You've seen him cry in his music videos. You've heard the sentiment in his voice. Singer-composer Himesh Reshammiya gives BT a jhalak into the Cancerian trait he most identifies with — emotion!
Born on July 23, Himesh Reshammiya is a cusp between Cancer and Leo. But he feels he's a 'pucca Cancerian'. "I'm too emotional," states Himesh, matter-of-factly. And emotions are truly a part and parcel of the singer-composer's life, relationships and work. "I make decisions with my heart, not my head. But isn't everything we think and do somehow affected by emotions?" ponders Himesh.
Despite having received criticism for the nasal twang in his voice, his 'cap-n-jacket' dressing style and his similar breed of music, Himesh has still managed to carve a niche for himself. "I'm like the Cancerian crab, hard from the outside, but soft from within. I've faced all kinds of criticism, and have lived through it. Yet, I'm a romantic, emotional human being from the inside," says Himesh.
Known to be rather private when it comes to his personal life, is it the emotional factor that directs his professional life as well? "Certainly. If there's a good vibe, an instant connection, I take up a project. My decisions are instinctive. So what if it's a professional tie-up, it's still a relationship, right," says Himesh. Further talking about his music, the artiste admits that the romantic genre is his favourite. "Romance has always had a universal appeal, it connects with audiences worldwide. After all, love is the biggest universal emotion," says the self-confessed romantic.
But does he ever let his emotions get the better of him, as is usually shown in his music videos? "I think I've got the correct dose of emotionality in me. I guess that's the advantage of being a cusp. Everything is balanced out," laughs Himesh. However, on a more serious note, he says, "But I never stop my emotions from showing. I cried while watching Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Kuch Kuch Hota Hain."
Being a sign that's ruled by the moon, Himesh feels it's an added advantage. "Like the moon constantly changes it's phases, for me too, change is constant, as far as my work is concerned. I like to constantly innovate." But the change of moods does not translate into his personal life, feels Himesh. "I'm a workaholic, so I guess I never get time to be moody. You're moody only when you're idle, right?" he smiles, continuing, "When I'm working on a film or a song, that's all I eat, drink and breathe! I'm too focussed to get moody."
But it's not just focus and the constant urge to change and adapt to situations that he attributes his success to. "Cancerians are extremely intuitive people. Composing music is a creative process, wherein something is created out of nothing. I never follow a formula, I go by my instincts. And somewhere, there is also divine intervention," says Himesh, adding that it's this sixth sense that helps him be ahead of the times. "It's this intuition that helps me predict which musical genre will be the next hit," he says. And like the symbol of his star sign — the crab — Himesh also gets inspired by the sea. "I've always grown up by the sea. And that has given me a sense of calm," he concludes, as he sits in his seafacing house.
