Part 9 - Hulchul

“I’ll always remember you”, it was the reflection of his own desire in her eyes that pushed him over the curb as he leaned towards her, his lips glad to seek hers as their eyes flickered close.

Drawing closer, they breathed in the other’s scent and basked in their better halves warmth.

He almost had her. She almost had him.

But almost only.

Unsuspecting as their lips prepared to brush, the door in front of them was flung open and in stepped Sanyukta.

“Purvi vo aunty tumhe nashte…”

(“Purvi, aunty is calling you…”)

With a start, Purvi and Virender pulled away from each other, their faces flushed, their ears hot and their body at unease.

“ke liye—

(“For breakf—)

Sanyukta stopped, having seen the two jump away from each other. As soon as her eyes conveyed to her brain what they had seen, her mouth shut and she gaped at the duo.

Purvi wanted the ground to provide her sanctuary this instant.She kept her gaze trained on the ground, her heart rocking in her chest. She closed her eyes to calm it down and all she felt was a warm breath inching closer and closer. Her eyes flew open, and she clutched her chest, more bothered than before.

Virender looked around the room as if taking measurements of everything. Internally he groaned, a frustration beginning to creep up. What was it with youngsters these days?! At least a perfunctory knock to give them a heads up should’ve been there!

‘Yeah. How about you start with locking the door before locking down on Purvi?’ His conscience rolled his eyes at him, and Virender flinched at his internal rebuttal,pressing his fingers against his eyes. Yeah,that was an option too! Though going down the lane of Purvi’s thoughts did not make his situation easier, her eyes full of desire setting him ablaze even at the mere recollection. His eyes flew open as a shiver raced down his spine at the thought of what could have happened? What more could’ve happened?

He turned to see her in that instant, and she looked at him too. And there it was…the ever consuming heat. Their gazes locked, and for that split second they decided to let Sanyukta slip away from their thoughts.

While the girl in question stood frozen to her spot, firstshe gaped and then closed and opened her mouth like a fish, at a loss for words. She was trying to come to terms with what she had seen when her gaze unintentionally took a peek and found Purvi and Mukhi giving looks to each other. What those looks entailed, she’d better not bother to decipher!

Perhaps, she could slip away nice and quiet while they were eyeballing each other, and all of them could pretend that she didn’t walk in on them like a mannerless brat!

She had almost spun around on her heel, when the phone in her pocket came alive and nothing could’ve been worse, than that caller tune.

‘Ang laga de re, Mohe rang laga de re’

“Shit!” Sanyukta cursed and tilting to one side, tried to fish out her phone.

‘Main toh teri joganiya, tu jog laga de re’

First she pulled out a handkerchief, then a lip stick, then few loose changes. Where is the phone?!!She internally screamed.

‘Jog laga de re, prem ka jog laga de re’

At last, her fingertips felt the cool metal, and quickly she pulled her phone out and cut the call without even peeking a look at the caller. The call could’ve been important BUT her situation was outright dire!

Finally she heaved a sigh of relief and looked up to find the two looking at her. Purvi looked pretty sympathetic and Vir bhaiya’s face didn’t quite try to hide his distaste. Sanyukta sweat dropped.

Purvi and Virender would have continued the game of glazing(blazing gaze) at each other, had it not been for the cringey song coming to life. Their eyes widened in shock as the lyrics played out and they turned their heads to look at Sanyukta, who was hastily looking for her phone in her pocket. And once done, she finally met their gaze bringing them to the current situation.

‘Great!’ She sobbed mentally and wracked her brains for possible lines to speak out.

a. I’m blind (Not plausible, they knew she was not!)

b. Ididn’t see anything. Please carry on (Right, after you did aisi ki taisi of their mood!)

c. The truth.

Sanyukta cleared her throat, finally setting her sights on option c.

She smiled awkwardly and scratched her head. “Ah…wo…aapko kiss ke liye..

(“Ah….that….you were called for kiss…)

Suddenly she blinked, going over what she had said-‘aapko KISSSSSS’.

.

‘AHHHHH!!’ Kill me now!!

She cleared her throat again, “khaane ke liye…aunty…kissko bula…

(“For breakfast, aunty..is calling kiss…)

She blinked yet again. Kiss!!

Purvi and Virender by now were shades redder than the red.The mention of the ‘kiss’ that had almost happened not less than 5 minutes back, was enough to bring to life every thread of current that had coursed their veins.

Sanyukta finally put her foot down and shouted at the top of her lungs, “Auntyiscallingyouforbreakfast!!” And with that she rushed out of the room, leaving the two confused, both trying to decode her babbling.

And now that they were alone again, air felt extra thick andVirender loosened the button of his kurta and pressed his phone to his ears.“Haan munshiji..main ib aa hi raha hu”, and with that he walked out of the room while Purvi could only shake her head at his act.

(“Yes Munshiji….I’ll be right over”, and with that he walked out of the room while Purvi could only shake her head at his act.)

“Phone baja nhi par baat kar rahe thhe!” Chuckling at his poor excuse, she too walked out of the room.

(“The phone didn’t even ring and he was talking!)

As Sanyukta finished with acting out her recollection, she found Vaibhav rolling on the bed, immersed in throes of laughter.

“Oye! Don’t laugh. The instant my phone started ringing, I wanted but nothing to bolt out of there and hole myself up in my blanket and hibernate for the entire winter. It was so embarrassing!!”

Vaibhav peered at her from his tear stained eyes, his shoulders still shaking. “Finally you know what embarrassment is! You’ve been making me go through this every damn day. And let’s not forget about bhai’s killing intent that comes off in waves every time I’m with Purvi”.

“Yeah, yeah!” She shrugged him off, plopping on the bed, “My timing was awful though!”

Vaibhav finally sat up, his laughter down to chuckles now.“I second that! I risk my neck every day for this and now when there was improvement, you poke your nose!”

“As if I walked in on them about to kiss, intentionally!”Sanyukta scoffed twisting her lips.

“But anyway, there is improvement. Something was about to happen so it seems my plan worked!” She piped up as Vaibhav shrugged in response.

“Vese….” She trailed giving him a smug look as he raised his brows questioningly. “What?”

“Your idea of making Purvi select your dress was pretty awesome. My personal favourite was when you asked, “What about you?’” Sanyukta chuckled at the end as she recalled hiding behind the curtains when Vaibhav walked into the room with Purvi in tow.

Vaibhav rolled his eyes at her remark, “That was so weird,you know? I’m sure Purvi must’ve been creeped out. Like, I was creeped out too!”

“You were creeped out?” Sanyukta cackled as she looked at him, “Then what about Vir bhaiya who was creeping about your room’s window? Theway his fingers were clenching and unclenching, I am surprised, not a hair onyour head is harmed yet!”

“Reminds me, I’m on a hara-kiri mode these days!” Vaibhav grunted.

“Don’t whine so much!” Sanyukta slapped his shoulders and continued, “You should remember that I was right behind that curtain near the window. If his eyes would’ve moved even the slightest in my direction, I was toast too!”

“Yeah, well, you’ve always been a nut!” Vaibhav dismissed her as she pouted and then got off the bed.

“Hey, that reminds me why was vir bhaiya wearing that kurta?” Sanyukta asked, recalling that kurta in question was the same one as last night.

“That…” Vaibhav trailed uncomfortably, reminiscing what had transpired early morning.

Flashback

“Bhai, aap yaha?”Vaibhav asked as he ceased with his push ups and faced his brother.

(“Bhai, why are you here?”)

“Manne wo…manne wo kurta chahiye tha” Virender murmured as Vaibhav gave him a quizzical look and asked, “Konsa bhai?”

(“That…I wanted that Kurta”, Virender murmured as Vaibhav gave him a quizzical look and asked,“Which one bhai?”)

“Jo baawri mere te laayi thi”.

(“The one that baawri brought me”)

Now this was an unexpected development, bhai would never ask back for a thing he had given awayand here he was. Usually, Vaibhav would’ve handed it over without a second thought but he resisted, strangely.

“But bhai, I’ll be wearing this to the function”

“Koi aur daal lena”

(“Just wear another then”)

“Bhai…you gave it tome. It’s mine now”

“Its not!” Virender cut him off sharply and took a menacing step closer, “Purvi wo kurta mere te laai thi, tere te nhi! Galti se wo tujhe de diya maine par wo hai mera. Muhje ib mhari cheej mhare pass chahie. Kurta nikaal!”

(“It’s not!” Virender cut him off sharply and took a menacing step closer, “Purvi brought that kurta for me, and not for you! Giving it to you was a misunderstanding on my part,but it is mine. And now I want my thing back with me. Give me the kurta!”)

“But bhai….”

“Vaibhav, bola na maine Kurta wapis kar”, Virender demanded.

(“Vaibhav! Handover the kurta now!”)

As Vaibhav caved under the overwhelming pressure, he handed over the kurta to Virendra. Taking it, he turned to leave when he stopped halfway and walked back to Vaibhav.

“Ik cheez aur, bhai tu hai. Tere te pyaar karu hu aur tere sath sab kuch baant saku hu. Par mujhse umeed na karna ki main baawri bhi baatoonga. Meri biwi hai vo. Teri sirf bhabhi hai, dost hai. Varna,wo sirf meri hai”.

(“One more thing- you are my brother, I love you and I can share everything with you. But don’t for a second expect that I will be sharing Baawri with you. She is my wife. For you,she is a sister-in-law and a friend only. Otherwise, she is mine”)

Vaibhav came to the present as Sanyukta tapped his shoulder,waiting for his story, “Bhai asked for it, and I gave it back. Originally, it was his so…” Vaibhav trailed as Sanyukta nodded.

“Well whatever, the gist of the matter is, my plan’s a success. And by the time I’m through, your brother will be on his knees!” She grinned, her eyes glinting.

“Why will bhai be on his knees?” Vaibhav asked confused, and then his head lit up, “Oh, you mean a proposal of love?”

Sanyukta gave him a side look and winked, “That,and a lot more!”
