Chapter 10: Breaking walls

(Part One)

Nisha came home after a hectic day in Lakshya Academy. She just nibbled a little bit of food on Lakshmi's insisting and then said she's too tired and went to her room.

She plugged in earphones and lay on bed listening to music and thinking about the day.

According to Neil's plan, they spent most of the time around Viraj. She could feel that Viraj was getting angry. And frankly, she couldn't blame him, Neil was going overboard in trying to annoy him.

She had thought Viraj was happy, everything was good in his life, with that thought she had been trying to move on. However the past week had proved it was not the case. Something was really bothering Viraj, she could see the pain in his eyes. And the worst thing was that he was shutting everyone out, and seeing him like this was painful to her too.

She listened to the track that was playing...

If I'm somewhere else it doesn't mean that I don't see,

A lone tear escaped Nisha's eyes and traced through her cheeks.
She just hoped Neil's stupid plan would work somehow.

Viraj didn't know what they were trying to do. Nisha and Neil had been following him around throughout the day, coming with some silly excuse or another. And now even after the office hours when Nisha had thankfully left, Neil didn't budge, he was following Viraj like a shadow. Why were they so hell bent on torturing him?

"Neil, I can do this work on my own, you can leave for the day" said Viraj.

Neil had been talking about this and that throughout the day, Viraj had kept quiet and had continued ignoring Neil after he had tried every measure to get rid of him and had failed.

"Oh! You finally realized I'm here! That's a good sign!" chirped Neil happily, "How can I leave the work on my boss and leave! I'm not going anywhere!"

Viraj went back to ignoring him and Neil continued his blabbering.

"... so finally Dolly di is happy that she and Sumit are shifting to Mumbai! All that saas-bahu kich kich would have gotten to his head! I think it's good in a way that Sumit didn't opt for posting to Bengaluru in the first place when they got married, because that would have been too far from Jaipur and Dolly di cannot stay apart from her cousins for long!"

"You know I met my school friend Sneha the other day, I saw her blushing slightly when I took Saurav's name... I sensed there was something over there, so I did a little bit of match making and finally sent Sneha and Saurav on their first date together... He has been flying since then!"

"Did I tell you about Jwala's results? She topped again! Isn't that just great? And Bunty did well too!"

Neil didn't know how long he could keep up the enthusiasm and keep speaking about random things to a non-reacting Viraj.
Viraj didn't know how long he could tolerate being in the presence of the person who had taken his place in the life of the woman he loved the most, Neil's over-enthusiasm in annoying him was definitely not helping him control his anger...

(Part two)

Neil was going on and on. "... so finally dadaji agreed and I can't believe it myself, but I'm getting married in two months! You'll ofcourse be the special guest in our wedding, I owe you one for helping her out in her toughest time..."

Viraj froze. Married? They were getting married! Viraj couldn't take it any longer, he reached for the door to leave his cabin.

"And Suku said if everyone keeps getting married at this pace, soon he'll have to finalize on one of his girlfriends... Hey Sir! Where are you going?!" Neil exclaimed on seeing Viraj trying to leave and ran to block the door.

Viraj's face was filled with agony, he could barely speak "What's your problem Neil? Get out of my way!"

"I won't! You're not going anywhere until you tell me what your problem is! What is it that is disturbing you so much and making you behave in such an aloof manner?" Neil was adamant.

"I don't want to talk to you about anything Neil, get the hell out of here!" Viraj was furious.

"I already told you I won't! You don't care how much your behaviour is worrying the people who care for you! Nisha has always been there for you, you don't care how your behaviour is affecting her! You are stubborn and just think about yourself!" Neil was losing his temper too.

"O really? Now I am being termed selfish! I don't care about her? I don't care about her happiness? You think it's easy for me to see you both together, see her every day knowing that she'll never be a part of my life? I love her Neil, I love her!" Viraj spat is all out, he couldn't take it anymore.

"What?!!" exclaimed Neil.

"When I overheard Saurav speaking to you at the party about how her heart was broken and that your love will mend it, I felt a pang, I didn't know what I felt for her apart from deep respect and admiration, my mind was all over the place, Aarti had been so understanding, I had fallen in love with the only person who I felt understood me" Viraj said.

Neil looked shocked, Viraj continued. Now that he had started speaking he wanted to let it all out. He had kept quiet for too long.

"Then I overheard Nisha and Saurav's conversation and got to know that Nisha was Aarti! And you had already proposed her by then, how could I ruin it for you people?... and before that when I was helping you with that date happily thinking I know her well I was proved wrong! I didn't even know her preferences, you knew her better! I broke her heart when she loved me, I don't even deserve her" Viraj was distraught.

Neil stood there speechless.

Then he said calmly "Sir you are wrong about one thing... You do know about Nisha's likes and dislikes, ofcourse she likes yellow colour... It is Kirti who likes lavender"

Viraj looked up, confused. What was Neil talking about!

Neil saw that Viraj was nonplussed and burst out laughing.

Viraj thought Neil had gone crazy.

"I'm sorry but this is too funny" Niel continued laughing and sat down on the sofa.

"Sir, I think you should seriously stop overhearing parts of conversations and coming to conclusions! I love Nisha but as my best friend, It is Kirti who I am in love with" Neil said through his laughter.

Seeing the incredulous look on Viraj's face Neil sighed and explained as if Viraj was a little kid not able to understand the simplest thing.

"I always had a thing for Kirti, I got to know she had fallen for some guy named Ritesh and they got engaged. I can understand what you must have felt these days because I experienced the same thing back then... Then I came to know that Ritesh turned out to be a fraud and broke her heart, Nisha told me how you had helped them get rid of him and somehow I felt obliged to you. When I came here Saurav encouraged me to confess my love before I missed out on it again. Nish helped me get the date fixed with Kirti. They both are the best BFFs one could ever hope for, they've have always stood by me... And coming to you, if you feel that Nisha doesn't care for you anymore just try and remember how visibly upset she's been since you started behaving all wierd" said Neil.

Saying that Viraj was surprised would be an understatement. He wanted to jump with happiness, run to Nisha and tell her how much he loved her, he wanted to hug Neil and thank him, but he settled for sitting beside Neil on the sofa and taking a deep breath.

Neil smirked. He couldn't believe that such a simple thing had led to so much confusion and suffering.
"So, what are you planning to do now that all the things are clear?" he asked Viraj.

Viraj looked at him and smiled.

P.S. If anyone is interested the song that Nisha was listening to earlier in this chapter is "Concrete Angel" Acoustic version by Christina Novelli, I feel it sort of suits Nisha and Viraj's situation, atleast in my FF 😃
