Will Ratnam-Rahman click this time?
Sameer Wadekar, Bollywood Trade News Network

Just heard the song 'Tere Bina' from the upcoming Mani Ratnam film GURU. The music is simply haunting and what a terrific job by Rahman. Infact the film has an elegant musical score, which just exudes the classy genius of the music maestro. One can't help saying 'Maan Gaye GURU'. Well GURU once again brings forth the Mani Ratnam-A R Rahman collaboration. But the movie looks quite noteworthy if one skims over the little factors associated with this film.

First of all, A R Rahman has composed outstanding scores for his mentor Mani Ratnam's movies. But they haven't been able to 'score' in Bollywood so far. This combination has not clicked when it comes to Hindi movies. Their previous ventures DIL SE and YUVA turned out to be huge disappointments. So they surely might be pinning their hopes on GURU this time.

Secondly, this movie again pairs up Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. They too haven't dished out a hit as a pair since their KUCH NAA KAHO days, which saw them as the lead pair for the first time. The recently released UMRAO JAAN too fizzled away. The forthcoming DHOOM 2 also stars both of them but not as a couple. So it's GURU that both will have to bank upon.

This could be really interesting. The credits of the film display a name that reads Mithun Chakraborty. Ohh! This amazes a lot coz as it clearly come across a little unexpected given the fact that the soft-spoken director has always chosen to work with big names. Mithun, a very talented actor and a former dancing star, is even remembered today by many a movie lovers. But today he is not in the list of happening actors and that makes his selection a little startling. But you never know with Ratnam; he is a guy with the Golden Touch!

And last but not the least, Mallika Sherawat is all set to sizzle the folks with an item number. She has already cemented her bold image in Bollywood, but this song could well be her first 'item number' for any movie.

So it seems GURU has a lot in store for the movie buffs. It's also touted to be based on the life of one of India's leading industrial tycoons. If it is to be believed then this could be Mani Ratnam's first biographical sketch. The Southern movie-ace has always attempted to present something credible and realistic. What is he offering with GURU? Gotta check out!

Which music composer do you like the most?

A R Rahman. I would like to use a lot of strings like he does. Of late, I have also started liking the work of Vishal-Shekar and Shankar-Eshaan-Loy because they are fresh and energetic.

says Dhruv Dhalla

Zubeidaa: Story of a Princess > Customer Review #1: brilliant A. R. Rahman

If you can get over two hurdles (that I consider lt;brgt;minor) then you are in for the aural treat oflt;brgt;your life. (Unless you are satisfied with listeninglt;brgt;to the same old sounds all of your life).lt;brgt; The hurdles are 1)you must be able to enjoy musiclt;brgt;sung in a foreign language and 2) you shouldlt;brgt;acquire a taste for the Indian female vocalist-lt;brgt;which usually sounds like a little girl voicelt;brgt;sung with a pinched nose sound.lt;brgt;Zubeidaa is one of his best. Rahman combines great melodieslt;brgt;with a mix of Indian rhythms and other world sounds. Delightful!

Zubeidaa: Story of a Princess > Customer Review #2: Vintage AR Rahman....

Zubeidaas soundtrack follows the standard format of Indian movie soundtracks...there is no "score" as such, but rest assured that if you see the movie, parts of the songs on the cd will turn up as beautiful instrumental or vocal pieces. AR Rahmans signature is evident throughout the album, as he transports the listener to the royal ambience of the 1940s and 50s through these songs.lt;brgt;Dheeme Dheeme by Kavitha Krishnamurthy is a beautiful tune in itself, where the singers voice melds with the sounds of the indian flute and the dafli. The lyrics go "Softly, oh slowly I sing, my love, that you are mine...you brought happiness backinto my life, you brought back hope...."lt;brgt;Main Albeli is by Kavitha again, an exuberant song with Spanish/Arabic overtones. Sukhwindara Singh takes the high notes like there is no tomorrow...."I am beyond compare, I wander alone through the streets, a riddle, the mad winds tease my braid of hair..."lt;brgt;Mehndi Hai Rachnewali by Alka Yagnik is a wedding song, with a catchy bass loop, and claps, that bring in a traditional Indian feel and a contemporary backdrop, at the same time. The piano interlude in the second part of the song has to be heard to be believed. True fusion! lt;brgt; Both versions of So Gaye Hai are by Lata Mangeshkar, the nightingale of Indian cinema, and her voice expresses the pathos of lost love beautifully. The second part is more symphonic, with strings (The Rahman orchestra) and a choir adding to the achingly beautiful song of a princess broken heart. lt;brgt;Hai Na by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik is your standard love song, the tune literally bubbles and frothes, you would amazed where it takes you.The use of Indian percussion gives it just the right ethnic touch. Udit Narayans voice shows why exactly he is one of the most revered singers in India today. lt;brgt;Pyaara Sa Gaaon is a slow song, which is lyric-heavy, it is very situational and maybe new listeners will find it very slow, if they dont know the language. It is a lullaby, where the mother narrates the story of a prince to her son. Lata Mangeshkars voice can be soothing or irritating, depending on the mood you are in.lt;brgt;Chodo Mori Baiyyan is definitely a cut above the rest. The lyrics literally translate to "Leave my arms, O beloved, the world might be watching.", and the song is a classical paen belonging to a genre calle "Thumri" in Hindustani Classical music. Richa Sharmas voice is raw enough to carry off the song perfectly; minimal instrumentation ( a drone and a sarangi ) make it a worthy listen.lt;brgt; The songs on the other cd are vintage AR Rahman, from his first movie "Roja" to the cult classics "Bombay", "Rangeela", "Indian" to the little known "Dil Hi Dil Mein" ( Kaadhalar Dinam) lt;brgt;Overall the cd of Zubeidaa is a must-buy for Rahman fans. For people who got into his music post-"Bombay Dreams" and want to know more of his works, this work brings out the soft, mellow side of the Indian composer. DO NOT buy this cd if you are looking for poppy, beat-driven music. Most of this music is epic, orchestral and very romantic. Great to listen to on a romantic evening or when you are alone...lt;brgt;The sound quality, music, arrangements, vocals - everything is awesome in this album. Try and check it out, you wont regret it.

"This is the first time I have invited another composer to write a musical for the stage,he (A.R.Rehman) is one of the most exciting young composers of our time".

"A.R.Rehman is simply brilliant. What you might possibly call the best. His work is very different, very unusual and he himself is such a simple and humble guy that it would be a pleasure for us to work with him. He will bring a different kind of flavour to a musical production in the West".

Dilip has helped me so much playing keyboards when I did my very first recording in the 80s. Dilip and I have been very good friends then and we have performed together in many programs. I still remember Dilip as a 'kid' performing in the 'Soviet Cultural Auditorium' in Madras and I was one among the audience who were thrilled with his talents in handling multiple keyboards at the same time. I feel honored performing with Dilip in the 'Music Academy' on the birthday celebrations of Sri.S.P.Balasubrahmanyam. I take this opportunity to thank Dilip for all the help that I've received from Dilip. Are you wondering what is all this about 'Dilip' and who is 'Dilip'?

'A.S.Dilipkumar' of the most popular band 'the aristocrats' in the 80s - is none other than the 'Greatest Composer' Sri.A.R.Rahman!
