"If people were employed at creating heaven on earth, everybody would be happy; instead each one is creating his own heaven by creating hell for others."
Bangambiki Habyarimana, The Great Pearl of Wisdom

An unemployed biologist got a new job at the zoo. They offered him to dress up in a gorilla's skin and pretend to be a gorilla so people will keep coming to the zoo.
On his first day on the job, the guy puts on the skin and goes into the cage. The people all cheer to see him. He starts really putting on a show, jumping around, beating his chest and roaring.
During one acrobatic attempt, he loses his balance and crashes through some safety netting, landing square in the middle of the lion cage! As he lies there stunned, the lion roars. He's terrified and starts screaming, "Help, Help!"
The lion races over to him, places his paws on his chest and hisses, "Shut up or we'll both lose our jobs!"

The above joke could one day become reality as man lives, destroys, kills and maims the very earth he lives on and calls his home.Maybe in the not so distant future,we will exist on just pills, chemicals inside domes of glass as the outside has become so unbearably hot and void of vegetation and all other life.

What man is doing to his home and the only home of all known life is the proverbial situation where in a woodcutter is cutting the very branch he is sitting on,ignorant to the fact that the fall is going to kill him.

Killer man,Killer man,
you are doing all that you can
to make this planet a trashcan
Kill,kill,eat,eat all the meat
eat what flies,eat what swims
eat all that lives underground
and now you have begun to eat one another

Killer man,killer man
kill to eat, kill all the meat
to eat and to have a feast
but killer man don't kill for sport
don't kill for trophies
for you know only how to kill
and no not how to give them life

you know only how to sustain and hold on to life
but you know not the mystery of birth and the beyond of death
so killer man,eat all the meat
but murder not that you don't need to eat

Bang lang national park

The roar of Buddha had alerted many hunters who dealt in the sick wildlife trade of tiger products, tortoise shells, snake skins and also Ivory from africa all illegal and punishable under thai law.But ever since conflicts based on religion and faith had entered the southern thailand region, the central government in Bangkok had little say or control over what happened in the thick of the southern forest land.

But things had taken a different turn for radical islamic elements from malayasia and indonesia were now making the forests of Bang lang national park their base from which they operated with impunity or fear of authority.Money from illegal sale of drugs, wildlife, weapons were all being used to fund the growth of a terror network and the setting up of a parallel government in the three southern thailand states.

It was into the protection of these people that Murky aka Markandeyan was brought into and it was towards these people that Rudran's mission was leading him to.

Eye of the tiger

Both Rudran and Buddha proceeded rapidly towards the direction of south and after twenty minutes stopped to catch their breaths and more importantly to quickly form a plan of attack for they had neared their foe.

Even from the distance, rudran heard the barks and howls of dogs who were there with the poachers to pick up the scent of tigers and guide them to the cats,in this case the scent of Buddha. Rudran looked at his companion
and hesitated and immediately Buddha whispered " I will take care of the dogs while you take care of the humans."

" I don't need to tell you that there will always be collateral damage in wars and many innocent lives are lost and destroyed. But remember that these dogs are specifically bred, trained to hunt down tigers and leopards and other nearly extinct animals that live in this forest."

Buddha gazed at rudran and watched as his spirit raged " child of the light, you are a warrior and for you there is only two sides and they are good and bad.You are an angel of the stars and you should not distinguish between forms and lives and never ever let your emotions cloud your judgement or slow your hand as you raise it to strike down evil. The outward physical presence is just an illusion and the truth, the soul is what is to be taken into account.Ask yourself why you have been given such great powers and seek the answer.the answer is that you are pure of heart and soul and possess great clarity of mind and although you try to heal and bring back those that have fallen into darkness, remember just like how you stand in light as light, there are those that have been born in darkness and are filled with darkness.Strike them down so that they might have a chance at redemption and maybe born again in the light of good."

Rudran stared into the tigers eyes " Who are you? and how is that you know so much and possess such great wisdom."

Buddha smiled " I am just the wheel of time and i spin as the wheel spins and we have met for a reason and soon you will realise it.But come now for it is time to launch an attack.I am going to go to the left and let loose a roar that will draw the dogs and the poachers to my side, while you can come behind them and take them on.Okay."

Rudran nodded " okay, pretty decent plan and i think it should work."

Buddha the tiger padded off to his left and Rudran took of to the right and after a few minutes he heard the roar of his friend and soon the dogs barked their heads off and the poachers who held them by leashes cursed them for they were being dragged by the dogs who were all excited and were screaming to be let off.

Rudran crouched and saw that although the dogs and majority of the men moved forward towards buddha, there were a few of them who started to veer in a different direction and rudran knew that they were taking this route so as to out flank and cut off the retreat path of the tiger.

Rudran smiled and waited for both the groups to move away and then stealthily started to pursue the last group of men who were going to lie in wait to kill the tiger in case it ran away from the dogs and poachers with their big guns. But then they had no clue as to what they were going up against for the tiger was no ordinary tiger and neither was its new guardian.

A tiger is one of the most difficult of the big cats to spot for its stripes make it virtually invisible for hunters and poachers who go after it for sport and for its body. But one thing that the tiger cannot mask is its odour and which is easily picked up by the dogs which are used to track it and yet the dogs suddenly came to a halt and put up their noses to get a whiff of the tiger and seemed confused as to its whereabouts. They ran around in circles, yelping in frustration and anger and nearly tore each other in the frenzy of the hunt.

Along with the poachers and their dogs were a couple of large white men with big rifles and they were here purely for sport and the rush and thrill of big game hunting. They had paid a big sum in dollars for the hunt and were now exicted that they could finally get what they were after.

The lead poacher was an excellent guide and one who knew the forest like the back of his hand.He turned to his team and spoke in decent english " Tiger climb tree or hiding in cave.we be patient for a cornered cat is dangerous and will kill without hesitation. So,all be ready with your gun safety's on and ready to shoot."

The words left his mouth and travelled towards the ears of his team and clients and that was the last thing the man spoke for parting the thick bushes came Buddha who with one swipe nearly tore the man into two and then in the next millisecond vanished again into the darkness of the forest.

For most of us who live in the city,a charging angry tiger is a sight that will never, ever be witnessed and so it is left for us to understand what goes on or the reactions and after effects of the people who actually witness it.

An adult tiger weighs about 200 to 225 kgs and now stop for a second and imagine the force it carries in its momentum and now throw in those twenty daggers it carries as claws in its four legs and leave the rest to imagination and fantasy.

The split second coming and going of the large tiger and their guide torn into two created mayhem and the two junior guides did the most stupidest thing that a hunter would do in a jungle and that was they gave themselves to fear and anger and let loose the dogs who ran into the forest in pursuit of the tiger.

The remaining six poachers stood in a circle with their rifles aimed at the forest and placed their clients inside the circle and waited for the dogs to bay and bark once they had found the tiger.

The dogs that the poachers had brought along with them were pitbulls who are notorious for their single minded ferociousness and they have one of the strongest jaws and bites in the canine family.Once a pitbull latches on to something it will not let go even if you kill it and these pitbulls were a cut above that.Mean and deadly, five of them went in hot pursuit of Buddha but it would be in vain.

The poachers and hunters stood waiting for their dogs to bark, howl and alert them to the place of the tiger but soon the air was filled with loud roars, growl followed by yelps and howl from the dogs.

The six poachers shepherding their hunter clients trotted towards the area from where they had heard all the noises and came to a halt at a scene of total carnage.

All eight stood in silence as fear slowly started to grip their souls and one Thai poacher shook his head " This is not the work of a tiger for normal tigers don't do this or kill like this. They run away as far as they can from humans and their dogs or at most will climb a tree to escape the dogs and that is how we usually find them but this is different.Maybe it is a mother who is protecting her cubs but then i am pretty sure that the tiger we saw was a male for it was unusually large and i have never seen such a large specimen before this but for an old legend."

One of the white men " what do we do now? are we going to hunt it down or stand here discussing old legends."

The poacher looked at him with a sneer " Mister white man,you want to hunt the tiger.Go on then for i am pretty sure that the tiger is hunting us and we can see what you can do on your own.But right now my priority is your safety and i think it is better if we retreat and come back tomorrow with more dogs and more men."

The poachers were all thai muslims and yet they had not forgotten their ancient legends and buddhist tales. Now they stood jabbering and chittering away like excited monkeys and their two white customers decided they had heard enough and proceeded to take matters in their own hands.

Both the white hunters were from south africa and were not new to the game or to the killing of big game.they had killed lions, buffaloes, elephants on their own continents and now wanted to kill other big game on different continents and take selfies with their kills and take away the souvenirs, such as the skin of their kills that would be sent to them by ship to their destination.

Companion piece on organisations involved in criminal activities

Poaching, hunting are well oiled and well run organisations by deadly criminals with the help of corrupt government officials. If you have the money then you can get anything you want from anywhere in the world. These organisations run in the shadows and many are run by people who ran the intelligence networks in the former soviet state and other european and south american countries. They are loosely termed and passed off as mafias, mobs or cartels and all of us are familiar with their names and titles.

Russian Mafia

Now officially the scariest organized crime group, a former FBI Special Agent called the Russian Mafia "the most dangerous people on earth." They may have as many as 300,000 members across 450 groups, and are well known for having elaborate and hierarchical tattoos. They frequently use military tactics, and their most common activities are terrorism, organ trafficking, and contract killing.

Serbian Mafia

Composed of multiple groups in Serbia and the Serbian diaspora, the mafia was seen by many Serbs as a way out of the crushing economic aftermath of the Yugoslav Wars. With active cells in 20-30 countries, the organization is best known for drug trafficking and gun-running, although several Serbian bosses in Madrid made headlines in 2009 when they killed and ate a recalcitrant member after running him through a meat grinder.

Chinese Triads

Triads are a loose name for Chinese organized crime groups, who received the name from British authorities as a reference to the triangular symbol they use (the character "hung" inside a triangle). The US government estimates they smuggle up to 100,000 undocumented people into the country every year, and they are also particularly active in counterfeiting money. The hub for Triad activity is Hong Kong.

Yakuza

Also known as Gokudo, these Japanese and Korean organized crime syndicates are almost mainstream. They have office buildings, business cards, and frequently show up in gossip columns of newspapers. Identifiable by their black suits and the missing tips of their little fingers (lopping them off to show contrition to your boss is known as yubitsume), Yakuza are often involved in politics and corporate boards of directors. They were also among the first to respond with relief efforts after the 2011 tsunami.

18th Street Gang

Also known as the Children's Army because they recruited elementary and middle school children, the 18th Street Gang (or M-18) is one of the largest gangs in the Northern Hemisphere. They are said to have a membership of more than 30,000 in the US alone, with a home base in Los Angeles. One of their rival organizations is MS-13 (further down this list), and they are known to have connections to the Mexican cartels and some smaller Central American crime rings.

Mungiki

A terrifying group that is part terrorist organization and part religion, Mungiki (which means "multitude" in Kikuyu) favours rejection of all Westernization and a return to traditional values. While they are currently active only in Kenya, they run extortion rackets in the slums of Nairobi and control the taxi industry, beheading and mutilating anyone who crosses them...sometimes also lighting them on fire. The police in Kenya often treat Mungiki suspects to violent retributive behaviour.

Sicilian Mafia: La Cosa Nostra

Despite being a young mafia (it started in the second half of the 19th century), the Sicilian and American Cosa Nostra ("Our Thing") rapidly became the most feared organized crime group wherever they settled. Strictly family-based and hierarchical, the group is very ritualized and has elaborate initiation ceremonies that are open only to Sicilian men. They follow omert, a code of silence and secrecy; failing to do so results in execution.

Albanian Mob

There are over 15 clans that control the bulk of Albanian organized crime. The highly organized and rigid structure of their mostly family-based system has resulted in Albanian mafia cells spreading globally, with a focus on drug trafficking, human trafficking, and arms dealing. They are quick to violence and one of the godfathers, Daut Kadriovski, has been identified as the biggest heroin dealer in Europe.

Hells Angels

Considered an organized crime syndicate by the US State Department, the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club is best known for riding Harley Davidsons and having an almost mythical history of crime attributed to them. The official policy of the club is that they are motorcycle enthusiasts and any crimes committed are the fault of individual members, not club policy; pop culture, such as the 1966 film The Wild Angels, depicts them as ruthless, violent criminals. Members of the gang have been associated with drug trafficking, sex work rings, and extortion.

Mexican drug cartels

Although the Mexican drug trafficking organizations have existed for decades, they rose to greater power with the demise of the Medellin and Cali Colombian cartels. Drug trafficking now makes up approximately 63% of Mexico's economy, and is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths. The "war on drugs" has resulted in dangerous and violent retaliation from the cartels; more than 20,000 people have disappeared, and an investigation into mass graves found a staggering 24,000 corpses. Rape, kidnap, and torture are endemic, and cartel members are often armed with military-grade weapons, like rocket launchers and the ubiquitous AK-47s.

Mara Salvatrucha

Often shortened to MS-13, this gang of mostly Central Americans is based in Los Angeles, although they have spread to elsewhere in North America and Mexico. They are notoriously violent, and were recruited by the Sinaloa cartel to help with enforcement. The gang is reported to have over 50,000 members, who are distinguished by their large tattoos, often on the face and chest, and their distinctive hand signs.

Colombian drug cartels

Until 2011, Colombia was the world's top cocaine producer, but a strong anti-narcotic campaign has resulted in the dismantling of many of the most dangerous producers, such as the Medellin and Cali cartels. At their peak, these cartels hired engineering experts from Russia and the US to help with their trafficking. The disappearance of the larger groups left Colombia's organized crime landscape fractured and vulnerable to manipulation and attack by guerrilla groups and both Colombian and US governments.

D-Company

This group based in India, Pakistan, and the UAE is led by Dawood Ibrahim, an internationally wanted man (and Bollywood star) whose activities go from extortion up to terrorist acts like the 1993 Bombay bombings, which killed 257 people and injured over 700. Ibrahim is said to have ties to Al-Qaeda and the Taliban, and D-Company is funded with billions of dollars from legitimate businesses (including real estate and banking) as well as illegal activities. Currently on the run, Ibrahim is said to have undergone extensive plastic surgery.

Despite what Hollywood says, organized crime is a lot more about maintaining a smoothly functioning illegal global economy than it is about explosions and cement overshoes.

Its top money-making industries are drug trafficking, human trafficking, smuggling migrants, illegal firearms, and weapons, trafficking in natural resources (like diamonds), illegal trade in wildlife (including poaching), the sale of fraudulent medicines, and cybercrime.

He came from the east and he came from the west and between the warriors of light stood darkness and evil in the shapes of men.Hearing the noise, the poachers quickly turned towards the direction and saw a tall man walking slowly but deliberately towards them and then they heard the growl and turned to the other side and saw clearly for the first time the tiger that had attacked them and their hearts nearly stopped in its beating for the tiger that was coming towards them was massive and covered with blood and it held a dead pitbull in its huge, scary jaws.

"The most dangerous people in the world are not the tiny minority instigating evil acts, but those who do the acts for them. For example, when the British invaded India, many Indians accepted to work for the British to kill off Indians who resisted their occupation. So in other words, many Indians were hired to kill other Indians on behalf of the enemy for a paycheck. Today, we have mercenaries in Africa, corporate armies from the western world, and unemployed men throughout the Middle East killing their own people - and people of other nations - for a paycheck. To act without a conscience, but for a paycheck, makes anyone a dangerous animal. The devil would be powerless if he couldn't entice people to do his work. So as long as money continues to seduce the hungry, the hopeless, the broken, the greedy, and the needy, there will always be war between brothers."

"Where were you born?"
"On a battlefield," [Yossarian] answered.
"No, no. In what state were you born?"
"In a state of innocence."
Joseph Heller, Catch-22

Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu

The six Thai poachers and the two white hunters although startled at first soon relaxed and their inherent traits of evil wisdom and cunning came to the fore. One of the white hunters looked at rudran and then took a look at the huge tiger behind them and whispered " The tiger is the one who can do the most damage and so all of you concentrate on the cats head. The man looks a bit weird and lost and frankly speaking looks like a character who is time travelling for his robe and weapons make no sense.Maybe,he has no clue on how to operate that rifle for he is carrying a spear and a sword hangs by his left hip. So,all of you be ready and when we move we will move against the tiger and then handle that man."

Rudran looked at Buddha and both exchanged looks that spoke " Can you believe these idiots and their plans."

Rudran gently laid down the spear and raising the rifle, expertly cocked it and saw that the bullet was still in its breech and then he looked at both the white men " hallo.jy ver weg van die huis af."( you are far away from home)

The South african excited and relieved that Rudran could speak afrikaans langauge nodded " yes.we is van Suid-Afrika.is jy van ons land te?" ( yes.we are from south africa. Are you from our country too?)

Rudran " no.but i also know that all of you understand english.so first just to clear your doubts about me and what i know." saying this rudran raised the rifle and looked at it " Remington,Model 700 BDL. Sendero SF.Special long range .Bolt action.Adjustable rear sight and front ramp sight.X-Mark Pro adjustable trigger; recoil pad; and Monte Carlo stock made of American walnut."

He looked at both the white hunters and then at the Thai poachers " Enough tech stuff for now you know what i know and just in case you have any doubts, remove them right now for let me tell you in all honestly that i know a lot."

The senior most thai poacher who had now taken charge after the death of their main guide looked at rudran " What do you want?"

" I want all of you to slowly lay down your weapons and then we will talk about what we want and more importantly what the tiger wants."

The two thai men who were behind the rest slowly reached for the triggers of their rifles and rudran calmly gifted them with a bullet in each of their chests and they fell screaming in pain and soon died as their companions watched on in shock and horror.

The remaining four Thai men and the south africans slowly and reluctantly dropped their weapons to the ground and then the south african spoke in anger " What do you want mister? We are not hurting anybody and just hunting animals? So,why are you causing trouble for us?"

Rudran clenched his fists in anger and then slowly regaining his composure " Hunting but not hurting. Now those two words in one sentence do go hand in hand rather well,i think. So,let us hunt.really hunt.I want all of you to start walking towards where ever it is you came from and i am going to count to 100 before i come after you and then the hunt begins. All right, now get going."

Rudran started counting " One,two, three" and looked up to see the white men screaming at him and begging him for their weapons.

Rudran's lips expressed his deadly intent " all your lives, you have been murdering animals by shooting at them from a distance and not giving them a chance to run or fight back. But i am giving you all a chance to defend yourselves. You came here to hunt and so you will hunt. And just like the unarmed animals you have killed all your lives, you too will learn what it is to be unharmed and to be hunted."

Rudran looked at the four thai men " Khu chex n thephniyy la kr kkhn.Chex wi khxng p d m phex kkhn khxng phwk khe." ( do you believ in fairy tales and revenge.believe it for the spirits of the forest have come for their revenge."

Rudran looked at all of them and started counting " one, two, three, four, five" and kept counting as the six ran into the forest.

Then he looked at Buddha " we need one thai guy alive and free,so we can follow him and gather information about the rest of his gang and then we can decide what to do and how best to handle them."

Buddha stood huge on his four legs and roared and the sounds carried deep into the forest and were heard by the men who were fleeing from them and who understood that the counting was over and that the hunting had begun.

The sun sank into the west and the forest was covered in darkness and the poachers and hunters ran thinking that they were safe but soon they would realise that the day was better than the night for what hunted them was worse than evil.It was righteous anger and that rage can burn anything and everything to ashes.

Rudran planted the spear into the ground and then hung the huge shield on it.He removed his shirt and threw it away and then wrapped himself with the yellow robe and knotted it.Placing his hand around the hilt of the sword,he slowly drew it and gazed at its shiny surface and the wheel of time spun as past and present collided and became one.

Then they jogged into the forest in pursuit of their prey and the forest and its inhabitants looked on as once again a protector ran through their lives, leaving light in his footsteps and they sighed as the legends and myths became a reality.

"When Shiva beats his DAMRU- Evil Shakes !! while the Wise Awake!"
"Fire is His head, the sun and moon His eyes, space His ears, the Vedas His speech, the wind His breath, the universe His heart. From His feet the Earth has originated. Verily, He is the inner self of all beings.
"Oh you the creator, you the destroyer, you who sustain and make an end,Who in sunlight dance among the birds and the children at their play,Who at midnight dance among corpses in the burning grounds,You Shiva, you dark and terrible Bhairava,You Suchness and Illusion, the Void and All Things,You are the lord of life, and therefore I have brought you flowers; You are the lord of death, and therefore I have brought you my heart"This heart that is now your burning ground.Ignorance there and self shall be consumed with fire. That you may dance, Bhairava, among the ashes. That you may dance, Lord Shiva, in a place of flowers,And I dance with you."

monsoon mirage

The mirage of rain on my window is just a drizzle and very slight
like the hesitant pitter patter of a babies first walk and its first talk
the coming monsoon announces itself like the babies few and rare coos and gaahs
a promise of more to come, heavier showers, non stop talks and rambles
the gentle drizzle leaves a few signatures of its landings and slidings
on my dust covered window in dots and lines

A sudden gust carries away the rain and the coming sun promises more heat and pain
the tall trees dance in the early morning and through the dusty glass
they look like those women possessed waving their hair around
as they dance in a trance and are beaten with neem leaves

my neighbourhood has been filled with rumbles, tumbles and screech of machines and tippers
as they brought down a 40 year old concrete jail that housed six families
i stood last week on my way to the gym and watched with my mouth wide open
as the building lay with its innards open and lay wilting under the sun

I thought sadly, two years to build and just five days to bring it down
how many births, how many death, how many happy and sad moments
i smiled shyly and wondered if many had kissed and made love in the building
real kisses sharing the breath of each others souls
real love the joining of each others bodies as one

slowly,my back creaking i bent low and picked up a small piece of brick
and gently blew the dust of concrete and sand away
and its orange origins slowly became visible

i walked on and did not have the heart to throw the piece of brick away
for it whispered " memories,i am filled with many memories"

i nodded, yes i understand for like you i too have many memories
and like you i too am a piece and puzzle of life
and although just a piece,i too fit snugly and have a building
which i am a part of

so i extended my right arm and then threw the piece of brick
and watched it arc its way and land on the other side of the road

"The point of marriage is not to create a quick commonality by tearing down all boundaries; on the contrary, a good marriage is one in which each partner appoints the other to be the guardian of his solitude, and thus they show each other the greatest possible trust. A merging of two people is an impossibility, and where it seems to exist, it is a hemming-in, a mutual consent that robs one party or both parties of their fullest freedom and development. But once the realization is accepted that even between the closest people infinite distances exist, a marvelous living side-by-side can grow up for them, if they succeed in loving the expanse between them, which gives them the possibility of always seeing each other as a whole and before an immense sky."

Who is Vinny Desautels?

When a story goes viral, it reaches audiences far and wide with people begging to know more. When a viral story tugs at the heartstrings of those who read it, they can't help but to be curious about the details of those involved. Now, a little boy's personal and heroic story, which went viral earlier in the week, has people asking about him and wondering: Who is Vinny Desautels?

Vinny was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer and is considered to be a true hero. But what was so special about his story and what landed him in the news in the first place?

First, a little background. Seven-year-old Vinny, who's from Sacramento, California, is in the second grade. After spending two years growing his hair out for a very special reason, Vinny cut off thirteen inches of his long blonde hair and donated it to "wigs for kids with cancer" " already a very heroic and good deed. "I want to help people so they don't have to go to the doctors to fight cancer," Vinny told Sacramento Fox affiliate KTXL on Sunday.

The process wasn't always easy either. "During that time he was mistaken for a girl many times, but Vinny took it like a champ and was like, 'Nah, I'm a boy,'" Vinny's father Jason Desautels, a combat veteran, said in a comment to the outlet.

Then, in a disheartening turn of events a short while later, doctors diagnosed Vinny with "stage IV aggressive cancer," according to KTXL-TV. The cancer has resulted in various growths on his hip, one eye, nose, and right cheek. "Well, the veins from my hip are traveling to another place right behind my eye and it's making it squinty," Vinny told the news outlet.

Although doctors are not yet sure what kind of cancer Vinny has, The Washington Post reports that doctors are almost certain that the cancer causing his tumors is Ewing's sarcoma " a rare cancer that develops in the bone or in soft tissue. Doctors are hoping to confirm that before beginning treatment.

In the meantime, Vinny has a strong will to fight. "As long as we are doing this as a family, we got this," said Vinny's mother, Amanda Azevedo, who's currently six months pregnant.

REDEMPTION 146

"Have patience with everything that remains unsolved in your heart. Try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books written in a foreign language. Do not now look for the answers. They cannot now be given to you because you could not live them. It is a question of experiencing everything. At present you need to live the question. Perhaps you will gradually, without even noticing it, find yourself experiencing the answer, some distant day."? Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet

Blood moon

Rudran felt a surge of power in his legs and even the slight fatigue that he had felt earlier began to fade and with every step he felt he was getting stronger and stronger and soon both he and buddha the tiger were racing at great speed through the darkness of the forest and then they came to a halt.

Rudran looked at buddha " They have split into two groups, either to make good their escape and have a better chance at one of them doing so or they are planning an ambush.what do you think?"

Buddha looked into the forest, and then raised his head and sniffed the air and turning to rudran " Yes.you go right and i will go left. But i am not in the mood to spare any lives and so it should be done by you and then we will follow covertly the one who thinks he has been spared and makes his way towards his base camp. Then, there we will decide what to do and how to do it."

Rudran hesitantly looked at buddha " Who am i? really, who am i or what am i ? Why do i feel that i have been here before and have waged battles millions of times against a million enemies? "

Buddha the tiger gazed fondly and his soul whispered and rudran heard and felt it in his soul " Master, the time is very near and soon all your questions will be answered. But for that to happen,we have to go to the lost caves that lie under the river and then you have to be born again and only then you will come to understand who you really are.Me,my kin and the monk have very little knowledge about your history and yet we are summoned by some strange spirits to come and aid you as you battle against the darkness that fills humans with evil. The energy that is given to me is just a speck of dust when compared to what you have in you and you are limited only by your own mind and will. But let us finish this task on hand first and then we will go to the caves."

Rudran ran into the darkness and the big cat stood for a second and then it too swiftly vanished into the darkness.

The poachers and hunters had indeed split into two and in group of threes they had made good time towards their destination but now with darkness having descended on the world, they were finding it a bit of tough going, but still jogged persistently in the direction of their camp for they knew that if they did somehow manage to reach it then they would have a small army to protect them and take on the madman and his tiger.

Birds overhead and beasts from their hiding watched the tall man expertly negotiate his way and unwaveringly towards his prey.leopards and tigers that would have made a quick meal of any unsupecting humans who had the misfortune to be caught and lost in this ancient and primitive forest hesitated and shrunk back into their hiding for leave alone the man who ran alone and without casting any scent of fear, they and all the creatures of the forest had heard the roars of buddha and knew that the man was under the protection of the king and none were present who ahd the will or might to face up to the huge tiger for he himself was under the protection of the spirits that roamed the forest.

The clouds cleared to reveal a crescent, sliver of an yellow moon and the thai poacher who ran behind his white customer stopped suddenly and turning back quickly scanned the darkness of the forest and saw a pair of green eyes about 100 ms from their position.

Fear made his voice tremble " I kept thinking it was the tiger but those eyes do not belong to the tiger.I am not sure what creature has eyes so green that shine so bright in the dark."

The white hunter gasping for breath " what do you mean green eyes? It must belong to that huge tiger for what other creature is after us."

The thai poacher shook his head and in his broken but understandable english explained " Tiger standing between 3 and 4 feet" and he indicated the height was up to his navel and then continuing " these eyes, green eyes belong to tall animal, taller than me."

Further down south,a few kms away from Rudran,Buddha finally caught up with the other group of the poachers and hunter and with a loud roar, launched himself.

The bloodcurdling roars, growls and screams of death raced through the forest and rudran launched his attack, although he killed the white hunter and one of the poachers and pretended not to have seen the lone thai man slink away into the darkness, making good his escape.

He crouched low on the ground and gave the escaping man a few minutes of headstart and then quietly followed him.Soon Buddha joined him and on silent feet they followed the man into darkness as he unwittingly led them to his main base camp.

Six degrees of separation

Growing up in the small bylanes of bangalore,i lived my first five years in a house among many houses that surrounded a courtyard. The courtyard itself connected two small bylanes and this made for many a interesting game of hide and seek. But it also gave me time to cry, bawl and emotionally blackmail my mother so it would result in her buying whatever damn eatable thing that went past our street and if my sweet, twinkling of the eyes didn't work then the tears blooming in them would normally do the trick by the time the the candy man circled and come to the road on the other side of the courtyard. So,give or take five to ten minutes was all it took for me to prise a 5 paisa coin from my mothers vault, although it was invariably given along with gifts of few knocks to the head and a few slaps to my non existent rump.My head, blessed me was as strong as rock and could take the knocks from knuckles and bangs unlike you know my posterior which left me bawling in pain and smiling in relief seeing the five paisa.

Kulfi, sherbet vandi,5 paisa and 10 paisa stick ice creams pushed in small crates on wheels and always raja or rani ice creams, cotton candy, mangoes slit, cut, diced and filled with chili powder and salt were some of the items that floated past my world. But the word " Mittai,Mittai" had me and the rest of the tots, brats and kids run to their mothers begging and bawling for 5 or 10 paisa.

An old man carrying a stick somewhat like christ carrying the crucifix would periodically make his orbit around our neighbourhood as if he was in the know how of how much he could sell in that particular street on that day.Well,i guess he knew he would not sell much if he came every other day and so like the orbits of planets and moons,he would orbit around us once a week and mostly saturday afternoons or sunday afternoons his path would cross our paths.

The thick, tall stick would have these multi colored, soft candy wrapped around it not unlike a colorful bright snake wrapped around a branch of a tree. The only protection that sweet, soft candy had with the outside world filled with germs and pollution was a dirty plastic cover which most of the time flapped in the breeze like the skirt of a female neither protecting nor revealing.

But for me,more than the multi colored mittai,it was the various designs that the man would magically conjure up that was the ultimate treat.Sadly,i always wondered why he tied a mittai watch to my wrist and never conjured anything else and i was always left to envy the designs that others carried away, larger in size and shape and it took me a long time to understand that for 5 paisa, the only thing he could eke out was a thin wrist watch.

Let me turn the knob on time and flash forward the hands to somewhere in 1980 or 1979 for that was when i got my first watch,a casio or seiko was it.Totally encased in shiny steel, blue face with tiny hands moving round and round and well i was in heaven and for a long time and until the crown prince bujju,my guardians son got a seiko digital watch which had both times in numbers and hands.Double delight for him and a double whammo for me.But unlike me,the smart gully bas***d, bujju was a rather timid and a naive child and in a few months time lost possession of the watch when he was taken in by a conman who expertly slipped the watch around the young boys wrist.well, for a few weeks i flashed my watch " neighbours envy, owners pride " until they gave him a gold watch. Damn my queen and her prince.well gold and kings always go hand in hand while steel goes with menial foot soldier and distant cousin.

I spent long hours in total fascination with my first watch, watching the hands go round and round and yet somehow i could not understand the concept of time or its passage and that i had become older, even though it was by an hour, day or week.Well now i kind of have an inkling as to what the hell is happening.

There are many things that i have no clue as to its origins and the first on that list is the mystery of the memory of calling my parents " Mummy and daddy".

Reddy boy, growing up in bangalore gully and yet here i was using these english terms of endearments and as far as i can look back i did so and i wonder who taught me them words rather than amma or appa.

But let me confide in all of you that even back then when i was just two or three,Tamil, madras filled my world for there were countless tamil people who lived in the courtyard and i was exposed to my future world at a very early age.Who would have thought that one day i would stand next to superstars like Vikram, nayanthara, gowthami, radhika, jeyam ravi and be a tiny part in their films.Definitely not me,with my torn khaki shorts, khaki hair, burnt khaki skin for my dreams were of something else.

Even before i heard about Rajkumar, the late kannada superstar,i heard about MGR and shivaji and the songs of Vali,Kannadasan and M.S.vishwanathan and the glorious voice of T.M.S.Nights was the realm of my drunken, alcoholic, abusive daddy who was put to sleep by lullabies sung by kishore, rafi and naushad. So tamil music in light of the day and hindi music in the dark of night and lying next to my dad with my late brother Navin i used to stare and wonder about the stars that twinkled, glittered like diamonds in the sky and invariably i used to fall asleep with the other sweet lullaby " Mittai,Mittai."

Lots more, much more and sure to be continued

Purpose and my real purpose

"Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly;
Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?'
Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land;
Man got to tell himself he understand."
Kurt Vonnegut, Cat's Cradle

Purpose,is a word that we use quite often in our daily life and its activities and yet we rarely use it in relation with life itself. The minute you frame the question and question the very purpose of you and your universe then many other brain damaging questions follow suit and if you really asked the question from that quiet and pure essence that you rarely share with anybody but you do stem your prayers and anguish from that secret source when you are bawling before god or generally having a mind or mindless conversation, then it just latches on with its claws and never lets you go.

What is the purpose of life?
why am i here?
who am i?
where am i?

W*F,Don't you have anything better to do with your time? satish, many souls greater than you will ever be even if you live a trillion lives have asked this and yet that have sadly escaped with answers that are really illusions and is much more comparable to being stuck in a dark maze without lights.

For many, ostrich with its head buried in the sand is the best way to go rather than the above mentioned soul searching torture sessions.

Woman, man, sex, reproduction, children, family tree not withstanding you wonder if there is more to life.I have seen this scene in many films and have heard it with my very own ears, where in people discussing their children's future and a seemingly wise man will come up with this supposedly miraculous and wise solution and that is" marriage aana, everything will be okay" or "oru kaal kattu potta ellam sariayidum" and my reply to that is"podanga ".

Real marriages, real love, real friendships and if you are blessed with one or all three, then you are a lucky soul. But even with all that you realise that a voice has woken up and has begun to speak up,slowly at first and then it gets to where you are staring blankly not knowing that people and the world around you have been staring at you for a long time and have finally concluded and confirmed the fact that you are a raving lunatic.

Dogs know it as does the human world that my real name is Nai satish for i spend a lot of my parole time with dogs and parole time means when my wife lets me out of the house. But i think my parole time,my exit out of the house is in reality her parole time.Wah re wah, satish bhai, kya gyaan.well, folks marriage and bonds will do that to you.

Trust me,human watching does really shed light on how primitive we still are when it comes to approaching others, being with others and maintaining a certain decorum and dignity through the daily interactions.Sadly,i have been told a million times that i lack the two DEES in the above line and some have called me uncouth and controversial.okay,i can live with that.

But back to drama and daily episodes on the beach.Besantnagar beach fills up by 5.30 am and the majority of the crowd is of old people from the ages of 50's to 90's.The late subramaniam was 106 when he passed on last month and now there are just a few in their early 90's and i have my doubts if they can crack a century on debut.Okay,in this avatar i mean.shit, that doesn't make sense.

There are many in their early eighties and seventies and they form their own small eccentric clubs and very territorial about it and their members.Since i am a familiar person by being in Besant nagar for a pretty long time and by way of my puny film and tv career,i have an exclusive pass to all the clubs and yet they always make me feel like an outsider. But when a new ad is on air and i am on tv every other day,the greetings and the volume in which it is delivered is loud and there are lot of back slaps and wishes thrown at my mug.Well that fades away quickly and soon the old familiarity breeds contempt seeps in and i am again an outsider.W*F OLDIES.

As always there is a center point of focus,an ALPHA or beta around whom the rest and various levels inhabit the group and it is quite amusing how they work.

For instance i have a joke or an incident to share and i will begin to say it when the members of the outer circles will immediately cut you short and turning to the ALPHA go " i wanted to say this yesterday and i completely forgot about it" and will start his own train of talk or thoughts leaving me with my gob open and helplessly whining " wait people,i have yet to finish my speech".

So even in old age and like in dogs you have an ALPHA and BETA and if you are not a known or famous person then you will be relegated to sit and stare at the others feeling lost and lonely all the while from a distance.

As for me,i am true to myself and gradually fade my entrance and exit and without handing over my exclusive club membership to theses clubs,i slowly slink and soon merge into the shadows and background and back with the dogs where Nai satish is the ALPHA.I mean alpha of biscuits which i feed the dogs with.

Purpose,i began with that ponderous, preposterous, pointless and philosophical word such as that and i have rambled to the end purposelessly. That is right for there is no real and right purpose and only priorities and duties and that in the end cannot be termed as purpose.

" My purpose is you,to love you and look after you.You are my purpose."

Seriously, ladies and gentlemen your purpose is you, only you and only you can know and understand what your real purpose is or what you really need.

But on a more comic note,my wife asked me what my purpose was and my reply was "TIFFIN BOX" and she went the mallu way of " hey" and i nodded with purpose.

She flexed her muscled legs and her calves popped out " explain"

I squeaked " tiffin box is a dream sequel for the film lunch box and i hope to get a small role in the film for then i can get to act with my dream girl Nimrat kaur who is my real purpose."

Well.the last thing i remember is something flying, flung at me and i am sure it was a remote.Lights out

30 years since 'Mouna Ragam': the Mani Ratnam we miss
Compared to his more recent romances, Mani Ratnam was leagues ahead with "Mouna Ragam".

Like many of the landmark films of the 1980s, I had watched Mani Ratnam's breakout hit "Mouna Ragam" at a time when I hadn't yet crossed paths with ideas like feminism and gender equality. Though I retained fragments of the film somewhere in the recesses of my mind, the details had long since escaped conscious reflection.

With the 30th anniversary of the film rolling by earlier this month, I returned to the film expectant and hesitant by turns. Playing on my mind was the question of whether the film could stand up to renewed scrutiny with so much having been written and said about the institution of marriage in the intervening decades.

For the uninitiated, "Mouna Ragam" tells the tale of an arranged marriage that is hobbled from the start by the asymmetry of feeling between the two spouses. While Chandrakumar (played by Mohan) or CK, as he's called, wants to be an enthusiastic and caring husband, his wife Divya (Revathi) enters the marriage reluctantly, only out of the guilt of causing her father's heart attack by her initial refusal of the match. Burdened by the emotional remnants of a past relationship, Divya finds herself unwilling and unable to love her husband, but is eventually won over.

Expectedly, there are elements of the story that don't sit well if we read them according to today's standards. So let's get done with them first. When Divya first objects to her marriage, she does so with principled arguments against the idea of arranged marriage (asking at one point if she is being sold off to the lowest bidder in terms of dowry). She wants to study further, she declares instead. But as the movie progresses, we find out that these vehement declarations were a cover for feelings she still holds for a dead lover (Karthik), a Robin-Hoodesque strongman, who participates in violence in the name of certain un-enunciated principles.

That Divya is only unwilling to participate in her current marriage because of a previous relationship is something of a letdown, in an otherwise interesting premise. That the flashback of that relationship shows it starting off with the "don't take no for an answer" method that seems standard courtship protocol for Tamil "heroes" adds to this disappointment. Though, to be fair, it is far less aggressive and offensive than some of the examples we see today.

Drawing as it does from a refusal to move on from that first relationship, what initially seems like a spirited resistance to arranged marriage from Divya gradually become reduced to a naive stubbornness. Indeed, quite late in the film, when Divya has started to come around, but CK hasn't realised it yet, he accuses her of being childish, and declares that such childishness can only be tolerated up to a point.

Take that easy crutch of the past lover out of the film, however, and there are quite a few engaging touches to the film that make you see why this film established Mani Ratnam's reputation as a writer and director. Against the enduring mythologising of the good Tamil woman as quiet, self-sacrificing, and self-effacing, Divya is a breath of fresh air. She has a spark of irreverence, an insistent recognition of her own desires, and a fairly clear-headed understanding of her own strengths and short-comings. And Revathi plays her with an exuberance and energy that is quite a treat to watch. Her no-nonsense declaration of why she would not make a good wife to CK when they first meet, for instance, is one of the highlights of the film.

And Mani Ratnam ensures that the film stays focused on Divya and her particular experience, and this is what separates "Mouna Ragam" from other similar films like the Bhagyaraj-starrer "Andha Ezhu Naatkal", which focuses more on grand pronouncements about marriage.

CK is the other strong pillar of the film. Starting off with a dignified forbearance at Divya's resistance to him, he gradually veers into passive-aggressive territory as the marriage seems less and less likely to work. Thus, when the tables turn, he throws back at Divya some of the very lines she first uses to disabuse him that their marriage is anything more than an empty performance (the reference to the thaali as nothing more than a yellow-dyed string around her neck, for instance).

Considering how often marriage gets framed onscreen in passive-aggressive terms, this could have been a major self-goal, but the film holds CK back from going too far down that road, so that it adds texture to his character without ruining him in the process.

But what's most interesting about the film is its willingness to engage with the D-word (a taboo in its time) - divorce.

The first time CK and Divya go out in the city together after they are married, he tells her he wants to buy her gift, and she says that the only thing she wants is a divorce. A day later, gift-wrapped on the coffee table, is a package containing anklets and divorce papers. "Choose what you want," declares CK. And Divya holds the anklets for a few seconds before resolutely signing the papers. Seven days after they're married, the couple is filing for a mutual consent divorce.

This may not seem like a big deal now, but the Censor Board reportedly wanted to give the film an A' certificate because it dealt with divorce thus.

It isn't possible to talk about "Mouna Ragam" without mentioning two other high-water marks in the film. The first, of course, is the incomparable Ilaiyaraaja whose wonderful songs stay with you long after the film fades from memory, whether it's the exuberant "Oh Oh Megam Vanthatho" or the more haunting "Mandram Vandha", which many years later got repackaged as the signature tune for "Cheeni Kum".

The second is cinematographer PC Sreeram, who manages to give the house that CK and Divya live in the sense of a space inhabited by both, but never shared, as each misses the moment when the other opens up to the possibility of commonality.

Yes, "Mouna Ragam" is a mainstream film, and in that sense holds on to many of the prejudices of its time. But it holds to them loosely enough that, even three decades later, it offers up possibilities that you can think, imagine and ultimately enjoy. Considering that Mani Rathnam's last venture into relationship territory was the eminently forgettable "OK Kanmani" (though I enjoyed the effervescent Nithya Menen, that's just a fanboy aside), "Mouna Ragam" seems leagues ahead of its time. And for that, "Mouna Ragam" deserves its reputation as a classic.
