"What are you doing?"

Her eyes narrow as she regards him and he can clearly see the suspicion in her eyes. It only serves to increase his confusion.

"What do you mean?"

Purvi sighs and looks up at the ceiling. In exasperation perhaps. When she returns her gaze to him, her eyes are narrowed into slits. "Why are you following me around?"

What can he say to her in reply?

Because I have this constant need to be near you, to touch you, to hear you, to breathe the same air as you.

Because I'm afraid that something will happen to you and I won't be there to protect you.

But he can hardly say that to her. So Virendra just raises his eyebrows and hopes she'll read his expression as surprise.

"Am I? Following you?"

She looks to the side briefly, her teeth grazing her lower lip and he tries very hard to think about anything other than his desire to lean forward and sink his teeth in her lip.

"Mukhi ji, how will I ever get anything done if you keep following me?"

"Why do you need to do anything? Let the workers earn their salary."

She rolls her eyes and tries to turn away but Virendra's hand wraps around her upper arm out of it's own violation. He uses her own momentum to pull her closer, so she is standing in the bracket of his arms.

He lets out a shaky breath before tilting his chin to look down at her devastating eyes.

"Let me go. I have to see if Vaibhav is ready."

He should listen to her. He should let her go. They're standing in an open corridor where anyone can come upon them. He's standing too close to her. Already, he's a heartbeat away from behaving like a total fool. But the idea of her being with Vaibhav is anathema.

He takes a step closer to her and Purvi finds herself pressed to a wall. "You'll not go anywhere."

"Mukhi Ji.." Her breath hits his face and corrodes at his self-restraint. "What has gotten into you? Why are you..."

"Because he's a right prick and I don't want you near him."

Purvi's eyes widens at his exclamation. "Mukhi Ji, I can take care of myself."

He leans forward so his forehead rests against hers. "I know. But the last time you had to take care of yourself, I had thought I would lose you forever."

His admission leaves a pulsing silence in it's wake. They stay like this as seconds tick by, not wanting to move or breathe.

"Purvi," his mother calls, breaking their cocoon.

Purvi slips out of his hold in the next instant, leaving him to lean against the wall as he wills the world to stop spinning around him.
