When A R Rahman arrived on the scene more than 10 years ago, he was followed by a huge wave of singers, who brought freshness to the music scene, but now ''it is all lost in the hip-hop thing,'' says playback singer Srinivas.

After attempting a historical role in Kumararama, Shivarajkumar has once again returned to a full-length action film, with a crime element. With a loving girl on one side and the police chasing him on the other, the hero carries on his secret activities, by changing his location frequently. Recently some important scenes were picturised by cinematographer VS Seetharam and directed by S Murali Mohan. KP Srikanth and R Vijayakumari are producing this film under the banner of Company Enterprises. The film has story by Ajaykumar, action by Ravivarma, music by Gurukiran, screenplay and dialogue by S Murali Mohan. Arathi Chabbria, Sridevika, Nataraj and MS Balu are also in the cast. Former police official HT Sangliyaana (three films based on his real life incidents were produced earlier) is appearing in a special role. Kasinath back after 13 years
Actor, director and writer Kasinath is back again. His film that had commenced 13 years ago, is now complete and is getting released soon. Gattithaali Bittimezha commenced in 1993 by five producers, could not be completed for various reasons. Now the film has been completed and got a Censor certificate too. Peter J Kemulos has composed music earlier for this film and now Rajesh Ramanth has completed the job, composing two more songs. Kashinath and Madhuri are in the lead roles. Snehaparva complete After canning two songs, the shooting of Snehaparva has entered its final schedule. As the name suggests, it is about the importance of friendship. Anand Subrahmanya, AP Sivanand and KN Manjunath are producing this film which is directed by GK Mudhuraj. Screenplay and dialogue by BA Madhu, cinematography by Ravi and music by Leo are the other credits. Anand, Paarth, Chetan, Sowmya, Nanda and Sandeep are in the cast. Parodi in jail The unit of Parodi which has Upendra in the lead role is presently at Mysore jail to can some scenes. Some songs will also be picturised there. The film stars Manvi, Neha, Umasri, Rangaayana Raghu, Jeevi, Lakshman, Pradeep Raval and Sathish. Produced by AR Rahman and directed by Saiprakash, it has music by Rajesh Ramnath, cinematography by Ramesh Babu and editing by Manohar. Song recorded for Kali Generally heroes in our films are the personification of all the good in the world. But in Kali (meaning 'learn'), the hero is different. The tagline says 'don't learn anything from him'. Just see the film and enjoy it, but don't take the hero seriously seems to be the message of director S Umesh's 18th film. Recently songs were recorded for the film at Akash Recording Studio. Akash, hero of Autograph Please, plays the lead role. Produced by HR Krishna and Manjunath, it has cinematography by Sundernath Suvara and music by AT Raveesh. This is the first film for John as a stuntmaster, who had worked in 500 films so far.

"Bombay Dreams" is all about romance and raga beats

By Jeff Shannon

Special to The Seattle Times

1 of 3

Beneath the spectacle is the love story between Priya (Reshma Shetty, left), the daughter of a famous director, and Akaash (Sachin Bhatt), a poor aspiring actor.

JOAN MARCUS

Do the shakalaka: The touring production of "Bombay Dreams" combines elements of the London and Broadway shows, and features music by popular Indian composer A.R. Rahman.

JOAN MARCUS

Elaborate dance numbers are a big part of "Bombay Dreams," which opens tonight at 5th Avenue Theatre.

While most Americans are clueless about "Bollywood," film-savvy Seattleites are generally more enlightened about India's thriving Hindi-language film industry, and specifically the lavish, colorful musicals it produces by the hundreds every year. Purists may bristle at the word "Bollywood" (a slang combination of Bombay — India's most populated city, officially renamed Mumbai in 1995 — and Hollywood) for suggesting a poor-man's relation to Hollywood, but there's nothing secondary about Bollywood's box-office clout.

Known for their interchangeable plots, dazzling production numbers and popular stars who achieve god-like status among worshipping fans, Bollywood musicals are now a global phenomenon. When Seattle's own Scarecrow Video launched its short-lived video label in 1996, its first title was the 1992 Indian musical "God is My Witness." The film was somewhat unique, with its Afghani settings, but an otherwise typical Bollywood import, including its three-hour running time, common to the genre.

Since then, Bollywood's profile has blossomed with crossover hits like "Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India," "Bollywood Queen" and "Bride and Prejudice," the latter a Bollywood/Hollywood hybrid, based on Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" and starring Bollywood superstar Aishwarya Rai, often referred to as "the most beautiful woman in the world."

Given the popular trend of film-to-musical-stage adaptations like "Hairspray," "The Lion King" and "The Color Purple," it was only a matter of time before Broadway hitched its wagon to Bollywood's star. The results of this cross-pollination could've been awkward or even disastrous, but the general consensus is that "Bombay Dreams" is dazzling entertainment.

Seattle is the final stop for the national tour of this lavish stage production, which kicks off the 5th Avenue Theatre's 2006-07 season in high style Thursday night. It also marks the debut of the 5th Avenue's online ticketing service, allowing customers to bypass Ticketmaster and purchase tickets directly from the 5th Avenue's Web site, which offers stage views from different seating sections and up-to-date information on ticket availability.

"Bombay Dreams" was conceived when British/Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur ("Elizabeth," "The Four Feathers") and British musical icon Andrew Lloyd Webber grew fascinated with Bollywood and the music of India's most popular composer, A.R. Rahman.

With lyrics by Don Black and book by Meera Syal and Thomas Meehan (co-writer of the Broadway version), "Bombay Dreams" sticks to Bollywood tradition with its story of Akaash, a handsome young man from the slums of Bombay who dreams of Bollywood fame. He finds his path to stardom when he falls in love with Priya, the daughter of a famous Bollywood director. But Akaash soon learns the price of fame, and "Bombay Dreams" tugs at the heartstrings with its emphasis on the importance of cultural heritage and friendship.

Coming up

"Bombay Dreams," previews 7:30 p.m. today, opens 8 p.m. Thursday, runs through Oct. 1, 5th Avenue Theatre, 1308 5th Ave., Seattle; $20-$73 (888-584-4849 or www.5thavenue.org).

The show was a huge, two-year hit in London (2002-04), but its 2004 Broadway run was a relative disappointment, closing after eight months yet still earning Tony nominations for costumes, choreography and orchestrations.

Best of both worlds

According to national tour director Baayork Lee, the road show combines the best elements of its predecessors, with some unique ingredients of its own.

"We had the opportunity to see what worked and what didn't in both shows," writes Lee via e-mail. "We also were very lucky to have Tom Meehan on our team to guide us. We took the positives from both shows and added a little of our own creativity to make this a new production. The opportunity to bring the show around the U.S. forced us to examine the needs of the audiences the show would play to. The pre-show movie video collage is one example of an addition we felt was necessary, never taking it for granted that the audience is familiar with Bollywood movies. You just have to come with an open mind to be entertained and have fun."

A Broadway veteran "practically born into musical theater" who originated the role of Connie in "A Chorus Line," Lee has made that seminal production a cornerstone of her career, directing over 35 companies in the production, as well as founding a Web site and writing a book ("On the Line: The Creation of 'A Chorus Line' ") devoted to the show. She's directing the upcoming Broadway revival, for which she will precisely reproduce Michael Bennett's original choreography. "Bombay Dreams" represented a refreshing change of pace.

"I am not a Bollywood expert," writes Lee. "However, I did have to do lots of research and was honored to have Lisa Stevens as choreographer, [who was] the assistant choreographer on the London and New York productions. She generously gave us so much history on the show and Bollywood."

A big finish

For Lee, the biggest challenge in staging "Bombay Dreams" was keeping audiences emotionally and visually involved for 2 hours.

"We decided we had to tighten the book, add songs from the London production, and develop the character of the reporter, Kitty," writes Lee, referring to a character who serves as a kind of envoy to Western audiences. "However, the biggest challenge was to make this the life and journey of Akaash."

"Bombay Dreams" features the hit songs "Shakalaka Baby" and "Chaiyya Chaiyya" (the latter reworked from the 1998 Bollywood hit "Dil Se," and recently heard on the soundtrack of Spike Lee's "Inside Man"). Lee promises a grand performance as the tour draws to a close.

"The company will definitely be going out with a bang," writes Lee. "They'll give Seattle all they've got. Soon, they will be saying goodbye to the characters they have developed and owned, as well as the friendships they have made over the past year. I'm sorry I won't be there to say good bye."

Muslims sacrified, Hindutva supported British

S.O. News service, Bhatkal, 13 Sep.:

"Muslims lives were sacrificed for the Independence of India. Not only ordinary Muslim lives but many learned scholars lost their lives. The question of loyalty for Muslims is asked to be proved by other organizations. Muslims need not prove their loyalty. There are organizations that supported the British and had not even participated in the war of independence. These organizations are still not happy with the independence of India and are conducting condolence procession on 14th August every year by taking a lamp in their hands, they are taking oath for Akhand Bharath vowing that there will include neighboring countries such as Pakistan and Bangladesh into Indian territory. These organizations never host the Indian flag in their offices and all these organizations are growing under Sangh family." says Dr. Haneef Shabab, Secretary Shams English Medium High School in Bhatkal. He was talking on the completion of 100 days of Vandemataram.

He presented the whole history of Vandemataram; he also read the poem which is written in Sanskrit language. Not even a well educated person can read Sanskrit so easily. A translation was also presented by him. While informing the audience and others he said that Bankam Chandrchat Upadhyaye born on 26 June 1836, the Britishers changed his name to Chatterji. He started a newspaper in 1858 by name Bhang Darshan. He wrote Vandemataram in 1862. This poem is also present in the novel of Annand Muth on 1881-82. Robindernath Tagore also liked this poem. A translation was also presented by him where India is being called mother and is worshipped. This poem came to effect on 5 Aug 1905 against the division of Bengal movement. Same year it tried to be national song in Varanasi Congress convention. Naresh Gupta translated the whole novel into Hindi on 1906. Islam Darshan a Bengal newspaper first opposed this song on 1920. In 1923 Congress Kakinada convention, this issue was raised between Moulana Muhammed Ali Jawhar, Pandit Vishnu Digambar Poliskar and other leaders creating a ruckus. Muslim league had opposed and condemned congress for accepting this song as national song on 1933. A committee which consists of Jawaharlal Nehru, Muhammed Ali Jauhar, Moulana Abulkalam Azad and Subhash Chandrabose was formed to see the opposition of Muslims for this song. The committee submitted report that only 2 lines and the rest cannot be read. National students association had totally opposed as this song hurts the communal feelings.

Dr. Haneef Shabab named many organizations who oppose this song. Muslim league had run a movement to stop this song to move further in 1938. He also added that the first Hindi song of vandemataram was sung in Hindi film in 1945. In 1950 where Dr. Rajandra Prasad made the law of secular India then he announced that Jana Gana Mana is the national anthem and that Vandemataram also has equal status and hence shall be regarded as national song. In 1951 Mannade have given it lyrics. In 1964 this song was sung on Dilip Kumar in the film leader. This song was the integral part of this film. In 1998, UP BJP government had ordered the singing of Saraswati Vandana with vandemataram in all the schools and it was made compulsory but Moulana Ali Miyan Nadvi opposed this and then the BJP Kalyan Singh government refuted this order. After that during the Independence Day celebration of golden jubilee, A R Rahman sang this song in a new style with which it became more popular.

Dr. Shabab also read out some main parts of novel translated in which not only vandemataram song but the whole novel was against the Muslims. He further said that in this novel, they "malich" for Muslims which means very backward or Dalit.

Dr. Shabab said that RSS or Jansanghi never participated in Indian independence; only Khilafat movement was active, under whose help India got independence. Dr. further added at that point of time the RSS had supported the British. He added that from the Independence Day, till date they do not celebrate Independence Day. He questioned the RSS as to who are they to tell the Muslims to go to Pakistan or elsewhere. The Muslims had a part in the war of independence and if wished would have gone to Pakistan but they chose to stay in Secular India. If India was not a secular country at the time of division then maybe the Muslims would have gone to Pakistan, but then India was declared a secular country and constitution grants the freedom to practice all religion here. Muslims in India are here by their choice and not by chance, this should be remembered by the RSS.

Dr. added that Muslims will come forward to sacrifice their lives if India ever needs their lives. He added that Muslims will protect this country and will never retract their steps when India is in trouble or any kind of war. The way Muslims had sacrificed their lives similarly if need arises now also Muslims will sacrifice their lives.

When times calls they will even sacrifice their lives for the motherland of India but if anyone say to worship India as God and sing vandemataram then this will not be possible at all. He also stated that Muslims are not Hypocrite who are dual faced unlike others. Muslims do not worship any idols accept Allah. Those people are not muslims who keep non Muslim wives and worship idols at home. Now media people are presenting these Muslims who have Hindu wives and keeping idols at home as Muslim representative. These people mostly film actors have no religion at all. He added that only keeping Muslim names are not enough for Muslim, they should obey Islamic rules and Quranic direction. He said those people who are keeping Hindu wives and worshiping idols or dargah or any other thing other than Allah then those are not Muslims at all.

He requested that no Muslims should be forced to change their mode of worship or add anything new in religion.

Programme commenced at 11:00 am with recitation of Quran by School teacher Abdul Azeezur Rahman Nadvi. Janab Ashraf Barmawar gave welcome speech and conducted vote of thanks at the end.

It should be noted that Dr. Haneef Shabab is the General Secretary of Majlise Islah wo Tanzeem Bhatkal, he is also a journalist and have good skills of writing articles in Urdu newspapers.

Now, A R Rahman heads for Hollywood

Source: PTI [ WEDNESDAY, MAY 01, 2002 10:18:29 AM ]

LONDON: Bollywood music director A R Rahman is all set to go global with a couple of Hollywood offers coming his way.

Rahman, whose first musical Bombay Dreams opens at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London on June 19, told reporters here late Wednesday night that he has received a couple of Hollywood offers from Sony music.

The 35-year-old Rahman who has composed hit soundtracks for over 50 films including Oscar-nominated-Lagaan, Fiza, Taal, Earth, Dil Se, Fire and Bombay, however, declined to give details of his Hollywood ventures.

"I wanted Rahman's work to reach a new audience. It was his music which inspired the whole project," said Andrew Lloyd Webber, producer of Bombay Dreams.

The musical is based on an original idea by Shekhar Kapoor and Webber and the Bollywood dance sequences in it are directed by noted choreographer Farah Khan.

Terming his project as a "wonderful story" which would "break new grounds", Webber, the producer of many outstanding musicals like The Phantom of Opera, says "it is a story of Akaash and Priya: two lovers from different worlds, sharing one dream".
