Redemption 104

The dance of the Mountain queen

Malar hugged the shadows of the buildings and then scaled up a wall and sat quietly on the roof when she heard people coming towards her and waited as the streets slowly emptied themselves and life in the city went on totally oblivious that she walked among them and it was the same during the light of the day when she went about her work as designated by her clan.

Malar was born deaf and dumb and yet she knew that many centuries ago a legendary mountain queen from their clan had hunted, fought and loved the god who had come from the light and in the end had risen into the endless sky.She too had been deaf and dumb but had regained her senses when she had met and fallen in love with their legend and guide,Kavin.

Though she had been born handicapped, her training had equipped her with certain skills and powers that soon overpowered her inability to hear or speak.

Their were some tests that every child had to go through when they were five years old and it applied to both boy and girl who were born in the suryavamsam clan.Since their community was very small it was rare that more than one child was born at a time.So it was that, only one child was sent away for their tests and subsequent training that qualified them to become a warrior of the light and the protector of all that is good and innocent.

As Malar landed on her feet she felt a pulse and knew that her people had engaged the darkness and were waging war and in the thick of battle. She sent a quick prayer to the skies for their safety and then reached the compound in which the police officers huge house was situated in and merging with the shadows reached the walls of the house and quickly scaled it and went to the terrace and from that vantage point and in the dark her eagle eyes scanned all around and watched as two vehicles neared the end of the street and then switched off their headlights.

Malar looked down and saw that the four constables who were supposed to be guarding the house quietly leave and knew that now she was the only one who stood between the old lady and the men who had come to kill her.

Malar went down on one knee, took a deep breath and then opened her senses and the world was different. She rose now not a deaf or dumb servant girl but a warrior of the light,a trained killer. She knew she had to handle this quietly and quickly and vanish into the darkness, back towards their hideout deep in the forest.

Malar stood and watched as four men approached the front gate and four more went around the compound to enter from the rear and two remained in the vehicles as they were the drivers.

Malar quickly calculated and knew that the four who had gone around the compound to enter from the back would take four or more minutes to do so and decided that it would be more than enough for her to finish with the first group who were just a minute away in the front.

Although the building was a two storeyed one,Malar had jumped on from higher distances and she stood and watched as the four slowly came into radius and when the moment came, she jumped.

Malar weighed nearly 55 kilos and when she jumped from nearly 5o ft height, her body accelerated tremendously that when her feet connected with the top of the skull of the lead person, the force broke the bones of the neck and sent it crushing and crashing into the mans body and even as her feet connected, her right arm swung and one more neck went flying and then she landed lightly on the ground and twirling her body launched herself at the remaining two whose brains and senses had still not absorbed what had happened and what was happening and before they could take their next breath,it was too late and that was the last breath they would ever take.

Malar took a deep breath and thanked her old master who had trained her well in various arts and sciences and who probably still lived on his own in the ashram that lay deep inside Sairandhri Vanam forest.

"Knowing the enemy enables you to take the offensive, knowing yourself enables you to stand on the defensive."
Sun Tzu, The Art of War

The Compound wall around the house was nearly ten feet tall and it had broken glass as a further deterrent for wannabe burglars. The four who now lay dead had entered scaling the gate but the four who were attempting to breach the wall from the rear had a more bitter time. But they had come prepared with a ladder and wrapping thick jute cloth around their palms started climbing the ladder one by one.Mistake.

The many banana trees around the compound were now a perfect place for hiding and malar watched as the first head popped up and then gingerly the man scaled the wall and jumped over the compound.Mistake.

Before the first man landed on his feet, malar sliced him wide open and then quickly dragged his body and hid it in the bushes and waited for the next cartoon to pop his head up and land into the compound.

second, third, fourth and then malar set off in the direction of the vehicles parked at the end of the street and after taking them out got into a vehicle and set off in the direction of the forest where jothi, her father and men were locked in a mortal combat with the forces of dark.

She had sent ten men to their final destination and it had all started and finished in about three to four minutes.

The queen of the mountain and her spirit was still strong and alive in the 20th century and malar raced towards jothi and then she felt the pain in her soul,a mortal pain and she screamed out his name " wait for me arul, wait and hold on to the light and don't give in to the darkness."

Redemption 105

"Bran thought about it. 'Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?'
'That is the only time a man can be brave,' his father told him."
George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

Police commissioner Rakesh menon gently placed his glass on the table and then tiredly buried his face in his palms and the three watched as his body sobbed in grief. Sharadha gently held him in her arms and tried to console him but the tears did not stop and Rudran looked at renuka who nodded and quietly they both got up and left the couple to their privacy and sadness.

Nearly ten minutes passed and then sharadha menon came and joined them in the balcony and all three stood watching the night passing through the city as it lulled its inhabitants to sleep, whispering to young and old alike ' sleep now and arise fresh to face a new day.'

Rudran looked at sharadha who smiled the saddest smile " you think you know everything about a person and yet they turn around and surprise you with their hidden facets and emotions.I honestly had no clue that my husband had so much hidden from me and frankly speaking if it had been anybody else that i am close with,i would have formed a different opinion. But rakesh is one of the most decent human beings i have had the pleasure of knowing and for him to hide so much from me, must surely have taken a terrible toll on his mind and yet he has borne all this by himself.Stupid man."

" Rudran,my instincts tell me that all that is happening is not just by sheer co-incidence and there must be a reason behind all this. His tears tell me that the worse is still to come in the story he has been telling us and i am very sure that this is the reason behind this sudden breakdown of his composure."

A few minutes later all of them went in and sat around rakesh menon who looked at them " sorry,i just got carried away with what i was telling you.But just wait for a few minutes and i will be done. But before i start once more,i am just going to go the bathroom."

A little while later rakesh picked up his glass and emptied it in one big gulp and placed it on the table with anger and looked at sharadha " last one dear, the last round for the climax of this tale i am telling you."

Rakesh menon looked at all three of them who were watching him with their complete attention and looked at the darkness that lay outside the window " the darkness that is here, over and around the city is so different from the darkness that one experiences when you are in the forest. The darkness there is like a cloak,a cloth that covers you, smothers you with its power and yet when you look up and see those thousands of shining stars, you realise that our own star is not very far away and that the sun is going to rise and bring its light along with it.

But the darkness that night in the forest was a mix of something far darker than the night itself and yet he fought, they fought and i live to tell you about their bravery and courage."

The divine light of Arul jothi

Rakesh watched in fear and in anxiety as Jothi stepped forward to face the remaining three giants and then he paused to stop at a body that across his path and kneeling down, whispered something and only later would rakesh realise that it was the body of Koothan their clan leader.

Jothi turned and looked at the ones who were still standing and they rushed forward and carried Koothan's body away and laid it under a tree among the other dead and dying of the Suryavamsam clan.

The wind carried a murmur,a growing whisper that picked up energy and soon it sound like thunder and they were the war cries of the clan and rakesh heard the word they were chanting for the first time and it sent shivers down his body and then he joined the clan members and roared " Azhagan,Azhagan."

Arul jothi stood tall at six feet and his lean, muscular body shimmered with sweat and in the dim light his every muscle moved like a snake writhing in anger.

But each of the giant was seven feet or more in height and all of them looked like small mountains as they slowly circled and moved forward towards the young man.

Rakesh watched in rapt attention and for the first time he realised how great poems of bravery and stories of legends were born and thought to himself that all that he had read in the epics about his childhood heroes such as Rama, krishna, arjun, karna and abhimanyu must have had their roots in some real incidents long ago.

The first giant rushed forward towards jothi who just stepped aside at the last moment and let the momentum take the attacker past him while his eyes were honed in on the other two. Then Jothi jumped back a few feet and brought back all three into his line of vision but yet he warily kept his back to rakesh for he must have known that he was the only one he could rely on at this vital moment for a hand gun was quicker and deadlier than bare fists.

Jothi with his eyes open and all his senses streaming out moved sideways, stepped back and weaved like a dancer and yet for the first few minutes never landed a single blow.

The three giants kept charging at Jothi but he kept weaving, dancing and diving his way out of their reach and this soon started taking a toll on his enemies who did not have the stamina or the discipline of their young foe.

Jothi parried blows with just a brush of his arms and any one of those blows could have easily brought down a horse to its knees and yet he managed to skillfully evade and deflect the attacks and with a smile danced on his toes mocking them and taunting them.

The giants stood breathing heavily and grunting like wild beasts and then Rajadurai roared at them " I don't think you bumbling pigs have descended from Moorkan your famous ancestor and i think you are just bas***ds born to unknown fathers. For if you really had the blood of moorkan in your veins then you would have torn this young pup to pieces rather than waste so much time and let him dance a ballet around you men.If you don't kill him soon,i am going to first put a bullet in all your three heads and then kill them all on my own and i am not worried about dying in the process."

While Rajadurai was yelling all kinds of obscenities at his men,Jothi stepped back to his men and they gave some water to drink and then he took the large sword that was handed to him.

Rakesh stepped closer to him " young man,i don't know who you and your people are and why you are here at this moment fighting my battle for me but you have gratitude and loyalty as long as there is breath in me.But please let me shoot these men down and let me arrest rajadurai and we will take it from there. Please you don't have to risk your life for my sake."

Jothi smiled " sir,If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle. That is a quote from the art of war by Sun Tzu."

Seeing the surprise on rakesh's face jothi smiled and then shrugged his shoulders " Sun Tzu was one among many other thinkers whose writings we all had to learn from the time our training began. But all that does not concern you for you have to excuse me as i have to go lay some monsters down before i really start sweating."

The three giants had picked up their own weapons and two had gone with swords like jothi hd done and the remaining one had picked up a long spear and the fight began in real earnest and this time the men who fought and the men who watched knew that this was going to the finish and that now it was life or death.

The bullet from a gun can reach out and kill from a far off distance and yet all men who do battle fear sharp instruments more than a bullet or a bomb. There is really something scary about a sharp, glittering knife for it can slice, stab and cut open flesh in a split second and in the hands of trained warrior then it becomes a warrior itself and a messenger of death.

Rakesh's jaw dropped as in the dim light jothi went about performing some strange and exotic moves and one of the clansmen with a proud smile whispered to rakesh " those moves are taught when one reaches the highest degree in martial arts and those moves of jothi are known only to him and another. They were taught by an old monk who travelled here many centuries ago. This particular art of sword play has been lost to the world and knowledge of it remains only with our clan as it was handed down to us by our leader and God,Azhagan."

Rakesh could not make sense of all this and wondered if he was dreaming for all this seemed so magical and truly incredible and yet he mustered enough courage and asked the man " who is the other person apart from jothi who knows all these techniques."

The man from suryavamsam smiled " oh you might just meet her before this night is over for she is the one who has been sent to protect your mother.By the way,she is the only one who has defeated jothi in the art of swordplay and not once but all the five times they have faced each other. But she knows as do we that jothi is never himself when he faces her for she is his light and his soul."

Rakesh did not know whether to laugh or cry while listening to these incredible warriors talk so casually about love and life while a fight to death was going on just a few feet away from them.

"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage." ? Lao Tzu

Rats,Cats and The Lion

Masamune also known as Goro Nyudo Masamune , Priest Goro Masamune, c.1264-1343 AD), is widely recognized as Japan's greatest swordsmith. He created swords and daggers, known in Japanese as tachi and tanto respectively, in the Soshu tradition. No exact dates are known for Masamune's life, and he has reached an almost legendary status. It is generally agreed that he made most of his swords in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, 1288-1328.

Jothi held up the sword to his face and closing his eyes whispered a prayer and rakesh watched in absolute attention and awe and then his eyes drank on the beauty of the sword. The steel slim and long, glittered and in the night of the forest which was lit by the cars headlights looked like a shining star and now it was held by a master who was in the prime of his health and who had been trained by the greatest minds who lived their lives as monks in hidden shadows but came with light and knowledge to teach, preach and train warriors who sought them out.

Rakesh looked at the strange and yet very familiar sword and he turned to the warrior who stood by him " that sword that jothi is carrying looks like those ones i have seen in some of the famous japanese movies about samurais."

The warrior nodded in agreement " good,i am glad you have seen a few of Akira Kurosawa's films for they are my favourites, especially those with the actor Toshiro mifune."

Rakesh took a deep breath " okay, but how is that a japanese Katana is in the hands of a tribal warrior in madurai. It is not making any sense to me and nothing which is going on is making sense to me for i feel i am in some dream and i am screaming and desperate to wake up from."

The warrior smiled " sir, there is much that you don't know and it is best that you remain in the dark and as of now now all matters concerning you lie in our leaders hands. But i will let you in one secret and that is only a few of our clan have ever received a katana made by the great Masamune. But i once saw the great master training an outsider,a child just five years old and he was gifted this famous sword. The boy stayed with us for just a few weeks and mastered everything,i am sure of that for i have never seen my master kneel before a student and offer anything, leave alone the great Masamune sword.I heard the whisper of his name and it was Dhanashekara pandyan.Malar and jothi got their swords when they were fifteen and sixteen but nobody has got it at the age of that boy from the city."

Rakesh slightly confused" but your leader lies dead under the tree so who is your new leader?"

The warrior pointed to jothi " he is our new leader and is now the father of this clan and after him there will be another.come now for jothi goes into battle and the eternal war between light and dark begins. Please stay silent until it is over for i have to remember everything and have to write it down."

Rakesh looked at him strangely and the warrior smiled " sadly,i am tasked to be the clans historian and what really hurts me the most is that i will be the last one to enter into battle, after, men, women and children and this hurts me so much when it is well known and accepted by everybody that my swordplay is better than jothi and malar."

Rakesh remained silent for a moment 'then why are you the historian?"

The warrior smiled brightly " That is because of my memory,my writing skills and my knowledge of all the spoken and written languages of this world and also because my master has deemed it so."

Rakesh looked at the scantily clad warrior with new respect and his mind boggled at the thought of this humble man being well versed in all the spoken languages of this planet.

Both fell silent and turned their full attention as jothi raised the sword and slowly left his left foot slide forward while he balanced on the toes of his right foot.

The snake that Rajadurai was slowly let his injured right hand fall to his side and left his other arm free and ready to do what he had planned.

The three giants had been bred and maintained by their king for one purpose and that was annihilation of his enemies. But for the first time in their lives they felt something called fear tickle and slowly grasp their soul. They looked at each other and then at Rajadurai who nodded and the fight started.

Like earlier they all charged Jothi one at a time and again like before he stepped aside, avoided, danced like a ballerina and weaved among them.

Rakesh knew something terrible was going to happen and then it happened and he saw everything in slow motion.

The three giants launched themselves at jothi in one movement thinking they could catch him unaware and unprepared but jothi was waiting for this moment himself. He let his arms fall to his side and then he waved his sword like a painter uses a brush on a canvas and the next second two of the giants fell with their heads separated form their torsos and one stood with both his arms cut off and slowly sank to the ground as his blood and life pumped out of him.

The four members of the suryavamsam clan roared " jothi, jothi, arul jothi."

In that moment rajadurai used his still able left hand and reached for his handgun that was tucked in behind the small of his back and drawing it out raised it to the air and fired it and kept firing it.

The loud fire of the handgun brought jothi, rakesh and the other members to total alert and they all turned towards rajadurai preparing to attack him.But the man dropped his gun and stood smiling and then from the darkness that surrounded them came a small army of armed men who quickly surrounded the men of light who stood in the dim light thrown by the cars headlights.

Rajadurai started laughing and then looked at jothi " Simply beautiful. It was much better than what i expected and i am happy that you did not disappoint me for i wanted to see with my own eyes how you men from the suryavamsam clan fought against such overwhelming odds.My own clans history is littered with references to Azhagan and a few other warriors who have gone against us but i must admit and confess that you warriors are more than a match for me and my men.I want to clap my hands as a spectator would do when they watch their hero fight against villians and defeat them but then i am the villian and the hero."

Rajadurai slowly walked to and fro before jothi, rakesh and his men " i knew that you and your people will not stop from meddling with my affairs and i was sure that you would come to rescue this stupid police officer tonight and you are here and right where i wanted you all,in the middle of my trap.Six of you and there are nearly sixty of my men surrounding you at this moment and all of them have their machine guns sighted on your heads.so,tonight will be a great victory for my people and soon we will hunt down the rest of your warriors and scatter their remains all over this forest and the legend of Azhagan and his ancestors will be dust in the wind."

Jothi smiled " Rajadurai,me and my warriors are ready to die but know this, that before your men even start firing, many of you will also die with us and you will be the first one for you only see six of us and have forgotten the seventh who has just arrived."

Rajadurai did not understand what jothi meant but the warrior next to rakesh whispered " malar is here and she is no mood to take prisoners but only their lives."

The dark of the forest roared with the noise of a horn and then a blood curdling yell filled the air and it was so scary that a few men of rajadurai's peed in their pants without even knowing that they had done so.

Rajadurai yelled to his men to stay calm but then the sound of a sword cutting through bodies and limbs was too much for his men and they started shuffling around in fear and rajadurai knew that he had to take control.

He grabbed a machine gun from the man nearest to him and turning to Jothi shot him twice in the stomach.

Rakesh heard the bullets hitting jothi's body and nearly felt the pain himself and rajadurai roared " the next bullets are going straight into your men's eyes and then we will come for you.Surrender right now or else i will start with the police officer."

The few seconds felt like a few minutes and then from the top of the tree malar landed into the circle and immediately went to jothi's side who still stood calmly even though two bullets had entered his body, mortally wounding him.

Jothi looked at malar and rakesh looked at malar and realised she was the same woman who had started working in their house.

Malar looked at rakesh ' your mother is okay sir and fast asleep but the people who came to attack her are not doing that well."

One of rajadurai's men rushed forward and whispered something and with shock and anger filling his face he turned towards Malar "you killed twenty of my men, twenty and that too in a matter of seconds.I wonder who the real killer is me or you people. But i am glad that you joined us for the party for i am ready to lose thousands more of my men if it means killing one of you mean dogs. Now all that remains is whether i kill you all here or kill you where your deaths might mean something to me and my dynasty."

Then suddenly jothi who was just about to collapse looked up into the sky and then looked at malar and his people and tears started pouring down his face.

" We are the lucky ones for just before our deaths we have been given the privilege of knowing that our leader has risen and soon he will be here."

Malar held jothi in her arms " jothi, what is it? what do you mean that our leader has risen? how and where did you know this? "

Jothi smiled and started coughing blood and yet he bravely spat the blood out and turned to Rajadurai " you laid a trap for us but then the light and spirit of these forest have laid a trap for you.get ready to meet him."

A loud roar shattered the silence of the forest and this was not the roar of man or even an army of men but the roar of the king of the forest and it was so loud that it shattered the glasses and lights of all the vehicles.

The whole forest was now covered under darkness and then two green lights flared and glowed in the darkness and rajadurai and his men stared at the two strange lights wondering what was happening.

The forest floor crackled as something large stepped on twigs and dry, fallen branches and made its way towards them.

Every crackle, every step of what was coming towards them from the darkness was like an arrow into the hearts of rajadurai and his men.

And the white full moon which had been smothered by dark clouds came out and everyone saw what stood before them.

It was a huge lion, black maned and its eyes glowed green. It opened its jaws wide and roared and a lucky few of rajadurai's men fainted in fear and thus escaped death.

Malar, jothi and the rest of the clan members fell to their knees and bowed low to the king of the jungle and now knew that their leader had risen for the lion always followed him when he was in their midst.

The lion looked deep into malar's eyes and she nodded and the next second launched herself at rajadurai and the lion followed as the dying jothi and his warriors joined the fight and rakesh dove in with his gun blazing.

The boy who went into the dark and came back with light.

Redemption 107

"The reason it hurts so much to separate is because our souls are connected. Maybe they always have been and will be. Maybe we've lived a thousand lives before this one and in each of them we've found each other. And maybe each time, we've been forced apart for the same reasons. That means that this goodbye is both a goodbye for the past ten thousand years and a prelude to what will come."? Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook

The arrival of the lion among them alerted them to the arrival of their leader for they knew that one always meant two and that when the spirit of Azhagan moved among them it meant he always came with a companion. This sign gave them a new motivation and the warriors of suryavamsam fought with new vigor and valor.

Every sweep of malar's blade cut a head or a limb for the person it belonged to and yet the tears poured down her face and rakesh saw the sorrow painted like a poem on her face and he knew why she cried. As Malar swept through the men of rajadurai, her senses were all keenly focused on the beat of her lovers heart for she heard every painful and yet final beat of jothis heart like a drum being banged next to her ears.

Unknown to them the coming of the lion had pumped a new kind of energy to the warriors of suryavamsam and this was what kept jothi alive, but it would not be for much longer.
Jothi fell to his knees and barely held himself with his sword and coughed huge amounts of blood and rakesh knew one of his lungs had been hit and knew that the end was coming too soon.

Seeing their leader on his knees had the opposite effect on his warriors and the fight was over and rajadurai and his men slipped away but with jothi dying malar and the others rushed to his side an for the moment forgot the fight and the dark of the night. The huge lion roared loud and long and the forest echoed with his challenge and he went around in a circle keeping watch over them.

Malar took jothi in her arms as the fight to stay alive was reaching its end and the cold of death slowly took over his body.Malar burst into uncontrollable sobs and she rained kisses all over his face. She slowly removed the wisps of hair that had fallen on his forehead and gently kissed his cold brow and jothis eyes flickered open and seeing malar, his lips managed a painful smile.

His eyes seemed to search for something and the lion which had been patrolling the shadows slowly padded towards him and lay in front of him and man and guardian whispered to each other through their souls.

Rakesh felt like Alice in wonderland for all that was happening seemed like some strange magical and mystical experience and yet it was happening before his very eyes and he was part of it.

He tried telling malar and the other warriors that maybe it was not too late to save jothi and if they rushed him to the hospital, maybe there was a chance to save him.

The warrior who was the historian of the clan shook his head " sir, jothi is already dead and what is hanging on is his final wish and now it is left to us to fulfill it."

He whispered to the others and in a matter of minutes they cut down two branches and with the vine they gathered soon made a stretcher and placed jothi in it.

Rakesh stood watching them and then when they lifted him to their shoulders,he rushed forward and took his place as did malar and off they went trotting into the depths and darkness of the forest.

The lion stayed about twenty feet behind them and kept a constant watch as the group trotted deeper and deeper into the forest. They must have jogged for about ten minutes when they met another larger group and rakesh understood that they were the remaining members of their clan. The new members took their places and placing the stretcher on their shoulders ran faster and soon rakesh saw that they had reached a small rocky mountain and without even stopping for a moment, the warriors ran up carrying their leader.

Rakesh was soon out of breath for the mountain was pretty steep and yet the members of the clan had already disappeared from his view.Panting and out of breath rakesh reached the summit and saw that the warriors had stopped and had placed the stretcher down on the rock, letting jothi's face the east.

Rakesh stood still not knowing what was going on and then the warrior historian smiled " jothi's soul is hanging by a slender thread, waiting for the first rays of the sun.It is from the east that our lord came and he came bearing light and he came from the rays of the sun."

Rakesh nodded though he did not understand what was being explained to him and put it down to strange rituals and practices that were the norm all over the world.

The warrior whispered softly " we are all children of the light for everything that is on this planet was born in the womb of the sun.All life is possible only because of the sun and its energy. From the darkness of our mothers womb we come into the light that erupts from the womb of our father, the mighty sun.In the end all our destinies are from the darkness and into light for that is the secret and that is the message of life.We all have light and darkness in us and what we do with each of it is what makes us good and bad.the light that is given to us if not just for us but to illuminate and lead others from darkness into their own light."

Rakesh went numb with sadness on hearing these words for it finally made sense.not knowing why he slowly went and knelt by jothi and taking his hand gently kissed it.

And then the sun blazed out from the horizon and the mountain was lit by the gold of the first rays of the sun. They stood in the fire of the sun and the lion still keeping watch over the forest roared and roared again.

Jothis eyes flickered open and for a second a strange light shone in his face and he slowly raised his hand to all his clan members who came and knelt all around him.

In one movement jothi plucked a strange looking object that had hung around his neck and offered it to Malar and rakesh knew that the position of the leader had now been passed on to the new queen, who would now take the fight forward.

then jothi reached for his sword that had been placed next to him and offered it to Rakesh menon and whispered " he is coming and you will know him and sense him when he arrives.give this to him and let him know that you are under our protection and that you are our ally in the eternal war.Thank you for standing by us and fighting with us.We are in your debt and when in need we will know and we will come and fight by your side."

jothi then looked at malar and everyone suddenly stood up and left them to their final moments that they would spend together.

Malar gently lifted jothis head and placing it on her lap bathed him with her tears and as the sun rose higher and higher, the spirit of Arul jothi left his body and joined the cosmos and malar kissed his dead lips one last time and the pain came and it came, wave after wave and she held him to her bosom and broke into uncontrollable sobs and rakesh felt his heart break for the pain was unbearable and he thought he was going to die.

I let it fall, my heart,
And as it fell you rose to claim it
It was dark and I was over
Until you kissed my lips and you saved me

My hands, they're strong
But my knees were far too weak,
To stand in your arms
Without falling to your feet

But I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
Well, it burned while I cried
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name!

The Life of an Indian Member of Parliament!
An open letter from our former MP Pritish Nandy.

I was an MP not very long ago. I loved those six years.

Everyone called me sir, not because of my age but because I was an MP.

And even though I never travelled anywhere by train during those years, I reveled in the fact that I could have gone anywhere I liked, on any train, first class with a bogey reserved for my family.

Whenever I flew, there were always people around to pick up my baggage, not because I was travelling business class but because I was an MP.

And yes, whenever I wrote to any Government officer to help someone in need, it was done. No, not because I was a journalist but because I was an MP.

The job had many perquisites, apart from the tax free wage of Rs 4,000. Then the wages were suddenly quadrupled to Rs 16,000, with office expenses of Rs 20,000 and a constituency allowance of Rs 20,000 thrown in. I could borrow interest free money to buy a car, get my petrol paid, make as many free phone calls as I wanted. My home came free. So did the furniture, the electricity, the water, the gardeners, the plants. There were also allowances to wash curtains and sofa covers and a rather funny allowance of Rs 1,000 per day to attend Parliament, which I always thought was an MP's job in the first place! And, oh yes, we also got Rs 1 Crore a year (now enhanced to Rs 2 Crore) to spend on our constituencies. More enterprising MPs enjoyed many more perquisites best left to your imagination. While I was embarrassed at being vastly overpaid for the job I was doing, they kept demanding more.

Today, out of 543 MPs in Lok Sabha, 315 are Crorepatis. That's 60%. 43 out of the 54 newly elected Rajya Sabha MPs are also millionaires. Their average declared assets are over Rs 25 Crore each. That's an awfully wealthy lot of people in whose hands we have vested our destiny.

The assets of your average Lok Sabha MP have grown from Rs 1.86 Crore in the last house to Rs 5.33 Crore. That's 200% more. And, as we all know, not all our MPs are known to always declare all their assets. Much of these exist in a colour not recognised by our tax laws. That's fine, I guess. Being an MP gives you certain immunities, not all of them meant to be discussed in a public forum.

If you think it pays to be in the ruling party, you are dead right: 7 out of 10 MPs from the Congress are Crorepatis. The BJP have 5. MPs from some of the smaller parties like SAD, TRS and JD (Secular) are all Crorepatis while the NCP, DMK, RLD, BSP, Shiv Sena, National Conference and Samajwadi Party have more Crorepatis than the 60% average.

Only the CPM and the Trinamool, the two Bengal based parties, don't field Crorepatis. The CPM has 1 out of 16 MPs; the Trinamool has 7 out of 19. This shows in the state-wise average. West Bengal and Kerala have few correlate MPs while Punjab and Delhi have only correlate MPs and Haryana narrowly misses out on this distinction with one MP, poor guy, who's not a correlate.

Do MPs become richer in office? Sure they do. Statistics show that the average assets of 304 MPs who contested in 2004 and then re-contested last year grew 300%. And, yes, we're only talking about declared assets here.

But then, we can't complain. We are the ones who vote for the rich. Over 33% of those with assets above Rs 5 Crore won the last elections while 99.5% of those with assets below Rs 10 lakhs lost! Apart from West Bengal and the North East, every other state voted for correlate MPs. Haryana grabbed first place with its average MP worth Rs 18 Crore. Andhra is not far behind at 16.

But no, this is not enough for our MPs. It's not enough that they are rich, infinitely richer than those who they represent, and every term makes them even richer. It's not enough that they openly perpetuate their families in power. It's not enough that all their vulgar indulgences and more are paid for by you and me through backbreaking taxes. It's not enough that the number of days they actually work in Parliament are barely 60 in a year.

The rest of the time goes in squabbling and ranting. Now they want a 500%pay hike and perquisites quadrupled. The Government, to buy peace, has already agreed to a 300% raise but that's not good enough for our MPs. They want more, much more.

And no, I'm not even mentioning that 150 MPs elected last year have criminal cases against them, with 73 serious, very serious cases ranging from rape to murder.

Do you really think these people deserve to earn 104 times what the average Indian does

Redemption 108

The first rays of the sun shot out like arrows over the dark depths of the bay of bengal and sped across the sea into the city of chennai and seconds later they poured light through the windows into the house of chennai city police commissioner rakesh menon.

He looked at the rays of light that spilled like gold into the house and remembered jothi dying in the arms of malar and murmured a prayer for his soul.

All four sat quietly, their eyes moist with sadness and their souls filled with the pain of malar and the heroic death of jothi and his touched their hearts even after so many decades.

Rudran looked at rakesh " sir, what happened to those elite commandos that your dad sent to help you from trivandrum. For if they had been there then probably things might have turned out differently."

Rakesh sighed sadly " they came but they came very late for in their haste to reach me and mother they took a rather difficult road through kutralam and the front wheel axle of their vehicle broke.By the time they reached my house everything was over and the proverbial shit hit the ceiling.the four constables who were placed as security for my house could not explain how there were ten bodies lying around in pieces. In the end the whole affair was hushed up and i was transferred to trivandrum and everything was buried, bodies and the whole sordid affair."

Renuka " what a story and if it had been someone else who had been telling me the same tale,i would have laughed them off saying that they were spinning a wild tale. But after hearing it from you i just wonder about how much is going on and how little we know of all that is going on this world."

Sharadha menon gently took her husbands hands and kissed them tenderly " you could have told me all this and reduced your burden by sharing it with me.I cannot even begin to imagine what a terrible toll it must have taken on your mind and body. But i am glad you finally spoke about it and we can now put all this behind us."

Rudran " sir,i have a few questions which have been eating away at my mind and that is why now,why talk about all this now and what about this other thing you mentioned about the dog Buddha which has become our companion."

Rakesh menon looked at rudran and then at the others and turned to face the light that was getting brighter and brighter as the minutes ticked away " that morning when i came back home i found a huge dog sitting guard outside my house. It was not an ordinary looking dog and it looked more like a lion. The army men who had been sent to help me and my mother thought it belonged to me and accepted it while they waited for my return. The fact that the dog was called Buddha was revealed to me by the very same Palam swamy as me and my mother were leaving madurai.Buddha came with us and stayed with us for a few weeks and then mysteriously disappeared. But i knew he had gone back to where ever he had come from and would come if the need arose."

Renuka " But that was thirty years ago and how is it possible that the very same dog could be here with us.And why choose me and Rudran for it does not make any sense at all."

Rakesh stood up " just stay where you are for a second and i will be right back for i have something to show you all and more importantly return something which rightfully belongs to the owner."

All three of them looked at each other and wondered what more surprises lay in store for them and then rakesh menon came back holding a long, slim package.

It was packed in thick, cardboard kind of material and taped shut.Rakesh softly asked sharadha to remove all the glasses from the table and also asked her to wipe the table clean.

After it was done,he placed the package on the clean table and using a small scissors slowly snipped away the tape that had been used to seal the package. Then he snipped away the cardboard material and lifted a long object wrapped in soft, blue satin kind of material.

The 14th century Masamune sword jumped out like a live creature and in the morning light it looked like the very sun itself whose rays it reflected.

Renuka " oh my god.Is this the sword. The sword that jothi used to kill all those giants in the forest that night."

Rakesh nodded " yes renuka, the very sword that was given to me by jothi and who requested me to hand it over to the one who is supposed to be its true owner."

Then to everyone's shock rakesh lifted the magnificent sword reverently with both his hands and offered it to Rudran, who recoiled in shock.

Rakesh " rudran, you asked me why now.It is because the time has come for the sword to be used again. It is because the killings have started again and it is because the mountain queen has requested you to come to the place where your journey began and where all answers to your questions lie in wait for your arrival."

Rudran tried to smile as if he found the situation funny and then became slightly irritated " sir,i think you are mistaken.I have no idea what you are talking about for i am in no way involved in all these strange matters."

" the old man told me you would say all these things and then he confided something to me which only you and him know about.i will tell you it later in private and then you decide for yourself."

Rudran shook his head " sir,it is okay for you to say what it is you want to tell me in private for renuka knows everything about me and now both of you have become part of our lives.so please, just go ahead and say what ever you have to say for it is not going to change my mind or convince me in anyway."

rakesh " are you really sure about that rudran?" and seeing him stay quiet rakesh spoke.

" Rise rudra.rise now and know that you are bhairava himself. He who you think has gone has not gone and lives in you.Hear his voice, hear his gentle whispers calling to you in love."

Hearing the words that rakesh had just spoken were like being hit with a sledge hammer and rudran's face reflected the shock and pain he felt hearing them.

Flashback-chapter 23

The boy sat slumped and leaning against the ancient rock pillar of the temple which was nearly a 1000 years old.He did not even notice or acknowledge the man who came and stood next to him.But the corner of his left eye caught the mans feet with overgrown nails. The boy slowly turned and looked up at the stranger and found a black man in a strange costume and holding a huge iron trishul. His whole body was covered with ashes and his hair was matted and hung in a mess touching the ground.

The man slowly crouched near the boy and laughed " so much pain and a wish to die so young.Yet you have so much to give,so much to do and so many more to protect."

The setting sun in the west dipped below and its orange blaze entered the temple premises and lit the deity of kala bhairavar. The angry light reflected of the god and fell on the boy and the strange looking man gazed into the boys eyes now blazing with fire.

" Rise rudra.rise now and know that you are bhairava himself. He who you think has gone has not gone and lives in you.Hear his voice, hear his gentle whispers calling to you in love."

The man whispered this and slowly took some ash and rubbed it on the boys forehead and quietly left.

We believe in miracles for they are true.we believe in magic because we have faith in the all knowing.

Rudran rose leaving behind the pain and desperation and slowly went and stood before the angry god.

" Why do i have to go on when he is no more. Why couldn't you have taken me instead. How will i go on?"

Bhairav spoke " i am gone but am i not still in your heart and soul.Don't you want to know why i went away or the circumstances in which we were torn apart.I will wait for you.come.come soon."

NOW

" those words were told to me when i was just a child and when i was supposed to have been close to death from the shock of losing bhairav,my twin brother. But who told you this for that was spoken in a temple near krishnagiri and so many years ago."

Rakesh felt sad for making rudran remember that which caused him so mcuh pain " i am sorry rudran but that is all i know and have been allowed to know. But Malar also told me that your mother is the key and she holds all the answers to your doubts and questions."

" sir,my mother is not doing too well. She died a little when bhairav went and a little more after my dad drank himself to death.Today, she is no position to answer any questions for her mind is too far gone and she seems to be living in the times when bhairav was still alive and keeps addressing me by his name."

Rudran looked at the sword that lay in its sheath and he slowly reached towards it and then everyone including rudran saw a kind of green light flare up from the sword and connect with his fingers and then the light grew stronger and stronger and rudran's body shook terribly as if he was being electrocuted and he collapsed to the the ground and fainted away.

"Many investigators feel uneasy stating in public that the origin of life is a mystery, even though behind closed doors they admit they are baffled." ? Paul Davies, The Fifth Miracle: The Search for the Origin and Meaning of Life

INSIDE

Everything was a blur and the last thing he remembered before drifting away was the face of Renuka hovering over him stricken with panic and grief. The darkness that took over him felt like an eternity but pleasantly familiar, like the trip you take back to your hometown after many years. But it soon passed and Rudran found himself waking up on a rock with walls all around him and the only exit was a narrow flight of stairs.

Rudran sat up wondering where he was and what was happening to him and yet his heart and mind were calm and in control.Instinctively he reached for his hand gun but it was not there and he could not remember where he had left it.He checked to see if he was hurt in anyway and finding himself perfectly all right quickly jumped to his feet and stood watching the narrow rocky steps running away from him.He could hear nothing and yet the air was cool and calm and with rock all around him Rudran ran up the stairs and after what felt running up a few floors came out of the stairs and stood on a flat rocky surface.

The place looked like it was on top of a mountain and Rudran slowly walked towards the center to get a better view as to where he was.Looking up he saw the night sky was shining with thousands of stars and it was one of the most beautiful things he had ever seen.It was just him,the darkness and the night sky which was brimming with stars and all Rudran could think was that Bhairav and Renu were missing this awesome spectacle.

Rudran remembered the night sky being just as beautiful during those times he had spent in the gulf and in the mountains of Afghanistan.

He whispered " why does it all seem so familiar to me and why do i feel that all this is part of me as if i have been here before."

He wondered why the wind was not howling past him at this great height as it is in its nature to do so and though the night sky was beautiful,Rudran found the stars and their constellations vague and new.Navigation by using star constellations is a vital piece of knowledge and if the Gps and compass are broken then the only way to get back to the safety of one's base was using the stars to guide them and every soldier worth his salt knew it and learnt it.

Then though he did not hear the person's arrival towards him, rudran sensed him and quickly turned towards the form and found a little boy was walking towards him.

Rudran froze and a strange and familiar pain gripped his soul and his lips uttered " Bhairav."

Bhairav smiled and came closer and closer and rudran not able to control the pain and joy which overwhelmed him fell to his knees and sat watching his brother as he came and stood before him. Both brothers stared at each other and then rudran gently embraced him and held him for a long time not wanting to let go for he was scared that he might not see him again.

Then rudran gently looked at bhairav " you are not real, are you."

Bhairav shook his head " rudy, you know i am not."

" then why are you here and what is this strange place and why does the night sky look so different from the one i remember it as?"

Bhairav " it is all you rudy and it is all in your head. This is your world, your thoughts and your brother. So,tell me why do you think all this is happening right now?"

Rudran smiled " god,you sound like that nerdy psychiatrist dr.Otto hauptman from mossad who kept turning all my questions back to me."

Bhairav touched rudran with his tiny hands and slowly started to fade into the darkness and rudran screamed " no,don't go for i dont be without you anymore.let us stay here in this darkness forever, together."

" no,rudra, you have to continue your journey and go on without me.But don't worry for i am always here, right here in your soul." Bhairav touched rudran's face and vanished into th darkness.

Rudran sat in the darkness with just the strange sky for company and he screamed " i am alone,i am all alone."

Then something moved in the darkness and came towards him and the blood in his veins froze for a second for it was a huge lion and it came and stood before him and looked at him with a soft and gentle expression.

The lion opened its mouth and green light sprang from its jaws and is spoke " my lord, how could you be alone when you have so much love and so many people rooting for you. There is so much more to be done and the danger that threatens this whole world is nearing completion and soon it will move and if it is not stopped then it will be too little,to late and nothing can save this world."

Rudran " why me,why do i have to face this danger and fight it."

The lion roared " for right now, there is only you between the dark and the light. But it is up to you my lord for you have to choose the path and you have to choose it voluntarily."

Rudran screamed " choose,choose what?"

The lion smiled, turned and vanished into the darkness leaving rudran alone in the darkness once more.

It felt like an eternity and rudran wanted to lie down and fall asleep staring into the sky and its dark depths, when a light shimmered and a form appeared in the darkness and started walking to him, boldly and majestically.

Rudran calmly looked at this new person wondering who it could be this time and what advise they had for him.

The shimmering form soon revealed itself as a tall man dressed in a simple white cloth around his waist and another piece of pure white cloth thrown across his body.He had silver anklets on his feet and held a huge spear in his right arm and he walked like a king.

Rudran sat on his knees watching him approach and soon the man came and stood before him, looking down at him with eyes full of love and understanding.

" rise warrior of the light for it is time you really rose from the darkness that you have been in.Rise from the fog that covered your birth and rise and accept your destiny."

Rudran looked at him " destiny.what has that got to do with anything that has been going on?"

The man looked at him " why was the sword offered to you and why did its fire reach out to you and why are you dreaming all of this, including me?"

Rudran looked at him expectantly " why, tell me why am i dreaming all this?"

The man smiled " you know it but you have to really rise now and go back to the beginning, back to where it all started for you and for your people.Go back to your mother and really talk to her."

Rudran shook his head sadly and the tears came pouring out " my mother is not well and her memory is more or less gone and she is now too frail and weak to remember anything."

The man smiled " warrior, you have so much light in you and yet you lie in darkness.Rise now and seek Redemption and hear the call of your destiny.Remember, back to the very beginning."

Turning away the man started to walk away and rudran screamed " wait, you didn't tell me who you are or where i have met you before this."

The man stopped and then turning to face rudran smiled " I am the boy who went into the dark and came back with light.come, seek me in madurai among the stars in the mountains and know your destiny."

"The learned alone are said to have eyes.
The ignorant have merely two disgraceful sores called eyes"

OUTSIDE

Renuka tried holding rudran as he collapsed to the ground in a dead faint but he was too heavy for her and only with rakesh and sharadha helping her,did they lower him gently to the carpet and sat around watching him.

Renuka looked at rakesh and sharadha " was i imagining it or did some kind of a green fire jump out from the sword and enter rudran's body.what do we do now? shouldn't we call for an ambulance or just carry him to the nearest hospital.sir,i am really scared for i don't want anything to happen to him. Please do something."

" It is okay renu and trust me rudran is no danger. This is something i was warned about and a process that he has to go through by himself.I was told that he is going to be woken up and that he will rise a different person. But i have to admit that i am not sure what they meant and all this i beyond my understanding as it is beyond yours.Let us wait for a few minutes and then if he is still unconscious, maybe we will call an ambulance."

Suddenly rudran's body shuddered a couple of times and all of them saw tears streaming down his face and renuka could not take it anymore and she looked at rakesh and sharadha, who nodded and quietly got up and left her alone with rudran.

Renuka gently took rudrans head and placed it on her lap and ruffled his short hair with her fingers and wiping his tears away " you are the light of my life.you are the reason that i am still alive and still breathing.I don't know if you can hear me but i want you to know that i am here with you and am not leaving your side until you come back."

She held his face close to her eyes and both their tears mixed, hugged and streamed down and formed a stain on the carpet.

Rudran's eyes flickered open and he became fully alert the next instant and yet he lay in the comfort of her lap and arms and both looked at each other.

" How long has it been since i fainted away?"

Renu smiled happily " not very long, maybe about ten to fifteen minutes.but not more than that."

Rudran " are you okay.where are mr.rakesh and mrs.rakesh?"

" I am perfectly okay and the million dollar question is how are you doing and what the heck happened. You fainted and then your body shuddered violently and then there were tears in your eyes. That was the most painful thing that i have ever seen and it made me so sad that i couldnt be inside your mind trying to comfort you when you needed me."

Rudran gently touched her cheek and renu kissed him and they stayed lost in their lips and breath for a long time.

" I have to go see my mother and try talking to her for somewhere deep inside her brain lies answers to some of my questions and questions that have been asked of me."

" what happened rudran? where did you go and what was that green kind of light that flared from the sword into your body.Don't you think it is better if we go to a hospital and get a check up done?"

Rudran smiled and shook his head " i am perfectly all right.Come let us leave for it is nearly 6.30 a.m in the morning and your parents must be worried sick about you."

Just then mrs.sharadha menon came out and told them that rakesh had fallen asleep and it was better not to wake him up.

Rudran apologised for causing them to panic when he had fainted away. But sharadha gently clasped his arm " son,i am not sure about what is going on and my mind is still reeling from my husbands story. But one thing i am sure of is that a great burden has been lifted from his shoulders and i am happy for that and it is thanks to you that it has all happened."

Saying bye to sharadha rudran and renuka were about to leave, when renu requested rudran not to drive himself back home and told him she would drop him home in her dads car.Accepting that it was safer and fearing another blackout, rudran and renuka got into her car and drove into the morning light that the sun cast over the city of chennai.

It's so dark right now, I can't see any light around me.That's because the light is coming from you. You can't see it but everyone else can." Lang Leav, Love & Misadventure

There is an old fable about a puppy that was vigorously chasing its tail. An old dog saw him and asked, "Why are you chasing your tail so?"

The puppy answered, "I have mastered philosophy. I have solved the problems of our universe, which no dog before me has solved correctly. I have learned that the best thing for a dog is contentment and happiness. I have further discovered that contentment lies within my tail. Therefore, I am chasing it; and when I catch it, I shall have happiness!"

The old dog just nodded his wrinkled head, then replied, "My son, I, too, have paid attention to the problems of our universe. In my own weak way, I have formed some opinions. Like you, I have judged that contentment and happiness are fine things for a dog and that, indeed, happiness lies within my tail. But I have also noticed that when I chase it, it keeps running from me; but when I simply go about my business, it follows after me."
