle as she saw Shiva acting like he was accepting money from Dev who still appeared to be 'busy' in his call, and as he turned, his arm hit hers, which took her by surprise and her body was pushed without her knowledge. She tightly closed her eyes as she had assumed the bruises that were coming her way.

But instead, she felt arms go around her, holding her still in place. She smiled as her prince charming Dev had surely saved her.

But the moment she opened her eyes to gaze in the eyes of her prince charming, her eyes widened in shock as she stared in deep chocolate brown eyes of Shiva, who held her protectively, while a shocked Dev, looking at them guiltily....

---

Raavi woke up with a start the moment she felt something poke her nose. Eyes widened, she glanced up, only to find Krish leaning over near her.

"Bhabhi, aapko Gaumbi bula rahe hain." Krish spoke in his monotone voice and walked out. Raavi's eyes narrowed in concern and then her heart pricked. The ever jovial Krish now appeared like a total stranger to her. He always cracked some nonsense jokes with her, but now, he didn't even tease her for waking up late.

She sighed as she tried to understand why she was not feeling any cramps on her neck cause she remembered falling asleep in an unusual position. Also, instead of lying on the floor, she was lying on the bed instead, with 2 layers of quilt pooling near her waist.

How did she land on the bed when she clearly remembered falling asleep on the floor. A sudden thought made her heart jump in her chest. Did Shiva carry her to the bed while she was asleep?

She remembered the dream that she had. Was she really that dumb that she had always ignored the clear signs that the universe gave to her, to show exactly who was, or rather had been there for her? It was Shiva and not Dev who had always been there with her, to rescue her from falling into the harshest pain of reality and had saved her falling, protecting his claimed 'enemy', and also caring her for like some prince charming.

She felt weird as her heart was still hammering against her chest. Did she even like Dev? Why did she fall for someone who didn't even love her back? Was she that blind that she didn't see the obvious signs that Dev didn't like her the way she did Love? Did she really love him?

And why did this dream only appear now, which was a reality that was hidden somewhere in the deep contours of her heart? Was this God's way of showing her the reality, the truth which had always been there in front of her, but she had turned a blind eye to it? How did she miss this? There were multiple instances that had happened similar to this incident where Dev had failed to protect her, and it was Shiva who had ran for her aid. Yet his rough and harsh behavior always curtained the good deeds he did for her. And she always paid attention to those harsh words, rather than his good intentions. Was she that immature to not understand the mere difference between being polite and being helpful? The person whom she thought was the 'perfect' person was never perfect in the first place. Rather. the one with flaws, who never left a chance to disregard had been the same person who had stopped her pain from overpowering her was the perfect person, who never let anyone see the good in him and always worked in shadows.

As she got up and made her way to start the day, only one thought clogged her mind. How can she ever start understanding her Bhoothnath?

------

Shiva stared at the couple who were sitting at the bench near the store. They looked happy, a glint of love shining in their eyes.

How he wished he ever had anything like that. The moment he had grown up to understand the sensitive relation of a Man and a Woman who get tied for eternity and become Husband and Wife, he had wanted someone who understood him and loved him for who he is. He never liked pretention. He had always been a man who believed in being transparent. He always thought, the more you start doing something for someone which neither you nor the person likes, he always split paths and walked away.

In his and Raavi's relation also, the same thing was happening. He was walking away, for their own good. He had started seeing changes in her behavior, which was unlike the Raavi he knew. The Raavi he knew was always loud and vocal to things she liked, and always pointed out to those which she didn't. And she had always been vocal about her dislike for him. Just under the name of adjustment, she was trying to mold herself in the role of his wife, which she knew she was not fit for. And he also knew she was not fit for being his wife. She deserved much much better. And he'd rather jeopardize his present rather than their future, which he knew would be bad if they remained on two ends of a thread. It's rather easy to cut the thread, instead of pulling through the knots and getting hurt from both ends.

His phone vibrated in his pocket alerting him to the much-awaited call from his best friend who was returning to Somnath after 4 long years.

"Yes Hiten. Kahan hai bhai tu. Tu milne aane wala tha na?"

"Bas bhai, 2 min mein pahuncta hun na. Tu bahar aa jaa."

Shiva chuckled at the excitement in Hiten's voice and quickly disconnected the call. Alerting Kaka that he will be back in an hour, he was engulfed in a bone-crushing hug as he hugged his best friend back.

"Shiva yaar. 4 saal baad mil rahe hain. Finally 4 saal baad milna hua hai humara. Kaisa hai Bhai tu??"

"Theek hun bhai. Haan, aankhen taras gayi thi meri to, teri manhus shakal dekhne ke liye. Aaj Eid ka chand finally dikh hi gaya."

Both laughed as they broke the hug and high-fived.

As they walked, they started talking about random stuff, sharing their life events with each other.

-----

"Kya?? Tune Raavi se shaadi kar li? Aur ab tum dono ka divorce bhi ho raha hai???" Shiva averted his eyes as he avoided Hiten's shocked face and just nodded in response.

"Haan. Aise rishte mein rehke kya fayda jiska koi bhavishya nahi hai? Hum dono ek dusre se alag ho jaaye yahi sahi hoga."

"Tu pagal hai? Tu toh usse kitna pyaar karta tha? Kya hua? Tune use bataya nahi apni feelings ke baare mein?"

"Kya bakwas kar raha hai? Pyaar? Aur woh bhi uss Chipkali se? Nahi, tujhe galat fehmi ho gayi hai. Maine kabhi usse pyaar nahi kiya, nahi kabhi karunga."

"Kise bewakoof bana raha hai Shiva? Mujhe galat fehmi hui hai? Yeh baat unn love letters ko padhne ke baad bhi bolega? Jo tune Raavi ke liye likhi thi?"

Shiva stopped in his tracks as he gazed at Hiten in horror. Hiten just shook his head sarcastically.

"Shiva, mujhe tu Raavi ki tarah bewakoof to samajhio hi mat. 10 Saal se jaanta hun. Ki tu usse kitna pyaar karta tha. Ek baar to jaan bhi dene nikal gaya tha. Yaad hai?"

Shiva stared at the pendant in his neck as he remembered the incident which Hiten was referring to...

5 years back....
