As the temperature rises in the United States, Pride Month approaches, serving as a time to honor LGBTQ communities, promote queer joy, and advocate for rights that are currently under attack.

Notably, New York hosts the country's largest pride parades each year, with the 2019 World Pride event attracting approximately 5 million attendees to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall uprising, a historic milestone for the global LGBTQ movement.

Here is a glimpse of some notable Pride celebrations and their corresponding dates and themes:

Provincetown, MA: June 2-4

Washington, D.C.: June 10, featuring the 2023 theme "Peace, Love Revolution."

Los Angeles: June 11 (parade) and June 9-10 (LA Pride Festival), embracing the 2023 theme "All Out With Pride."

Chicago: June 25 (Parade), June 17-18 (Chicago Pride Fest)

Today, Pride Month represents an opportunity for visibility and community. In addition to celebrating LGBTQ love and joy, it serves as a platform to address important policy issues and resources required by the community. In 2021, NYC Pride made headlines by prohibiting law enforcement presence at Pride events until 2025 due to escalating violence against marginalized groups, particularly BIPOC and trans communities. In 2023, LGBTQ organizations are actively combating more than 650 anti-LGBTQ biases.

It is now a movement for change, for a shift in perception, a shift in the judiciary, a shift in social position, and a shift in contemplating.

A welcome change. Very good thread Neha.

Traditional Hindu literary sources do not speak of homosexuality directly, but changes of sex, homoerotic encounters, and intersex or third gender characters are often found both in traditional religious narratives such as the Vedas, Mahabharata, Ramayana and Puranas as well as in regional folklore.

Literature, as an imitation of human action, often presents a picture of what men think, say, and do in society. In literature, we find stories designed to portray human life and action through some characters who, by their words, actions, and reactions, convey certain messages for the purposes of education, information, and entertainment. This aspect of literature reflecting society, when it comes to Indian English literature, is at its zenith!!

We have ten LGBTQIA+ books that may help you understand, relate to, or connect with 'queer' life in India, ranging from fiction to graphic novels to memoirs, that are worth reading, Neha.

Just a small tangential anecdote:

I've got a friend who wants to work with texts written about the transgender community. He told me he's having to select very carefully where he applies for phds because while many places are open to working with queer themes, they draw the line at any research on transgender people. I also remember one of my sociology professors saying the same thing: aspiring scholars are often deterred from working with the transgender community in any capacity because the community is seen as not fully integrated into mainstream culture and is often regarded as subversive.

Happy Pride Month!! Found this article about queer romance books, so decided to share if anyone would be interested in reading:😳

If anyone's looking out for some queer dramas, you can search for GMMTV in YouTube. They are Thai dramas and they have a lot of options for gay dramas to watch with actually a good plot!❤️
