After his film got a bumper opening at the box office, Himesh Reshammiya has decided to reduce his singing assignments and concentrate on his acting career.

"I have got a lot of offers from different producers and I am considering this (acting) option at this stage," Himesh said.

Asked whether it means goodbye to singing and music composition, he answered, "It is not a total goodbye. I am going to reduce my singing and music composition assignments. I will concentrate on acting now."

Himesh became famous overnight when the music of Aashiq Banaya Aapne released in 2005. After that, there was no looking back. He gave the film industry hit after hit, despite critics labelling his voice 'nasal.'

Soon, Himesh decided it was time to test his skills as an actor. His childhood friend Prashant Chadha gave Himesh an image, and even directed him in Aap Kaa Surroor: The Moviee: The Real Luv Story.

In an interview to rediff.com, Himesh claimed that if his film would be a hit, he would consider doing a sequel. That is already in the scripting stage now.

"I have two films in mind with Himesh at this juncture," Prashant says. "The first one will be a sequel to Aap Kaa Surroor. I still have to write the other.

"All of us are very tired after the hard work we did on Aap Kaa Surroor," Prashant continued. "Himesh and our team are going for a week-long holiday to Goa [Images] to celebrate our success. When we return, we will go ahead with our strategy."

Himesh to continue acting

By Taran Adarsh, July 3, 2007 - 09:10 IST

Now that AAP KAA SURROOR has released, people are curious to know whether Himesh Reshammiya would continue acting or get back to what he's best at -- scoring music for films? "Had AAP KAA SURROOR failed at the ticket window, I would've gone back to composing music. But now that the verdict is out, I've decided to pursue acting," Himesh tells me.

The music composer turned singer turned actor is already going ahead with AAP KAA SURROOR 2, the sequel to the first part. Also, Himesh would take up acting assignments offered by independent production houses. "The offers have started pouring in. But I don't intend doing 10/11 films every year. At the most two films per year would suffice," he divulges his plan of action.

Meanwhile, Himesh is least perturbed by the talk that a section of the paying public don't rate his acting skills too highly. "They are entitled to their opinion. I respect that. But I would strive hard to prove myself. I am ready to face challenges. With the blessings of my parents and the Almighty, I've come this far. I'd scale greater heights if they continue to bless me," he states with utmost humility.

A DELIGHTFUL MUSICAL FANFARE BUT UNIMPRESSIVE

By Satyajit

Critic's I-view
click for larger view

'Aap Ka Surror' or "Surror ka Gurror"! Labeled as a musical tornado in 2006, the storm created in the music charts by this bearded and capped composer-turned-singer made history of kind that resulted in glory coupled with controversies. The name of Himesh Reshammiya became the keyword in musical business that proved miracle for creating tremendous openings for films. His slick and stylish music videos became the promotional soundtracks that generated hype and hoopla for the film and finally his album "Aap Ka Surror" entered the marquee with huge thump. The sporadic events proved so consequential that the acting proved the next big phase and predictable landmark in his brand building. The euphoria proved groundbreaking and trendsetting that the team of Reshammiya-Sameer-Chadha is back to rock the world.

If you believe in the gloss, glitz of showbiz then its better that you don't wear your thinking cap to view 'Aap Ka Surror'. Prashant Chaddha, the director and the creative head for all Himesh Reshammiya music videos, promises "masala" entertainer but no logics are to be applied. Chadha's "larger than life" perception and execution has landed him in the unexplored exotic locations of Germany with great visual experiences. The film's gloss, slick promotion and chartbusting music should be treated as its attribute while scripting takes a backseat.

click for larger view

The film starts with a dead body of TV journo Nadia Merchant found in a remote area, somewhere in the dense forests of Germany. Himesh Reshammiya alias HR (Himesh Reshammiya) is a pop icon and visits Germany with his friend Shravan for concert shows. HR is arrested after concert for murdering television journalist who operates a "sting operation". HR is arrested and is put behind the bars and the story unravels into flashback. During a concert in Germany, HR meets the event organizer Khurana (Darshan Jariwala) and his partner Ruby James (Mallika Sherawat). He also meets event planner Ria (Hansika Motwani) in a tiff with a burglar at his place and it's love at first sight for him. Love blossoms between them but still there are hurdles to be crossed. After initial hesitation and resentment, Hansika's father (Sachin Khedekar) approves of this match. Circumstances take a turn ; HR is arrested when life shapes well for him. He asks Ruby James, a shrewd and competent lawyer, to bail him out. Since Ruby is in love with HR, she resents his sensuous overtures towards Ria. He escapes from his prison cell after taking the murdered TV journalist's father Feroze Merchant (Raj Babbar) as captive in his car. He has to find the actual culprit in one single day, or else his sweetheart will be married off to someone else. The film ends on a preposterous ending that it decimates all the spirited musical work of the film. click for larger view

If the film's first half is highly entertaining (flashy soundtracks, exotic locations, romance, and comedy) then the second half rests on its thin plot and feeble execution. Prashant Chaddha is a slick and trendy video director-turned-film director but has a limitation as competent storyteller. Himesh Reshammiya may not be any star material but his supreme pop icon image makes him a saleable commodity. His biggest strength lies in his confidence to perform and apt body language that lift the spirits of the film. As compared to his musical contemporaries (Sonu Nigam and Kumar Sanu), he proves to be the most competent and by far the most successful singer-turned-actor.

click for larger view

'Aap Ka Surror's biggest asset lies in its technically brilliant musical soundtracks that enthrall senses in its glossy depiction. Feel the rhythmic impulse of feverish concert show in "Assasalam Valeekum", the mushy romance in "Tera Mera Milna" and festive thump in "Jhooth Nahin Bolna". The nostalgic "Tere Bina" and expressively painful "Tanhaiyaan" are the added listening treats that are well executed on the silver screen. It's musical mania all the way and its biggest commercial asset. The biggest surprise lies in its acting department and the film lives up to its expectation in every frame. Himesh Reshammiya's screen presence is the biggest surprise. His expressive dialogue delivery with optimum facial and body language shows acting potential in him. The film proves that he is no novice and can handle emotional scenes with lan. Hansika Motwani's striking screen debut in Hindi cinema works in tandem with Himesh's impressive acting skills. She has matured from child artiste ('Koi Mil Gaya') to female main lead with supreme confidence.

click for larger view

Shravan, the young actor who started off with dud 'Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye' makes an effective screen presence with this film. After Sharman Joshi and Kunal Kapoor, he comes out as another underdog who has flair for good acting and impressive comical timing. The first half completely belongs to his and Himesh Reshammiya's friendly chemistry that triggers loads of laughter and moments of amusement in the film.

click for larger view

Mallika Sherawat, the sensuous "Murder" babe, plays another impressive performance of sexy lawyer who befriends a fugitive for justice. Her sensuous dancing in the soundtracks "Mehbooba" and "Dillagi" (earlier "Ya Ali" in music CD's) is a big crowd puller.

click for larger view

Darshan Jhaveri, a trusted theatre artiste, gets first major screen appearance as the main villain. He gets on the top occasionally with his eccentric and unusual on-screen characterization. Raj Babbar is completely wasted in the role of a desolated father of slain TV journalist.

click for larger view

Now the minuses! Don't expect anything innovative or ground breaking as filmmaker has never promises anything in its promos. 'Aap Ka Surror' is contemporary romantic murder mystery conceived in 80's style of an action potboiler. The stereotyped romance of rich and poor, the fight between good and evil and feebly executed climax are its major drawbacks. The romantic track between Himesh Reshammiya and Hansika Motwani is entertaining and gripping in the film's first half. The situational hilarious moments are well planted but when the narration contorts to murder mystery track, it disappoints. After giving a promising and gripping start to the film, Prashant Chadha along with writer Vibha Singh, falters miserably while solving the murder mystery. The second half has many instances where the preposterous narration in the film kills the show.

Amateurishly conceived "auto-rickshaw" sequence where Reshammiya is freed from the police arrest is coarsely planted. The final scene where villain (Darshan Jhaveri) confesses his murder in front of a big TV screen is a major let down. Hansika Motwani along with his father (Sachin Khedkar) monitoring Reshammiya's innocence on TV screen and deciding to quit from arranged marriage is another sore thumb in the script. In an era of multiplexes, how can you expect a business magnate (Darshan Jhaveri) murdering a TV journalist by wearing facial mask of pop icon (Himesh Reshammiya) ? If filmmakers have big plans of launching Himesh Reshammiya as screen god then they should have worked on better themes or plots. Why do they come with a messy and absurd script?

'Aap Ka Surror' works more as a mass entertainer made in the format of musical entertainer. If the film was conceived as light-hearted romantic-cum-comical entertainer then it would have had more takers as the murder mystery plot has ruined its credentials. The bankable pop icon image of Himesh Reshammiya, aggressive promotion, high production value and melodious music will draw huge crowds during the first weekend. Now, its between "style" or "substance" that viewers have to choose as it lacks major ingredients of good scripting though it entertains with slick gloss and upbeat music.

Overall, Himesh Reshammiya's debut performance as an actor has proved credible but not groundbreaking as his singing or composing abilities do. The film promises impressive openings in multiplexes but thereafter its prospects will depend on "good" word of publicity.

In a nutshell, "Surror" ka "Gurror" is a delightful musical fanfare but unimpressive entertainer!

Ajmer, Jun 30: Bollywood singer-composer Himesh Reshammiya can rest easy now. One of the Khadims or caretakers of the revered Sufi shrine of Khawaja Moinuddin Chisti here has owned up responsibility for the actor camouflaging himself in a burqa (woman's veil) during his visit that triggered angry reactions from the shrine authorities.

Ahmed Raza, a shrine official, told IANS: "The Khadim who brought Himesh Reshammiya here informed us in writing that the incident was his fault and Himesh is not responsible for anything."

"We had asked the Khadim to tell us how the news of Reshammiya visiting the dargah leaked and why was he brought in disguise, which hurt the religious feelings of some," he said.

According to him, the Khadim while accepting his mistake also assured that this kind of incident would not be repeated. "We have thus decided to close the matter," Raza said.

The controversy over the singer-actor surfaced when cameramen caught him in a burqa, with the face veil lifted, during a visit to the shrine on Tuesday night. The singer was on a visit to the dargah to seek blessings ahead of the release of his debut film "Aap Ka Surroor" Friday.

While some members of Anjuman, the organisation of Khadims, had termed it as disrespect to the shrine, the dargah committee was planning to seek legal advice on the matter.

"The burqa is a dress for women and it is no way for a man to visit the dargah in such a manner," an official of the Anjuman had said. The singer had also apologised to the shrine authorities through a private television channel.

DEVIL'S ADVOCATE: Men in Black

Himesh Reshammiya is a most misunderstood man. All he was doing in Ajmer perhaps, was to popularise a new attire for Indian males. And yet, we went after him. But when you think of it, isn't it a great idea to make burkha compulsory for Indian men? For one, it would be a great leveller. One would no longer have to be envious of Shahrukh Khan's great looks! Nor would my daughter bar me from visiting her school. She did it because she didn't want the good impression created by her charming mom on her classmates to be spoilt by her father who, as far as physical beauty goes, faces competition from the Rajasthani camel. Burkha will save the Indian men all the expense on facials, hair removal, and fairness creams.

What about the loss to the cosmetic industry? Well, they can always diversify into making burkhas. In fact, it would give a thrust to the textile and garment industry. Also, Indian fashion designers, who are weary of getting inspired by their Italian and French counterparts, will get a truly original item to work upon and showcase their creativity.

Burkha will be a boon for our cricketers. On returning from a pathetic tour abroad, they can breeze through the
arrival lounge of airport with heads held high. And even if the impossible happens i.e., they win a match, the captain won't have to remove and wave his shirt in the air. Removing the burkha would suffice. Ditto for Salman Khan in films.

Burkha would have saved the BCCI all the trouble and embarrassment of chasing foreign coaches. With it as protection, even the most reluctant of them would have readily accepted the thankless job. Burkha is so convenient, so elegant that as long as one is in it, one need not worry even if one is wearing dreary garb under it. Needless to say a compulsory burkha would also reduce security threat to male VVIPs. But how would you tell cops like me from the other males on the street? Elementary! Let them wear khaki burkhas!

'I will reveal why I wear a cap'

Hansika Motwani, Himesh Reshammiya in Aap Ka Surroor

July 04, 2007

Himesh Reshammiya is on cloud nine.

After K L Saigal and Kishore Kumar, Himesh has become the only singer who has become a hit at the box office.

Over the years, many singers tried to become actors, but most failed miserably with audiences rejecting them outright.

Meanwhile, Himesh's Aap Kaa Surroor: The Movie: The Real Luv Story has had the year's biggest box office opening --matching, in some centers, last year's biggest hits Dhoom: 2 and Krrish [Images].

Himesh has managed to create a cult fan following over the last two years, and it is his fans who have made the difference to AKS's box office fate.

When Chief Correspondent Syed Firdaus Ashraf caught up with Himesh, he was all praise for his fans, saying they are the ones who made him what he is today.

In the interview, Himesh speaks about his future plans, the sequel and his success.

Did you ever expect your film Aap Kaa Surroor to become such a big hit?

I was praying that it becomes a hit. It was my mother's (Madhu Reshammiya) birthday on (the release date) June 29, and I had immense faith in my fans. They are the reason behind the success story of Himesh Reshammiya.

When you look back what you think worked for the film?

I think the blessings of God and my mother have helped the film to become a success. I always believe that it is destiny and divine intervention that are with me. The film got the biggest opening of 2007, and it has sustained at the box office this week.

What is the best compliment you got for the film so far?

The best compliment I got was that while critics didn't agree to it, my fans said that I am a better actor than a music director and a singer. This is the best compliment I got, and I was shocked.

Do you believe yourself that you are a better actor than music director or singer?

I do everything from my heart. I cannot compare what I am better in. I cannot judge that.

Were you hurt when critics slammed your acting attempt?

I will say critics have the right to say what they want. They did not even spare a great film like Sholay [Images] and Hum Aapke Hai Koun...!. So, I am not shocked at critics ripping my film. One percent of people are always against me -- as I have always said -- but 99 percent people are always with me. Inshallah, (by the grace of God) I will win that one percent over too, one day.

Didn't you feel you needed to loosen up, as you were too stiff as an actor?

I will try to rectify if some critics feel, but my fans have loved me. It is the same way like my songs. Critics said I am nasal, but my fans made me a hit. So I will not stop singing if critics don't like me.

Don't you get bothered about critics?

I will not say I was not bothered. A critic's review does matter, but you know finally, it is a critical review while on the other hand, the film had a commercial success. If you see my first video song Aashiq Banaya Aapne, I won the award but critics said I was nasal. When I composed music for Banaras, critics appreciated the music but unfortunately, it did not do well commercially.

Do you believe that you have become hero of masses and not of classes?

The opening in multiplexes too was big. I wouldn't agree with that statement.

What is the craziest thing your fans have done?

In every show, youngsters have worn caps. This gesture touched me.

Do you believe you have cultivated a massive fan-base which has led to the film being a hit, like Rajnikanth [Images] for Sivaji?

Nobody can come close to Rajnikanth, but my fan-base has made Aap Kaa Surroor a hit. I am grateful to my fans.

In your film, you were serious because of the unfortunate death of your brother due to brain haemorrhage. But I'm sure your fans are dying to know the secret of the cap. Why do you wear the cap all the time?

You will get the answer in my sequel to Aap Kaa Surroor. I will reveal to the audience why I wear a cap in the film in the sequel.

Are other producers approaching you to act in their film?

Yes, but it is too early to talk about it.

Do you think you will be isolated in the industry by becoming a hero?

I am not competing with anybody in the industry. So this question does not arise.

Is everything okay with Salman Khan [Images]? It is rumoured that you have fallen out with your mentor.

No, it is not true. Salmanbhai blessed me when I met him some 45 days ago. I met him in Nagpur, and he is supporting me.

Why didn't you score music in his latest film, Partner, with Govinda [Images]?

I stopped making music long back. I quit music for 16 films. Namastey London [Images] and Red were my last projects.

So you won't score music even if Karan Johar [Images] offers you a film?

I am a huge fan of Yash Chopra [Images], Karan Johar, Farah Khan, Sooraj Barjatya or Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Aditya Chopra [Images]. They are great legends. I would never say no to them if they offer me work. That is, if at all, they offer me work.

What happens to your career as music director and singer?

My career graph has turned now. I will become very exclusive. I will do only three films a year.

Don't you think that you will distance yourself from fans if you remain out of circulation for long?

No. Three films means 18 songs. I will be doing a complete package of acting, music and singing.

If your album comes after six months, don't you think you will fade from your fans' memories?

No, I don't think so. I did my last album in September 2006, and after five months, Red was released. Still, it became a hit.

Do you think there is a certain lobby that is working against you?

I don't think so, but I feel that this is the first time in the industry, a television producer turned music director and singer became a hero. If someone follows my footsteps, that person will be accepted immediately.

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

I want to do good quality work. I want to be in touch with my fans.
