As per Hindu Customs,we've this ritual of Kanyadaan where parents give away their daughter to the groom.

There was a ad of Manyavar which featured Alia Bhat where she was sitting as a bride and asked the question, "Am I, a woman,a commodity to be given away in charity?"

Why must a woman be commodified through the custom of kanyadaan?

This particular thing created a fierce polemic where people from different strata of Society came forward and jilted this particular ritual.

Do you think is it imperative for us to abide by this ritual in present times where we are talking of equality, rights of girls to education, rights to have share in property, everything!

Does the kanyadaan serve any purpose in today's society?

Or kanyadaan has been misinterpreted?

As Manasi mentioned,the tradition of giving away daughter’s hand in marriage is a cutom that is followed across the globe. The degree of following it literally might differ.

India is a highly populous country; hence you will find people/families who fit into a wide range of spectrum. In deep rural pockets of the country, you will find families who still consider a girl child as "Paraayadhan". While OTOH, you can also find families who treat their daughters as normal capable individuals.

Kanyadhaan, like many other customs was implemented many years ago when "marriage" was considered as a bargain, which heavily revolved around spousal roles in marriage. Now the broader culture has changed when it comes to gender roles in a marriage.

Since the definition of marriage itself has changed, the custom(s) leading to it also requires a major rehaul. However, remember that customs/traditions are in place to fit a wide range, sort of stitching a large dress that anyone(fat/skinny) can fit in. It is up to us to tailor it to suit our needs.

Is it imperative? No,it is not imperative. Think about why we follow customs & traditions in general, even when we don’t believe in it or makes no sense? It is usually to please our elders or loved ones.

Anu pasand hai but can be terribly servile which gets on my nerves. Self respect and dignity are non-negotiable traits for me...so that creates a problem when it come to Anu
