Prologue
Christmas night... mere these words erupt joy in many hearts. Children wait for their Santa to secretly deliver their most awaited gifts. The lit Christmas trees shine bright in the houses. Carols are sung loud. Sweets are savoured and everyone's faces gleam in bliss.
There were two persons who stood facing each other the same night. There were sounds of bursting crackers, sparkles in the sky and merry tunes in the background. The boy smiled wide and bent in front of the girl pulling out a red rose. The girl happily took the offered rose and the boy stood up. A rocket that just shot up behind their backs expressed the shine in the sky their faces bore.
No words were spoken. The contentment on their faces could easily be measured by the smiles they exchanged. Without wasting any time the boy neared the girl and embraced her. She too hugged him tight as waters drew out of her eyes.
The vision I had began to swim in front of me as tears welled up and coursed down my cheeks. I stood faraway the duo. Everything was same five years ago... Christmas night, glowing Christmas trees, exploding crackers, a red rose, a proposal, an illuminated sky ,and two hearts in a silent promise of eternal love.
Everything was exactly same... even the guy...Kabir.
My eyes flickered open and I watched the duo walking away side-hugging each other.
Wiping tears off my face, I gazed at the sparkling sky with uneven breaths. Why I was presented the same thing before me which happened six years back... with just a change that the girl wasn't me.
Thousand feelings, questions and beliefs rummaged my mind. I started walking tightlipped not letting a word slip out. My thoughts were heavy in my head, too many of them... disconnected...floating...halting me at half way... weighing me down.
There I was crying my heart out but I could not produce a sound. I, Nisha, who people regarded as brave, noble, self-sacrificing, virtuous...was dead. I was Nisha Gangwal Rathore.
