Das Music, Rs 75 (CD)
A welcome surprise in these arid days. Music director Sujeet Shetty draws from reserves of our raags and folk and delivers songs that are backed by some really meaningful and fluid lyrics by Shaheen Iqbal. As the merits of meaty songs like 'Pal pal...' (Sonu Nigam) and all the others gradually seep into you, you sadly realize that these songs deserved bigger recording budgets and a bigger film! Here is one contemporary song that thrives on the basic triads of good music - writing, compositions and the seasoned vocals of Hariharan, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Abhijeet, Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal.
Strings - Bound By Faith
Saregama, Rs 145
A fascinating album with music by Zubeen Garg, though the final mantra 'Om' has some verse that is ridiculous to the point of being objectionable. The standout track is the stunning 'Ramo Ramo...' by Garg himself. 'Kaise kahoon...' (Zubeen-Shashwati Phukan) and 'Ishq...' (Zubeen) are other tracks that leave a mark. Good fare.
Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota - What If...
Times Music, Rs 150
Five tracks are bonuses from other films and albums, and of the rest, one is a repeat song, and one is an instrumental track. Viju Shah thus actually gets to compose only two songs, the very modern title-song by Kunal Ganjawala and Sunidhi Chauhan and the folksy 'Ek baar jaana America...' in which the novelty element is Paresh Rawal's voice in one of the two versions. Average fare. Dharti Ka Veer Yodha Prithviraj Chauhan
Times Music, Rs 195
Ravindra Jain needs to be praised for his acoustic sound and poetic lyrics but the maestro is not in peak form. Sadhana Sargam's 'Raj dulare so jaa...' makes a mark. 'Mitti...' (Suresh Wadkar) is melodious but sounds familiar. Dull fare. Jaana - Let's Fall In Love
Saregama, Rs 145
Anand-Milind's 'Jaana...' (Shaan) stands out despite the vacuous lyrics. The rest of the songs are absolutely of the unremarkable kind, with trite rhymes, familiar tunes and sounds and unambitious singing.
