Chapter 9: An unlikely ally (Eng)
Khaani entered the party behind Anjum, her eyes scanning the room for Ayeza. It turns out luck was on Khaani's side. Just the night after her nightout with Hadi, Anjum was invited to a party being organised by Shiza, Anjum's classfellow and Ayeza's cousin. The impromptu party was being held at Shiza's apartment for Ayeza. The ocassion itself was something Khaani was sure Ayeza wouldn't be happy about: a party celebrating Ayeza's newly single status. While Khaani personally felt that surviving a relationship with a man like Mir Hadi was surely something to celebrate, she just couldn't imagine his ex-partner announcing her newly-single status with a party.
Pretty soon, she came face to face with her host. "Finally", Shiza exclaimed hugging Anjum,"You're so late...and that's Khaani right, your cousin?". "Hi", Khaani said pleasantly, extending her hand. "Meet my cousin, Ayeza", Shiza said looking at the beautiful girl standing moodily next to her. "Hello, Ayeza", Khaani greeted her, extending her hand. The girl didn't take her hand. Rather, she stared at her weirdly. "I am sorry", Ayeza replied,"But why do I feel like I have seen you somewhere...I can't remember where...? Are you an actress?". Before Khaani could give an answer, Shiza said,"She is Sarim Khan's sister Ayeza- the man who'll be defeating Mir Hadi in the elections!". Ayeza's confused expression changed into one of alarm. "I hope that's not going to be problem", Khaani said quickly, trying to salvage the situation,"It's a social event after all. And I heard about your breakup...Shiza told Anji you wouldn't mind..." Ayeza shook her head and said graciously,"Of course I don't mind. I'm sorry I was just taken aback. You're welcome to stay Sanam.". Khaani smiled.

After drinking and dancing, it was time for games. "Ok girls!", Shiza announced,"The game is one by one we'll list our ex's annoying habits whoever finds something common will have a shot.". One by one the girls got up from their place and listed the annoying habits of their ex. The list ranged from smelly socks to habitual cheater. Finally, it was Khaani's turn.
In her entire life, Khaani had been in two serious relationships; at eighteen years old with a fellow Pakistani classmate. She had called things off when he(without even asking her) sent a marriage proposal to her home. Her second relationship was with Adam, a British photographer, when she was twenty. They dated for about six months until he got a job with Vogue France and had to move to Paris and both agreed that long distance relationship was something they did not believe in. They were still very good friends though. Before coming to Pakistan, she went on dates a number of times but it was very casual. Nothing to complain about. She knew she had to say something. Her eyes fell on Ayeza, like everyone else, was waiting for her to start; an idea came to her. Finally Khaani spoke up,"My ex-boyfriend was a typical bad boy. Drinking, partying and womanising. He'd change girlfriends the same rate people changed their clothes (chuckling) I knew this... I don't know why...I thought with me he would be different. I thought he really loved me and we had something special. We were together for some time but then all of a sudden
he stopped taking my calls. I was banned from his building. His friends- who were once my friends ghosted me. And then I got to know that his parents has arranged his marriage elsewhere and he was actually two-timing his fiance with me. I never felt so used in my entire-". There was the sound of a glass breaking. It was Ayeza. She flung her glass on the floor and stormed inside her room. "What happened?", Khaani wondered aloud, feigning a shocked expression. Shiza replied,"Please don't mind...your story reminded her of Hadi. He was a complete @$$ to her! Just like your ex. You know he didn't even have the guts to break-up with her in person. His friend called Ayeza and told her not to harrass him. Can you believe it?". Khaani scowled and said,"How disgusting...Shiza, if you don't mind can I talk to Ayeza? I feel so guilty. You organised this party to cheer her up and I ruined your efforts. I can very well understand what she is going through.". Shiza nodded and led her to her bedroom.
As Khaani entered the bedroom, she saw Ayeza looking at her phone and weeping. Khaani shifted uncomfortably: she wished she didn't have to do this but she had no option. "I am sorry", Khaani said,"I didn't realise my story would upset you so much.". She meant it. She didn't expect her fake break-up story to have such an impact on her. "I always knew Hadi was a womaniser", Ayeza said,"But I thought that I can change him. My love would change him.". Khaani sighed and said,"We can't change people Ayeza no matter how much we try.". "Do you know the things I did for him?", Ayeza said indignantly,"Whenever he called me no matter late it was, where it was I would go to meet him. He used to make me wait for hours, I never complained! My friends didn't like him so I ditched them!". "That's where you went wrong. ", Khaani replied annoyed,"Once you let men like Hadi walk all over you, they take you for granted. Whose heart is broken now? Yours! It was your self-respect that suffered. Right now he must be enjoying some party with his next girlfriend.". Ayeza replied wiping her tears,"You're not far from the truth you know. I heard last night he was at his friend's club with some girl in burqa.
Must be some Lollywood bimbo!Stupid b***h!".
Khaani bit her lips trying to restrain herself.
She finally said,"Why are you blaming that poor girl. She's just a placeholder like you. The real culprit is Hadi! First he played with your feelings and the cast you aside like trash!". Ayeza glowered at her words. "I know my words are hurtful but at least they're true: Hadi took advantage of your feelings. You loved him with all your heart. He used you and then dumped you just like his other girlfriends. Ayeza, I am sorry but you are just another conquest for him. What did you think you were any different?(scoffing) I am sure he doesn't even remember your name now."
"That's not true...you don't know what he is like", Ayeza made an attempt to defend herself but Khaani didn't give her a chance. "You know what?!", She said agitatedly,"You desi chicks are all the same: No matter how the guy treats you, you'll defend him till the ends of earth. He'll not appreciate your loyalty Ayeza, he'll see it as a weakness.". Ayeza responded,"What should I do?"
Khaani replied,"Get even. Let the whole world know what a moron he is.". Ayeza appeared shocked at Khaani's words. Finally, she said,"Look, I know Hadi is your brother's rival but please don't bring your politics into my personal life..". Khaani tried another tactic,"Your dignity is admirable Ayeza, too bad Hadi doesn't deserve it. He didn't even have the decency to break-up with you in person.". Defiantly, Ayeza said,"We didn't break-up ok? We're just going through a rough phase. That's it. I am sure he'll call me in a few days.". Khaani shook her head; she was beginning to lose sympathy for this girl. She took the word delusional to another level. "Sure, he'll call you after he marries his burqa-clad girlfriend.". Ayeza retorted,"You are wrong, Hadi is not into all this.". Khaani rolled her eyes and replied,"Oh please, of course he'll get married but only to a girl who can benefit his political career - that's why he never seriously commits to a girl.". Ayeza pondered on Khaani's words. She was coming around, Khaani could sense it. She finally spoke,"What did you do with your ex?". Khaani cleared her throat and said,"I exposed him on social media and then his other ex girlfriends followed suit. His engagement broke and he had to shift to Australia to avoid the scandal.". Ayeza nodded, wiping her tears. After a minute, she said,"I really loved Hadi. I had imagined that one day he'll realise how much I love him and he'll love me back. But he used me...I want him to pay for what he did to me.". Although, Khaani maintained a solemn expression, she was ecstatic from within. She just needed to play her cards right and Mir Hadi will be a dead man. "Then there's no time like the present. Expose him now. It'll make him lose the elections - his very first election! He'll be humiliated.By the way how do you plan to expose him?"
Ayeza replied,"Through social media.". Khaani shook her head,"That won't suffice. Your target audience are Balochistani voters...not many people in that region use social media. You can't go to the new channels what if they alert Hadi beforehand.". "Then what should I do?". Ayeza asked confused. Khaani pretended to think for a moment before saying,"I have an idea! I know a reporter. We can trust him. You will interview with him, that way I can ensure your identity is protected and then my campaign manager can circulate it. Simple!". After thinking for a few minutes, Ayeza replied,"Fine.". "Great", Khaani said decisively,"I'll make the arrangements tomorrow."

The next day
Mir Hadi checked his phone: today was the last day of his ultimatum to Khaani and till now she hasn't delivered. He dialled her number. Khaani picked up and without any preamble said,"Sarim has called for a press conference tonight, where he'll make the announcement.". Hadi smirked and said,"Wow! There must be some connection. It's like you can read my mind.". Khaani countered,"It's not connection. It's the relief I'll be getting to be finally rid of you.". Hadi shrugged," Don't be so smug. What if I need you again and the footage-". Khaani cut him off,"You'll be returning that footage to me tonight Mir Hadi and after that you'll not mention that night again...do you get that? If you mention that night again and consider this political rivalry to be a personal one. And believe me you don't want me as an enemy.". Hadi smiled in spite of himself: it was this fierce side of Khaani he enjoyed so much."So when and where are meeting?". Khaani answered,"Around 6 pm Ali's club.". Without waiting for an answer, Khaani cut the call. She turned around to find Sarim standing at the door. Did he hear something? She thought panicking. "When did you come?", Khaani asked alarmed. Entering her room, he said,"Who were you talking to?". "Anjum", Khaani lied. Sarim said,"I hope you have no plans for tonight, my press conference is at 8 pm. We'll be releasing the election manifesto I need you beside me.". Khaani nodded and replied,"I know I'll be back by 8.". "Please be on time", Sarim pleaded,"I am going to announce my Girls Free Education Plan tonight. I'll need all your support.". "Of course, I'll be there for you", Khaani replied,"You are taking such a great initiative. By the way, what did the dragon think of your idea?". Sarim shrugged,"I don't know", he said," She just heard my presentation and approved."
"I guess she liked it, she didn't want to praise you otherwise it would ruin her form", Khani replied conspiratorially, as Sarim chuckled at her joke.

Khaani checked her watch, it was 4:35 pm. Ayeza was 35 minutes late. They had planned to meet at the reporter's house where she was supposed to be interviewed. For the fifth time, Khaani dialled her number. There was no response. "I am so sorry Adeel", Khaani apologised to the reporter - a contact of Ahmed's,"But I don't think she's going to show up.". Saying this, she left. While driving, she dialled Anjum's number. "Anji!"Did Kinza call you??", Khaani asked angrily,"What is Ayeza playing at?! It's ok if she doesn't want to interview but at least she should have the decency to- What the!(Khaani hit the brakes and started honking loudly)". Anjum asked,"What happened, K?". "A car suddenly came in front of me, blocking my way. Seriously, doesn't anyone have any civic sense anymore?! Let me go talk to them". Khaani stepped out of her car, closing the door with a thud. She reached the car. It's windows were covered and closed. She knocked on the window. On getting no response she knocked again. This time the car's door opened. It was Mithal, Mir Hadi's trusted aide. The look on his face was enough for Khaani to understand the reason behind Ayeza's no-show: Mir Hadi knew everything. Before she could say anything, someone threw a piece of cloth over her face and pushed her inside the car.
