Jan 1st is actress Shakila's birth anniversary. I was just reading up about her and got to know she was from the Royal family in Afghanistan. Her mother and paternal grandparents were killed in royal feud and her father escaped with the children to Bombay. Soon after she lost her father too and the family was in dire straits. Mehboob Khan was a family friend and he helped Shakila get a role in films. She started with a small role in Dastaan (1949), then did several small movies before getting noticed in Aar Paar. Unfortunately she got typecast in B- Grade movies. Shakila's sister, Noor also acted for a while before meeting and marrying Johnny Walker. Her later life was tragic too.. her marriage failed and then she remarried but lost her daughter to suicide smiley19.

Some of Shakila's most enduring songs that are personal favorites:

Hoon abhi main jawan

Film: Aar paar (1954)

Music: O.P. Nayyar

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singer: Geeta Dutt

Aankhon hee aankhon mein

Film: C.I.D. (1956)

Music: O.P. Nayyar

Lyrics: Jaan Nisar Akhtar

Singers: Geeta Dutt & Mohammed Rafi

Humse na poocho

IMO, Shakila is one of the most beautiful bollywood actress I have seen. I saw her first time in guru Dutt's Aar Paar ans liked her instantly.

You are right, she was from an Afghan royal family.

About the youtube videos you have posted, Aar-Paar was released in 1954, it's been 70 years since the film has released, so the movie is in public domain, I don't know how Ultra is claiming copyright to Aar-Paar film and it's songs and disallowing embedding.

Shakila was an Afghan royalty who acted in Bollywood films and had some measure of success, I think she did films till 1960s and then disappeared. She was in Guru Dutt's Aar-Paar.
