"Okay... When you were in Delhi..." Before Abhilash could start saying anything, the doorbell rang loudly. Abhilash looked to the door, but Zain didn't even flinch, his eyes stayed trained on Abhilash impatiently waiting for him to finish.
"When I was in Delhi what?!" He yelled out in frustration, slamming his fist on his thigh.
"Zain... the door..." Abhilash pointed to the door warily. Zain shook his head violently, his eyes were bloodshot and watering ,refusing to move from that seat until he knew what had happened with his Adi. "Zain. I promise, she'll be fine. She'll be completely fine. Let me open the door..."
Zain finally gave up his resolve, nodding reluctantly. Abhilash walked over and clicked it open, as Zain just sighed painfully, his head falling in to his hands in despair.
"Uncle ji, auntie ji! Oh wow ... I'm so sorry... it's all messy in here... we weren't expecting anybody..." Abhilash looks disorientated as he slowly opens the door and indicated for them to come in, Zain looked up in confusion, rubbing his eyes before staring at the door in question.
Suddenly he felt something on his leg.
"Chachu! Chachuuu! " He looked down to see Inaaya hugging his leg tightly, clutching to it, and pressing her soft cheek against the fabric of his jeans which she tugs. He couldn't help but let a tiny smile appear on his face as she clambers on to his lap, and holds out her hands as if wordlessly asking him to take her in to his arms. He immediately complies like the spoiling chachu he was, cradling her in his arms, smiling down at her.
"Ammi... papa... aap log... ab yaha?" Zain is about to stand up to greet them but his dad shakes his head, signalling that there was no need to disturb Inaaya on his lap. His heart warms seeing his family infront of him, almost causing him to forget the worry nagging him constantly.
His mother kneeled infront of the sofa in front of him, cuping his cheek tenderly. There was no way the red raw pain in his eyes and the dried tears on his cheeks could be ignored by a mother, she frowned in worry as she scrubbed at his face with her dupatta, "Beta tum teek ho na? "
"Haan of course Ammi..." Zain tried to smile convincingly, tears threatened to fall from him eyes, his mother's familiar comfort close to bringing his walls tumbling down.
"Are you sure?" His mother enquired again, she knew, she could see that something was troubling him.
"Yes Ammi, bilkhul... " He placed his hand over hers that rested on his face and squeezed it gently, he hated seeing his mother getting worried. He smiles that charming smile of his, ignoring the sinking feeling in his stomach.
"Uncle ji, Auntie ji... mein aap logo ke liye chai bana du? " Abilash asked in polite concern, walking toward the kitchen.
"Kya formality dikha rahi hu baccha?!" Ammi called out, laughing incontrollably at Abhi's rigid politeness. " Kya hum logo ko tumhe nahi jante kya? When is the last time you have entered a kitchen? Come sit here, we don't want anything..."
Abhi smiled sheepishly, ruffling Inaaya's hair and asking her sweetly, "Par Inaaya ko? Inaaya ko juice chaiyye?"
She nodded and so Abhi made his way to the kitchen, Inaaya sleepily leaned on Zain's chest, yawning, making him chuckle at her affectionately as he smoothed out her hair, "Chachu... chachi kaha hai? Mujhe chachi ko milna hai..."
Zain froze, and had to drag a smile on to his face, pecking her cheek, "Wo ab sau rahi hai Inaayu..."
"Aditi beta bhi teek hai na ?" His dad enquired with a fond softness in his eyes,
Zain's eyes immediately turned to Abhilash who got hit with guilt seeing the hurt in his eyes. Zain nodded numbly.
"Ammi?! Papa?!" Zain looked to the door of his bedroom hearing an adorable child-like sleepy voice from the corridor, she stood there pouting rubbing her tired eyes. His heart ached at her cuteness. "Aap sab yaha?"
She walked, half asleep, to touch his father's feet who happily blessed her, he wasn't always a visibly affectionate man but Aditi has a soft spot in all their hearts. His mother enveloped her in a hug and kissed her hair, and tears welled up in Aditi's eyes, she had been needing a mother right now, and his mother was no different to hers.
She groaned as she walked, her head was really heavy and there was this weird unexplained pounding in her ear drums, "Ammi, Papa? Mein chai bana lu?"
"You don't do it, you're sleepy. You go back to bed..."Zain placed a subtle hand on her shoulder, examining her for any injuries or anything different about her, with very precautious care .
"Nahi Zain.. Mein karlunga... I wan't to do it..." She smiled sweetly, and her parents were just further endeared by her innocent charm. Inaaya came sprinting to her, jumping up and down with her hands held out for her Adi chachi to lift her this time,
"Aww inaayu baby..." She cooed, moving to lift her in to her arms, but zain frowned seeing the tiredness and weakness of her limbs.
"Inaayu... yaha aao na, mere paas..." Zain beckoned her towards him, his eyes transfixed on Aditi as if she was in immediate danger, checking on her constantly. The family admired Zain's relentless overprotectiveness of Aditi. " Chachi bohot thag gayi hai,ab usse pareshaan mat karna.."
"Don't be silly... baby chachi ki paas aao... When would I get tired of seeing my precious little girl?" She lifted Inaaya in to her arms, cradling her carefully. Inaaya sighed in content as she wrapped her legs around Aditi's waist and buried her head in to the nook of her neck. "Are you tired baby?"
Inaaya nodded slowly, snuggling further in to Aditi, she frowned caressing her hair until her breathing settled slightly. "Aw ab bohot travel ke hogi... wo bhi itni dher raat mein... she must be so sleepy..."
Aditi carried her in to the guest bedroom and tucked her in to the blanket, she perched beside her on the bed, watching over her until she fell asleep. Zain's heart wrenched, she was so exhausted yet she stayed unmoving, leaning awkwardly on to the headrest until she was sure that Inaaya was asleep. How could god let something happen to someone so pure and beautiful?
She got up and disappeared in to the kitchen before Zain could object, Abhilash continued to speak to his parents animatedly, "Bhaiyya aur bhabi nahi aayi?"
"Oh no, they are due in hospital soon as she is expecting the baby in a few days... We thought we would stay here till then, we wanted to distract Inaaya a little, they haven't been able to give as much attention recently, and she began constantly asking for her chachu and chachi..." His mother explained, Zain smiled affectionately looking at Aditi again, almost in disbelief that she actually existed in his life, someone who loved his family like her own.
"And what about her abhi uncle?" Abhi provoked playfully, earning a hit on the top of his head from zain's dad, who laughed heartily.
"And of course her Abhi uncle, her favourite..." Abhi nodded proudly, and Aditi's melodious laughter drifted through the door as she brought in cups of tea for everybody.
"Oh Aditi , baccha, this wasn't necessary-"
"Nahi Ammi, aise mat kahiye... you know I love to do such things for you both..." She hands everyone a cup of tea, and his parents observe her admiringly, besotted by her simplicity and loving nature.
As she passes a cup to Zain, his fingers linger on hers causing that immediate rosy blush to heat her face, He stroked his thumb over her knuckles, staring at her intently, as she tried to squirm away, hissing under her breath, "Zain stop it... just take it..."
"Mere paas bet ja na Adi..." He pouted adorably, she shook her head feeling her resolve melt because of those puppy dog eyes of his.
"Kahaan? Idiot..." Her eyes widened in shock as he indicated towards his lap, she gasped hitting him subtly on the chest.
"Ammi, papa ki saamne? Pagal..."
His parents had amused looks on their faces as they saw how smitten he was with Aditi, their hushed whispers, and the way he kept on tugging at her hand and she kept resisting him, "Aditi beta, you don't have to be shy around us, act just as you would have done if we weren't here ..."
"ji Ammi? What do you m-" She got flustered, hoping they all hadn't seen Zain pestering her like a small needy child.
"I mean beta, you sit with him. We can see that's what you both want. Just behave exactly as you do when we aren't here to disturb you-" She smiles knowingly, Aditi's blush goes so dark she's almost purple, she chews her lip nervously.
"No Ammi, how could you be disturbing us-"
Zain yanked her by the arm to fall in to the chair beside him, getting impatient without having him near her. She stares at him angrily , crossing her arms over her chest and shoving away from. Zain leaned in to her, nestling her in to his side as he reached down to her ear. His husky voice lowered to a whisper sensually, "Why are you getting annoyed... I haven't showed them what I would actually do if no one was here-"
A tingle went down her spine as she saw his eyes darkening with a naughty intention, he smirked at her and she was too stunned to even push him away.
"Bhai control!" Abhi exclaimed, making the whole room erupt in to laughter, leaving them pink in embarrassment.
"arrey ... don't tease them Abhi.." His mum reprimands, but she couldn't surpress her own laughter.
They finally cracked a smile, his hand supporting her back proudly.
"bhai aur bhabhi ki baby, little prince hai ya princess?" Aditi asked cutely, clapping her hands in excitement, Zain watched her beside him with a dreamy smile on his face
"a little boy beta..." his dad explained, and Aditi's eyes lit up in joy, turning round and kissing Zain's cheek sweetly without thinking.
"You are going to be a chachu again baba..." She congratulates him under her breath, making him smile warmly, his heart aching.
"Aur tum chachi..." He rests a kiss in her hair, murmuring in to his scalp. Everyone else just says nothing, just watching them in awe.
"You are going to be the best chachu in the world , you're already the best chachu in the world..." He chuckles softly at her earnestness, his hand stroking up her leg and resting on her thigh.
"So when are you going to make me the best papa in the world?" He whispered faintly so that nobody could hear, his eyes glimmering in mischief as he eyed her soft lips cheekily, she gasped in shock at his boldness.
"Besharam!" She mumbles, bright red in embarrassment.
She yawns loudly, her head naturally leaned on his shoulder and her body curled up in to a ball against him without thinking of their surroundings. She tries to bury herself in to his sweatshirt as she shivers and his arm immediately wraps protectively around her side.
She suddenly realises what she's doing and forces herself to crank her head back up to look at his grinning parents shyly, he chuckles at her innocence kissing her scalp, "Go Adi... go and sleep baby..."
"No Zain!" She exclaimed like a child as if he had said the most outrageous thing in the world, "That's so rude, how could I do that?
"Aww meri perfect adi..." He kissed her temple gently again, all whilst their family awwed at them. "I'm telling you na, go and sleep. Don't stress yourself out..."
"Fine." She murmured, too tired to resist it. She held on to his thumb like a baby, her tired voice was the cutest thing he had ever heard, "tum bhi aao na mere saath..."
He opened his mouth to protest but sighed seeing her puppy eyes, ones he never refused.
"pleaseee" She pouted at him in that adorable, irresistible way, stil snuggling in to his sweatshirt. "I don't sleep well without you to cuddle, you know that..."
He admired her in awe, brushing away the hair scattered on her face. He pulled on his sweatshirt and carefully made her wear it, and turned her away subtly so no one could see him kiss away her pout.
She smiled up at him in adoration, in surprise at how perfect he really was. He had an adorable apologetic face that hurt her heart, "I'll come in a bit, you try to sleep, okay?"
She nodded at him, checking tentatively whether Abhi and his parents were immersed in conversation before kissing his cheek affectionately, "goodnight jaan..."
He caressed his cheek in happiness as she stood up, pulling the sleeves of his sweatshirt with her hands to cover her more. She waved charmingly, "good night Ammi, papa... tum bhi Abhi... you all sleep soon too... please..."
His mother went over to her and kissed her hair fondly, rubbing her arm, "thank you beta..."
Aditi looked at her in confusion, making her grin, "I'll explain later baccha, you go and sleep now..."
...
Aditi clutches the necklace in her fist, squeezing it so tightly that her knuckles went white, as if it was going to give her reassurance. She stares out of the window, rubbing her arms to try and warm herself up.
She bit her lip, her eyes watering, she promised herself she wouldn't cry over it anymore. Zain was back, her Zain was back, nobody could hurt her anymore, she just had to forget it. Let it go.
She felt his hands wrap around her waist from behind, just making it more difficult for her not to break down in his arms. He rubbed her arms, as if knowing exactly what she needed, she leaned back in to him, melting in to his embrace.
He smiled at her softly, pecking her cheek and burying his nose in to her temple, inhaling deeply, "Aren't you sleepy Adi?"
"Hmm..." She knew her voice would shake if she said anything, she turned in to him slightly, pressing her cheek against his chest. He frowned as he tightened his arms around her, looking down at her in worry.
His finger absentmindedly traced light patterns on her belly, her eyes squeezed shut, her palms cupping his hands, "Adi? Kya hua?"
She picked at a button on his shirt, fiddling with it in an attempt to distract herself, "kuch nahi... bus neend nahi aa rahi hai..."
He furrowed his brows, staring at her in silence, clearly unconvinced, he plays with the strands of her hair that had fallen out of her high ponytail, "Then why do you look so tense? You know I hate it when you're upset..."
"I just- it's nothing Zain..." She pushed him away slightly, stepping away. She starts folding away his clothes that laid strewn on the bed, and he sighs at her diversion.
"Nothing? You promise there's nothing?" She sensed the fear in his voice, and felt the guilt biting away at her. She turns her face away from him, but she can't hide the way she wipes away a tear that trickles down her face.
"Nothing" she mutters, which hit him like a punch to the gut. She was lying to him. He went over to her, holding her wrist to stop her from walking away from him.
He caresses her cheek, his thumb stroking away her tear, "Adi batao mujhe..."
"It's nothing, i told you..." Her voice was strained now, almost desperate as she tried to get out of his grip.
"Adi... You can tell me anything, you know that, I am here with you... What do you have to be scared about?" She looks in to his eyes for a second, his lips parting as if she was contemplating it. But his eyes were so vulnerable, it would break his heart, she couldn't do that.
"I know... I know but-" She rested her forehead on his shoulder, his face evidently showed how terrified he was but he maintained his calm. He held her back supportively, and his hands gently roaming her back soothed her slightly, "But I'm okay..."
"Adi mujhse jhoot mat bolo..." He cupped her face, his eyes were sterner now, he'd had enough of her hiding things from him.
"I'm not-" Her whisper was barely audible, her eyes looking at the ground, the sinking feeling back in her stomach.
"Adi don't act like this." He went rigid, his voice more abrasive. She moved back slightly, knowing he was getting angry now, he had an bad temper when it came to things about her.
"I'm not acting like anything Zain." She retorted, her eyes glimmering with tears, his anger reminded her of the nasty memories lingering in her mind.
"Are you hiding things from me?" She saw the hurt in his eyes, she sighed seeing the tears brimming in his eyes, god she hated hurting him.
"No." Her voice shook, fiddling with the locket in her hands, she wanted him to stop being angry, she couldn't take it.
"Then?" He raised his voice, his gaze burned through her soul, she squeezed her eyes shut, her breathing ragged.
"Nothing, I'm-"
He yelled now, his eyes steeling as he stepped closer to her harshly, "What the hell is going on!? Why aren't you f**king talking to me Adi!?"
She flinched at his action, her hands moving to close her ears tightly. She coughed as if choking on her cries, pleading, "Don't yell... please Zain please dont yell..."
He panicked at her sudden change, curling up on herself as she rocked back and forth on her feet in some sort of trauma.
"Adi?" He gasped, his expression softening as he cupped his hands over hers on her ears in a split second, shielding her from her own thoughts. She clung to his shirt, burying her face in his chest, sobbing quietly.
He caressed her hair gently, his anger disappeared immediately, whispering sweet nothings in to her ear, "hey... look at me baby... breathe..."
"Don't get angry, don't yell please..."
He reeled back in guilt, he moved her hands away from her ear gently, she grasped on to his hands and he squeezed them in reassurance, "I won't, I won't yell, I promise... Don't cry baby please... it kills me when you cry..."
She nodded, playing with his fingers like a small child, he looked down at her, confusion and worry written all over his face, "You are going to be fine. How will I fix it if you won't tell me what's going on?"
She tensed again, making him close his eyes in defeat, he just couldn't get it out of her. She surprised him, uncurling his fist by stretching out his fingers and placing the necklace in his hand. She closed his hand around it again, looking up at him imploringly.
He looked at it in question, before glancing up at her again, "Pehenado mujhe... please..."
Her broken eyes shattered him, he was so scared and confused, he brushed away the hair on her face, "What's going on Adi?"
"Please Zain..." He could never deny her when she pleaded with his name in that voice, he sighed softly.
His nimble fingers untied her hair, gathered it and moved it around over her one of her shoulders. He watched her carefully as he slowly placed the locket around her neck, clasping it.
She shuddered at the comfort in his touch, the gnawing feeling in her stomach as the memories washed over her again. He tried to pull away to look at her properly but she just clung to him tighter, tugging at his shirt like a baby.
She grasped her arms around his neck, standing on her tip toes to snuggle her face in to the gap between his neck and his shoulder. He rubbed her back tenderly, "Adi you've got to talk to me..."
"Say it..." She whispered in to his ear, shivering slightly.
"Say what?"
"Tell me what you told me the first time you gave me this necklace... Say it again please Zain..." He felt her tears soak through his collar.
He pulled back slightly, wiping away the tear rolling down her face and leaning down to plant a kiss on her forehead, he smiles weakly. He spoke under his breath, his nose grazed her earlobe intimately, "I can't wait to make you Mrs Aditi Zain Imam one day..."
"Oh Zain..." She mumbled in emotion, still not moving her face from his shirt. She held his thumb and trailed it across the parting of her hair, as if he was applying sindoor on her. She took his hand and ran it over her body, down the side of her breasts, down her stomach and her thighs.
His hand clenched slightly as he frowned in puzzlement, it didn't feel right, she was so tensed under his touch, so fragile, that it felt like he was violating her.
He tried to move his hand away but she dragged it back, she grazed her body with his hand this way repeatedly, as if she was trying to helplessly erase something.
He didn't know what the hell was going on but he could sense her terror, He kissed her hair, and let his lips linger there, letting her lead his hand down her body with no questions, knowing that at this moment of time she needed him, he reassures her tenderly "I'm here baby... you're going to be okay... I'm here with you..."
"Promise me I'm going to be yours Zain..." She whimpered, chills running through her blood, as she tried her hardest not to cry.
He grimaced in pain seeing her so upset, he captured her lips delicately, sweetly, gingerly, he pulled back with a proud smile, "You're already mine Adi..."
His gentleness brings the urge to cry, chaotic and powerful, spilling hot tears down her cheeks, she hugs his waist, leaning her entire weight on him, dependant on him entirely.
He cradled her in his arms, lifting her on to the bed, sniffling back the tears that were caught in his throat. He covered her with a blanket, kneeling beside her in the bed, her heavy eyes are already closing as soon as he tucks a pillow under her head.
He gets up to get her water, knowing that her throat would sting the next day because of her crying. But he felt her tug him back, pulling his sleeve. She moves away from the pillow and places his arm under her head instead, looking back he saw that sulk, his weakness.
"I'm sorry..." she mumbled, half asleep, he kneeled back beside her, patting her hair. "Please don't hate me..."
"Adi-"
"mujhe chood ke mat jaana...please..." Whenever she spoke in hindi, with that pouting scowl, he knew how sensitive she was, it meant she was exhausted, she couldn't take it anymore.
He sighed in sadness, trying to pry her hand of his sleeve. When he tries to move her, she clings to him, hugging his waistband as he kneels, resting her sleepy head on his stomach.
"Aww baby..." He let out a deep shaky breath, he shifted her to the side and sat on the bed. He tried to lay down but she still gripped on to his stomach, so he stayed sitting, rubbing the side of her waist soothingly.
He watched her head rest on his stomach, slowly relaxing as she felt him rise and fall with his breaths. She smiled slightly, snuggling further in to him. He saw the way her hair stuck to her face with sweat.
He grabbed a hair band that she had left on the bedside table, gathering her hair and tying it, careful not to hurt her.
He wondered whether he should ask her what was wrong again, whether she would be ready to tell him now.
"Zain mujhe Mumma ki yaad aarahi hai..." She grumbled cutely, hiccuping back her tears as his heart stings, he pokes her nose playfully, trying to cheer her up.
"Mein maa ko phone kar do?" Zain asked softly, tracing his fingers down her features distractedly.
"Maa?" She asked in confusion hearing him call her mother this way, looking up with adorable excitement in her eyes. "But my family doesn't even know about you, they may not accept you, they liked my ex-"
"I love you Adi, and everything that's yours is mine, including your family..." She smiled up at him dreamily, and he shook her head at her childish behaviour affectionately. "And your problems Adi... you understand? Your problems are mine too..."
"I don't-" He could see her struggling again, and he leaves it, cuddling her protectively.
"If maa was here, what would she do?" She kisses his earlobe showing her thank you so sweetly, he chuckled gently watching her in awe.
"She would sing..."
"But I can't-" He sighed as she pouted, batting her eyelashes at him. "Okay... fine... but don't you dare mock my voice..."
"I love your voice Zainu..." she giggled as he rolled his eyes and pulled a face, but she knew he would never ever deny her of anything.
He cleared his throat, his knuckles running down her spine. She yawns, mewling cutely like a cat. She leans over him to get his phone from the bedside table. She opens his Instagram feed and scrolls through, lazily wrapping her leg around his waist.
"What's this?" Zain asks authoritatively, trying to suppress his smile at her cuteness. Her scrolling through his Instagram was a common thing, and he preferred it over her looking at her own and seeing all that hate.
He grabs the phone of her, making her huff in irritation, "You know that the light of the phone ruins your sleep, no phone."
"Zain..." She groans, but he shakes his head putting the phone back.
"I thought you wanted me to sing?" She stayed silent, smiling innocently, and he laughed knowingly.
His voice was husky, low and textured, it made butterflies flutter in her stomach, her heart pounding.
"Ke tere liye duniya chod diye
Tujhe pe hi saas aake rukhe
Mein tujhe ko kitna chahata hu
Ki tu kabhi soch na sake..."
A tear rolled down her face, as she kissed him where her head rested, she knew she shouldn't be hiding something from him, the guilt hurt like hell.
"kuchh bhi nahi hai ye jahaan
tu hai to hai is mein zindagi
ab mujhko jaana hai kahaan
ke tu hi safar hai aakhiri"
She looked up at him to see his eyes welled up with tears, hurt and love filled them, so much love that it could consume her soul entirely, so much love she didn't deserve.
She bit her lip, she wasn't going to sob again, "This is mumma's-"
"Favourite song... I know..." He whispered back, and her heart broke. He smiled at her with such devotion in his eyes that she cried softly. "You told me-"
She pounces on to him, capturing him in a bone crushing hug. She guided his hand to wrap around her tightly, "Hold me... please..."
She squeezed his hand that she put around her, coughing as she held back her sobs. He moved his other hand to cradle her head and cover her ears as if guarding her from the ugly world around her, shielding her from anything that could hurt her, "adi... shhh... I've got you..."
