he saw bela breaking down in front of him. For Mahirji that represented two things.
One, he always has taken bela to be a woman of steel spine who doesn't show her weakness to anyone, to a point where she has refused his aid many a times. To see her breaking down completely, that too in front of him. She actively came to him, she seeked his comfort in her times of turmoil, that meant a lot to him. She was looking for peace in his arms during her times of crisis.
Two, he himself was becoming too desperate in fear of losing her.

Twice he mentioned he will die/ wouldn't live without her, by second time, bela snapped at him for saying that! She didn't appreciate hearing that, she isn't okay with him talking so casually about being bodily harmed. That is bela for me.

My bets are still on bela being a slytherin. Her ego, her sense of duty, her loyalty, her cunning plans to trap the enemy, her first reaction after losing her love, her control over her emotions, I can go on and on.
