"Nisha Gangwal, she may look like an innocent kind of angel, but is maha chalu...she is my classmate... and I didn't realize her existence until the end of a month of June."
"Woh tumhari classmate hai, and you didn't realize? Agreed ki ab tum naye school mein ho... but that doesn't mean that you didn't recognize that?" Aman Di asked me, rolling her eyes.
"Hear me out at least... So, yes, I didn't realize that she was my classmate, and how can you expect me to remember the names and faces of all 40 students?" I asked her.
I was in 12 standard and had changed my school this year.
"Fine, go ahead..." She said.
"So yeah, I never really did realize that she was in my class, unless on 29 June, that was the date I think..." I said doubtfully.
"Boys are so bad at remembering days..."Di said and sighed. I rolled my eyes.
"We were playing basketball and she was sitting there with her friends. I threw the ball in the air, hoping that I would score a basket, but it ended up hitting her hand. The other boys chose to ignore that, but for some reason, I just couldn't. I looked at her, as she massaged her hand, and then at her friend, who was busy tending to it. I decided to say sorry and went a bit closer to her.
"You should have fired them..." Another friend of her spoke.
"Ignore yaar..."She said and brushed it off.
"It's hurting too much naa... You had injured you hand yesterday, and now this..." The friend who was tending to her hand said.
"Chill Dolly, I'll be fine...Listen, I need to complete my physics book, so I'll catch you guys later?" She smiled and walked off to class. I too backed off and joined my friends
"You are such an..." Di stopped midway and looked at me in anger.
"I am sorry...I shouldn't have done that then..."
Di rolled her eyes.
"During the interval, she was with her other friends. Dolly isn't in our class, thankfully, warna har din meri class le leti. I was returning to the class from the library when I banged into Dolly, her friend.
"You threw the ball, didn't you?" She asked angrily
I looked at her, baffled. A part of me wanted to lie, but I looked at Nisha, who was sitting on the last bench, massaging her arm, now and again and nodded.
"Just because I ignored it, doesn't mean I'll forget this..."Dolly said sharply and walked to Nisha.
I looked at her retreating figure.
"Kabir, help us with the pin-up board." The Girl's Class representative, Kirti, called out to me. I nodded and joined her, but my attention was on Nisha.
For some reason Di, I really can't express why she was just attracting my attention. I focused my attention on Dolly-Nisha's conversation.
"What were you talking to him?" Nisha asked as she looked up at me. I pretended I was playing with the thumb pin.
"Nothing, I thought I saw him somewhere, isiliye bas puch rahi thi..."
"Jhoot mat bolo..."
"Fine, he was the one who threw the ball at you in the morning..."
"Dolly, you don't have to do this..."
"you know I can't see you in pain..."
Nisha looked at her and sighed.
"You hand is fine right?"
"Yeah..." She nodded and smiled.
"Take care..." Dolly said as the bell rang and patted her cheek. Nisha smiled gently as she made her way out of the class.
"So she chose to ignore whatever you did?" Di asked me and I nodded.
"She shouldn't have..." Di retorted jokingly and I threw a sharp glare at her.
"maine usse abhi tak sorry nahi bola...," I said and earned a slap from her.
"That's on her behalf." She said.
"That's how it started Di...her presence started affecting me. She always occupied the last bench and occupied the second in the last row. I had to turn and look at her, at least once in a lecture, and I really didn't know why I did it then...initially she never really noticed this, but slowly, she did. She realized that someone was looking at her, and she would look directly at me. Fearing that she might question me, I would ignore her. That was my biggest mistake. She felt angry, or maybe inferior. Then she too started avoiding me.
I mean, if we had an eye contact, she would look away, if we both are walking in the opposite direction and look at each other; she would behave as if she didn't know me... She never spoke to me; her friend, Jwala, conveyed the message and this started hurting me.
I wanted her to talk to me, but she never did so... I couldn't understand why? All her other friends in our class spoke to me, but she didn't. Being the Boy's Class Representative, I decided to make a chat group of the class on WhatsApp, but to my disappointment, she didn't use WhatsApp.
I can't tell you Di, uss waqt itna jyaada upset ho gaya tha main... par kyun, yeh samajh hi nahi aa raha tha... And then, the worst happened, she didn't come to school for three days... Those three days were like hell for me... Main baat-baat pe upset ho jaata tha, gussa ho jaata tha... and when she came back, I felt so relieved.
"Kyun nahi aayi thi?" Jwala had asked her.
Before replying, she sneezed. Looking at her red nose, I had laughed then Di, probably, laughed wholeheartedly in those three days.
