New Delhi: Music composer AR Rehman is back on top as Ru ba ru, from the film Rang de Basanti, bags the honour of 'song of the year 2006'.

In a poll conducted by CNN-IBN, Ru Ba Ru won hands down as it bagged 77,128 votes.

"I think it is all because of Rakeysh and Prasoon's efforts. It is a victory for all of us," Rehman said as he received the trophy.

The song Ya Ali, from the film Gangster, stood second with 28,491 votes. On the third spot with 3,348 votes was Chaand Sifarish, from the film Fanaa.

While the music for Ya Ali has been composed by Pritam, the duo of Jatin and Lalit are behind the success of Chaand Sifarish.

Speaking of the theme behind Ru Ba Ru, he said: "When we thought of doing a song, we wanted to do it on release from darkness. When these guys die, they are released from the darkness of the world."

Earlier, in an interview with CNN-IBN's Entertainment Editor Rajeev Masand, Rehman said, "When we started with this film, what we decided to do was not to have anything which is preachy and going to bring people down."

"We wanted to go abstract and go counter point, like people and children are dying there and we have a happy soundtrack, which is Ru Ba Ru and going to the light and there is more positivity rather than going along with the film."

Striking a chord with music lovers

Music director A.R. Rahman, who likes to compose music albums and film music with "like-minded" people, asserts that his goal is to make people enjoy his music, says Madhur Tankha. He has composed music that will forever remain etched in music lovers' minds. From the melodious "Chhoti Si Asha" in the much talked about film "Roja" to the foot-tapping number "Chaiyya-Chaiyya" in "Dil Se", A. R. Rahman's music has touched the hearts of people not only in the subcontinent but across the world. Here in the Capital this past week to launch an English music video "Pray for Me, Brother" composed and sung by him, Rahman revealed that the album had come about as a result of Nokia Nseries association with A .R. Rahman Foundation. Speaking about his association with ace director Mani Ratnam, Rahman says: "Actually 'Guru' is a continuation of my association with Mani Ratnam. Mani wanted me to sing for Abhishek Bachchan in 'Guru' but I was not sure whether my voice would suit Abhishek. Finally, I agreed to sing the song 'Tere Bina'. But this is not my first Hindi film song. I had earlier sung 'Ma Tujhe Salaam'." Revealing that he discovered his singing style in "Roja'', Rahman claims that the film taught him what music was really all about and what he had to give to the rest of the world. While it is important for Rahman to compose music albums or film music with "like-minded" people, it is equally important that he must enjoy his music. "My ultimate goal is that people should enjoy my music," says Rahman. As for his upcoming Hindi film projects, Rahman says he has already completed two songs for "Akbar Jodha'' that is all about Tansen and Akbar. "We have all grown up watching classics like 'Mughal-e-Azam' and other Mughal era films. But in 'Akbar Jodha' we have tried not to make a re-make of the great classic. At the same time, we have seen to it that we give the same amount of respect and dignity to that era as was done in the earlier film. In the songs, I have incorporated Rajasthani tunes." Rahman says music is in his genes. His earliest memories are of his father, a well-known musician, teaching him to play harmonium. Now his daughter is learning piano. About the difference between composing music for films and composing as well as singing for a music video, Rahman says: "While making a film, you have to be married to the script and also give your individual touch. Now that my latest music video is completed, I feel truly liberated in the sense that I had complete freedom to express myself. It was certainly a better experience." Stating that two years ago, his friends discussed with him the idea of creating an album for people stricken by tuberculosis and poverty, Rahman says: "I wrote lyrics on the lines 'Are you Searching for a Reason to be Kind'. Director Bharat Bala filmed the song in Los Angeles. Besides highlighting the fact that charity does not necessarily mean money or materialistic things, the song is about praying for people who are suffering." Rahman says his latest music video is for a noble cause. "The money earned from the music video will be utilised for opening schools and creating leaders in music and other fields of specialisation." On the importance of religion in his daily life, Rahman says: "Religion teaches a person what his or her real self is, why he has been created and it also tells a person about his relation with his father, mother, wife and daughter. For me religion is a personal journey to other things."

Surprisingly, Rahman does not watch many Hindi films. "I watch a lot of Chinese, Korean and Iranian films with sub-titles,'' he says.

It's time for 'dhoom dhadaka' in 'Guru'
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, December 23, 2006]

After 'Bhagam Bhag', the next big film in the pipeline is Mani Ratnam's 'Guru' that releases on 12th January.

Though the music of the film is already topping the charts, the team of 'Guru' has went ahead and composed two more songs for the film, one of which is already on air. Titled 'Dhoom Dhadaka', this A.R. Rahman composed song plays as a background piece during the dramatic moments of the film.

A fast paced vociferous track with a thumping appeal, it reminds of 'Dhakka Laga Bukka' from 'Yuva' that was on similar lines.

Top Ten albums – SEI reaches Top-3, Anwar shows a jump too
By Joginder Tuteja, December 23, 2006 - 03:57 IST
Rank Last week Film Plusses Minuses
1 1 Guru In spite of controlled publicity, the 'Guru' does remarkably well at the music stands. There may not have been one single chartbuster song that could be termed as the USP of 'Guru' but collectively the album works for the listener. 'Ek Lo Ek Muft' and 'Baazi Laga' are not much impressive audio-wise and may only do well if integrated seamlessly with the flow of the film!
2 2 Dhoom 2 Pritam ends a terrific year on a high with even an average soundtrack like 'Dhoom 2' turning out to be successful due to sheer franchise and face value. All eyes are now set on his next big release 'Metro' where he reunites with his 'Gangster' director Anurag Basu. With talks about 'Dhoom 3' in the making catching up heat, one expects Pritam to deliver a much better soundtrack in case he is roped in to compose for the film.
3 4 Salaam-E-Ishq 3 weeks on the stands and 'Salaam-E-Ishq' enters Top-3 of the music charts. By the time film releases on 25th January, this Shankar Ehsaan Loy soundtrack is destined to grace the chart at the top. If you are looking for something drastically unconventional, the music of 'Salaam-E-Ishq' is not the one for you!
4 3 Don - The Chase Begins Again Music of 'Don' moves out of Top-3 for the first time but there shouldn't be much worry for SEL since they are the composer trio of SEI which has displaced 'Don'. Comparisons with the music of original 'Don' were inevitable. This was the cause of cynics running amok when the soundtrack released.
5 5 Woh Lamhe Second soundtrack of Pritam to be in the Top-5 of the charts, 'Woh Lamhe' continues to be remarkable at the top. It is hard to find a single compilation album by T-Series today that doesn't feature at least one song from the film. None
6 6 Bas Ek Pal Some great music aided by aggressive publicity has ensured that music of 'Bas Ek Pal' is not just liked but loved by the paying public. Melody works….and how! None
7 9 Anwar Mithoon's success story of 'Bas Ek Pal' is repeated, though to a lesser extent, in 'Anwar' where his two songs 'Maula' and 'Tose Naina Lage' are scorching the charts. Roop Kumar Rathod and Khsitij & Shilpa Rao are the singers for the two songs who come up with a superb performance. Pankaj Awasthi has gone truly unconventional which makes remaining album quite unexciting
8 7 Kabul Express After 'Kabul Fiza', best song of the album 'Banjar' has been premiered on the small screen too [though belatedly and that too as a background piece]. Since the film doesn't have any songs in the narrative, music sales of 'Kabul Express' are not expected to grow any further
9 8 Bhagam Bhag Unlike 'Kabul Express', music sales of 'Bhagam Bhag' are expected to show a rise as the film releases today. The movie is expected to be successful and that should help Pritam smile once more for this album which as per him is his favorite of the season. Music isn't as exciting as Priyan-Pritam last outing 'Garam Masala'
10 10 Baabul The movie has underperformed at the box office and the same reflects in music sales too. Aadesh Srivastava had come up with some good tunes and if the film would have gone the 'Baghban' way, the music would have caught up too. It's a pity that Big B sung 'Kehta Hai Baabul' couldn't get its due

First Look:

Jodhaa Akbar

Cast - Hrithik Roshan (as Emperor Akbar), Aishwarya Rai (as Jodhabhai)

Director - Ashutosh Gowariker

Producer - UTV Motion Pictures, Ashutosh Gowariker [Ashutosh Gowariker Productions]

Dialogues - K.P.Saxena

Cinematograhy - Kiran Deohans [Aks, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham]

Editor - Ballu Saluja

Choreography - Vaibhavi Merchant, Bosco-Ceaser, Raju Khan, Saroj Khan

Costumes - Neeta Lulla

Lyrics - Javed Akhtar

- Reports say that ARR will compose 12 songs for this film.

- One song by Alka Yagnik. "I'm also singing for 'Jodha-Akbar' - again For Aishwarya, though I suspect this time the songs will be in the background." - Alka.

- One Qawwali by Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik. [A.R.Rahman had talked about him recording a qawwali "Khwaja Mere Khwaja" for a forthcoming film. This could well be it!]

- Recent reports say that Reliance - Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (R-ADAG) is negotiating with Gowariker for financing the film.

- Huge historical epic about the romance between Mughal king Akbar and his Rajput wife Jodhabai

- "You could say I've taken a historical decision to make a film called 'Jodha-Akbar'. It'll be a romantic musical. Jodha-Akbar' is one of the two-three scripts that I had in mind for quite a while. I finally zeroed in on this. It won't go into the older days of the pair. It would show them in the prime of their togetherness and probably end where 'Mughal-e-Azam' begins.I just want to dwell on a little-known facet of Indian history that hasn't been exposed in history books, let alone on screen. I intend to appoint a research team of historians and scholars from Delhi, Lucknow, Agra and Jaipur to guide me. Jodha-Akbar' would be a full-on period film without props. It would be expensive. But I'm not getting into highlighting the budget and making that a USP of my project. For me the product will justify the expenses." - Ashutosh Gowariker [Indiavarta]

- With this film, Hrithik gets a chance to play a benevolent Mughal emperor who dared to love and marry a Hindu princess. Says Hrithik, "It will have war, horses and swords. I will play a very young and virile Akbar. It's a very real drama, not theatrical at all. It's my first costume drama because I will wear a costume. But that doesn't mean it will be excessively dramatic. I have faith in Ashutosh Gowariker's abilities. His intelligent perspective during his narrative convinced me he can never make an actor look bad. He believes in the real and tries to capture the real. He never constrains the actor, but allows them to be natural on camera." [MumbaiMirror]

- Scholar Haider Ali Sahib is helping Ashutosh with the research for Akbar-Jodha.

- Hrithik and Aishwarya underwent lessons in horse riding and sword fighting for the film, in Oct 06.

CURRENT STATUS - Shooting started in Jaipur with a Mahurat shot on Nov 1st 2006. The shooting will take place in Agra, Delhi, Jaipur and interiors of Rajasthan. Movie slated to release on 12th Oct 2007.
