The countdown begins

With daughter Avni's wedding just a day away, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel is feeling the jitters all doting dads do. "This wedding is the most emotional moment of my life. This is the first marriage in the family as Avni is the eldest of my four children," he says.

The three-day wedding promises to be the social do of the season with the crme de la crme of the political, glamour and business world expected to attend. The revelry began with the griha shanti pooja at Patel's Nepeansea Road residence early morning yesterday. This was followed by a Mehendi ceremony at the Ball room, Taj Mahal Palace and Towers. Today is the sangeet ceremony which will be held at the Grand Hyatt.

The sangeet ceremony will feature performances by Sukhbir, Himesh Reshammiya and DJ Aqueel. The highlight of the evening is expected to be a video presentation by the family on Avni — right from her childhood. The wedding ceremony is scheduled to place at 11.30 am tomorrow and the theme will be crystal peacocks. The guest list includes Sharad Pawar, LK Advani, industrialists LN Mittal, Vijay Mallya, the Ambanis, the Godrejs, the Singhanias, and Bollywood biggies Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan.

But, understandably, all Praful can think about is the impending vidai. "All fathers have to go through what I am going through — it's a universal fact. If I had my way, I would keep Avni with me forever. Her marriage is special to the entire family and I take it as my responsibility to keep her happy always," he says.

Meanwhile, family friend and media coordinator Narendra Varma revealed that at least five receptions have been planned across the country.

The first will be held tomorrow at the Turf Club, followed by one in Bangalore on November 5 and another in Gondhia (Praful Patel's constituency) on November 8. There will be another reception in Haliyal, Karnataka, from where groom Prashant's father RV Deshpande has been an MLA for the last six years.

On December 5, yet another reception will be held in Delhi which is expected to be attended, among others, by PM Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi.
