CHAPTER 26
Next morning, things had settled down a bit and Rehan was able to come and pick up BeHir. He thanked the Sharmas was taking care of his sister. Once all the thankyous and goodbyes had been said, they stared back. When they reached home, Amma and Sumi ma were waiting for them at the door. They both did something to ward off the evil eye and then allowed BeHir to enter the house. They both wanted to start working immediately but Amma and ma had forbidden them from working.
Even though they had had a conversation regarding their kiss, they felt as though something had changed between them. Their relationship had suddenly become very formal. They were consciously avoiding touching each other. Their interactions were also becoming increasingly work related only. They no longer shared the details of their day with each other. There was a time when the silences between them would be comforting. Now the silence had become deafening. They constantly felt the need to fill the silences with irrelevant chatter or noise of some sort. Both were actively avoiding each other's company these days.
Kitni baatein yaad aati hai
Tasveerein si ban jaati hain
Main kaise inhein bhooloon
Dil ko kya samjhaaun
Kitni baatein kehne ki hai
Honton par jo sehmi si hai
Ik roz inhein sun lo
Kyun aise gum-sum ho
Kyun poori ho na paayi daastaan
Kaise aayi hai aisi dooriyaan
Dono ke dilon mein chhupa hai Jo ik anjaana sa gham
Kya ho paayega woh kam
Koyi kya kahe
Dono ne kabhi zindagi ke Ik mod pe bhi jo paayi
Hai kaisi woh tanhaai
Koyi kya kahe
Kitna viraan hai ye sama
Saanson mein jaise ghulta hai dhuwaan
Kaisi aayi hai aisi dooriyaan
They would constantly try to avoid being together. The time spent in their room had become torturous. They would have nothing to say to one another and the silence would be unbearable. Mahir found himself thinking up excuses to avoid going home early. Or if Bella happened to be working in the office till late he would find excuses to rush off early. They avoided travelling together almost every day. Sharing a bed had become some sort of a cruel punishment. They would sleep on two ends of the bed in a bid to avoid touching each other in their sleep. Many a times, Bella would wake up to one of her legs dangling from the bed as she had slept too close to the edge. Mahir would find himself on the floor most of the times as he would fall off the bed because he had slept too close to the edge.
Outwardly they pretended that everything was normal, but inwardly they knew that a single kiss had changed everything. If they were being honest with themselves, that kiss had opened the doors to a pleasure which neither of them had experienced ever before. They both would dream about that kiss and would wake up to find themselves covered in sweat. It was a pleasure that they wanted badly but couldn't have it. Many a times they would catch themselves trying to look for excuses to touch one another.
Mahir would feel very guilty whenever he would think of how Bella had looked without her pallu covering her; or how good it had felt to hold Bella in his arms, to touch her back and waist. Bella would get constant dreams of a shirtless Mahir hugging her; of a shirtless Mahir caressing her face. She would feel very guilty for having such thoughts about her best friend.
They also constantly missed each other's company. They had spent nearly all of their life in each other's company. They missed those days when there was no awkwardness between them. They both cursed the moment when they had kissed each other. It is said that ignorance is bliss. They both were ignorant of the pleasures of physical intimacy and hence they had been leading a blissful life. But ever since that door had opened, it was very difficult to ignore and impossible to close it.
They spent the next fifteen days or so feigning normalcy in front of their family and actively avoiding each other. It was becoming increasingly difficult to keep up the pretence any longer. They had both run out of excuses for not travelling together, for not sitting besides each other during meals, for working even on weekends. Amma, Appa and Sumi ma had begun to question them. Thank god Rehan and Kuhu had gone out of town for a bit.
If they were being completely honest with themselves, they both knew what the problem was. The only thing was that they did not know how to solve it. So they kept on ignoring the problem, hoping that it would disappear one day. Bella missed Mahir's constant presence in her life. Even Mahir missed Bella always being there by his side. Eventually, tired of this constant skirting around, Bella decided to address the elephant in the room. She knew what the problem was.
Physical attraction had never been a dynamic of their relationship before. But that day's kiss had changed everything for her. She now felt physically attracted towards Mahir. There was no getting over or avoiding that fact. Every time she was with Mahir, she wanted him to hold her, to kiss her, she wanted to feel his strong arms around her, she wanted him to rip off her clothes and love her. She missed how their relationship was but there was no way they could go back to the way they were before. There was no way their relationship could be platonic ever again. At least for her. She had no idea what Mahir felt. So if she wanted some semblance of normalcy in her life and relationship she had to be truthful to Mahir and confess to him that she was physically attracted towards him. There was strong chance that Mahir might not like it and their friendship dynamics might change forever but she had complicated the matters and she would face the consequences. But about one thing she was very sure, Mahir would never juddge her for her feelings. He was her safe place to confess anything and everything.
Unknown to her, Mahir was having similar thoughts and was building up his courage to tell his best friend that he was physically attracted to her. Not the easiest thing to do. Mahir knew that Bella would not judge him but he was sacred of losing Bella. But this had to be done. He couldn't spend another day with her in the same room and not touch her, caress her face. He couldn't live with the guilt of having sexually explicit dreams about his best friend and wishing he could do all those things to her or she would do all those things to him. He couldn't live with the guilt that he was constantly finding ways of touching Bella, and then stopping himself. And most of all he couldn't live without his best friend in his life, her constant absence had created a void that was almost physically painful. He wanted his best friend back.
So that night when everyone had gone to bed, BeHir sat in their room, in complete silence, trying to think of ways to bring up the subject. Eventually they both decided to give it up for the night try again the next day. But they couldn't sleep either. They kept tossing and turning when,
BeHir: We need to talk!!
M: You first.
B:No, you first.
M: No you
B: No you
M: You
B: You
M: Bella stop complicating things and just say it. Because whatever I want to discuss in very important.
B: So? Even I want to say something very important.
M: Mine is more important.
B: Do you know what I want to say? No? Then how can you decide that whatever you want to say in more important?
M: True.
B: Let's do one thing, let's say it together.
M: Let's text it to each other. Together. What do you think?
B: Good idea! Hey Mahir, whatever I want to say can said in a single sentence. It will need some explanation later on but the crux of the matter can be told in a single sentence.
M: Mine too.
They both brought their mobile phones and typed I find you physically attractive' and sent the message.
BeHir: What???? You too??
M: Yes Bella.
B: Yes, me too.
M: So what changed?
B: That day's kiss changed everything for me.
M: Me too.
B: So what do we do about it?
M: I don't know. I know one thing our relationship is never going to be just platonic ever again.
B: Yes. Mahir, I was thinking. Since we both feel the same, let's act upon it.
M: What? But Bella, we are not husband and wife. We are best friends, right? Then how can we...?
B: Logically speaking we are husband and wife, we don't think of it that way that's all.
M: Bella I am afraid that if we go ahead with this then our relationship will become like a normal husband and wife relationship. I don't want to lose our friendship.
B: True, even I don't want to lose our friendship.
M: So, then what o we do?
B: Hmmm. Okay! I have an idea!!! Let's become friends with benefits.
M: What?
B: Yes! Think about it, it's all about perception. It's been nearly nine months to our wedding. We both feared that we will lose our friendship after our marriage. But did that happen?
M: NO.
B: Why didn't it happen? Because we did not let our perception about each other change. No gender roles came into play after our marriage. I did not suddenly start giving you undue respect nor did you start disrespecting me or treating me any differently than you used to. Look at Amma Appa. They did not have the privilege of knowing each other before they got married. But after being married for nearly thirty years they are best friends with each other. It's all about how we perceive the other person. If we don't let the perception change then, nothing will change. So, Mahir Sehgal, will you be friends with benefits with me?
M: Yes.
B: So ummm... Now what?
M: Bella can I ask you something?
B: Of course.
M: Bella, will this perception thing work even after we have kids?
B: KIDS?
M: Yes, kids. See if we are going to be doing certain things then there is 200% possibility that, in a few years time you will need those maternity gowns that I bought for you. So tell me... Bella are you blushing?
Bella had turned a delicate shade of pink.
B: No I am not.
M: Yes you are!
B: NO
M: Yes. I never thought I would see the day when Bella Kapoor will actually blush, and that I would be the reason.
B: It's Bella Sehgal mister. Bella Mahir Sehgal. And no I am not blushing.
M: What?
B: I said it's Bella Mahir Sehgal. Although I will always be Bella Kapoor to our associates and business partners, in social setting I am Bella Mahir Sehgal. I have no qualms in attaching your name with mine. Don't you dare forget that.
M: Don't change the topic Bella. You were blushing.
B: You don't change the topic. What were you asking me?
M: Well, yeah I was going to ask what do you think about kids?
B: Certain things huh? I think someone has read the biology text book.
M: Yes. And know now why you lost it at that time. I was so stupid. But now I know how pregnancy works. So tell me what do think about kids; as in having kids?
B: Well I love them. I would love to have kids of my own someday. And I know you adore kids. Seeing your enthusiasm during my fake pregnancy I gathered that you will love to become a father someday.
M: Okay. Well I am glad that that topic is out of our way now. I have never felt so awkward in my life. The last two were the most awkward weeks of my life.
B: Well yes... So ummm... What now? I mean now that we have decided to...
M: I don't know. You tell me. It's my first time.
B: You are talking as though I have a lot of experience with these things.
M: No, but you are the smart one among the two of us, so you tell me.
B: Mahir, there is something I want to talk to you about. I look forward to sharing all kinds of experiences with you but...
M: But?
B: But I am scared.
M: Scared of what Bella?
B: I know you will never hurt me. But I have read that it hurts a lot during the first time. I don't know if I am ready for that yet. I am sorry that I am giving out really mixed signals right now but can we ease into this change? I mean can we take it slow?
M: Of course Bella. We don't have to rush into anything. We will go as slowly as you want it to go. See I can't assure you that it won't hurt; but I can assure you that whenever that phase comes, I will make your comfort my utmost priority. For me nothing is more important than your happiness Bella. I know you know this but still.
B: It feels good to hear it once again.
M: So? Good night Bella.
B: What?
M: Good night. You only said that we will take it slow.
B: Not so slow.
M: Then what do you want to do now?
B: Listen I might be a modern girl but I believe in gender roles when it comes to taking the initiative in relationships. Technically speaking I had proposed you for marriage when I said I want to marry Mahir if he wants to marry me. So now it's your turn. Take the lead Mahir, I am waiting.
M: Take the lead? Okay... So... Ummm can we... I mean can I... I mean can we... kiss Bella?
B: Okay, that will be a good place to start I suppose.
They both stood in front of each other and looked into each other's eyes. Bella felt herself blushing and hoped that Mahir won't notice; but Mahir himself had turned pink and had begun to feel as if the temperature had gone up suddenly. That day it had been so easy, so natural. And today it felt as difficult as giving a maths exam. Mahir hesitantly placed a hand on Bella's shoulder and Bella did the same. They both tilted their heads and tried to kiss. The first time they tried, their noses banged against each other. They both burst out laughing. When they finally stopped laughing, they tried once again. This time their lips met and they stayed that way for some moments before breaking away.
M: Awkward.
B: Very awkward.
M: Who the hell said that last two weeks were the most awkward weeks of our lives?
B: You said.
M: This worse than that.
B: True.
M: I don't know if we can do it Bella. If we are so bad at kissing then, the advanced stages are well out of our syllabus.
B: Mahir, don't worry. Practice makes man/woman perfect. Did we ever solve a maths sum in the first attempt itself?
M: No.
B: Then what did we do?
M: We practiced till we got it right.
B: Exactly! We will practice for this as well. Till we become experts.
