I respect your perspective hypno. so could you explain how KMKT contributed to the good ratings for this show? for instance, do you think people who tuned in to last week's KMKT finale were specifically expecting a post-finale episode or they didn't realise their show had ended? what would the adjusted ratings excluding these viewers be? minus TRP of 2/3 ?
this whole post is about first episode ratings not subsequent epioses.
first of all i didn't say kmkt factor is only factor.
spillover effect matters.
to some extent, live tv viewing is about habit. in many families, they may be in the habit of keeping one channel on. or they are habituated to turning to the same channel at a given time. blockbuster shows especially matter to channel because they bring audiences to their channel which they hope to convert into habitual viewers. i know multiple families who used to have geo on but after the success of radd,nj, mayiri, baby baji on ary (and how badly geo shows drag) switched permanently to ary as their go-to channel. IM's blockbuster status gave many other hum shows a trp bump.
another type of spillover effect that matters are lead-ins and their popularity. if there is one popular show in 7-8 pm slot on channel x, people are more likely to watch the 8-9pm show on that channel. baby baji ki bahuwein is doing pretty well right now so that definitely plays a role in uplifting 8 pm trps on ary. In the US they have done studies that show that lead-ins matter for ratings.
another type of spillover effect is competition on other channels. Shows that go up against AIEJ (Aik Chubhan Si, Dil e Nadaan, are not competitive and there'll be less diversion of viewers to those shows.
Shows of course can get much higher ratings for e1 than that slot average in immediately previous months. but those are buzzy shows. GM got 3.8 on e1 which showed the power of buzz because that slot itself used to have low trps. but AIEJ did not have many views on teasers (on either YT or IG) or have huge buzz (I even checked Google search trends). If the show is breaking a life time TRP record on E1 but did not have high buzz, there has to be another factor driving high TRP.
Shows of course can also get drastically low TRP than what the slot got immediately prior. That happens if the previous show which ended was an anomaly in ratings. A show that follows KMKT or IM would never get a TRP equivalent to KMKT or IM in e1. Or if the show that ended had a premium cast and mass appeal, but the one that immediately followed has a cast or genre that is not appealing to mass audiences.
E1 TRPs are a combo of factors but spillover facts matters. Highly successful shows have impact on TRP that extends beyond the slot and beyond the time when they are on air.
After E1/2, its whether the content clicks or not that will determine future TRP.
