A Tamil saying goes on that "Thai Piranthal Vali Pirakkum" meaning that when the month of Thai dawns there will be way of love, peace, harmony, prosperity, joyness in everyone's life. The month of Thai (starting on January 14 or 15) is considered very auspicious. Young people eagerly await Thai, for it promises wedlock for them. Others too, expectantly wait for the arrival of this month for celebrating some other happy occasions

Pongalooooo Pongal

Today is not only Pongal day but also Tamil new year day. Thai 1 has been declared as theTamil new year by Tamilnadu Government, a year back. According to ancient Tamil tradition, Thai 1 marks the birth of new year and not April 14 or Chiththirai 1.

One more very very very important thing is, Pongal is NOT AT ALL a religious festival - a festival of hindus. It is the festival of Tamils celebrated irrespective of religion. One of my colleagues who is a muslim also celebrates Pongal today. I know many christians who cook Pongal in the church and offer it to God. Pongal is basically a thanks giving festival dedicated to Sun, rain and cattle. All the four days of Pongal evoke a jubilant mood in the people irrespective of religion.

Anaivarukkum en idhayam kanindha Thamizh puththaandu mattrum Pongal Thirunaal Vaazhthukkal.
