Chapter 12

Freshers' day was scheduled for a Saturday evening, twelve days after FYs started college. This was actually delayed since the seniors began their classes one week late.

They got into the car. Sendhil started the vehicle and turned on the AC to full blast. She reduced it to minimum when he was looking the other side.

Within few minutes he turned it to full cold. Valli felt like sitting inside a freezer and started to reach out to the switch when he caught her hand and placed it on the manual gear selector. He cupped hers with his left and maneuvered the lever. She forgot the car AC and warmed up to the driver AC. He made no attempt to mask his victory smile. But the Air-conditioner knob was not fated to be in 'good health' during the rest of their journey, for the cell phone started ringing repeatedly and the driver became busy pressing the call and end buttons, much to the frustration of his co-passenger, which she directed towards the knob, followed by him and then her and again him and it went on….

They reached her college; she got down and walked around to his side.

His cell phone rang again and with a wave he sped away. She stood there until the car disappeared from her sight wondering whether he heard what she just said. Two other pairs of eyes were watching them at the same time from different places. One belonged to Aravind and the other to Yonus.

The students were in no mood for classes, some lecturers were obliging but others chose to ignore all signs of denial and carried out their duty better than any other day. And the students continued to remain in their own world refusing to acknowledge the presence of the teachers.

Sendhil walked into the conference hall where many men and women holding equal or higher positions in the department had assembled for an important meeting to discuss the increased drug trafficking in the state and the associated brutal murders that were happening in large numbers.

It was 4 in the afternoon. Nivedha began to feel restless. Rachel's auto stopped in front of a new apartment building and Nivedha realized she had come here before, for the survey. The display on top of the lift showed 3 and Nivedha took the next elevator to floor 3 and sure enough she found Rachel's sandals in front of a door. The door was not properly shut and she could hear voices inside. Nivedha hesitated a little before opening the door to see them walking hand in hand to the sofa, the furniture which Nivedha had helped Rachel to choose. They turned around at the sound of the door opening- Nivedha and Rachel let out stunned cries at the same time; Rachel because she did not expect Nivedha and Nivedha because it was him, her blind rose. He stood there expressionless, looking at the two women.

'Nivedha…Nivedha… enna pleasant shock? This is Vaibhav, he works for the ……… Nivedha… Nivedha…aiye iruppaa… naan solradha……' , Nivedha ran out of the apartment crying.

After the call from his Boss, he had immediately gone to commissioner's office to meet Sendhil and the two had a pleasant talk. At the end, Sendhil had invited him home in the evening and in turn he offered to bring Valli from the college for which Sendhil thanked him profusely.

Nivedha looked ravishing in the peacock-lime saree. He couldn't decide if the saree made her look gorgeous or the fact she wore it made the saree look beautiful. Her conditioned hair was clipped at the top with a matching butterfly. She wore the necklace and the ear rings he had sent her. She had a fancy bracelet on her right and a watch on the left. She glided towards his car, a captivating smile on her face. He got down from his beige esteem and waited for her to come near him. He took her hand and helped her into the passenger side of the car. She got in gracefully. He closed the door and walked to the driver's side.

As Rachel narrated, Aravind Krishnasaami, the right hand of Vishweshwar, drove his car like a mad person and completely forgot about Valli, who was now walking straight into the hands of Yonus Latheef, waiting in the Head of Department cabin with an ugly smile.
