What was hot & not in 2006

Now it's been a year of ups and downs, successes and failures, and of course, lots of lessons for everyone. Hopefully the mistakes made in 2006 won't be repeated in 2007. We're all going home with something valuable. Let's take a look at 10 things we learnt this year:

< src="http://202.87.40.52/promos/sponsor_news.js">

Hrithik Roshan is a superhero.
I mean think about it. He turned two just about average films into moneyspinning blockbusters. Don't forget, both "Krrish" and "Dhoom 2" were watchable only for Hrithik's fantastic performances. Take Hrithik out of these films and what you're left with are two extremely amateurish films which have little to offer in terms of either plot or entertainment.

Ranvir Sheorey is a comic genius.
Nobody's made us laugh this hard since Paresh Rawal in "Hera Pheri". Ranvir Sheorey delivered a double whammy in "Khosla Ka Ghosla" and "Pyaar Ke Side Effects", practically stealing the show from his co-stars in both films. He brings an endearing goofiness to such everyday characters that you want to see more and more of him in every film.

Vivek Oberoi needs some serious career guidance.
First "Pyaare Mohan", then "Naksha". And we're just talking about this year. Come on Mr Oberoi, pick yourself up from the floor, dust your pants, stop sobbing about your break-up with Aishwarya and show us that spark we saw in "Company".

Himesh Reshammiya knows how to make a noise.
Love him or loathe him but you can't ignore him. He had a whole bunch of chartbusters this year including "Jhalak dikhlaja" from "Aksar", "Zara Jhoom Jhoom" from "Tom Dick & Harry" and "A-a-ashiqui mein teri" from "36 China Town". Sure the best soundtracks may have belonged to AR Rahman and Pritam, but nobody grabbed headlines the way Himesh did this year. His nasal voice, his beard, the hat on his head, everything was discussed. In terms of attention, no one got as much as Himesh did. However, the signature clothing line and a film starring him might be a bit much.

Ash and Abhishek have zero chemistry on screen.
It's official guys, on screen Aishwarya and Abhishek are as bland as frozen yoghurt. I mean just go watch "Umrao Jaan", they share the intensity of a light bulb. Their romantic scenes lack any spark and their bedroom banter that's meant to be passionate is actually quite hilarious. After "Dhai Akshar Prem Ke" and "Kuch Na Kaho", their non-chemistry in "Umrao Jaan" is strike three, game over. For real chemistry refer to Ash and Salman in "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" or Abhishek and Rani in "Yuva". As for "Guru" in which they're starring together, perhaps Mani knows best.

The hype for Don was more fun that the movie itself.
Will he match upto the Big B? Can he do justice to Khaike paan banaraswala? What will Bachchan think of the remake? I mean, admit it, all the hype and all the excitement leading upto the film's release was way more exciting than the film itself. Today's biggest superstar stepping into the shoes of the country's favourite actor. It was headline news from the moment they announced the film to the time you stepped into the cinema. As far as I'm concerned, the film itself did very little to justify the hype.

These people should be bigger stars: Arshad Warsi, Sanjay Suri, Konkona Sensharma.
It was the year of Arshad Warsi. Many felt his timing was better than Sanju's in "Lage Raho Munnabhai" and nobody can deny the fact that he practically chewed up John Abraham in "Kabul Express." He even rocked in "Golmaal" and "Anthony Kaun Hai". It's high time they stop casting him as the sidekick and use him as a lead now.

Sanjay Suri was perhaps the only saving grace in "Bas Ek Pal", he pumped life into that film and has been consistently delivering admirable performances. Can someone please pull him out of low-budget indies and cast him in a movie worthy of his talent!

As for Konkona Sensharma, she dazzled in Aparna Sen's "15 Park Avenue" and Naseeruddin Shah's "Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota", and in "Omkara" she just stood out because she performed so naturally amidst a bunch of made-up beauties. Sure it's a compliment when you call her today's Smita Patil, but let that not be an excuse to resign her to arty films only. She deserves to be up there with the Ranis and the Aishwaryas.

Mallika Sherawat can act.
Let's pretend "Shaadi Se Pehle" didn't happen, and let's consider only "Darna Zaroori Hai" and "Pyaar Ke Side Effects". I have to say, Mallika was a revelation. In that teeny-weeny role in "Darna Zaroori Hai" she practically overshadows Anil Kapoor. And in "Pyaar Ke Side Effects", she's so damn good that the film is considerably enhanced by the quality of her performance. In all fairness with that performance in "Murder" she'd proved already that there's more to her than those quotable quotes. But this year she's convinced us that she's got acting chops to match that big mouth of hers.

Making fun of the handicapped is sick!
Comedies about dumb and deaf protagonists are just not funny. And the box office performance of "Pyaare Mohan", "Tom Dick & Harry" and "Chup Chup Ke" have proved that insensitive jokes about the handicapped don't go down too well. These films were tasteless, they were hurtful, and to top it all they really weren't even funny. The lines weren't clever, the jokes were childish and quite frankly, actors like Dino Morea, Anuj Sawhney and Jimmy Shergill don't exactly deliver sterling performances with all their senses intact - can you imagine how bad they were pretending to be dumb, deaf and blind?

Ramgopal Varma has officially lost it.
He produced three colossal duds this year - "Darna Zaroori Hai", "Darwaza Bandh Rakho" and "Shiva". As if that wasn't bad enough, Ramu spent the most part of 2006 forging ahead with his ambitious but arrogant dream project "Ramgopal Varma Ke Sholay" in which he's cast Ajay Devgan as Veeru and some random fellow called Prakash Raj as Jai.

A legal notice from the producers of the original "Sholay" notwithstanding, Ramu insists his version will be an audacious remake of the first. With Amitabh Bachchan stepping in to play Gabbar, Ramu says his casting's just perfect, but the industry says Ramgopal Varma has lost it.

10 dances that made you flock the theatres
By Joginder Tuteja, December 28, 2006 - 03:16 IST
Movies may come and movies may go, trends may emerge and they may fade, but what will never change is Bollywood's love for its songs and dances. After all this is what makes us different from the rest of the world! There were number of eye pleasing dances in the year gone by. Some were sensual, some were classy, some were funky while some were downright sexy!

1) Jhalak Dikhlaja - Aksar

Undoubtedly the most 'watched' song of the year! When 'Jhalak Dikhlaja' was heard first, there were no doubts that the song would lead to a chartbuster status. After all the song had enough credentials to be popular just with a great tune by Himesh Reshammiya and Emraan Hashmi to boost. The song came on air, the movie released and the song turned into a smashing success. Such has been the success of the song that it finds a place in every VCD/DVD song compilation and is quite popular even today over all satellite TV music channels. The song rocked in a big way and though there were no vigorous dance steps, it was sheer attitude and Hashmi's presence that made 'Jhalak Dikhlaja' as it is today!

2) Beedi - Omkara

When the song came on screen first, it seemed that it would work mainly in the interiors. Today, it is heard in the most up market Indians pubs and discs in India and abroad. One wonders if even the song's choreographer would have ever thought the song would be such a rage across the globe. Bipasha Basu may have been dancing to a tune set in rural India but not even one finger can point to her saying that she was vulgar or indecent. Now that's what a class actress at the helm of affairs for such a song makes a difference. Any other lesser mortal and 'Beedi' may have been a sleaze show all the way!

3) Zara Jhoom Jhoom - Tom, Dick and Harry

When Tom, Dick and Harry released, not many said that they were venturing into the theaters to watch Dino Morea, Jimmy Shergill and Arjun Sawhney wear their Tom, Dick and Harry caps! They said that they were going in to watch 'Zara Jhoom Jhoom'! And if the movie turned out to be good then it was just an added bonus. Well, even the makers and the music company seemed to be in a know-how of this and that could well be the reason why majority of publicity campaign of the film revolved around this very number. Excitingly choreographed with nice moves, good lighting and stylish setting, 'Jhoom Jhoom' till date makes one go 'jhoom'!

4) Humko Maaloom Hai - Jaan E Mann

Power of subtlety! That was the underlining strength of songs in Jaan-E-Mann. With an entire movie set on a Broadway theme, it was quite challenging to treat each song as different within the film's context. For those who have been bred on Bollywood for decades, it was quite a refreshing change to see a new approach being adopted for choreographing 'Humko Maaloom Hai'. Well, this was not all as songs like 'Ajnabi Shehar' and 'Sau Dard Hai' which may otherwise have been one of those routine background tracks, too stood out, all thanks to choreographer's innovative ideas that made them cut above the rest.

5) Zinda Hoon Main - Zinda

How can one forget one of the most stylish songs coming from Bollywood stable? 'Zinda Hoon Main' may have started playing towards the end of 2005 but by the time the film released in 2006, the song had indeed caught up the heart, courtesy Ms. Lara Dutta's sensual moves amidst a glass set! One doesn't expect a routine job from director Sanjay Gupta and 'Zinda Hoon Main' was no different as experimentation and style merged to deliver one of the most international-looking music videos that has ever been witnessed in India.

6) Golmaal - Golmaal

Beach, babes and bikes - Lethal combination of each of these three formed an integral part of a great outing called 'Golmaal Golmaal' that played at the beginning of the film. Setting context of what's up in store for the rest of the film, the title song is one of the glossiest numbers ever seen with some fresh dance steps that were trendy, hip-hop, sensual and never once vulgar even with 100 odd semi-clad women around. No wonder, the song still graces the music channels every now and then!

7) Guitar - Apna Sapna Money Money

If you have lived in the 80s and early 90s, you know what Govinda and Anil Kapoor used to offer in their films. If not, you would know about that it after watching the song 'Dil Mein Baji Guitar' from the film Apna Sapna Money Money. The song was designed in two phases - one with Riteish Deshmukh as a hero with Koena Mitra as his female partner and the other where Riteish was the female partner of Anupam Kher. While Ritiesh had a great time jiving around in red pants a la Govinda in a stage that was set in a shopping mall, Anupam Kher too didn't miss out on action as his libido was on an overdrive with Riteish making all the right inviting gestures. Result? A masala number all the way for the masses.

8) Aaj Ki Raat - Don

How much can simple facial expressions and subtle body language convey through a dance? A lot if one looks, and then re-looks, at the lounge number 'Aaj Ki Raat'. It may have been a situational track in the film but fact cannot be denied that 'Aaj Ki Raat' was the most defining tracks of the lot. A number where Priyanka Chopra and Isha Koppikar tried to be on top of each other with each believing that they knew the real Don, it was King Khan's entry towards the middle of the song on the glass stage which proved who was the best of the lot. And no, we didn't really mind the 70s style bubble effect on the frames!

9) Aashique Ye Meri - 36 China Town

Second track in the best choreographed songs to be featuring Isha Koppikar, 'Aashique Ye Meri' was the song that brought Upen Patel to your living room. Loads of attitude, loads of style, an innovative stage, great tune and some eye pleasing moves - each of these combined together to make 'Aashique Ye Meri' a song that would be remembered for many more years. And yes, there was a Kareena/Shahid/Akshaye version of the song too that rocked the show!

10) Sini Ne - Jawani Diwani

It's a pity that the song didn't get what it deserved! One of the best music videos ever created for a Bollywood film, 'Sini Ne' (although inspired) was the most rocking number in Jawani Diwani and boasted of some cool funky dance steps. Emraan Hashmi didn't dance around the stage for this one! He just stood there and made his face, body language and last but not the least, some trendy costumes and accessories do the talking. Rest was left to a dozen odd hot bods in the background to add on the effect and lo, a sexy song was born!

Partying before the real party!

Mandvi Sharma

AAP KI KASHISH:

Himesh Reshammiya was recently in town to be a part of Shivani Srivastava's birthday party. Before the party, some of his close friends got together to let their hair down. Himesh looked thin and we wondered why till he explained, "I'm working on my look for my movie. I've lost weight."

WHO'S THAT GUY?

Remember the reality show winner Vineet? He has changed his look and it was difficult to recognise him. And didn't he have fun mimicking Shah Rukh Khan! While Himesh sipped some coffee and surfed TV channels, we asked him if he was tired? "I am coming from Ludhiana, so I look tired. But I'm very energetic when I am performing," said he.

THEY WERE ALSO HERE...

Himesh's sister Rupa and his film director Prashant were also present followed by singer
Aarti Kakkar
but she preferred to sit in a corner.
YEH TO HONA HI THA! Rajesh Kha-ttar and Vandana were invited for coffee too. Well, they did have coffee and enjoyed the friendly banter but laughing at the wrestlers on TV was the funniest part of this friendly do. Until Rupa said, "I am tired!"
