This scene has some significance with respect to a certain MN interaction before it...( for better understanding, watch MN scene #12 from the same link )...
N: Main bhi kar sakti hoon, research.
M: Mazaak mat karo.
N: Mazzak to main tumhara banaoungi aur main aisa research karoongi, jo aaj tak kisi ne nahi kiya hoga. Tum mujhe jaante nahi ho.
M: Jaanna bhi nahi chahti.
Revert back to the scene you've mentioned...Nupur stood by all the lines she had uttered in front of Mayank in the scene I've pointed out - She did do an 'interesting research' as Deodhar puts it and makes M look like an idiot when he's fumbling while responding to Prof.D's question.
Mayank on the other hand had to eat his words - He questioned her very ability to do research, which she proved wrong. Second, in-spite of him saying that he has no interest, whatsoever, in getting to know her, he is pretty intrigued as to how she managed to submit a good report.
The best thing about MN, in their heydays, is that we could never guess who leads the game, who has the upper-hand. The fact that they played off each other so well, making it look like a battle of equals, made them a couple to watch out for.
