Copy | Original | Info |
The Gentleman | The Gentleman (tamil) | The south-indian hit, The Gentleman, was remade in Hindi by director Mahesh Bhatt. Mahesh Bhatt's favorite Anu Malik did the music of the film. It turned out that even the songs were a remake of the original. Yes, Anu Malik copied most of the songs from the original songs by AR Rahman. The Gentleman (Hindi) starred Juhi Chawla & Chiranjeevi. |
"O Janeman Chehra Tera" | "Muqaala Muqabla" | The music of Raghuveer was by Dilip Sen-Sameer Sen and it starred Sunil Shetty & Shilpa Shirodkar. However the song was also copied in many other Hindi films. |
"Tere Liye" | "Roja" | The movie starred Ajay Devgan, Karisma Kapoor, Akshay Kumar & Naghma. Anand-Milind rendered the music. |
"Taana Tandaana" | "Sunle O Jaanam" | Insaaf starred Akshay Kumar & Shilpa Shetty. The music was by Anand-Milind. |
"Deewana Deewana" | "Thilana Thilana" | Jung starred Ajay Devgan & Rambha and the music was by Dilip Sen-Sameer Sen |
Have you ever heard a Rahman song you thought you've heard in somewhere else? Here's a list of some songs Rahman reused or was inspired from.
"Hello Mr Ethirkatchi" from Iruvar (tamil) | "Memphis Stomp" | N/A |
"Akkada" (tamil)/"Latka" (Hindi) | "Love of common people" album: No Parlez | N/A |
"Chandirani" from Ratchagan(tamil) | "Pari Hoon Mein" by Suneeta Rao | Though there is nothing official on this, there are striking resemblances between the two songs. The beats as well as one of the interludes. |
"Mil Gayi Woh Manzilein" | "Anjali Anjali" | Kabhi Na Kabhi was Priyadarshan's much awaited film, which took about 6-7 years in the making. It starred Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff & Pooja Bhatt. The song was a re-orchestrated version of the original. |
"Yaaron Sunlo Zara" | "Baboo Lo Chal Gaya" | Rangeela was Rahman's first original Hindi film. This not-so-original song was released before the release of the soundtrack of Super Police in Hindi. |
Pudhiya Mugam (tamil) | Vishwa Vidhaata was the Hindi remake of Pudhiya Mugam. The music was dubbed from the original tamil movie.
May Madham (tamil) | Seems like the charm of the music was lost somewhere in the dubbing.
Oonjal (tamil) & | Oonjal was released as just a music album and Jodi was released as a film album. All had the same songs, but later 2 new songs were added to Jodi.
"Bombay Theme" | "Bombay Theme" | Rahman allowed the popular "Bombay Theme" from the film Bombay to be used as the background score in Deepa Mehta's Fire. Though the movie was not really appreciated in India much, the background score was. |
"Gurus of Peace" | "Poraale Ponnuthayi" | AR Rahman and the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's collaboration was yet another one of Rahman's own remakes. The song's tune sounded a lot like his song from the film Karuthamma. |
"Musafir" | "Ottakatha Kattiko" from The Gentleman (tamil) | Both are amazing songs with completely different moods to them. "Musafir" being the upbeat Anglo- Arabic version and "Ottakatha Kattiko" being the more usual Indian ARR stuff. |
"Jumbalika" | "Jumbalaka" | The tamil version, "Jumbalaka" from the film En Swaasa Kaatre, was reused in Hindi film Thakshak. Slight changes were made to the original. |
"Kay Sera Sera" | "Nayagra" | The song "Nayagra" from the tamil film En Swaasa Kaatre was remixed in Hindi as the necessary 'item number' for the much-awaited Raj Kumar Santoshi film Pukar under the name "Kay Sera Sera". |
"Ek Tu Hi Bharosa" from Pukar | "Oh Bosnia" (Behasa Malayu) Performed at the 1997 concert in Malaysia | Lata Mageshkar's first song with Rahman after the hit "Jiya Jale" from Dil Se.. To me the song (or rather bhajan) was a major disappointment. On the other hand, it was praised by many. |

Here are some of the names of AR Rahman's films that you might have heard about but never got to see them on screen or even hear the songs. These names also include the names of the films ARR was offered, but had to reject because of his other projects.
Movie | Info |
Shikhar | A movie directed by Subhash Ghai. The movie started off before Taal and even before Pardes! It was shelved because of some unknown reasons. It is rumoured that this project was shelved because of some misunderstandings between AR Rahman and Subhash Ghai, which is not true as their partnership continued with the film Taal. We just might see this movie on screen after Taal, but then again; maybe not. The song "Ishq Bina" was originally composed for Shikhar, but later, a reorchestrated version was used in Taal. It is heard that Manisha Koirala was signed for the movie and Subhash Ghai wanted to sign Urmila Matondkar for this story about two rival sisters. |
Ta Ra Rum Pum Pum | Shekhar Kapoor's dream musical with 12 songs never became a reality. This movie starred the Liril Fresh Girl-Preity Zinta. Maybe the reason why the project was called off was because of the death of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who was supposed to do the music with ARR. However, Rahman in one of his interviews mentioned that the project might be taken up again. |
Waaqia | Well, I don't know anything about this movie other than the fact that it starred Karisma Kapoor and some Sanjay...(which one?). The lyrics were by Gulzar. Gulzar has reportedly said recently that he IS working on this film, so I guess it might just come up. |
Nayak | Another Rahman musical directed by Ramgopal Varma. Of course it had Ramoo's favourite Urmila Matondkar alongside Sanjay Dutt. The movie's story sort of merged in with the story of Daud, whose music was incidentally given by Anu Malik. Then Ramoo decided to sign ARR for the music of the movie and cut out the slickest movie of all time Daud, which also turned out to be a huge flop despite all the hype it was getting. The same name is now being used by two films, one a Hrithik Roshan starrer and the other Shankar's directorial debut in Hindi. Shankar's film has the titled extended to Nayak-The Real Hero, with music by AR Rahman. |
A dubbed film starring Karisma Kapoor & Arvind Swami, was packed up in mid 1999. The original version was supposed to be in Tamil, called Mudhal Mudhalaaga.
Saat Rang Ke Sapne | Director Priyadarshan's launch of the south-indian chocolate hero, Arvind Swami, into Hindi films was offered to AR Rahman. He had to refuse the project because he could not take time out for the movie. Nadeem-Shravan ended up doing the music. |
Josh | AR Rahman refused this project. Anu Malik was signed up later for the music. |
Mela | Aamir Khan had been trying to contact Rahman for his second film with director Dharmesh Darshan, who gave Aamir his biggest hit Raja Hindustani. AR Rahman gave up yet another project, which landed at Rajesh Roshan & Anu Malik's doorsteps. |
Kama Sutra | The highly controversial Kama Sutra was offered to AR Rahman. Rahman said that he did not have time for the movie, though people do say that Rahman rejected the movie because of its 'explicit content'. |
Ittefaq | The movie was supposed to star Chandrachur Singh and Namrata Shirodkar, and the lyrics to be penned by Gulzar. However, the movie was shelved and the name is now being used by a Sunil Shetty-Mukul Dev-Anupama Verma starrer, with music by Dilip Sen-Sameer Sen. |

"I always ask before I sing for a star since I have to prepare myself accordingly" – Madhushree |
By IndiaFM News Bureau, November 13, 2006 - 09:49 IST |
Have you heard of Madhushree? Or rather, should we ask have you heard Madhushree? For sure you have. But if the name doesn't instantly clicks in your mind, let us tell you that she is the same girl who sang 'Kabhi Neem Neem, Kabhi Shahad Shahad' from Yuva. Indeed Shahad (honey-soaked) is her voice – that's where Sujata Bhattacharya gets her rechristened name from. Madhushree (Madhu means honey) as she is popularly known in the music industry has sung for films like Saathiya, Swades, Kisna, Paheli, Mangal Pandey and Rang De Basanti to name a few. IndiaFM has an exclusive conversation with the talented singer. Was taking up singing as a career your personal choice or something that happened by chance? Basically I come from a musical family. I have been singing from childhood. It became a career option once I knew I could sing well for the audience. Singing is something I have always been inclined towards. Did training happen at home or you took formal training in singing from outside as well? I took training from my father. But after learning the basics I did take professional training from my guruji. How did you start in Bollywood? I was in south, doing really well. People used to tell me that my voice is very good for Bollywood. So I thought of giving it a chance. I met with music directors and they liked my voice. I worked with Rahman, Rajesh Roshan, Shankar Ehsan Loy to name a few. That is how I entered and now I am working hard. You work mostly with A.R.Rahman |
