I think it is all about time. Had mishti really been his own blood or even if not, Neil would have grown to love the kid. ( people who adopt kids love them as fiercely as biological parents do. Standing example: neela ma.)
Frankly, love is more about time. Neil, once upon a time was in love with juhi ( at least from his side), now he is in love with avni. So, practically thinking, love is not like a one time thing. You can fall into love and then love someone else too, it's just a matter of time.
And obviously, he would have been with avni during the entire pregnancy duration, would have seen pillu grow up, first words, first walk, first birthday and all diper changes and you know that kind of stuff which would have bonded him with the child, ( which mishti hadn't had) but still I do believe, by spending time with her, he would've loved her equally.
