Himesh, India's next big singer-actor? EnlargeHimesh Reshamiya will make his acting debut with Aap Ka Suroor-the movie.

Maverick music composer and singer Himesh Reshammiya's debut film Aap Kaa Surroor has done phenomenal business in India, sparking speculations that he might become a successful singer-actor that Bollywood has been deprived of for decades.

Bollywood produced its first big singer-actor when K.L. Saigal stepped into the industry, acted in around 30 films and enthralled masses with his acclaimed flicks like Devdas and Parwana. After him, it was Talat Mahmood who tried his luck in acting but was greeted with mixed response. Talat did 13 films.

Bollywood's best singer-actor was Kishore Kumar, who galloped to stardom not only with his voice but also with his acting. Kishore Kumar starred in around 80 films and was appreciated by the masses for his performance in movies like Half Ticket, Shreeman Funtoosh and Padosan.

After Kishore Kumar, many renowned singers like Sonu Nigam, Kumar Sanu, Shaan and others tried their hands at acting but met with disastrous box-office results.

Himesh's film, on the contrary, has landed a hit by collecting over Rs.90 million in the domestic box office and around Rs.8.1 million in cash counters in Britain.

Bollywood scholars feel star singers have failed to become acting sensations over the years because modern audiences wanted to see trained actors doing the job rather than spend money to see just anyone acting. After Kishore Kumar, many renowned singers like Sonu Nigam, Kumar Sanu, Shaan and others tried their hands at acting but met with disastrous box-office results
"In the past people had to be singers to act in movies due to technological constraints," said Derek Bose, a veteran film scholar. "When Saigal was acting, everyone had to be a singer-actor because there was no scope for dubbing or playback like today. Among these bunch of people, Saigal was the best no doubt.

"Then if you talk about the others like Kishore (Kumar) and Lata, they came to Bollywood to act but ended up becoming singers. Earlier, it was easy for a singer to become an actor because unlike today, the audiences were compromising and forgiving.

"But now with people watching quality acting, it's very difficult for an untrained person to make it big in the industry because all actors, even mediocre ones, have gone through some training. So singers have not been able to match up to them over the years," Bose noted.

Analysts feel that Bollywood can expect Himesh to emerge as a good singer-actor but add that his consistency of landing hits is still to be tested.

"Himesh's real test begins now. Though he has done well in his debut, it should be remembered that it was backed by his close set of people," said Suleman Mobhani, co-founder of IndiaFm, a Bollywood trade website.

"It is to be seen whether other producers and directors approach him with roles," he said.

"One thing is for sure - Himesh is loved by the masses but it will be interesting to see how he acts in multiple star cast films and roles that are more challenging. Also, he should act in multiple genres like comedies to prove how versatile he is. He has got what it takes to become successful."

All geared up for a hit
16 Jul 2007, 0000 hrs IST,JAYEETA GANGULY Times News Network

His nasal tone might not find favour with all and sundry but that doesn't deter Himesh Reshammiya numbers from being hot favourites with autowallahs.
His songs have been making them go Jhoom Jhoom for some years now. His surroor makes them cry out Aap Ki Kashish , each time they start their autos. And just in case, you do not quite relate to their Arman, then that's just too bad. Himeshbhai ke songs and the auto ride come as a package deal and it is hard to ignore them both! On June 29, we got to witness another side to this Himesh Junoon as we went to watch the 'real' movie, Aap Kaa Surroor , at a movie theatre located at Esplanade. And in the crowd we found lots of auto drivers who tirelessly ferry us from Chandni Chowk to Park Circus and vice versa day in and day out.

Lights, camera and action! The movie starts and a close shot of his cap was enough to make them break into seetis . Mallika Sherawat and her bare legs be damned! When the camera zooms in on Himesh's face, you get to hear, 'Himeshbhai , Jhalak dikha diya' and in the end when he gets the girl and bashes the bad man, you are left wondering who's triumph was it eitherways - HR's or the auto drivers' .

So, what makes Himesh so special in their eyes? "We identify with Himesh. Pata nahi kyon, lekin aapna banda lagta hain. He has struggled to be where he is. I love his voice. Naak se gata hain toh kya hua? Even I sound nasal when I hit the high notes," says Md Raja, an auto driver. Adds his friend Md Raju, "Himesh looks great. His topi and long coat make him look like a rockstar. Unko abhi sirf movies hi karni chahiye. Woh action film bhi karengey toh achha lagega."

The drivers are also over the moon with the way Himesh has acknowledged their contribution in making him a brand. "Did you see how in the end three auto rickshawallahs rescue him from the clutches of the German police?" asks an excited Babu. Yes, we did and realised that when it comes to forming a successful mutual admiration society, Tere Naam is just enough - logic and laws can take a backseat more than once!

Himesh Reshammiya goes selective
By MIO Team
Jul 17, 2007, 07:47

Himesh Reshammiya was a rock star when he was a composer-singer! He has turned superstar post his first film 'Aap Ka Suroor' which has received overwhelming response. The shining career of Himesh has become more glittery post his stint of successful acting debut. Though there were second thoughts about his film prior to release he proved the detractors wrong with his talent. Reshammiya is now seriously considering his acting career and he is taking his time to do his next film and will be doing only three films in a year.

Himesh focus on his acting career has made music take backstage in his life. He has decided that he'll compose for very selective films and mostly his own films in future. He is considering composing music for his own films only. But not disappointing his fans he has decided to cut a non-film music album in between. There are many offers in the pipeline but he wants do only the best of the projects.

'I've made an impact' Hannisikaa
18 Jul 2007, 0000 hrs IST,PRIYANKA TIWARI ,TNN

Says a confident Hannsikaa Motwani, the 19-something who has made her film de but opposite Himesh Reshammiya in Aap Ka Suroor. KT digs deeper to get the details...
She may be a fresh entrant in Bollywood, but her discreet , politically correct conduct reveals that she's a pro at the balancing act. Hansika... oops! Hannsikaa Motwani (that's how she's spelling her name now by the way), who plays the lead opposite Himesh Reshamiya in Aap Ka Suroor is extremely happy with her debut choice and excited about her future.

Hannsikaa began her career as a child artiste with tele-serials Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand, Shaka Laka Boom Boom and Kya Masti Kya Dhoom and later ventured into films playing non-descript roles in Koi Mil Gaya, Escape from Taliban and Hum Kaun Hai. Her role in Jaago however won her critical acclaim.

"As a heroine, my first film was Puri Jagannadh's Telugu film, Desamuduru opposite Allu Arjun. But in Bollywood Aap Ka Suroor is my first film," she informs. So what was working with the single, but not ready to mingle, Himesh Reshammiya like? "Himesh is a very sweet person. He used to sing songs on the sets and was very cooperative with the team members," she reveals. But the soon-to-be 20 (in August) lass has been wise enough to give equal importance to her studies. "I can't afford to compromise on my studies at any cost, because in the long run nothing proves as valuable as education," opines the Commerce under-graduate at the Poddar International School.

"As a child artiste, my studies were often disturbed due to work commitments, so I decided to give work a break for four-five years before making a comeback. However, I had never thought that I would comeback with a film in Bollywood!" she shares, while adding that she didn't give any screen test for Aap Ka Suroor. "Prashant Chaddha, the director, spotted me and called me for auditions where I fortunately bagged the role." But surely it cannot be dismissed as sheer luck, after all, she has the distinction of having worked with the biggies - Hrithik Roshan in Koi Mila Gaya and SRK in a commercial! Predictably, she's bid adieu to television, hasn't she? "I have loved acting in both television and cinema. But as of now, I will be concentrating only on films," she confirms.

On a lighter note, may we know who advised her to spell her name thus? "Himesh!" comes the unexpected response. "He advised me to change my name's spelling according to numerology. And I think it worked for my debut film. I've made an impact as an actress and have offers coming my way," she adds.

Considering her current popularity, are there any interesting, er.. proposals coming her way too? "I'd rather not talk about this," she shrugs. Do we take that as a yes, miss?

A K S - Not just an opening weekend wonder!

When AAP KAA SURROOR was gearing up for release, not many were giving it a chance to stay on at the theaters for beyond a week. The tune changed when the film opened to house full boards and the reverse trend began with the opening being compared to the likes of D2, 'Krrish' or even 'Sivaji'. Well, no doubt both were extreme cases with none being practical enough.

Nevertheless, the movie came and made money once the opening weekend was through. Speculations were being made that the hit status of the movie was primarily due to a bumper opening and the film would eventually go downhill from thereon.

Well, as it has turned out, yet again it has been plain speculation at work with reality being completely different. The reason being that after making a healthy 10 crore plus in its first week, the film has stayed on considerably well even in the second week with a fall that just matches the industry standard of 50%.

Now that's commendable because the biggest of films fall by around 50% in their second week and for a film like AAP KAA SURROOR to be following the similar trend, it is nothing short of an achievement.

In its second week, AKS has made not less than 5 crores which makes it a 15 crore plus total for the film in 2 weeks flat. How far will the film go from here? Well, even an inch ahead would only keep the distributors grinning from ear to ear.

Yes, Himesh Reshammiya can now add one more specialty in his profile – 'Acting'. This is certainly not the last that one has seen of him in the theaters!

Salman Khan on not inheriting his father's taste in women, his eccentricities and more

Perhaps no one but Salman Khan manages to look hot even when he has a bad cold. In spite of the constant sniffing and throat clearing, the smiles are abundant too. He even jokes to say, "If I sing now, I will sound like Himesh Reshammiya…".

report continued below Latest News on DNAINDIA.com
•Six storeyed building collapses in Mumbai more
•Rashtrapati Bhawan has 700,000 cr fortunes more
•1993 blasts: 3 get death sentence more
more
However, he has a great opinion about his once-upon-a-time friend Himesh. "It's a wonder how he has acted through the film in a cap. That man started off as a TV producer and look at him today. If he had continued doing TV, he would have given Ektaa Kapoor stiff competition. Someone who started with one crore now doesn't talk about anything less than 100 hundred crores now! Isn't that amazing?" he asks.

Salman has two films up for release — 'Marigold' and 'Partner'. In 'Marigold' he plays a choreographer. Ask him if he has improved his dancing skills for the film and he replies with mock anger, "I can dance better than Hrithik Roshan. It's just that I don't display my talents because I want the audience to match their steps with me." And then, with a smile he says, "Actually as a dancer, you can place me somewhere between Ajay Devgan and Hrithik Roshan."

Talking about 'Marigold', he says, "Salman Khan is only a big star in India. I have done this film which will be shown everywhere in USA, UK for my NRI fans' foreign pals."

Dhruti I think that article yday was a false alarm...check this out: - check the website 2see the pic 4sum reason its not posting here! he actually shook the guys glasses!

When Salman shook me!

Reportage: Syed Firdaus Ashraf This is one assignment I won't forget in a long, long time.

But then, Salman Khan [Images] is very unpredictable.

It all began when I asked the star why he was upset with his protege, Himesh Reshammiya, and why he hadn't met Himesh after Aap Kaa Surroor, the singer's debut movie, was released last month.

Salman, the gossipwallahs had insisted, was upset with Himesh after the singer-composer refused to score music for the actor's films and instead launched his career as an actor.

I couldn't believe what Salman did next.

He bent low, shook my spectacles, saying, "I have no problems with Himesh."

He gave my spectacles another shake, insisting, "Absolutely no problem with Himesh."

Maybe I shouldn't have been so surprised. After all, Salman is known for his antics with reporters.

But it didn't end there. I asked him about global warming as he seemed to be promoting Hollywood actress Sienna Miller [Images] -- who was also present at the event -- and Amitabh Bachchan's [Images] film Global Cool, which is meant to spread awareness of global warming.

"I have been told that if you don't take care of global warming, then in 20 years, Mumbai won't exist," Salman said, with all the authority of an R K Pachauri.

"Ice glaciers are melting and the sea level is rising. I live next to the sea, at Bandra's Bandstand. So I will be the first to go!"

He paused.

"Plant trees and save planet earth," he declared.

The occasion for the star's interaction with the media was the premiere of his new film Partner, hosted for 700 underprivileged children at the upmarket Infiniti Mall in suburban Andheri, Mumbai.

On the David Dhawan-directed film, Salman would only describe it in three words: "Comedy. Comedy. Comedy." Go watch it, the star, who is clearly one of a kind, added.
