Chapter 85
Bani turned to the idol. She wiped away her tears.
“Narayan, aapko toh pata hai. Aap mujhse zyaada jaante Veeranshu. Jab mujhe yakeen nahi tha uspar us waqt bhi aapko yakeen tha Veeranshu par. Mujhe pata hai. Andhera chahe kitna ghana ho, chahe kisi ka jaadu kitna bhi shaktishaali kyu na ho, aapke tej ko nahi rok sakta. Surya ke tej mein aap hai. Chaand ki thandak mein bhi aap hai. Ghane andhere mein bhi aap hai aur Roshni mein bhi aap hai.” Bani prayed to him.
Balwant put his hand on her shoulder.
“Bani, Veer mera beta hai. Mujhe pata hai. Agar koi hai jo maut ko hara ke laut aaye toh mera Veer hai. Tum dekhna. Humesha ki tarah sabko pareshaan karne ke baad laut aayega. Phir hasega aur kahega ki hum sabh pagal hai.”
“Bhabhi, I know Veer bhai theek ho jaayenge.”
Bani walked out looking for Veer. She saw him against a tree. He was corner. Almost like moving away from everyone. Bani had hurt him beyond her imagination but not even once had Veer shed tears or complained. No matter how much pain he was going through, he never broke down but now, looking at him, Bani could only imagine how much pain he was in. For Veer to actually lose his calm and break out into fits. It was a whiplash. Veer trying to control that murderous urge and him feeling even more pain.
“Veeranshu…” Bani tried.
Narayan turned and saw Bani. He smiled. Bani’s habit of not giving up until she has reached her goal made him believe in her to be Veer’s perfect half. He was the most stubborn soul he had come across. If there was anyone who could match that determination, it was Bani. While snakes were notoriously famous for quickly changing their minds, Bani was stead fast on her ground. Once she’s made her decision to stand by someone, she would do it till the end of the world.
Farishta tried to stop Bani but his magic didn’t work. He looked at himself. He couldn’t control anyone or anything.
“Kya kar rahe ho? Roko. Main Veeranshu ko marne ki koshish kar raha hun par pata nahi kaise woh bach raha hai.” Nikhil complained.
“Mera jaadu kaam nahi kar raha.”
“Haan. Yeh Narayan ka mandir. Yahan na toh naagon ki shaktiya hoti hai na hi cheelon ki. Sabh hi yahan normal insaan hote hai.”
“Main aam insaan nahi ho. Mujh mein insaan ka hissa nahi hai. Main farishta hun. Sar se leke pair tak sirf farishta hun. Swarg mein hi janam hua hai mera. Mera jaadu kaam karta hai. Hume kahin bhi jaadu karne se nahi rok sakte hai.”
The only answer was that his magic was gone. Farishta couldn’t understand why. There was no one else who could take away his magic but the Gods. That’s where his magic came from.
Nikhil groaned at Farishta. He should have taken help from someone who is stronger in their resolve. This Farishta seemed to be more bothered for his magic than the job. He had so well managed to manipulate Farishta into believing that Veer had very skilfully manipulated Bani into believing he truly loved her. He had told Farishta about how Veer had killed Jay. Very cleverly skipping the part where Jay had threatened to kill Veer and Meera. He told Farishta about Veer and Shakura’s match. Cutting out the part that the one to do the killing was Bani. All of this was done in a well-planned manner but now Nikhil felt like it was going to waste.
“Bas? Itna hi dam hai tum mein? Veer ko uske galtiyo ki saza dene ki determination khatam? Mujhe laga ki ek farishte mein isse zyada dam hoga. Tum bhi unn naagon ki tarah hi nikle. Phuski bomb ki tarah.”
“Tumhari samajh ke bahar hai. Agar meri shaktiya chali gayi hai toh iska matlab hai ki mujhe saza mili hai kisi baat ki.”
“Tumhe saza dena hai.”
Farishta turned to the idol of Narayan. He couldn’t understand. Did Narayan take away his powers? He couldn’t understand why. Veer was a cheel. That too a cheel who had done so many wrongs. He had killed a naag. He had killed his own kind.
“Kis baat ki saza hai yeh?”
“Iss baat ki saza hai ki tumne ek bekasur ko itni badi saza di hai.” Bani answered. There was so much anger and bitterness in her for this so-called angel.
“Woh bekasur nahi tha. Cheel tha. Cheel hote hi hai knoch khaane wale.”
“Veeranshu ko janam mila hi Markaat ko marne ke liye. Use Narayan banaya hi isiliye tha ki woh Markaat ko haraye. Par yeh baat na tum nahi samjhoge.”
“Naagin, pyaar mein tum andhi ho sakti ho. Main nahi.”
“Tum baat kar rahe ho Jay ko marne ki? Toh uski shuruat maine ki thi. Maine uske venom glands ko injure kiya tha. Pure naagvansh ki jaan khatre mein daal diya tha Jay ne. Kitne hi cheel jo Markaat ke liye kaam karte the, Naagvansh ke chaukhat tak aagaye the. Jay le aaya tha unhe. Jay aur Chandrakala. Naagmani ko Jay ke haath lagne se Veeranshu ne roka tha. Agar jaise tum keh rahe ho, Veeranshu bura hota toh kabhi Naagmani nahi lauta ta. Apne hi paas rakhta aur sabhko yahi lagta ki Naagmani Jay ke paas hai. Aur Naagmani kisi ki bhi baat nahi suntan.”
Farishta just looked astonished.
She was boiling with anger.
“Farishte kehlaane ke laayak hi nahi ho tum. Tumse zyaada toh rakshas better the. Veeranshu sanki tha phir bhi usne tak kabhi kisi ke aise pankh nahi cheen liye. Tum aaye the use maarne ke liye but tumne toh use itna torture kiya hai ki woh pagal hi ho gaya hai. Koi bhi uske aas paas jaaye toh uspar attack kar raha hai. Itni chot pohochayi hai use ki puri tarah toot gaya hai. Maine use bohot dard diya hai. Uska dil itni baad toda hai par ek baar bhi uske aankhon se aansu nahi aaye ya toota nahi par tumne use itna torture kiya hai ki toot gaya hai. Cheelon ko bura keh rahe ho par tumse toh better cheel hai. Markaat khud tak kisi ke family ko aade rakh ke torture nahi karta tha. Tum toh usse bhi zyaada nikle.”
“Adi-Naagin, tum mujhe galat samajh rahi ho.”
“Tum galat ho. Jo tumhare saath hua hai yeh toh phir bhi bohot kam saza hai. Apne ghamand mein tum khud ko hi judge bana baithe. Veeranshu andhere mein rehta tha par khud andhera nahi tha. Nageshwari ne Aakesh ko maar diya uske kuch pal baad hi Bholenath ne saza di kyuki galti hui thi. Toh mera Veeranshu se pyaar karna galat hota toh iss baar saza nahi dete? Kya hi zaroorat pad gayi tumhe khud decide karne ki?”
“Veeranshu -”
“Naam mat lena apne muh se uska.” Bani’s outburst was filled with rage. “Khud ko naagvansh ke well-wished kehte ho, usko maut ke muh mein tumne hi dhakela hai. Agar abh Veeranshu theek nahi hua toh death rune uspar control karlega. Uske baad toh main bhi nahi bacha paaungi Naagvansh ko. Saare naagvansh ko ek hi baar mein khatam kar sakta hai. Tum Veeranshu ko underestimate kar sakte ho main nahi karti. Veeranshu khud ko bohot acche se control karta hai par tumne…” Bani pushed Farishta, “Tumne use itna mentally torture kiya hai ki aisi halat ho gayi hai uski.”
“Ise toh main nahi chodunga. Isne hi kiya hai yeh sabh mere bete ke saath.” Balwant growled. He grabbed Farishta. Balwant punched Farishta hard on his face. Farishta fell down. Balwant had broke into his rage. He grabbed Farishta and threw him against the wall of the temple. Having lost his magic, he couldn’t use them to win against Balwant. Balwant kicked him in the gut and crashed him against a pillar.
Nikhil tried to intervene but Daksh punched him.
“Tujhe toh Veer bhai aisi saza denge ki agle 10,000 janam tak tu yaad rakhega. Bohot halke mein le liye tujhe.” Daksh growled.
“Tu abhi theek karega Veer ko.” Balwant growled at Farishta.
“Daddyji, yeh abhi kuch nahi kar sakta. Inke jaadu kuch aise hi hote hai. Wapas nahi le sakte hai.” Bani explained. Bani picked up and pot and hurled it against the wall angrily.
“Use sirf wahi mil raha hai jo usne -” Bani didn’t let Farishta complete his sentence. He had grabbed his throat and pushed him against the wall.
“Main aakhri baar warn kar rahi hun. Tumhe koi haq nahi hai Veeranshu ke baare mein kuch bhi kehne ka. Tum uska naam bhi lene ke layak nahi hai toh better tumhare liye yahi hoga ki tum chup raho. Warna pata chala ki tumhare shaktiyo ke saath saath zindagi bhi chali jaaye. Logo ko torture karte phirte ho na, main bhi batati hun ki torture kaise lagta hai. Uksaao mat mujhe.”
Farishta pushed away Bani. Daksh punched him in the face harder. Balwant and Pawan both tied up Farishta and Nikhil and put them in two different corners of the temple. Neither of them could help each other.
Bani looked at the idol.
“Kuch bhi samajh nahi aa raha ki kya karun.” Bani almost was in tears.
Narayan looked at Veer. He had never seen a creature of his kind. The only way he’d describe Veer is a creature. He wasn’t so human as to call him a human. He wasn’t animal enough to call him an animal. That is how shapeshifters in general are. Narayan knew he was tired of the dark. The Prince of Darkness felt tired of the dark now. It was the testament of the pain he was bearing. It was a wonder that Veer hadn’t lost control of himself till now. He sat next to Veer.
“Mann mein jo hai use nikaaloge nahi toh udoge kaise?”
“Pankh nikaal liye hai mere. Udna toh bas sapna hai abh.”
Veer looked up at the sky. He felt like a clipped bird. Someone whose wings were clipped. The love for the sky felt like unrequited love at this point. He can’t reach the sky.
“Veeranshu, suno. Mann ki peeda ko ashruo mein baha dena chahiye. Bachpan se leke aaj tak ashru bahaye hi nahi hai peeda ke. Uss har baat ki peeda jo tumhe andar hi andar khaaye jaa rahi hai.”
“Aur kya hi kahu main. Mere aankho ke saamne mere saare apne mare hue hai.”
“Jaise ghrina aur prem mein ek lakeer ka antar hota hai, waise hi maya aur satya mein ek hi lakeer ka hi antar hota hai. Gyaat hi nahi hota ki kabhi satya se maya ki taraf chal rahe hai. Ghrina se kabh prem ki or badh rahe hai yeh gyaat nahi hota parantu prem se ghrina ki or jab badh rahe ho tabh gyaat hota hai. Ussi prakar se kabh satya se maya ki or badh rahe hai gyaat nahi hota parantu maya se satya ki or badh rahe ho toh pata chal jaata hai.”
“Difference hi pata nahi chal raha. Kabhi itna helpless feel nahi kiya hai. Mujhe humesha se lagta tha ki main har cheez kar sakta hun. There’s nothing I can’t do. Pura aasmaan mere saamne jhukta hai. Mom bhi humesha hi kehti thi ki aisa kuch nahi hai jo main nahi kar sakta. Bohot confidence rehta tha iss baat ka. Abh aisa lagta hai ki nahi kar paaunga.”
Narayan gave him a dupatta. It was a really old one. Veer didn’t know how it got here. It was Ishana’s dupatta. Teer and him were painting a dupatta for her. They wanted to give it to her as a gift. Teer’s excellent painting skills and his own decorating part. Not the most beautiful looking one.
A peach dupatta with small floral designs on it. Veer had tried his own fingerpainting. A 5-year-old Veer was super proud of his art work. The smile on her face was so beautiful when she had received it. She could have the most expensive diamond necklace but nothing could match how expensive that dupatta was for her. Veer had himself attached that dupatta to his mother. He loved to see his mother wear it.
Veer took it. He had missed her so terribly.
“Veer, kya kar rahe ho? Can you please stop running around and put on your shoes? School ke liye late ho rahe ho.” His tie was in her hands. Veer was running around his shoes. Tapish and Teer both were busy eating breakfast. She picked him and put him on the chair. “Pareshaan kar dete ho tum. Now, better finish this quickly.” She put the breakfast before.
“No… I don’t want to go to school.” He complained.
“Sorry, Veer, but school toh tumhe jaana hi padega.”
She made him wear the school shoes.
“Kya kya sehna padh raha hai. Chote se bacche pe kitna zulm ho raha hai.” Veer sighed dramatically. Balwant laughed at Veer’s dramatic antics.
“See. Main bhi yahi kehta hun. We can have him home-schooled. Aise alag se school bhejne ki zaroorat nahi hai.” Balwant added.
“Please shut up. Baccha hai. Baccho ke saath nahi milega toh how will he become social? Pata chala bade hoke tumhari tarah bhalu ban jaaye.” She taunted him and turned around to Veer who was now standing on the chair. “And you, Veeranshu Singhania, you better be on your best behavior. Mujhe school se koi complaint nahi chaiye ki tum phir se kisi ke saath ladai kar rahe ho.”
“Simple solution hai ki school se phone aaye toh mat uthao. Toh you’ll not have to listen to their complaints. Or even better, don’t send me to school.” Veer commented.
“Ek aur solution hai tum agar acche baccho ki tarah banoge then I won’t send you to school.”
Veer sighed loudly. “Ramesha kaka, please mera school bag dedo. Pata nahi kis janam ki saza hai yeh. I have to go into an infestation of little creatures.”
Ishana broke into laughter at that.
Veer missed her a lot. He had never worried about a single thing while she was there. It was as if he believed that all his troubles could be erased by her single assurance. He held the dupatta by to his heart.
“Nahi ho raha, mom. I just feel so helpless. Haar gaya ho jaise.” Veer said.
“Veeru, aise haar maan loge toh kaise chalega?” Veer looked up and saw Ishana standing there. She was wearing yellow kurti.
“Mom?!” He was surprised. Veer stood up at the sight of her. She sat down next to him. Veer kneeled down before. Tired and almost losing the war of control. He was almost giving in. “Bas nahi ho raha.”
She held his head and kissed his forehead.
“Itni jaldi haar maan liye? Mera Veeru kahan gaya?”
“Bohot dard ho raha hai. I keep seeing everyone dead. Bani…”
“Someone is really dead if there is no one to remember them, Veer. Immortality iss baat mein hai ki log tumhe humesha yaad rakhe. Jinka naam waqt bhi nahi mita sakta, they are immortal. Jab tum unhe bhula doge tabh they’ll be dead.”
“I just don’t know, mom. Samajh hi nahi aata ki sahi kya hai aur jhooth kya hai. Jise apni maa ki tarah pyaar diya, she turned out to be someone who would be willing to kill me. Kis par yakeen karun?”
Veer had begun to break down all the walls.
“Chachi bhi chali gayi. Kya unhe ek pal ke liye bhi yeh nahi laga ki bas humare liye ruke?”
“Veer, Ahana agar maa hai toh she’s also a person. Being a mother not her entire identity. Being mother is a great thing, no doubt, par sirf wahi toh ek aurat ko define nahi karta. She is more than just a mother to her kids.”
“Gussa nahi hai unpar, mom. I know she probably was right in her place but I miss her. I miss you. Ek baar ke liye lagta hai I should give up the fight and walk to you.”
Ishana looked at her son. That tears he had stuff inside him while watch his mother’s dead body being burnt had struck the tears. Veer had stopped crying since then about anything. Last time he cried was for his brother.
“Your name is Veer, chote bhai.” Teer pointed out. “Tera toh naam hi Veer hai. Tu kaise haar maan le? Saalon andhere mein raha hun, Veer. Par tujhe dekh ke humesha hi Khushi mil jaati thi. Mere hisse ki udaan bhi tu bhar leta tha. Abh kyu nahi. Mere hisse ki udaan abhi aur hai, Veer. Aise beech mein kyu chod raha hai. Mere udne ki chahat abhi puri nahi hui hai.”
“My wings…”
“They’ve clipped your wings, Veer, not your flight. Jab tak dil mein himmat ho, tabh tak koi bhi udd sakta hai. All you need is a bit of courage to fly.” Teer told him.
“This madness… yeh jaise khaaye jaa rahi hai. Dard bhi itna ho raha hai ki mann karta hai ki I should stop fighting.”
“Veer, ek baat bata. Why did you fight Markaat? Kyu tumne Markaat ko marne ka decision liya?” Ishana asked.
“Kyuki woh galat tha. He killed innocent people. He was a tyrant who wanted to destroy everything. Har Roshni ki kiran ko andhera bana sakta hai. Sabse upar banna chahta tha. Which frankly shouldn’t be possible. Food web banaya gaya tha so that there is no one who can be the most powerful in the animal kingdom. Chaos mein bhi toh kahin na kahin order hota hai. Even if we’re freaks of nature, we can’t be such a deviation from laws of nature which is made to protect the innocent. Yeh chain disturb karke sabh kuch khatam kar deta. Isiliye Markaat ko mara. Uski ideology galat thi ki kahin pohochne ke liye someone can give up all their morals.”
“Abhi give up karoge toh tum bhi same hi hojaaoge, Veer. Tu mera beta hai. Mujhe pata hai ki tujhmein abhi bohot himmat bachi hai. 10,000 divya varsh apne pyaar se alag rehke uska intezaar kar sakta hai, uski nafrat seh kar pyaar mein badal sakta hai toh yeh kya cheez hai?”
“Abh dard aur bardaash nahi hota. I can’t bear the sight anymore.”
Ishana simply wrapped her arms around Veer. She hugged him tightly.
“Tujhpar toh meri jaan qurbaan hai, chote bhai.” Teer hugged him. “Tujhpar toh Tapish bhai apni jaan qurbaan kar de.”
“Tumhare liye main hazaar bar phir se wahi maut sehne ke liye tayyar hun.” Ishana said. “I miss you more than you could understand, Veer. Par tu abhi mere paas aa jaaye yeh nahi chahti. I want you to have every happiness in the world and then finally when he decides that you’ve lived your part enough, tabh tu aa jaana mere paas.”
“Tujhse bohot zyaada pyaar hai, chote bhai. Tu mera bhai hai. You’re my twin. Dil mein kitni iccha thi ki bar ek baar tera saath aasmaan mein udd paau.”
“Hum sabh tere liye har baar jaan de sakte hai, Veer. You can’t forever stuff pain in your heart. You feel you can’t fly anymore because you’re too full of every trauma you’ve felt. Dil se nikala hi nahi hai. Kabhi utni azaadi thi hi nahi ki roke apne dard ko baha de. Bas ek baar uss azaadi ko feel karoge toh samajh aa jaayega ki free kaise hote hai. Bani ko udna sikhaya aur khud bhul gaye?”
“I don’t want her to have this broken piece. She deserves someone who is complete, mom.”
“Tum kaise decide kar sakte ho ki use kya chahiye. Tumhe kya chahiye yeh tum decide kar sakte ho par use kya chahiye yeh use decide karne do. Marne ke baad bhi do ghanto tak dil dhadakta hai, Veer. Jab koi pyaar karta hai kisi se, toh iss baat se koi fark nahi padta ki he’s broken or not. Bas use pyaar dena jaante hai. Bani ne tumse nafrat ki par kya iss baat ke liye chodke chale gaye tum?”
“Nahi…”
“Toh agar woh tumse pyaar karti hai toh kaise tumse alag ho sakti hai. People heal, Veer. All wounds heal. You need to give them time. Jab chot mein kuch atak jaaye toh use nikalna padta hai theek se heal hone ke liye. Chot lag jaaye kaanch se toh glass ke saath hi heal nahi kar sakte Veer, it becomes more dangerous. Pehle kaanch ko nikalna padta hai phir jaake wound heal hota hai.”
Veer hugged her.
“I know you’re not alive but this is a part in my mind.”
“Kuch cheezein samjhani mushkil hoti hai, Veer. Farishte ke jaadu mein jhooth hota hai. Traps mein jhooth hota hai. Par Hari ki maya mein bhi sach hota hai.”
“I don’t presume he’ll bother himself with someone like me. Not the most religious person in the world.”
“Vishwas hota hi aisa hai. Patthar ki murat mein bhi kisi ko Hari dikh jaate hai aur kisi ko saamne khade hote hue bhi nahi dikhte. Vishwas hota hi aisa hai. Ho toh sabh hi Hari hai. Na ho toh kisi bhi roop mein nahi dikhenge.” Narayan pointed out chuckling. He was sitting on that tree again.
“Jaise tumhe bohot pata hai.”
“Tum dekh lo. Ho bhi sakta hai.”
“Pata nahi unhe mujhpe hi gussa ho ki maine Markaat ko maara ho.”
“Samrat tumhe bohot pyaara hai na.”
“Sam?”
Veer almost felt panic. Was Sam in trouble.
“Tumhara bhai apni zindagi aur maut se lad raha hai. Tumhare liye, usne Farishte se ladai ki aur bohot chot lagi hai use. Kabse aise lad raha hai. Tumhara bhai zindagi aur maut se lad raha hai, Veeranshu. Tum andhere se lad hi sakte ho na? Tumhare liye Bani puri duniya se lad jaati hai, uske liye toh andhere se lad hi sakte ho na?”
“Sam sach mein theek nahi hai?”
“Hospital mein hai. Critical. 5 dino se hai.”
“Mujhe Sam ke paas jaana hai.”
“Toh tumhe Farishte ke jaadu ko todna hi hoga.”
Narayan jumped off the tree and offered him a hand.
“Vishwas karke dekho, Veeranshu. Sabh kuch ho sakta hai. Vishwas kiya hai toh manushya Chandra tak pohoche hai. Vishwas kiya hai toh tumne Markaat ko haraya hai. Vishwas kiya hai toh Bani ki nafrat ko pyaar mein badla hai.”
Veer took a deep breath. He put his hand in Narayan’s hand. Narayan smiled. The moment Veer did that, Veer could feel his tears fall down.
Veer found himself at the temple. He had no idea how he had reached there. He saw Bani standing there.
“Bani!” Veer said.
“Veeranshu…” Bani ran towards him.
“Sam?” Veer asked.
“Hospital mein hai.”
“Mujhe abhi wahan jaana hai. Please…”
They took him back to the hospital. In that moment, Veer didn’t care about the blood that was pouring out of his back because of the wings being cut. He didn’t care about the pain. He didn’t care about Farishta showing up suddenly. He didn’t care about anything.
Veer started running ahead. Veer saw Tapish, Ponky, Meera, Pawan and Vanshika there. Vanshika was almost crying.
“Sam?” Veer asked.
“Uski condition bohot critical hai.” Vanshika answered, almost breaking down. “Mom keh rahi hai he’s close to slipping into coma. Koi reaction nahi hai.”
Veer went inside the room Sam was kept in. He stumbled a bit seeing so many pipes attached to him. So many machines attached to him. Sam was injured in several places. Bani almost turned around. She hugged Balwant at the sight of Sam. Balwant held her and patter her head.
“Kuch nahi hoga. Theek ho jaayega.” Balwant assured her.
In the time she had known Sam, she had grown really close to him. He was almost her best friend. Someone she could confess her feelings to. Someone who she can tell her deepest secrets.
“Samrat, mazak mat kar. Get up.” Veer told Sam. He had never called Sam by his full name. It had been ages since any of the Singhanias called him Samrat. They all called him Sam. “Dekh already bohot dard ho raha hai mujhe, tu aur mat pareshaan kar.”
When there was no reaction, Veer felt like breaking.
“Main already kaafi apno ko kho chuka, Samrat. Please tu toh mat jaa.” Veer’s voice cracked.
“Veer... ro mat. Theek ho jaayega.” Balwant assured him. Vanshika ran out. She could bear. Veer turned around and looked at her running away. He went out behind her. She was out of the hospital at the back of the hospital. She sat down. Breaking down into tears.
“Kabse keh rahi hun usse. Baat hi nahi sun raha hai.” She broke into tears. She kicked the pots angrily. It was crying with a tantrum. “5 dino se wahin pada hua hai. Na toh hilta hai na hi Aankhen kholta hai. Yeh kya tareeka hai kisi se badla lene ka? Kis baat ka badla hai, yaar? Jab usse aise baat ki thi tabh khud hi hosh mein nahi thi.”
Veer sat down next to her. Meera hugged Vanshika and Bani put her arms around Veer. Veer broke into tears.
