CHAPTER 17
Everyone woke up pretty late that day as they had slept rather late. After waking up the first thing that the girls did was to scrub off of the dried bits of henna from their hands and feet. There was a lot of ohhing and aahhhing over the designs and whose henna was the darkest. It so turned out that Bella's was quite dark. Everyone teased her about it saying that Mahir truly loved her.
B: Of course Mahir loves truly. I did not need henna to tell me that. He loves as I love him.
Bella, always the more practical one, did not believe in this nonsense. Arti had left behind some henna cones, so after Mahir had had his bath, Sumi ma made him sit down and wrote Bella's name on his hand. He was told to keep it till evening. Bella had a really difficult time taking a bath that day. Amma had helped her cover her arms and feet with plastic bags, so she ended up taking a shower. Once she was done, they all sat down for breakfast.
After breakfast Amma and Sumi ma declared that the bride and her groom were to go and visit the kuldevi mandir and take blessings before the wedding. So everyone started off together. By that time the media had come to know of BeHir's wedding and they had set up their camp outside their house. As soon as the stepped out, their cars were surrounded by the media trying to get an official statement. Eventually Amma, Appa, Sumi ma and BeHir stepped out of the cars and answered some of the questions.
Reporter: Is it true that you are marrying Ms. Kapoor, Mr. Sehgal.
Mahir took Bella's hand in his hand and they both smiled brightly at the cameras.
M: Yes it's true. We are getting married at the end of this week.
Reporter: Why this sudden decision?
B: The cupid doesn't strike you by informing you. Mahir and I have known each other for years now. When we realised that we want to spend our lives together, there was no point in waiting.
Reporter: Mr. Singhania is absent from all of the functions...
B: Yes dad chose to not attend his son's wedding.
Reporter: Sumitra ji, what will this wedding mean to the selection process of the new Managing Director of Sehgal Industries?
Sumi ma: No comments on that front as of now.
M: Yes, this is a personal decision and that will be a professional one. It will be best if we keep it separate.
Reporter: Mr. Iyer, do you think your old partner and friend Omkar Kapoor will approve of your choice of groom for his daughter?
Appa: I think...
Reporter: I mean given the family history, are you trying to get rid of your responsibilities?
B: Excuse me? I would advise you to stay within your limits. Whatever Dad did in his personal life is not up for discussion. He was family for me and Mahir, and will continue to remain so. Dad's actions do not define Mahir.
Amma: And as far as our responsibility is concerned, we know that no one in this world will love our daughter more than Mahir will love her. For us our daughter's happiness is of utmost importance.
Reporter: Mr. Iyer you did not answer my question.
B: I would like to answer your question. It does not matter whether my Janvi ma and Omkar papa approve of this relationship. For me and Rehan, Amma, Appa are our parents now and it is their approval that matters. As far as logic goes dead people can neither approve nor oppose anything. From an emotional point of view, if my biological parents left my responsibility to Amma and Appa, then I am sure they knew that whatever decisions Amma, Appa will take for me would be for the best. I am sure even my biological parents will want my happiness, and my haappines is with Mahir. Thank you, now we would like to proceed.
Having given this statement, she stepped back inside that car. Mahir was gazing at her with awe. She never ceased to amaze him. She felt his gaze on her.
B: What?
M: Nothing!
And he quickly gave a hug. When they arrived at the temple, there were quite some people present already praying. When the head priest saw that the Sehgals have come he started to make way for them. Mahir stepped up to him.
M: Namaste! We will wait in the line for taking darshan.
Priest: But sir, how can I make you wait...
M: We are not special in front of god. All these people have been waiting here since long time.
Sumi ma and Amma both had extremely proud expressions on their faces. All of their kids were born in the lap of luxury, they were never denied anything. All the best things in the world were easily available to them, yet they were so humble.
Once the line moved forward, Sumi ma made BeHir take devi ma's blessings and also the priest's blessings. Then they both distributed the clothes and food packets that they had brought to the poor people and beggars sitting outside the temple. After having completed that; they started back.
When they reached home, they had their lunch and went and got ready for the sangeet ceremony. Bella had chosen a matte gold coloured silk lehenga for this occasion with kundan jewellery to go with it. The lehenga was very simple with delicate embroidery and a royal blue coloured velvet choli went with it. The dupatta was also matte gold with delicate Kashmiri embroidery in royal blue thread on it. She decided to keep it simple with hair and make-up. She tied up her hair in a simple bun with a few strands hanging lose, framing her face. A mang tika adorned her hair parting and delicate bindi on her forehead enhanced her beauty. She wore a small nose ring in her nose. Heavy jhumkas with their chains hooked in her hair adorned her ears. She wore a choker and a long necklace around her neck. Golden and blue bangles decorated her wrists. Since dupatta was the highlight of her dress she wanted to keep it visible so she pinned it on her left shoulder, letting it hang loose on a single pin. She looked like some royal princess that day. Mahir had chosen a simple sky blue and pearl coloured sherwani for the sangeet ceremony.
All the three young couples were going to perform that day, together as well as individually. First all the three boys and Bella were going to perform on Mahi ve from Kal Ho Na Ho. Amma, Appa and Sumi ma were sitting ready to see the performance.
Maahi Ve Maahi Ve
That's The Way Maahi Ve
Bella was standing there with her back to the audience and lightly shaking her waist. All the three boys came and started dancing around her.
Tere Maathe Jhumar Damke
Tere Kanno Baali Chamke Hai Re
Maahi Ve
Pratham indicated towards her mang tika and jumkas.
Tere Haatho Kangana Khanke
Tere Pairo Payal Chanke Hai Re
Maahi Ve
Then Mahir came and indicated towards bangles and payal that she was wearing.
Naino Se Bole Rabba Rabba
Mann Mein Dole Rabba Rabba
Amrit Ghole Rabba Rabba
Tu Soniye
Rehan came indicated towards her eyes and then danced with her.
( Jind Maahi Ve Soni Soni Aaja Mahi Ve
Everybody Sing Soni Soni Aaja Mahi Ve )
That's The Way Maahi Ve
All the four of them did the hook step of the song.
Barse Rangini Kaliyan Hai Mehki Bhini Bhini
Baje Mann Mein Halke Halke Shehnai Re
Jitne Hai Taare Aanchal Mein Aa Gaye Sare
Dil Ne Jaise Hi Li Angdayee Re
Bella lip sang the next bit with Kuhu and Suhani holding a stone studded chunri in front of her like a veil or a barrier. Bella twirled and came to Mahir who held her in his arms.
Tu Jo Aayee Sajhke Mehndi Rachke
Chal Bachke Oh Soniye
Rehan and Pratham pulled Kuhu and Suhani towards them and all the six of them danced on the bit of the song.
Dil Kitno Ka Khaye Dhajke Oh Soniye
Jind Maahi Ve ... Aaja Mahi Ve ...
Tere Maathe Jhumar Damke
Tere Kanno Baali Chamke Hai Re
Maahi Ve
Tere Haatho Kangana Khanke
Tere Pairo Payal Chanke Hai Re

By the end of the evening everyone was tired but happy. They all sat around for some more chatting with each other and then had their dinner. Everyone dropped off to sleep early that day as they had to wake up early the next morning. BeHir said good night to each other. They both were aware that it was their last night as only best friends, tomorrow by this time they will be married.

Hey Vrishthi!!! Baby this one is for you!!!!
Initially I thought that including songs would be kind of difficult, but inspiration struck when I was working yesterday and I rewrote this chapter. If this seems a bit crude then please forgive me. It was my first time writing with songs and I had still not gotten the hang of it.After writing the Mahi Ve sequence I realised that my description of dance is really lame and so I avoided it all together for the next songs. Now the upcoming chapters will have some song sequences and I promise they will not be as crude. I could have written this chapter better but I fell short of time as I wanted to post it today itself.I hope you guys enjoy it but save the judgement for the next chapter. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

CHAPTER 18
Everyone woke up bright and early. Panditji had given the mahurat of early afternoon. So everyone began to get ready soon after the breakfast. BeHir were supposed to fast as per the custom, so they ate nothing. When panditji told them about this ritual, Mahir had said that he will fast on behalf of both of them as staying hungry did not suit Bella. Pnaditji had smiled and told him that although it seemed like a punishment to him, that ritual actually symbolized that from that day onwards the bride and the groom were supposed to share everything that came their way. Be it happiness or sorrows, success or failure, comforts or hardships they will have to share. At that, BeHir smiled, they had been sharing everything right from their childhood.
The wedding was to take place in their home itself. The decorators had already the prepared the mandap and had done all the arrangements. BeHir's room was also ready and decorated for their wedding night. Only fresh flower arrangements were remaining, those would be done later in the day. There were a lot of pre-wedding rituals that were yet to be completed. Most of them were to be completed with Bella, so Mahir was told to stay in his room and NOT come out.
The first ritual was Gana Bandhna ritual, wherein the sacred mauli was tied to both of their hands. As this ritual was to be performed on both Bella and Mahir, they were once again made to sit facing away from each other, as they were not supposed to see each other before the wedding. Bella was decked up in a simple baby pink saree for the pre-wedding rituals. Panditji had already come for the ceremony. He tied the sacred mauli around Bella's wrist first and then went and tied one to Mahir's wrist. Even Mahir was dressed in a simple sherwani, he was to wear his wedding attire later on. Mahir was packed off to his room after that.
The next ritual was the Chooda Chadhana ritual. This ritual was to be performed by the bride's maternal uncle, but, since Amma did not have a brother, Rehan and Kuhu were to complete the ritual. Panditji lit the havan and Rehan and Kuhu sat in front of it. Bella was made to sit besides them. Rehan had bought the chooda for Bella, and he gave them to panditji for purification. Panditji purified the chooda with the liquid mixture of milk and rose petals. Then he asked all the elders to bless the chooda. Once that was done, pandiji asked Bella to cover her head and face with a scarf as she was not supposed to see the bangles while they were being slid onto her wrist.
Rehan and Kuhu carefully slid the bangles on her wrist. Everyone else was showering petals on Bella while this was going on. Bella uncovered her face and saw her hands for the first time. She was very fair and the dark henna complimented her skin tone well. The red and ivory chooda contrasted well with her fair skin. When she saw her hands for the first time, she felt a very strong emotion which she couldn't name, and suddenly felt her eyes moisten. She looked up at Amma and saw the even her eyes were moist with emotion.
Chanda Meri Chanda Tujhe Kaise Mein Yeh Samjaoon
Mujhe Lagti Hai Tu Kitni Pyaari Re
Khusiyan Jitni Hai Sab Dhoondh Ke Laoon
Teri Doli Ke Sang Kar Do Sari Re
Even Appa and Rehan looked very emotional. She suddenly felt the moisture from her eyes spill over onto her cheeks. She was bewildered. Why was she crying?
Seeing her cry, even Amma cried a little. Rehan hugged her emotionally. Till that day Bella had only heard of tears of happiness, but she had always scoffed at that concept. Why would anyone cry out of happiness? But that day she felt such powerful feeling of happiness that it compelled her to cry. Sumi ma, Kuhu and Suhani were also very emotional.
She got up from her seat and went and touched Rehan's feet. She had never done that before. Although Rehan was her elder brother, he was more like a friend to her, someone her age. Even he never treated her like his younger sister, never tried to dictate her life decisions, never made her feel that she was immature. He always made her feel like an equal. But that day she felt compelled to touch his feet, not because it was a ritual but she genuinely felt like doing it. Kuhu was years younger than her, but she was her elder brother's wife, so technically, relationship wise she was elder than Bella. So Bella also touched her feet. When Kuhu began to protest, Amma told her it was her right.
Amma: Kuhu, relationship wise you are elder to Bella, her elder brother's wife. It is her duty and your right. Let her do it.
Pratham: Enjoy it while you can. You will not get a chance like this ever again.
Bella smiled at this. She went and touched all the elder's feet. When she came back and sat down at her place, Rehan and Kuhu gifted her the wedding dress. This was a surprise for Bella. For the past week, ever since the engagement, Kuhu had worked for day and night, using whatever spare time she could get to design a beautiful pestle sea green coloured lehenga for her. She had asked her seamstress and the craftsmen to work overnight to complete the delicate and intricately embroidered set on time. She knew Bella did not like the usual glittery wedding attires and hence she had chosen this pestle hue. She had also created a sherwani for Mahir in similar shade.
Bella looked at her in surprise.
B: What is this Kuhu? This is not the one you showed me.
K: I made this especially for you. How could I let my best friend wear something off the shelf? I hope you like it.
B: Like it? I love it. This is so beautiful Kuhu. Did Rehan know about this?
R: Yes I knew about this. But we wanted it to be surprise for you.
Bella went and emotionally hugged both of them.
Next ceremony was the Kalide ceremony. Here Kuhu and Suhani both tied the umbrella shaped kalide to Bella's chooda. Since none of them were unmarried, the next part of the ritual had to be skipped. During Kuhu's Kalide ceremony, she had purposely shaken her chooda over Bella's head and a part of kalide had fallen on Bella's head. Everyone had teased her that she would be the next to get married. And Bella had very confidently told them that she was never going to marry. Bella remembered that and she almost laughed out aloud.
They had already conducted the haldi ceremony before hand as they wanted to have a haldi fight, so a symbolic haldi ceremony was once again conducted. Mahir was once again called back downstairs, and haldi paste was applied to their faces only. Then Mahir was told to wash his face and then made to sit in a huge vessel and Suhani, being his sister-in-law poured a pot full of water on his head. He was then told to take a shower and get ready in the wedding attire.
Bella did want to make as spectacle of herself by going out of the house for the Ghara Ghardoli ritual. She insisted that since she had already taken the kuldevi's blessings the day before, there was no need to renew the blessings. So after she had washed her face, she was taken to the in-house mandir where Amma and Sumi ma conducted worship on a daily basis. Even she was made to sit in huge shallow vessel and a pot full of holy water was poured on her head. After that she prayed to the god for his blessings and then proceeded towards her room to take a proper shower.
By that time Mahir was dressed and ready for the next set of rituals. He came downstairs for the Sehrabandi ritual. He was made to stand in the in-house mandir and panditji performed a small pooja to ward off the evil eye. Since they did not have to far and Mahir had strictly said no to a horse, the Ghodi Chadhna ritual was not going to take place. Suhani made him wear surma to ward off the evil eye. Then panditji did pooja with the Sehra which Mahir was supposed to wear. Since Andy was absent, Sumi ma stepped forward to make him wear the sehra. Panditji tried to protest saying that this ritual was supposed to be completed only by a male member, and in absence of the father, brother could do it. But Mahir very firmly said no it.
M: My mom has raised me without any support from my father. It is her right to do what he was supposed to do.
Pratham: He is right panditji. Let Sumi mausi do it.
Sumi ma made Mahir wear the sehra and blessed him when he touched her feet. Sumi ma had already sent off Amma to help Bella get ready.
While Mahir was being readied for the wedding, Bella was also getting ready. She had strictly refused to hire any professional make-up artist for the make-up. She hated the over the top gaudy make-up looks that most brides sported. She wanted to handle her make-up herself. She was already wearing the dress designed by Kuhu when Amma entered her room.
B: Amma, can you please tie the dori? I can't reach it.
Amma: Yes of course dear.
B: Where's Sumi ma?
Amma: She's completing some rituals with Mahir. Don't worry, she will be here shortly.
B: Okay.
By that time Amma had tied the dori and was proceeding towards the dupatta when Sumi ma entered the room.
Sumi ma: I will handle the dupatta, Gayatri, you go and get the jasmine garlands for her hair.
B: Ma, can't Mahir come and do my hair?
Sumi ma: NO.
B: But ma...
Amma: I know Bella you are really eager to see Mahir, but he can't come here.
Sumi ma: Yes I will do your hair.
Bella wanted a simple bun which will be easy to manage and be elegant yet beautiful. So Sumi ma parted her hair right in the middle and pinned the side sections of her hair out of the way. Then she pulled the rest of her hair into a low ponytail and then tied it up in a bun. Then she unpinned both the side sections and twisted them around the bun and secured it with bobby pins. She had purposely left a few bits of hair loose. She then lightly curled these bits of hair and left them to loosely frame her face. Once that was done Amma came with the garlands. She helped Sumi ma pin those garlands in place. They also placed a diamond encrusted comb in Bella's hair.
Bella then got down to do her make-up, while Sumi ma and Amma went and got ready. She had decided to keep her make-up simple and elegant. When Amma and Sumi ma came back Bella was ready.
Then they both carefully adorned Bella with pearl and diamond jewellery. They carefully pined the mang tika in Bella's hair parting. They also made her wear two necklaces of different lengths and a delicate choker. Amma made her wear anklets which belonged to Janvi. Those were the anklets which Janvi had worn for her wedding with Omkar. They also made her wear a nose ring and hooked the other end of the nose ring's chain in Bella's hair. Once that was done Sumi ma pleated one end of the dupatta and pinned it over one shoulder. She then tied a kamarbandh around Bella's waist to secure it in one place. She then placed the one end over her head and pinned it in place.
Sumi ma: Bella, I must leave now. I will see you at the mandap. Bye.
B: Bye ma.
Saying this Sumi ma went out of the room. Amma realised that Bella had forgotten to wear a bindi. She took a delicate diamond stud like bindi and placed it on Bella's forehead. She took Bella to Janvi and Omkar's photographs and told her to seek their blessings. Once that was done they came back to Bella's room and Amma made Bella sit and have some water. She then left the room to look after other arrangements.
Hawa ke jhonke aaj mausamon se rooth gaye
Gulon ki shokhiyaan jo bhanwre aake loot gaye
Badal rahi hai aaj zindagi ki chaal zara
Issi bahaane kyun naa main bhi dil ka haal zara
Sanwaar loon haaye sawaar loon
Bella looked at herself in the full length mirror. She took a calming breathe. This is it Bella. You are marrying your best friend. she thought. She thought she looked perfect. The bride was ready for her wedding.
