Hi! Vrishthi. For the last one hour I tried to include songs in my narrative but I feel songs don't suit my writing style which in a bit dry and no nonsense. To need to include songs the wring style should be a lot more dramatic and soft. you know? Like the author of Wajah TumHo BeHir FF The songs go really well with his/her writing style. With mine they kind of give a forced vibe.

It was a good suggestion but will not work out immediately. I will keep it in mind for the next time I write something/ 😊

CHAPTER 16

The next was day the Mehendi function; everyone was relaxed as such. Kuhu knew a girl who drew beautiful henna designs and so Kuhu had called her. Her name was Arti. When Arti and her assistants came home, Bella told her that she wanted her henna design to start an inch or so above her elbow and end at her finger tips. Her fingertips were not to be covered with designs but with globs of henna so the colour would be dark. And yes, she wanted a very dense design. Bella rarely got a chance to adorn her hands and feet with henna so whenever she got a chance she went all out. Also her feet were to be adorned from knees to her toes.

Arti knew that covering Bella's arms and legs would take a lot of time so she started off somewhere around four in the evening. Sumi ma had declared that all the boys were to remain at a calls distance from the function; because once the girl's arms and feet were covered with henna they would have hard time eating and drinking anything. So the boys were on food and water duty. She and Amma were the last to get their hands adorned.

There was a ritual that they followed, on the wedding night, the groom had to look for his name or initial in the bride's henna design. If he was able to find it he was allowed to enter the bride's chamber for the wedding night; if not then he would have to sleep outside. Sumi ma had especially asked Arti to hide Mahir's initial in such a way that it would be difficult for him to find it. And for good measure she had blindfolded Bella when Arti was adorning her hands. Sumi ma knew if Bella knew where Arti had drawn Mahir's initial then she would help him find it.

Bella was once again all decked up for the function. She did not see any point in getting ready for that function as there were sure shot chances that her dress might get spoilt if the henna paste got on it, but Amma, Sumi ma, Kuhu and Suhani had all ganged up on her, she had had to give in. Now she was feeling very irritated as the dress was getting in the way of the girl adoring her feet and so she had asked Bella to keep it bunched up at her thighs. Since Bella's hands were also covered with henna she couldn't use them. So, frustrated, she called Mahir.

B: Mahir!

M: Yes ma'am! What can I do for you?

B: Hold up my dress.

M: What?

B: I said bunch up my dress at my thighs and keep it there.

M: Ummm. Okay.

Mahir carefully rolled up her ghagra that she was wearing and kept it bunched up at her thighs. As soon as he let go of it, it came sliding down. Bella simply glared at him. Mahir quickly gathered her ghagra once again and placed it on her thighs. Having accomplished that, he went and sat behind her and placed his on the either sides of her waist and held her ghagra in place. All this while Kuhu and Suhani were laughing at him. Both of them were wearing loose salwars and they had folded and pinned them up to keep them out of the way. Bella had actually insisted that she will sit wearing shorts as the fabric will not get in the way, but no one had listened to her. Her question that how the hell was she going to get out that ghagra was met with a very curt response from Amma; don't worry I will help you out of your dress and then get henna applied to my hands.

After about half an hour Mahir's back and legs were beginning to ache. Bella was felling very sorry for him. When Amma came into the room for something, she took pity on him and helped Bella by pinning up the ghagra. Now Bella being a girl with extremely sober tastes, her ghagra was not a very heavy one so pinning it up was not very difficult. Having relived Mahir she sent him off to get some water for all the girls. Mahir came back with water for everyone and had also called Rehan and Pratham. All the boys fed water to their respective partners. While making her drink water, some of the water spilled on Bella's chin. Mahir immediately took out his handkerchief and dabbed away the water.

Once Bella's both hands and feet were covered, she sat for some time till the paste had dried completely. Once completely dry, Amma and Sumi took her upstairs and helped her change into her night clothes. Rehan and Pratham helped Kuhu and Suhani change. By that time only Amma and Sumi ma were left. It was about nine at night when everyone's hands were completed. Dolly had prepared their dinner by then. Appa insisted that Amma should eat as she had to take her medicines on time. Even Bella and Kuhu insisted that Sumi ma should eat on time. So Mahir and Rehan filled a plate for her sat on either sides of Sumi Ma and fed her the food.

Appa was feeding Amma and Pratham was feeding Suhani. Bella was beginning to feel hungry by then but she knew that it was on such occasions that Sumi ma felt very lonely. She never said anything but she still felt Andy's absence. Rehan and Mahir never let her feel left out. Their priority was always keeping ma happy. They both were aware that Kuhu and Bella were hungry but they first made Ma eat some food and then filled plates for them.

After dinner, Amma told Rehan to make mixture of fresh lemon juice and sugar and apply it to all the girl's hands. Mahir came to Bella with a bowl of that mixture and wad of cotton. He gently applied the mixture to her arms and then her feet.

Bella had extremely silky hair and no matter how tightly they were tied they came loose after some time unless secured by lots and lots of bobby pins; like Amma had done on the day of the engagement. Today she had let her hair fall loose secured at the back by a simple butterfly clip. They had lasted for the evening, but were becoming quite loose now. Mahir noticed Bella's hair troubling her and he immediately went and washed his sticky hands and came back with a hair brush. He had had a lot of practice in tying her hair when they were kids.

Getting Bella ready for her school on time would be quite a task for Amma. Since Bella's hair were extremely silky, they would get tangled, and each morning while untangling them Bella would scream and squirm as it would hurt her. It was worst on Mondays as Amma would wash her hair every Sunday. Although she would apply oil at night, but Bella's hair were such that no matter how much oil Amma applied at night, her hair would be a tangled mess in the mornings. It would be especially difficult on Mondays as single application of oil never managed to tame her hair. So, when they were about seven or eight, Mahir had taken up the responsibility to braid Bella's hair for school on Mondays.

Somehow Bella never had a problem with how Mahir handled her hair. Even Sumi ma had given up trying. Initially, Mahir would make a mess of it, but slowly he learnt how to braid Bella's hair. And then it had almost become a ritual that every Monday, Mahir would braid Bella's hair. Now, Mahir would rarely get a chance to braid her hair as she mostly tied up her hair in a high bun or a chignon for work or would leave them loose whenever they were outside of work environment.

So when Mahir started gently brushing her hair, Bella smiled. Many of the childhood memories came flooding back to her. Even Amma, Appa and Sumi ma smiled to see them like that. Once he had thoroughly brushed her hair, he very swiftly braided her hair and secured them with rubber band. She turned and gave him smile, which he returned. Having finished doing her hair, he once again started applying the lemon and sugar mixture to the remaining portions of her feet.

Once he was done with that he went had tied up Kuhu and Suhani's hair as well since neither of their husbands knew how to tie a girl's hair. It was pretty late by the time they all went off to sleep.
