Used to be an avid watcher of Pakistani shows and still catch glimpses as my Mum watches them religiously but one of the things that has put me off Pakistani shows is the preponderance of serials showing second marriages for men.

It's like every other show has a man marrying twice for myriad reasons and I am curious as to the reasons for this as I would assume most of the folks watching these shows would be women and is this not distasteful viewing for them? or is this an acceptable cultural practice?

I say cultural and not religious because I watch Turkish( also a muslim majority country) dramas and there is no concept of double marriages in their dramas.

This post is more to look into the reasons why and not to cast judgement.

We discussed this topic in one of DOTW threads. 😃

Well. Islam allows men to marry 4 women max. In current times most of men settle for one. Only few go for 2 wives. Some of the Islamic countries forbided 2 marriages. I think Turkey is one of them.🤔 That's why you don't see such topics in their dramas.

I don't know if it is common in Pakistan for men to marry 2 women. But in my country Yemen and many Arab countries it happens. And it is acceptible to some extent.🤓

I think Pakistani dramas highlight this topic to get TRPs. As 2 women fighting for a man is a hit among female viewers.😆 you can see it in Indian dramas too. The difference is that in Indian dramas they show the guy shifting between the heroine and the vamp marrying one and divorcing the other many times.. while in Pakistani dramas he can marry both and become link a ping pong ball between them.🤣

Sorry what is DOTW?

Thanks for you reply.

I guess that this is a trope that is here to stay which is disappointing because Pakistani dramas used to be so superior to Indian ones in terms of their story telling.

What really gets my goat is when they try to frame this in altruistic terms - like the guy is doing something noble by marrying this poor helpless woman as if there is no other way of helping her🤔

And yeah to women fighting for men being a hit 😆 that is why we have so many saas- bahu dramas in India.

It because they have an agenda to try and normalise it. The more you see it on TV the more you’re desensitised to it.

I hate it, I know some couples who go through this and I’m telling you, unless they are very Islamic and give both the wives equal justice in time, money, intimacy and gifts, it doesn’t work. The men want to have their cake and eat it, and more than not, it’s the women who are the ones who suffer if not physically, most definitely emotionally.

I wish they would stop showing dramas like this it gives men an excuse to tease their wives about taking another wife, that most women find very demeaning.

Yes it can be honourable in some circumstances but why not do the honourable thing and find her a single man instead?

And don’t get me started on dramas with secret second marriages, this is even worse than openly doing it.

It’s not allowed in our religion so if a man marries a second wife secretly and then his life completely falls apart, he deserves it and I consider himself properly compensated!😡

... okay (takes deep breath) rant over!😆

Everyone has their fictional preferences I guess - for me I cannot watch a show or ship a couple which is not monogamous.

I walked in to a show that my mother watches and the much older looking husband was celebrating his marriage anniversary with his evil first wife and child and then got jealous and upset hearing that his 2nd wife had an innocent, accidental meeting with her ex husband and the cognitive dissonance just had me 🤔
